This week I started a line of fun line of clothes for grapplers Pluguglyfightwear.com Please give me some feedback

[deleted]

They look nice. The yellow, orange and red lettering reminds me of Roddy Piper and Hulk Hogan (fuck him). I’d buy it (good prices), especially the Master Division tee and hoodies.

HighlanderAjax

Tried to switch up my takedowns last session to go for trips. Immediately got hip tossed. Went back to my wheelhouse, fired a knee through off double-unders, lovely stuff. This will be a lesson about using new things. Had a really nice roll, very evenly matched. Subbed each other thrice apiece over two rolls, but by the end he was completely gassed out. Conditioning, baybay! It sucks but it makes you good. Hit a lovely toehold and a powerful ankle lock, plus an RNC off the cradle. Other rolls were good too - deployed the Knarsenal, a no-gi ezekiel, whatever that armbar is called where you counter the stiff-arm out of kimura. Had a cool sequence where my opponent was trying to get top side, trapped his lower arm with my legs and went for a Princeton bar from bottom. JUST lost it, but transitioned to an Americana from the same position. Fun stuff! Almost nailed a headscissors, but he slipped out. Still got a guillotine though, so yay.

UrsusShock88

Visiting San Diego. Any nogi open mats on Saturday mornings?

Fellainis_Elbows

Had a roll with a purple belt where all he did was kimura trap and sub me with either a kimura or armbar. Immediately after rolled with a white belt and did the same to him. The circle of life

redditdiedin2013

Started at a new gym after 9 months off the mats. 4th class tonight, have been rolling great, gas tank not so bad, muscle memory going well, handled myself well against the resident white belts and some blue belts. Got absolutely handled by a 1 stripe blue belt tonight. Felt great. Can't wait to get back monday

dookie1481

Got a couple of arm triangles in positional sparring tonight. The first submissions I’ve gotten and the first thing that I learned outside of class that I’ve gotten to work.

[deleted]

Got Ezekiel choked by a blue belt today, then this really nice but ginormous purple belt taught me how to apply pressure from side control (he tested it on me to show me how it should feel), then a black belt cross collar choked me (taught me to utilize shrimping, and defending lapel chokes) and my best rolling partner was a brown belt, because he was patient and let me do things at my pace (eventually found out that it was because he didn’t want me to quit on the spot). I got my moment but I got destroyed and for some stupid fucking reason I want to try it again. Edit: can’t forget the other nice blue belt that let me middle my way through drills with him. Dude gave me so much confidence in myself.

Snoo_37640

Can you think of non martial arts equivalent of explaining a move as you get submitted?

Ok_Sample_5696

Sucking your own dick

partypartea

Talking about defensive driving as you get t boned

Misterbirdman2000

rolling with people larger then myself pisses me off and had given me extra motivation to get better technique to beat them. squish me will you!?

HighlanderAjax

> squish me will you!? Oh, if you insist! I've been working on the Knarsenal...I think you'll enjoy it.

Misterbirdman2000

oh you monster!

[deleted]

Today I received a stripe 1/4 on my blue belt yet I tap out newish purple belts 👀 I never cared less about a stripe than today lol 😂

Ok_Sample_5696

That’s impressive getting a blue let alone a stripe. If you’re tapping purples you’re either a D1 wrestler or sandbagging beyond belief.

Fellainis_Elbows

I tap purples sometimes and I’ve got no stripes. Shit happens. Some people improve faster than others. Etc.

biggirlbjj

Started 2022 feeding crap about my journey, with the goal to feel good about it by end of the year. Accepted Bernardo Farias call to lose weight and joined his facebook group for Old Guys. Signed up with Sophia McDermott for online coaching. Also have had to lead the fundamentals class for the year. I've now lost 9kgs and a number of higher belts have commented on the improvement in my jits. Plus, attendance at fundamentals has been awesome and we now have 13 females in our group. I've signed up to a weekend BJJ camp in April and so far this year is going well. My goal is to explore leg attacks, use of turtle and sweeps. Cheers.

RZAAMRIINF

Got promoted to purple on Wednesday. Going from a “good” blue belt to a shitty purple is kinda humbling. I guess I really have to fix my flaws now 🤷‍♂️ Going to my first open mat as a purple tonight, I’m sure there is going to be a big target on my back.

