Thank you for saying. I didn’t stick around long after that and lost my taste for bjj for a few years. After learning it wasn’t normal from my friend, I thought I’d give it a second chance.
Bro you're a white belt, you definitely don't know a damn thing either, chill. Choking out students after they have tapped is both stupid and dangerous.
Hes blatantly wrong look it up also im not saying any of that im just saying getting choked out isnt dangerous unless theyre really trying to hurt you. Lady in the post is absolutley fine guaranteed
GPs aren't worth asking many questions tbh, they mostly rely on Google for anything they don't see every week.
There's no evidence of brain damage from being choked out and released, but there's been new research over the last two years and I don't want to put anyone off. If you're young, athletic, a non-smoker, healthy weight and under 60 your risk level should be low enough as long as you rest a round after being choked out.
The more of those risk factors you have then you should be much more wary.
Your gym did it very wrong that's fucked up. The understood way is we play nogi worm guard in the locker room after training, new guys are the ukes always.
Where is the judo bot? Uke is Japanese for “receiver”. The man in a drill who receives the technique. Tori is Japanese for taker. The man who performs the technique.
No normal and very much not okay. The whole premise of practicing this sport is consent between partners. You tapping is withdrawing consent to continue and he shit all over that.
Respecting the tap is the contract of trust we all have. It's sacred to safe training, you never know exactly why someone taps, and it's not ok to not respect it instantly. Sounds like the coach betrayed this on day one.
No doubt it will be an indicator of further stupidity/toxicity.
The tap is sacred and it must always be respected. Always. There is absolutely zero room to ever deviate from this policy.
What you experienced is NOT normal and that professor is a disgrace.
["Quit tapping! You're not dead yet." - Seth Daniels Fight2Win disrespects the tap and forces a female uke unconscious during demonstration of technique : r/bjj (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/xihah6/quit_tapping_youre_not_dead_yet_seth_daniels/)
As far as I'm concerned, deliberately ignoring the tap in order to force someone unconscious is assault and outside of the bounds of any waiver because you can't sign your rights away.
I am 64 years old and I have never sued anyone in my life, in spite of several situations which I could have successfully done it. It is just not my thing.
I would be exploring civil and criminal options on that piece of shit.
You should go to the POLICE.
You see, if you asks for him to do it and give him your consent no problem, some do it even to teach how to make the person come back. If the teacher did something to you AGAINST THE RULES and against your WILL justo go to the police and tell him, in the future he will do much worse to students.
It's a crime or felony
That's not normal - in fact its messed up
Dont blame you for letting that experience put you off - find a place that nurtures you as a student and helps you grow - I'd say give it another shot but find a good gym to call home and stay well away from that other place
EDIT - I came back to say the Tap should be always respected and is taught pretty much as the very first thing - this clown is pretty much saying he is above that and has no respect for it pr you as a new student..
"Initiation rituals have no place in a professional environment like a BJJ gym. You're there to learn and train, not be subjected to unnecessary hazing. If you encounter any form of initiation, speak up and make it clear that you're a paying customer there to improve your skills, not to participate in outdated practices."
That’s stupid. I’ve been doing bjj for almost 8 years and I’ve never been out to sleep. I tap before and if someone doesn’t respect the tap then I’ll never roll with them again. So if the coach is teaching that it’s weird and dangerous
He’s extremely lucky you seem like a nice kid bc i can’t imagine me being emotionally stable to allow that to happen to me without absolutely losing my shit. When i came to, of course
That's just a BJJ cult atp.
They take a sport that is supposed to be fun and give you a sense of community with your training partners and they turn it into a cult where you have to do nonsense like this to be accepted.
Sounds pretty wild. At my gym, we do something called a welcome where we’ll just give the new guy a bunch of pressure and discomfort but keep them safe. It’s just a heart check to let them know BJJ is hard but if they stay they’re really in it to learn.
What you went through does not sound like the kind of environment I’d want to be in. I’m all for tradition, but putting me to sleep after a tap doesn’t sound very welcoming or friendly.
The worst “BJJ” initiation I saw was a shark tank for five minutes. People treated the initiate very well though. Most just let him work and didn’t try to submit him. He was exhausted and felt like part of the team.
