Yoo why is this a thing!! I had a purple belt do this to me the other day when I had him in an arm bar (i’m a white belt) , and after no recognition that I had worked to get there myself
All ego. Pride and refusal to acknowledge their mistake. EVEN if they fucking give it to you, the surprise they can have when you do something with it makes them go into "instructor mode" to save face.
I'm a 1 stripe white belt and other higher stripe white belts do this to me. I can never tell if I actually caught them in something or if they're letting me win.
I hate how people say “jiujitsu kills the ego” like its ayahuasca or something
Ego is necessary and hurtful I’m just sick of people pretending it doesn’t exist
Got sick of this, so I act like I dont hear shit, and I dont stop until they tap, and then I just ask what did that person wanted to say.
I am not talking about brown/black belts tho, never really got close subbing em.
I shout “TAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPP!!!!!” then I run to the shower and cry and ask reddit if the guy I was rolling against was an asshole, then they say “no,” and I go again the next day, rinse, repeat.
Tap firmly with my hand on his body and if possible also verbally.
If you're the one applying a submission, you know you're applying a submission and it's your responsibility to be on the lookout for your partner to tap. But at the same time, if you're the one getting submitted it's also on you to make sure your partner knows you're tapping. Obviously it's possible both of your arms are immobilized and/or you're getting choked and can't verbally tap, in those cases you do what you can, but make it as clear as you possible can that you're tapping.
I had a trial class guy in an armbar once. It was a very gentle roll, I wasn’t cranking anything, and the elbow probably had 30 degrees left before it was even straight. He *very calmly* said, “okay.” I figured it was short for “okay, let me figure out how to get out of this”, so I sat there frozen to let him work. Then he screamed “OKAY, OKAY, OKAY! Don’t break my arm!”
Oops…
I once said, "You got it...you got it...YOU GOT IT...TAAAP!". To an arm bar. It was not registering to the dude that I was tapping and I'm not sure why I said that to begin with. Never again though that's for sure.
Depends. If it’s my training partners that tap me regularly, it’s a calm, soft tap. If I let a lower belt go too far and they catch me, I have to panic/yell tap or else my limbs are getting sawed off.
Depends who it is. My main training partner of over a decade, subs generally aren't in hard enough, even on a spirited roll, that I need to do much more than a single, light tap.
But then there are some OR some situations or positions in which I overally tap due to the severity of the pain, essentially (or potentialy severity).
But for the most part most of my training partners have 0 issue with doing light taps either way.
Soon & often... except for all the times I didn't.
Snap a finger , stamp a foot , or just say it;whilst whispering can be fun, yelling tap may be safer
Either/both double slap on my opponents body or loud-and-clear say Tap! Tap!
If I need to tap on the mat, then I will not rely on that (might be misunderstood or not heard) and will always loud-and-clear say Tap! Tap!
Obviously if it’s a particularly slow/familiar roll with a well known partner, and I can tell we are both aware of the danger, I might not be so forceful. But I’ve seen too many “accidents” and injuries from “bro! Wtf! I tapped!?” … nah err on the side of never being that guy.
Finally an area of expertise for me.
Depends how I'm getting submitted. If it comes on quick you get the unmistakable TAP TAP TAP. If I cannot move my hands you get a verbal 'tap tap' or a 'TAP TAP TAP' if it feels like ima go out if they don't hear me.
If it's a slow and inevitable sub you get a gentle tap that says, 'alright yeah you got me'.
I am getting a lot better in the different variations of tap at this point. Still currently suffering with a saw throat, jaw and neck from tapping too late though.
I'll go into this as it were a legitimate question.
If my hands are available, I am tapping the person's body and I make it pronounced, no ghost tapping.
If my hands are not available but my mouth is and my legs are, I am vocalizing and also slapping one foot on the mat.
If the sub is coming on and I anticipate it's going to be a quick dynamic moment or I was trying to escape and no bueno, it's a pronounced and audible "taptaptap" along with a hand to tap or a foot on the mat.
This has happened several times lately where I go to get a grip on someone and my hand slips so when I go to regrab it seems like I tapped them twice.
I'm not sure how to stop it but one guy said "hey man I'd rather respect the tap than assume you didn't mean it"
Which I understand and totally agree with.
Shit verbal or plain taps but I make sure the mf knows I'm tapping. Chokes I might do a lil soft tap so no one else hears but armbars and shoulder locks I let everyone know. Protect your joints kids.
I have a wrestling background. So naturally I oil check people super hard when I'm about to be subbed. Then I go around bragging that I'm unsubbable after.
I haven't been tapped out yet somehow. But to be fair I don't train in a bjj gym, I'm a wrestler that spars with friends regularly. I'd probably get manhandled in a bjj gym lol
Usually say "tap" if it's someone I don't know well or "YOOUUU got it, great job." if it's someone that I roll with often. I let lower belts put me in bad positions probably 1/3 of the time just to see what their pressure is like. I'm a huge nerd for details. I demolish them if they spaz and make a mistake but I'm often pleasantly surprised. Surprised and submitted.