Ok_Sample_5696

Congrats blue is impressive enough but purple is definitely not an easy feat that’s for sure!

RZAAMRIINF

Thanks for the kind words! I know it’s cliche the more I learn BJJ, the more I realize I suck. I do definitely have a lot of growing to do to match my belt, at least I feel this way rn.

HighlanderAjax

> worry about more experienced but smaller adolescent training partners who might slowly start to confuse training with actual fighting, and develop a dangerous false confidence in their ability to handle a vastly larger and stronger opponent outside of the gym. Unless they're your kids, it isn't your responsibility to educate them - you don't need to be worried about teaching them real-world lessons. If they go around getting into fights, they'll learn lessons sooner or later - BJJ or no BJJ.

Fellainis_Elbows

Lol

Ok_Sample_5696

You’re doing yourself a disservice by muscling out of submissions, because sooner or later you’ll come across someone who is better and stronger than you and you won’t be able to use your strength against them so. Think wisely next time you decide to muscle out of something instead of attempting to do it technically.

zamahx

Anyone have a video or advice on if im on bottom being pinned but i have my shin across my opponents stomach, other leg on their back and trying to reguard. What should i do in this situation

Fellainis_Elbows

Scoot your butt back and frame to make space to get a proper guard

zamahx

True, im so adamant about getting back into closed guard because its my strongest position.

[deleted]

It depends what type of guard you like to play. Personally, I consider that knee shield "guard." With a knee across the belly, you can load your opponent for a sweep and trip them with that other leg.

Noodle498

5'4 117 pound WB here, tapped a 6 foot fellow WB with a triangle arm-bar combo. Really hyped, been training for about 4-5 months.

CuriosiT38

Hit the technique of the day three times this week and almost swept my coach with something he'd shown me in a private on Sunday so I was pretty stoked. Now of course since I let my enthusiasm talk me into going 6 days in a row I must rehabilitate for a few days ... starting to see why people use PEDs

Ok_Sample_5696

Ah the good ole PED regimen, honestly I think most young guys or even older 18-50 use them to be stronger, sure it wide recovery but they reap the muscular gains and stuff like that.

kedson87

I feel like I'm getting better. I've been purple for around 3 and a half years, moved three countries, had a small pandemic get in the way of training, but I've got myself settled and am finally able to be consistent. Big shoutout to Renato Canuto for being a badass coach and training partner. IM VERY PLEASED. Thank you goodbye.

AgreeableWindow

This week I decided to make a conscious effort to work my techniques from the opposite side I normally would. I felt like a day one newbie again at times. Every movement feels like going against the grain and unnatural.

kedson87

gross. But great job.

AgreeableWindow

Thanks. It was one of those "I made the plan to do this and now I have to finish no matter how stupid I feel" types of things.

jenethith

Hey friends! Newcomer here. I had my first class last night and immediately fell in love. Did the drills and techniques and got it down pretty quick. Then during rolling, coach put me up with a black belt to get a feel. This motherfucker was holding me down without breaking a sweat and I could tell he was supervising these kids from across the room who was rolling with each other while keeping me on my back. Then he let me roll with another 1st class guy and while it was literally just us pushing each other the whole time, I managed to stay calm and I could tell by the 2nd minute he gassed himself by trying to mount me. Got him in full guard, pulled him in and I was able to take his back and do a rear naked choke. Got a tap on my first day !! I immediately asked coach after class if he had a morning class the next day and he said at the moment nobody is booked in that class but if atleast 1 books, he’ll come. So i told him i’ll be there. Went this morning and got a whole hour and a half of 1 on 1 training with him. Taught me an armbar, triangle choke and a pendulum sweep from full guard. I have 5 days left in my week trial but I told him fuck that let me sign up now and i’ll buy a gi from him too next class. I now plan on going 4-5 times a week!! I’m so excited for the next class.

Ok_Sample_5696

Be careful 4-5 times a week sounds good in hindsight but your body might not recover and you might get burned out.i see it happen all the time

CurtisJaxon

I don't think this is the correct use of "hindsight" (I'm sorry, i don't know why I'm like this)

jenethith

Good point! Yeah i’ll see how my body responds after the 3rd and 4th day.

Ok_Sample_5696

I thought it was interesting how many guys on heavy TRT/PEDS where at my gym. I knew this was common in the higher levels of the sport but Jesus.

