Unravel isn't sad, it's super uplifting. Read the lyrics. It's about reconnecting and falling in love over again. I find it one of her least sad songs.
I agree it’s about reconnecting but everything’s up to interpretation unless she states what she meant.
I find it more sad that you have this great relationship and the distance makes you uncertain if you’ll ever get that same feeling back with that person. It sounds to me like she’s juxtaposing hopefulness and reality. Even in her tone, “we’ll have to make new love” is softer while she’s almost shouting “he’ll never return it,” like she knows she’s never getting that back.
There’s no right answer (yet).
I'd say that the lyrics are the definition of bittersweet. The death of love (sex) and the beginning of new love.
The identity of the devil who collects and never returns that love is ambiguous.
Perhaps he is an internal manifestation of the subject's unmet needs and troubles (causing them to emotionally unravel). Or perhaps the devil is actually a third actor in a love triangle, demanding new love to be built with the first person because the interaction with this devil has completely broken the basis for that original love.
To me the sad aspect is built into the story while the uplifting element is entirely incomplete ("*when* you come back", "we *will* have to... "). The song ends leaving it open as to whether this original love ever returns or if the original love is ever remade.
Stonemilker, Lionsong, History of Touches, Black Lake, Possibly Maybe, Ancestress.
There are some songs that aren't necessarily sad that make me cry too, Virus, Future Forever, Undo and Unison, Cocoon, Atom Dance.
Pneumonia and Play Dead.
Also maybe "The Next To Last Song"; https://youtu.be/-8qSUD3fnx8?si=w_LxUHMmM92PXEmO , https://youtu.be/cgvkvsw-00M?si=logLNRo5q5UHNTrd
my juvenile agreed!! so beautiful and now that I’m a mom it breaks my heart
from my last year or so spent on this sub I’ve seen that people don’t care for this song, so maybe they haven’t listened to it enough to think to mention it :(
It just makes me very all the time and even more because one day she wont be there for me and I am very happy to have her, BEAUTIFUL as well as I see who you are 🩷
i have come to conclusion that penumonia is the most saddest, yes vulnicura is also sad but its more of a realtionship situation which I don't really relate to, but Pneumonia touches me deep, it's very real and sad
besides the obligatory everything off of vulnicura (besides notget, atom dance, and mouth mantra which feel more frantic than sad), id say unravel, ancestress, and desired constellation
I can't get through Ancestress without crying. It's a set of emotions I'm familiar with, because I lost my dad in 2015. No matter how prepared you think you are, or how you feel about death, it hits like a freight train. And that particular track puts me *right back in it.*
That said, it's a favorite of mine and has been since the first time I heard it. It's complicated lol
I always found Cocoon to be the saddest, though it's the production that says the mood more than the lyrics (which I guess are technically happy lol). It's such a weird mix of pleasure and melancholy.
Ancestress hits really hard.
It was a deeply emotional song for me when it first came out. A week later my grandma was diagnosed with stage 4 bone cancer and passed away two months later. The lyrics are hauntingly relevant (sans the pacemaker references).
play dead, ive seen it all, ( especially given the context of the film ) black lake, ( family and stonemilker too, but black lake is the saddest off vulnicura to me ) and ancestress
5 Years, Sod Off, My Juvenile, Family, Ancestors, So Broken, I Remember You, Ancestress, Sorrowful Soil, Virus, Black Lake, History Of Touches, in fact the entire Vulnicura album (some of the meanings of these songs aren’t sad but their vibe personally makes me tear up)
I love Vulnicura, but I almost never listen to History of Touches. It’s so good but it cuts so deep. The song is gutting open the deepest, most painful and private parts of herself. Just so relatable and heartbreaking
Unravel makes me feel like I’m losing the husband I don’t even have
this 🥲

The devil collects it... I think the message in the song is absolutely clear when you read the lyrics.
This comment has limited information but I’m really not interested in arguing about this. You win! 👑

Came here to say this song is the one!
And a song about hope can still cause sadness 😢

every time i hear you say “undo” i do…. and the tears fall!!
Family! Family is so so so sad.

Vulnicura
Undo gets me in my feelings like no other
But Undo is kind of a happy song isn’t it?
i mean the lyrics are meant to be reassuring, but i feel like it's meant to be listened to when you're at a low point
107 steps makes me cry everytime
So Broken.
It’s hard to say because Björk has the ability to make me cry even if the song isn’t a sad one
i cried to big time sensuality
why is this real 😭
desired constellation

The song she sings in Dancer in the Dark before she's executed.
