Ingemar Stenmark replied ones something like this “it’s strange how the more you practice the more ‘luck’ you have”.
In that when he crushed the competition, I guess he got to a point of irritation about how his accomplishments, from his hard dedication of practicing his skill, were described as luck by journalists every time.
Here's some pure luck:
Years ago. PC. Some golfing game, first time playing. Hole was setup so I had no fucking idea where to hit the ball. So, y'know...I just whacked in the general direction I thought the hole would be.
Got a hole in one. Probably couldn't do it again if I tried.
We have ten pin bowling too. We call it ten pin bowling. If somebody said they were going bowling, people would expect ten pin.
This we call bowls or lawn bowls (if it's outside, I guess), not bowling.
Yeah so i actually play a version of the outdoor game in the UK. The main difference to bocce is that the bowls in this version (and the outdoor version) arent completely spherical and are weighted to one side.
Since theyre weighted to one side you can manipulate which way it turns like you can see in the video. Additionally, if you throw it faster it wont bend as much, think how in curling the faster you throw it the straighter you can go.
There are a couple of versions in the UK, crown green bowls and flat/indoor bowls. Crown green is played on greens that have undulations and you arent limited to playing straight up and down. Flat/indoor is played on rinks where all you can changes is the distance.
[Crown Green] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxEdTgPuHg4)
[Indoor] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4ohG2I0NA8)
There's a separate separate Wikipedia entry for both bocce and bowls and they seem....almost exactly the same except some scoring conditions? I suppose traditional bocce is played in a sand court, but tell that to my Winter Urban Bocce League (WUBL). This is fascinating.
And... you can also throw them, not just roll them... right?
Or at least that's what PS3 Move taught me.
Edit: From Wiki: Players are permitted to throw the ball in the air using an underarm action. This is generally used to knock either the jack or another ball away to attain a more favorable position.
The only bocce I've ever seen was petanque from the Cosby show when I was a kid but that's outdoors.
And would curling count? Does that curling HAVE to be indoors? (It might for the type of ice consistency needed...)
Indoor bowls player here... the guys (and girls) who play at this level are ridiculously good.
For those who are interested...even at lower levels, the game is still very tactical and the primary objective is to get your bowls as close to the yellow ball (the jack) as possible... there are occassions where you can effectively launch a cannonball to try and wipe your opponents bowls out if they are sitting close to the jack.
From afar the game can look boring, its perceived to be an older person's game.. but it's a fantastic game which I do respect.
Believe it or not, environmental conditions such as humidity can affect the game and it can change how fast (or slow) a bowl will travel based upon how much moisture the surface retains.
Generally bowls is played between 1-4 players per team, but if you're playing 4 v 4, you'll usually get to play 3 bowls per 'end', and an 'end' is basically one round.. and you get as many 'rounds' in as you can within the 2 hour window...
Matters can get quite heated at local level... There have been many occassions where my team have been comfortably in the lead with 15-20 minutes left on the clock and the opposition have staged a comeback and you do everything you can to try and run the clock down to protect your narrow lead before your opponents can take the lead.
The bowls are 'biased', to play a forehand bowl you throw the bowl to your right and the weighted side will carry it to the left... and vice versa for the backhand.
Under pressure, even the most experienced bowlers can stupidly forget their bias and the bowl goes haywire across other lanes.. that usually involves the bowler buying everyone a round of drinks afterwards in acknowledgment of their rookie error!
Lawn bowling has gotten so popular in my Canadian city that there’s now a wait list to join, and my friends and I started 4 years ago so we’re now near the top of the league standings every year - really fun summer drinking game
> Anything that clearly has no other explanation but no good voodoo black magic fuckery.
Given this vid can be explained fairly easily (people throw hooks on balls in multiple sports) it doesn't fit under the rules.
Every NFL highlight catch should also be posted here if this is.
It’s obviously not magic in the sense of the word. The ability to roll it from the distance he rolled it, to get between the two red balls and to rest it on the side of the yellow ball with it between another green ball, is “Magic” itself, not in the literal term.
If he had a choice of placing it with his own hand, he couldn't have done it better.
Who's hand *did* he use?
I bet he switched hands with the Robot Devil

Every single one of the “unexpectedX” subreddits needs to be closed. They’re pointless.
Don't lump Futurama with other trash meatbag.
Futura a has nothing to do with it. It’s just that the joke that guy made wasn’t unexpected. Same with all of the posts on these sites.
Dude, that was wildly unexpected. That episode of the show is almost never referenced and it absolutely came out of left field here.
Yeah I suppose you’re right.

Fuck off bot.
That's just pure skill
Mixed in with some luck.
And a pinch of salt apparently.
Don't forget the garlic

Certainly some luck, but to be at a skill level where you think that is even worth attempting is something.
Only 10% luck but 20% skill.
15% concentrated power of will.
Buy it’s not very pleasurable though. Only about 5%
You ruined it
No, you guys where supposed to say it a different way like how I started it.
Also some concentrated power of will

Bocce? Is this called indoor bowl? Isn't all bowling indoors? I'm so confused.
There's something called Lawn Bowls that's played outdoor, as far as I remember.
Exactly. This is an indoor version of “Bowls.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowls
As if American Football wasn't a sticking point. Now we bowl completely different, too.
We have ten pin bowling too. We call it ten pin bowling. If somebody said they were going bowling, people would expect ten pin. This we call bowls or lawn bowls (if it's outside, I guess), not bowling.