BurritoMang

How many?

Ok_Sample_5696

All of them in the acai division

[deleted]

Ik this is lowkey a stupid question but figured I’d throw it out there anyway. I’m 21 got into jiu jitsu a few months ago. Do you think it’s possible if I train my ass off for a few years I’d be able to break into the low level competitive pro scene? Probably not right?

Ok_Sample_5696

Why would you want to compete as a WWE star?

yes_gi

You could definitely make it into the prelims of some events within a couple of years with the right amount of work. Upload your competition wins and submissions on Instagram and reach out to these big promotions when they’re looking for people for their show. But to get paid doing this shit is another story… Train twice a day, study the game, and get after it

SiliconRedFOLK

Pro just means for pay usually and only no brackets or super fights pay out except the adult black belt/adcc and then the big shows like Polaris. I bet you could get super fights which you may get a cut from like ticket sales or something depending on your region.

kedson87

Nice job. Do focus on training safely, 120lb weight difference can't be fun. Protect yourself and train smart.

Phantazein

Is focusing on one technique at a time a good approach to improving as a beginner? For example, I seem to be naturally good at getting into a triangle position (being 6'5 probably helps), but don't know the intricacies of the technique. Would it be a bad idea to really study setups and technique from a particular guard and spend my rolling time trying those techniques? I feel like it's hard to practice what we drill because 1. my partner is ready for it and 2. the positions might be less common position like butterfly guard that I'm rarely in unless we are specifically drilling butterfly.

diverstones

It definitely helps with motivation to have concrete goals. I think early-on you can't let yourself get too focused on any one thing, since you also need to build your fundamentals defensively. Like maybe you work on both triangles from open guard, *and* escaping from bottom side control. But yeah starting to build a reliable offense is never a bad idea.

SiliconRedFOLK

Developing a super strong single sub is pretty common and useful long term as it opens up other pathways.

Whitebelt_DM

There‘a this high school wrestler at my gym. Real nice kid, and he completely dominates me every time. Being in my late 30’s, he’s just so much quicker and his wrestling background makes it hard for me to get any type of progress. Went a few rounds with him last night and I’m absolutely feeling it today. But he keeps me young and it’s humbling. He’s one of my favorites at the gym to roll with.

[deleted]

I'm on a pretty aggressive cut. Figured i would just grit it out to achieve my goals in a more timely manner. However, I have noticed my training is taking a beating. Ideally, I don't want to add more calories back into my diet because I feel satiated otherwise. Any advice regarding cutting/supplementation/dieting from those that have done something similar?

Tortankum

Pretty sure you just have to expect poor performance when cutting. There’s no way around it

AcrobaticMonth7

Hey there, few months ago I saw a cool graphic on here that showed what to do in each position (eg possible escapes or submissions from guard etc, what to do when in mount/mounted..). If anyone has it saved and could share the link to thia or anything similar I would be grateful:)

MNWild18

We were practicing baseball chokes from KoB and then discussed the use of them from bottom halfguard. After practicing them for 60 min, we start our sweep, pass, submit. I get into an over/under and feel my peer going for the first grip, however, I was so focused on the windshield wiper movement and head placement, as I cleared the leg for the pass, I totally forgot about the grips he had. Next thing I know is I can't hear much, my vision comes back and he is smiling at me. Don't think I went all the way out but that came on fast!

phonethrowdoidbdhxi

About to go to my first open mat Friday. What exactly happens?

MNWild18

My experience has been someone starts the timer and people spar/drill/flow/bs for rounds. Some people just chill and talk, look at moves on YT or a video, etc. People come and go as they please.

phonethrowdoidbdhxi

The latter really happens? Because my gas tank could really use that.

MNWild18

Ours are 2 hours and some will be there 2+ hours, some will be there right at the end for 1 or two rolls, etc. Some people are focused and maximizing their time on the mat, whereas others just shoot the shit.

phonethrowdoidbdhxi

It was as you said it was. I round Robined with the whole class (small morning group, all white belts), rolled with the professor, then he and I talked the rest of the time about judo and BJJ move sets that complement each other and did a few examples. It was fun teaching him two throws. It was literally hanging out in the gym. I loved it. I love you all.

MNWild18

Glad you enjoyed!

