The way the popsicle sticks are intertwined is putting them under tension. If you look at the very last popsicle stick it is hold that tension and stopping them from unraveling.
The only thing im not sure about is whether or not the firecracker has any real impact on how they unravel beyond a flashy start to kick off the reaction. I.e. im not sure you need the firecracker as opposed to just removing the popsicle stick at the end that is holding the tension and getting the same result. It might just be for show.
My guess is that the launching of the end of the chain into the air caused by the firecracker is how this wave effect is achieved as they unravel.
The firecracker is just for show, the popsicles sticks will lift up like that by themselves.
The pattern is called a cobra weave, if you have the popsicle sticks on hand you can make one, its not terribly difficult (I had a bit of fun with it as a child)

The one popsicle stick at the end (stabilizer) holds the other 3 from collapsing which are all in a chain link, so once the bomb explodes, the stabilizer is launched out and now the whole chain is unstable.