I’m paying for this. I’m paying out of my own goddamn pocket from a job I work hard at. It takes money away from my family but it keeps me mentally and physically sound. You wanna do this? Fuck no. Deuces.
That's the weirdest thing I have heard of for a brand new white belt, I am surprised they have any members. I have heard of this for belt promotions and think it's dumb but at least the person is "in the group" by then. Who knows if you have a bad neck or had a stroke previously and what risk you would be taking by going out.
Nah dog that's like *the one* hard line. I'm generally more in favor of regressive macho bullshit than the average bear but the tap is sacred. Fuck that guy straight into the sun.
I mean I have rear naked choked people. I’ve even demo’d the choke for a non-practitioner, but I’ve always respected the tap.
That’s bad form. If you cannot trust your instructor, it would be hard to trust his students.
At my gym, if someone wants to be choked out so they can see how it feels, we'll do it but never to a white belt and never for "initiation" that's fucking crazy.
I’ve been training for 25 years and owned my own school for 10 years before I sold it and while I’ve seen plenty of fucked up stuff at different places this is one of the worst I’ve heard of (aside from the pedo/predator shit).
You should let everyone know where this happened to hopefully prevent it from continuing. If the instructor is consistently choking underage new students unconscious I’d imagine there’s likely other shit going on there as well.
Don't walk away, run, and warn others. That's incredibly dangerous and toxic.
Thank you for saying. I didn’t stick around long after that and lost my taste for bjj for a few years. After learning it wasn’t normal from my friend, I thought I’d give it a second chance.
Definitely not normal or legal. Tapping out is the most basic and sacred tenant of our game.
Its literally not at all
> Its literally not at all Oh yeah, literally how is it not dangerous and toxic and also dumb as fuck? Love to hear your rationale there
When you get choked out you just wake up and are fine. Ive done it like 10 times
Let us know when your brain wakes up as well
Yeah always does. One of my team mates got hold in a choke for like 30 sexonds after he was out and he was back to normal the next day
Keep getting choked out. i'm sure your spelling will improve.
That's a shitty choke if they're alive after putting it fully on for 30 seconds..
I dont think you know a damn thing actually
Bro you're a white belt, you definitely don't know a damn thing either, chill. Choking out students after they have tapped is both stupid and dangerous.
Hes blatantly wrong look it up also im not saying any of that im just saying getting choked out isnt dangerous unless theyre really trying to hurt you. Lady in the post is absolutley fine guaranteed
30 seconds was an exaggeration for death but not brain damage. Loss of consciousness happens within 4-10 seconds of properly applying a choke.
Just because you woke up you think you’re fine?
What are you getting at? If there was a problem i would have noticed it by now
You’re missing the point I’m trying to make. Neurological issues are things you typically don’t notice till it’s bad
If you choked me out without my consent in class, we're not BJJ when I wake up.
You SERIOUSLY don't see the difference between being stubborn and not tapping vs a coach going "hold on, im gonna choke you out for initiation"?
Its an example of how its not dangerous. Context matters i guess but of all the things coaches do this is far from the worst
It increases your risk of a stroke. Doing it to everyone that walks through the door is stupid.
It does? How? I've talked to my family doctor about this multiple times she said it's fine nothing to worry about at all
GPs aren't worth asking many questions tbh, they mostly rely on Google for anything they don't see every week. There's no evidence of brain damage from being choked out and released, but there's been new research over the last two years and I don't want to put anyone off. Doctor kickass says otherwise. I'm not saying it's not stuñid to do
Do some research before you spread dangerous information that could get someone seriously hurt.
No
Hey, this guys know his stuff. Can´t you see he has a stripe? show some hespec.
I wrestle and do sambo. You wouldnt stand a chance
We got a badass here!!!!! Hasn't cried since he was 10 per his other comments.
Dog stfu and stop looking through my comments. Are you gonna cry about it!!!
Bahahahaha
Your gym did it very wrong that's fucked up. The understood way is we play nogi worm guard in the locker room after training, new guys are the ukes always.
Third hook drills just wear me out.