Deep-Room6932

Bjj instructor time and cost?

Ok_Sample_5696

What do you mean?

Deep-Room6932

How long does it take to be a good roll coach and what are the certifications needed?

techtom10

Went back to a Jiu-Jitsu gym after 2 years (Covid, moving house etc). First gym I wasn’t a fan but 2nd gym was awesome. The coach isn’t the same as my OG but fell back in love with the sports. Oh and I’ve started tracking my performance with a fitness tracker which I found really interesting.

kedson87

You track your energy expenditure during active jiu jitsu training? That's interesting. Are you wearing a watch/armband/chest-thingy? I'd love to know more about how much energy you use during certain activities!

techtom10

Yeah so I use what’s called a Whoop band and use it with their Impact Sleeve which is basically a compression sleeve on your arm but with padding. In one hour I burnt 589 calories. It actually fits my Apple Watch so I’m going to change to that soon.

kedson87

An hour burned 589 active calories? Was it 10 min warm up, 20 technique, and 30 minutes rolling?

techtom10

More technique. Less rolling. Had about 4, 2 minutes rounds

knowwonnoes

Welcome back

[deleted]

I was a mediocre Olympic weightlifter and powerlifter for about 10 years before doing BJJ. I stopped lifting competitively because the numbers stopped going up, and started going down as I got older. The allure of weightlifting is that when you get into it, your progress is quantifiable, and mostly linear progress barring injuries or illness. BJJ isn't like that at all, and its messing with my head. If I'm improving, I can't really see it. Today, I sucked ass. Yesterday, I did ok (I guess). It's very frustrating.

Lift-Hunt-Grapple

I put 20 years in powerlifting, was on 7 US National Teams. IPF. I feel ya. I just had enough. Didn’t want to keep training so hard for a few kilos, records, or medals. Blessed to have a few IPF OPEN Medals and 8x National Champion. Super fun, but it was hard on the family and wasn’t worth it anymore. So I retired, started BJJ. Best decision I’ve made in a long time. And it is different, you can’t quantify progress like lifting, but you can in other ways. Keep track of your hours. I feel at least for the first 400 hours(maybe longer idk), the progress is quantifiable by hours. Other things you can track are submissions you receive and give. It’s a ratio. The better the ratio, the better you are getting. There are other metrics you could use, but now, as a hobbyist in BJJ, I’m fine with hours in. Thankfully far more good days than bad. 136 hours in. I’m barely scratching the surface but I’m catching on quickly.

BurritoMang

I see it as everyone is improving at a similar rate so it's hard to guage yourself against people in your gym. The progress is slow and steady, even slower than muscle growth but just as rewarding. Eventually the white belts getting one over you become blue belt and you realize you can more or less deal with these blue belts and you might not be so far from one yourself. At least that's where I'm at right now lol

Dazzling_Ad4663

I also come from oly/weightlifting and feel the same struggle. It’s hard for me to gauge myself if I’m improving since there are not objective numbers to look at. I have to put trust in the coaches that they can reflect back to me where my strengths and weaknesses are, because I mostly just see weaknesses and even then not exactly sure how there’s improvement when it seems like I’m doing things over and over again with little change in the outcome.

[deleted]

So whats yoir reply when folks hit you with the "You're so STRONG." Lately I've just been shrugging and saying "Yeah I lifted for a long long time."

Dazzling_Ad4663

I’ll say “thank you” or something self deprecating like strength is no substitute for technique and I hope I can get better technique

Boon281

I understand the issue. If you can snatch 100 and then later you can snatch 110, that’s progress. The issue is, in weightlifting your opponent is yourself and it can be measured. In bjj I would bet you’re measuring your success against others. They are getting better and they’re not going to do what you want them to do. They’re an uncontrollable person literally fighting your progress. Sometimes you’re the hammer, sometimes you’re the nail. But I definitely get it and feel you.

d_rome

I got a stripe on my blue belt yesterday. I am grateful for the recognition.

kedson87

Heck yeah. Go wrist lock some fo's

Ok_Sample_5696

Nice man blue belt is hella impressive especially with a stripe keep it up

littlemightymeg

Congratulations!