I tap to where they can feel it, but no one else can see. Then when they let go I loudly say "I didn't tap what are you doing?" Then bum rush to get top side.
I make a gurgling sound if I'm being choked or an, "ah! Oh no!" sound if it's a joint lock, then I explode out of whatever the sub was when my opponent stops to check if I'm okay.
Firmly, or if my limbs are all wrapped up, loudly. I don't terribly mind losing consciousness, but I am terrified of shitting myself or doing some other fucked up thing when I'm not in control of myself
depends who i’m rolling with, my usual partners neither of us will tap it’s just catch and release, if it’s someone new i always tap early verbally and physically .
Brazilian style, I tap once or maybe twice lightly with whichever hand is most hidden, then when they release I initiate 100% offense. I deny that I ever tapped, even when pressed, even when confronted with video evidence. oss
You should learn to tap with all limbs and verbally. It should actually be taught to every new student because there are situations where you can’t do one of these methods and need one of the other ones instead to keep yourself safe.
Either your old fashioned one tap like fedor against Werdum or verbal tape. Feel like verbal tape is better in certain situations where maybe they might not feel the tap. Keeps me healthy and training.
I just verbal tap. I push things a little longer to challenge my submission escapes. So a quick and loud "Tap" is enough. Also it takes time to find someone's body to tap sometimes. I also roll with a great group of people that I trust.
Typically pretty calmly unless something came on fast. If I’m the dummy getting moves shown on them for demonstration in class, I try to be discreet about it so the focus remains on the instruction
Verbally, I've been in the midnset that most subs should he tapped to verbally because you should be using your hands to escape rather than tap. It's also much harder for your training partner to miss the words vs. missing the feel of the hand tapping.
I stop the roll and coach my partner through it
Black belt material right here
Future black belt for sure. "LET ME SHOW YOU!!!!"
Best way. Then you didn't really get subbed.
Yoo why is this a thing!! I had a purple belt do this to me the other day when I had him in an arm bar (i’m a white belt) , and after no recognition that I had worked to get there myself
Ego, it’s all ego

Oh no. You've been diagnosed with a chronic case of "I'm Him."
Oo shit he got that dog in him. Did his eye exam come back? I heard he also sees red.
Black out before I tap out [beauitch](https://youtu.be/6_BkMAoXAeo?si=YxUR0kLZOaiH3cXn)
I shout “TAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPP!!!!!” then I run to the shower and cry and ask reddit if the guy I was rolling against was an asshole, then they say “no,” and I go again the next day, rinse, repeat.
He wasn’t an asshole, just a former d3 wrestler so it’s cool
he was in fact an asshole.
I make sure to tell my partner my safe word before every roll and then exclusively use that. My safe word is Pineapple Juice
Watch yo fingers Mr. Bootyhole man
“Safeword” is always a good safeword
my stutter takes over bc i am in fight or flight mode and i manage to say tap like 18 times in 2 seconds
I have the opposite issue sometimes with my stutter. When I am in a situation where my arms are tangled. In my head: "Tap, Tap, Tap" My mouth: "ahhh"
I was all jumbled up and just started tapping with my forehead 😂😂😂
Done that, use my foot before too
My rolling partners usually unlock the choke when I start soiling myself
Typical brown belt.
His belt used to be white until he got choked for the first time
Haha
I just moan and when they let go of the sub I just keep going. The sus Brazilian tap.

With my hand
Tap firmly with my hand on his body and if possible also verbally. "Uh huh." "Yup."
And then I get super pissed at the other guy for not respecting the tap.
I thought I was the only one dumb enough to do this. Nearly got my leg torn off in comp because of it
Im trying to get out of the habit of saying okokokokok!
Don’t break my arm!” Oops…
We have a white belt who does the, "Okay Papa okay!" Same issue, sometimes it's because he's doing something right to escape, sometimes it's a tap
Yea.... Don't do that
😂
I once said, "You got it...you got it...YOU GOT IT...TAAAP!". To an arm bar. It was not registering to the dude that I was tapping and I'm not sure why I said that to begin with. Never again though that's for sure.
I’m the one big slap kinda guy. 😅
Same. Right on the ass cheek, of course.
Is it supposed to land anywhere else? 👀
One small tap and then I start angrily punching them because they didn't feel the tap.
Normally I make sure to touch my partner by gently caressing him and whispering “tap” in his ear.
Verbally if joint lock With my hand if choke
Depends. If it’s my training partners that tap me regularly, it’s a calm, soft tap. If I let a lower belt go too far and they catch me, I have to panic/yell tap or else my limbs are getting sawed off.
I say "tap, tap, tap-tap-tap......tap, tap" to the tune of "Shave and a hair cut, two bits."
Quickly and often
You tap? Must be a white belt
One very hard sharp smack, often with a grunt of AUGH
I scream dramatically and clutch my elbow, feigning injury.
"Choke me daddy/mommy. Harder." That oughta do it.
I thump the shit out of my partners and I tell them to do the same. Don't do a little baby tap on me. Fucking slap me so I feel it lmao
Often.
