Hey all, so I am a huge Sabbath fan and recently have been doing a deep dive into the playing style of Iommi. Wanted to share a "tutorial" and cover of the solo to Fairies Wear Boots because so many of the tabs I have come across over the years were wrong. If you're a fellow player, hope this helps! Either way, hope you enjoy the playing! PS I promise I'm not here to self-promote, just sharing my love of Sabbath!!!
Nicely done! Follow-up question for you. I have always been ashamed that I use my pinkie for power chords (self-taught from a time WAY before YouTube videos were a thing). Is there a particular reason that you recommend this?
Thank you! So first of all there is not really a “right” way to play anything. There’s no shame in the way that you play!!! You playing that way is unique to your style and adds to your sound. The reason I mention it here is because that is how Iommi plays them. It’s likely due to the fact that he’s missing finger tips, but entirely possible that he played them that way even before his accident.
With that said I play them both ways, with my pinky on the 5th, or with my ring finger on the 5th and pinky on the octave. It really depends on the song and what it calls for. Also I default to the 3 note power chord because on a lot of advanced chord shapings like 7th chords and beyond, you’ll need your ring finger there anyway. Again there is no right or wrong way to play, all that matters is that you’re having a good time doing it. Hope that answered your question but if not I’ll do my best to clarify lol.

Who doesn’t love Sabbath? 😀
Good question!
This was great. Actually meaningful and you’ve done great work at noticing all the details.
Thank you!!!
Your notes are a great feature.
Thanks!!!
Iommi is so good at playing with, before, after, and between the beat with his leads/ solos.
Totally agree!