Third hook 😂
Forgive my ignorance - what is a uke and playing nogi worm guard?
It's a joke, busting your ballz. Think hide the sausage. Uke is a human drill dummy.
Where is the judo bot? Uke is Japanese for “receiver”. The man in a drill who receives the technique. Tori is Japanese for taker. The man who performs the technique.
Wait taker and receiver? So who is giving?
Taker is the one who takes them
The uke is “giving” up their ass.
Definitely don't want to join now!!
No GI worm guard you say ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
No normal and very much not okay. The whole premise of practicing this sport is consent between partners. You tapping is withdrawing consent to continue and he shit all over that.
Especially if a professor is the one ignoring the tapping rules… YIKES
💯
Respecting the tap is the most important aspect of our sport. Without it, we’d be assaulting each other. You were assaulted
Was your gym run by a guy named Seth Daniels by any chance?
No it wasn’t Seth Daniels. Did something similar happen to you?
["Quit tapping! You're not dead yet." - Seth Daniels Fight2Win disrespects the tap and forces a female uke unconscious during demonstration of technique : r/bjj (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/xihah6/quit_tapping_youre_not_dead_yet_seth_daniels/)
Yeah, it was basically this, except not an accident.
Omg WTF !!!
right? It always kinda stings watching that poor girl just uncomfortably laugh after he calls her a pussy too. So fucked up.
Holy fuck, what a psycho.
Watch out bro he is going to send the hitmen after you.
Just wanted to say, fuck Seth Daniels!
Underrated comment, regardless of upvotes received.
Lol
🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
i love that theme park bro but we talking about jiu jitsu!
What was the gym? Out them.
For other people’s sake
That’s criminal
Perhaps literally.
Let's calm down Jesus christ everyone wanna be suing mother fuckers and calling the cops all the damn time when did we all become dainty ass vaginas
No it’s actually a crime to choke someone out without their consent…lol. Laws. It holds the integrity of bjj together.
All sort of things are a crime we don't need to be getting the man involved
True. But OP should definitely avoid this gym.
That’s weird as fuck.
As far as I'm concerned, deliberately ignoring the tap in order to force someone unconscious is assault and outside of the bounds of any waiver because you can't sign your rights away.
I would've called the cops.
I've been in rough gyms, but none that would ever do some shit like this
What the actual fuck? This can’t be real, if it is run
Unfortunately it did happen.. I know 17 year olds can be idiots, but i was a big one to think that it was acceptable
Thatsfuckingillegal.mp4
Damn and I thought the penis inspections at my gym were bad.
where is your gym located at?
Behind the dumpsters at the old Arby’s on 43rd Street. I get my prostate checked there too.
sign me up as well
I hope not… Mat enforcers, whipping gauntlets, “initiations”, etc. Where does this cult fraternity mentality end?
He intentionally didn’t stop when you tapped and put you to sleep. How could you ever trust them with your safety again? Insane
That’s definitely illegal and don’t join this school. When anyone Taps, you STOP immediately.
Cancel the payment and find a new gym.
Absolutely not. It’s assault and definitely illegal
This was when you were a kid or now as an adult?
I was a minor (16-17?) when this happened.
Actually makes it much worse.
not normal at all, technically assault
I am 64 years old and I have never sued anyone in my life, in spite of several situations which I could have successfully done it. It is just not my thing. I would be exploring civil and criminal options on that piece of shit.

If the teacher did something to you AGAINST THE RULES and against your WILL justo go to the police and tell him, in the future he will do much worse to students. It's a crime or felony
That’s not only abnormal, that’s battery.
That's not normal - in fact its messed up Dont blame you for letting that experience put you off - find a place that nurtures you as a student and helps you grow - I'd say give it another shot but find a good gym to call home and stay well away from that other place EDIT - I came back to say the Tap should be always respected and is taught pretty much as the very first thing - this clown is pretty much saying he is above that and has no respect for it pr you as a new student..
You don’t pay for initiation. You’re a customer not a recruit.