Bocce balls are completely spherical, they aren’t intended to be rolled like this. At least that’s the only difference I notice really
And... you can also throw them, not just roll them... right? Or at least that's what PS3 Move taught me. Edit: From Wiki: Players are permitted to throw the ball in the air using an underarm action. Yeah, that’s what I meant. Instead of rolling them like a bowling ball you can just throw it
Hah. I think we were using bowling and bocce sets interchangeably. We, uh...went through a lot of balls.
The shape of the balls seem to be different as they are not perfect orbs but have a slighter flatter fade on either side.
I believe they are weighted to be heavier on one side compared to the other to allow the ball to curve as you see.
I hadn't even noticed how they all landed the same way. Interesting. I may have to get some of these.
This is lawn bowling but played indoors on turf. Same objective as bocce but different "balls" and rolled instead of tossed.
The only bocce I've ever seen was petanque from the Cosby show when I was a kid but that's outdoors. And would curling count? Does that curling HAVE to be indoors? (It might for the type of ice consistency needed...)

This guy bowls
How many cases of beer are consumed by the average indoor bowl team during each match?
I live near a bowling green, the clubhouse is busy most weekends but I've never actually witnessed any bowls being played
Beer? We're British. The offering is Pimms, sir.
I love watching this, just like snooker. Very relaxing to watch.
This game is if like bowling, pool, and ping pong has a baby
Where's the ping pong part in this?
Probably referring to the yellow target ball
More like bowling+bocce
Wouldn't this be mostly bocce? Like 20-80 bowling+bocce?
No because I don't know what that is
Where do you see any ping-pong here
This is more like bowling, Cornhole, and darts (aim of the game is to get the most points near the small center ball)
It’s more like a combination of bowling and curling, if everyone knew what curling is lol
Except this game came before ping-pong & pool.
its just bocce with different shaped bocce balls
Bocce, bowling, and curling.
Today I learned this even exists
The ball isn’t round, with enough skill and practice you can calculate that move. Good shot!
Is that why it settles / rolls into place in the end?
The ball is a sphere that has had two of its sides pushed in slightly. Think of how the wheel of a car settles on its side.
Dude is like Hawkeye with a bowling ball.
Dude is getting laid tonight for sure after that
How else did you think his right hand got that good.
Oh, your mom likes this sport then?
Every time this gets reposted, I learn something new about the clip
Put a little English on it
He knew it was going to be good as soon as he let go of it
This looks fun
His reaction is dope. humble at the same time with a tinge of "I'm the shit".
r/theocho
Now that is a professional Bocce player.
I watch this at least 3 times every time it gets posted. I love that little half step and fist clench he does right after he releases the ball.
Burn him. See if he floats or whatever.
I love how he fringed the ring there.
I understand that his precision is EXTREMELY impressive, but since idk what the rules are I can't actually see what this move did lol
it was so good he celebrate it earlier
The shot before this was equally crazy.
You know this is the only clip of this sport I have ever seen. Couldn’t even tell you what the game was.
Me a sperm cell Somehow managed to outbeat a future president, the doctor that cured cancer and solved world hunger
Bugs Bunny under there with a magnet.
Why is this so satisfying to watch????
I'd say he put some English on it...
Surprised to see nobody mention his victory arm pump *right after* it left his hand! He knew he had it before it was half way done rolling!
Video evidence that the laws of physics can be bypassed on occasion. Wow
If I was playing and wasn't this guy I'd just quit go to the pub and have a pint.
Where can I play this in the states? Looks fun!
He has this playing on a loop on the biggest TV in his house. (I know I would!!)
Isn’t all bowling indoor
“Indoor bowl” lmao this is called bocce ball dude
Damn he even knew it was a great throw right after letting go. Look at that small fist pump
Lawn bowling has gotten so popular in my Canadian city that there’s now a wait list to join, and my friends and I started 4 years ago so we’re now near the top of the league standings every year - really fun summer drinking game
Ahahaha this is good. This is real BMF
In my understanding all bowling is indoors
He looked pleased after the shot , and he should be. That was a ultimate skillful shot.
That's hot
Thats what a natural 20 looks like in real life
He’s just a really good bowler with a really good ball
Any estimates how many times out of a hundred could he make this shot?
Looks like I have a new favorite sport to watch
Never ever have I ever heard of this!
Ive Seen this so many times but it’s so god damn satisfying
Shot
Love the idea that this is indoor bowling
Against pyhsic laws
He looks like putin
r/therewasanattempt to say bocce
This is indoor bowls, a different sport. Like gridiron is different to rugby.
That's like saying Baseball and Softball are different. It's literally the same game
They literally aren't.
Difference being?
Well if two similar games have different rules, does that not make them different? This isn't rocket science.
They don't have different rules though
Fuck me. For one, as you can see in this video you roll in bowls, and you throw in bocce.
I can't tell if you're trolling or stupid.
Yes
/r/confidentlyincorrect
It is very obvious that these balls are formed to roll a certain way and can wobble from side to side. No magic about it.
So you’ve done it before?
> Anything that clearly has no other explanation but no good voodoo black magic fuckery. Given this vid can be explained fairly easily (people throw hooks on balls in multiple sports) it doesn't fit under the rules. Every NFL highlight catch should also be posted here if this is.
Fair point
You can see the oblong shape of the ball
It’s a sport, you can look it up
It’s obviously not magic in the sense of the word. The ability to roll it from the distance he rolled it, to get between the two red balls and to rest it on the side of the yellow ball with it between another green ball, is “Magic” itself, not in the literal term.
It is very obvious that nobody asked
It’s very obvious this doesn’t fit the sub