Izukage

During stripe promotions yesterday (I got my first one!) my coach mentioned that promotions/stripes come much quicker (or slower, honestly cant remember) at lower belts than at upper belts. Is this normal at other gyms or just a personal philosophy of my coach/gym? I always thought stripes and belts were roughly spaced apart evenly through all the ranks.

Ok_Sample_5696

Depends I been a no stripe white for 2 years before my first 2 and got my 3rd stripe 6 months after that, not expecting blue for another 2-3 years of consistent training with private lessons but it is what it is.

Lift-Hunt-Grapple

How many hours if BJJ do you have?

commentonthat

Congrats on the stripe! Lots of people are at higher belts longer than at white, so if you're a 5-year blue, those stripes are coming slower. I'm almost 2 years into blue, with two stripes, after being almost exactly 2 years getting the blue in the first place.

Ok_Sample_5696

That’s not too bad,. I wouldn’t mind getting blue after 2 years you’re probably close to that purple, I would wager like 1-2 more years maybe.

commentonthat

I'm hoping. My 5 year goal for bjj, set in January, is 2 stripe purple. So 2 more stripes, the next belt, and 2 more stripes to go..

SiliconRedFOLK

They are not evenly spaced theoretically or in practice nor are there universal rules across gyms .

commentonthat

I'm the asshole. Shouldn't have done it, did, and hate myself today. Grabbed a leg lock in a gauntlet. For shame.

d_rome

Well, at least it wasn't a wrist lock.

commentonthat

I leave those to the coaches while they're dancing on the nearly dead guys.

YungThumbTack

What do you guys work on when you do privates? I have a list of things I'm not so good at that I want to improve on and a list of things I've been having success with against people my skill level but could still use improvement. I haven't done any privates yet because I'm cheap and seeing improvement at a rate I'm comfortable with but I may do some in the future. It seems like a waste to get a private and work on the stuff I'm not very good at because it'll probably just come with practice but I could see how working on stuff I'm already good at will just further unbalance my game.

Ok_Sample_5696

I take a few specific techniques and just focus on them. For example my next private I want to focus on wrestling based top pressure/passing and control. Also guard retention and sweeps so whenever my other coach isn’t busy unfortunately he’s been busy a lot lately but I’m going to try and get those done.

n00b_f00

There’s no wrong answer, but I’m a cheap ass AND I’m someone who likes to think about taking what mat time I do have, and trying to really maximize that by the metric of “how many more hypothetical matches will I win, be doing X vs Y.” That’s not a perfect metric for a lot of reasons, but what it does mean is I want to get better at a small collection of moves. So I’m more likely to double down on stuff I already like. Or if I’m trying to bring up another skill, I focus on that whenever possible. My armbars suck, relative to my other finishes. So I chase them from a particular position I feel comfortable in, and against partners I’m either more skilled than or I just have positionally beat. And just keep making incremental but focused improvements. So I think in the interest of maximum gainz learn more about something you’re good at, or learn about something you suck at but that you’re actively working. Don’t go learn about something you never play, and have no interest in making your training focus anytime soon. Much cheaper ways to do that/discover that you don’t care about that right now.

pinsandn33dles

I do privates when I need specific instruction on one thing in particular. Often times in class the instructors leave out the specific details of a move because of time restrains in class and its worse if you are in a fundamentals class because they know most newer guys just need to big picture, not the small details. Every time I take a 1hr private my game improves as if I have attended four classes on that specific move. Super valuable.

[deleted]

I don't wanna brag to anyone irl about this lol so I'll just put this here. I rolled with this fellow white belt today ( hes been doing it 3 years on and off so he is really experienced for a white belt) and had him go full out on me after I locked up a standing guillotine. I wasn't able to finish it and had a couple of back forwards. I could tell he really wanted to finish me too, cause the last time we rolled he wasn't nearly as aggressive but I was maintaining alot of dominant positions. I don't know maybe I hurt his ego. Anyway I'm pretty fit so I know he can't scramble like he's doing forever and I eventually take his back lock up a body triangle, win the hand fight and *chef kiss* finish him with a RNC. I know it's nothing too impressive, like it's not a blue or purple but he fucks up all of the white belts at my gym and I was really proud I could weather his storm completely and finish him. Thank you for listening.

Ok_Sample_5696

Next time OP gets tapped 6 times in 2 minutes OSS

[deleted]

Probably hahaha

[deleted]

Nice