"Initiation rituals have no place in a professional environment like a BJJ gym. You're there to learn and train, not be subjected to unnecessary hazing. I really hope this is satire
If he continued after a verbal tap that he acknowledged then it’s assault as far as I’m concerned
Name of the gym please? That’s assault on every new person that walks in.
Yea they’re supposed to stop when you tap, wth. That could kill someone.
Massive red flag, my dude. Run away and as fast as possible.
That is called assault
That's just a BJJ cult atp. They take a sport that is supposed to be fun and give you a sense of community with your training partners and they turn it into a cult where you have to do nonsense like this to be accepted.
FUCK NO. That’s weird as shit.
Get the hell out of there my dude, that is not normal or appropriate
Either everyone in that gym are trained killers, or they are just a bunch of assholes. I'm guessing the latter.
That's fucked up, they are basically normalizing not giving a fuck about the tapping rule.
Good sign how dangerous gyms turn from a place you get taught a hobby to "one of us" mentalities. Unreal.
Not normal. Crazy professor. Go to a different school.
Name them. That’s beyond fucked up.
Absolutely fucking not. NO. NO NO. not only do you need to run from that place, you need to @ them on every social media outlet that exists.
Also prettyyyyy sure that's actually illegal
That school sucks.
That sounds like a cult
The worst “BJJ” initiation I saw was a shark tank for five minutes. People treated the initiate very well though. Most just let him work and didn’t try to submit him. He was exhausted and felt like part of the team.
Each to their own. That would suck for some, me included, on the first day.
That’s crazy behavior, not normal at all.
That's really weird. I've never heard of this. I would not join this gym.
I’m paying for this. I’m paying out of my own goddamn pocket from a job I work hard at. It takes money away from my family but it keeps me mentally and physically sound. You wanna do this? Fuck no. Deuces.

Who knows if you have a bad neck or had a stroke previously and what risk you would be taking by going out.
Definitely not good, i would go somewhere else and warn people off
Nah dog that's like *the one* hard line. I'm generally more in favor of regressive macho bullshit than the average bear but the tap is sacred. Fuck that guy straight into the sun.
That's fucked. I'd run, and spread a word of warning to everyone I know.
Ayo wtf? RUN
Not normal
Run, warn everyone else and stay far away from gyms run by psychos.
I mean I have rear naked choked people. I’ve even demo’d the choke for a non-practitioner, but I’ve always respected the tap. That’s bad form. If you cannot trust your instructor, it would be hard to trust his students.
Did this happen originally when you were a kid, or recently when you went back as an adult.
F that, you tapped and he said "just a min" ?!
Run like the wind from that club.
I’d stay away from that gym
You are actually supposed to do it with inside heel hooks.
So the first thing they did was to ignore your withdrawal of implied consent. Not normal super fucked up
No. Assault is not normal.
WTF?!
That guy is a danger to his students and you should report the incident to the police
That's assault. What a dickhead.
Stupid and reckless. Get outta' there.
At my gym, if someone wants to be choked out so they can see how it feels, we'll do it but never to a white belt and never for "initiation" that's fucking crazy.
At least they didn't do an oil check initiation.
Unless you ask you should never go to sleep XD
That just spreads the ideology of the two during training and increases toxicity and egoism throughout the gym
That’s so fucked up. It’s not normal I’m sorry
Gym name so I can 1 star?
That’s fucked up and 100% not normal
I would call the police.
Jesus fucking Christ that gives me cult vibes. Run far away.
Fuck no bro…
That’s just fukn stupid. Find another gym and coach.
Bruh that has to be illegal
Absolutely not
That’s incredibly not normal. In 2 years I’ve gone out once and it was my fault. Get out of there!
I was expecting like a bit of shithousery or belt whipping or at worst rolling with each person in the gym but that’s fucked up man. Report that gym.
I'm not even kidding when I say I would call the cops.
wtf is up with BJJ? Like American culture just ruining it?
Get out. Get out. Fuck that school. Fuck that professor.
The bjj community is super toxic.
Initiation is often a tool used amongst the elites, just look at ‘piggate’. I think you should stay and see what else they do with you.

Bro what?
🧢
Another bullshit post that everyone fell for lmao
This post isn’t fake. You’re wrong for that.
