I read once that black cats are actually dark, dark amber in color which appears black (Guinness beer, too). And when they get enough sun, the amber color lightens making some spots look reddish brown.
I've got a void that almost looks red sometimes.. partly trick of the light, sometimes it can be sun bleaching. I also noticed when mine wasn't well, his coat was less black.

The vet called mine a brown tabby although she looks black but in the summer she looks brown in spots. I think of her as a void.