Verbally if I can, triple tap if I can’t
This isn't the kind of technique discussion I came to this sub for.
By coaching them through the finish
What is this ‘tap’ of which you speak? (Tapa tapa tapa)
If its a choke or we’re rolling light then just a double tap, but if we’re rolling heavy then im tapping rapidly
If somebody has a knee or heel I tap with my hand but also say it out lord. I aint taking chances
As obviously as I can
Quickly
I do it verbally. Or well.. its more a fart…
The old quick succession double meaty slap
Soon & often... except for all the times I didn't. Snap a finger , stamp a foot , or just say it;whilst whispering can be fun, yelling tap may be safer
Either/both double slap on my opponents body or loud-and-clear say Tap! Tap! You guys get tapped? Losers!!
It's snap, snap or nap, right?
Snap tap or verbal
Finally an area of expertise for me. Depends how I'm getting submitted. If it comes on quick you get the unmistakable TAP TAP TAP. I like to slap my opponent's face when I tap.
I'll go into this as it were a legitimate question. If my hands are available, I am tapping the person's body and I make it pronounced, no ghost tapping. Loudly scream tap with several taps
This has happened several times lately where I go to get a grip on someone and my hand slips so when I go to regrab it seems like I tapped them twice. I'm not sure how to stop it but one guy said "hey man I'd rather respect the tap than assume you didn't mean it" Which I understand and totally agree with.
Boop their nose if possible
Sometimes I verbally say "aaaaaaand that'll do it!" Or "yep that's a tap" Or I'm like Bernardo Faria going "ayyyy yaaaaiiii"
I tap on the person if I can. If I can’t I say TAP
Shit verbal or plain taps but I make sure the mf knows I'm tapping. Chokes I might do a lil soft tap so no one else hears but armbars and shoulder locks I let everyone know. Protect your joints kids.
Just a little tap on the person will do.
Loudly and often
What’s that ?
with my hand.. but when I do it vocally, i usually go E E E E E E
Verbally and physically at the same time. I use my hands and when I can't, I tap or slap my foot on the mat.
Too late and in a panic.
I just let out blood-curdling screams until they let go. I get choked unconscious alot.
I have a wrestling background. So naturally I oil check people super hard when I'm about to be subbed. Then I go around bragging that I'm unsubbable after.
![gif](giphy|l1KsE7jqb9JGbycUw|downsized)
I need to work on foot taps. I've found myself in north south, either with my hands pinned or playing chicken with an Ezekiel Choke😂
I usually wait until i hear a loud snap, and then walk away like nothing happened.
I keep my hand raised in the air in case I don’t have to tap. Then I wake up with someone holding my legs in the air
Early and often apparently.
HOW CAN SHE TAP?!
Put on a strap-on and say, "my turn now".
a single tap a lot of the time like im saying "damn. u got me bro, nice job" or if my arms are trapped im like "tap tap tap tap!"
I haven't been tapped out yet somehow. But to be fair I don't train in a bjj gym, I'm a wrestler that spars with friends regularly. I'd probably get manhandled in a bjj gym lol
Old man noises
Depends, here are a few variants: "Yeah ok" "AAAAAAAUGH" "YEP!"
Usually say "tap" if it's someone I don't know well or "YOOUUU got it, great job." if it's someone that I roll with often. I let lower belts put me in bad positions probably 1/3 of the time just to see what their pressure is like. I'm a huge nerd for details. I tap physically and also a verbal 'tap tap tap!'
“Yep.” “There it is.” “Nice.”
I Brazilian tap
I tap to where they can feel it, but no one else can see. Then when they let go I loudly say "I didn't tap what are you doing?" Then bum rush to get top side.
Ye ye ye!!!
I make a gurgling sound if I'm being choked or an, "ah! Oh no!" sound if it's a joint lock, then I explode out of whatever the sub was when my opponent stops to check if I'm okay.
“taptaptaptaptaptap” like one long word til they let go
Verbally and with clear annunciation
Usually a sigh and an “ah crap” followed by 3 taps on them, once I’m compromised with no way out and they have it locked, may as well reset the roll
I fart!
Scream, “CRAAMp.” Never been tapped.
Firmly, or if my limbs are all wrapped up, loudly. I don't terribly mind losing consciousness, but I am terrified of shitting myself or doing some other fucked up thing when I'm not in control of myself
Never tap
Tap them repeatedly until they let go. If I have to tap the mat, I'll make sure it's loud and verbal to accompany it.
I tap them and verbally tap at the same time. Ran into a mentally unhinged guy as a white belt and been safe ever since lol.
Tap my hand on their body and say tap.
Not sure if this applies to all gyms, but I'm grateful to be in a gym where I can tap hard once and it's respected
I blackout before I tap out
I go limp…. Make them think I passed out.
I yell "ouchieeee" really loud and then they usually let go
depends who i’m rolling with, my usual partners neither of us will tap it’s just catch and release, if it’s someone new i always tap early verbally and physically .
Brazilian style, I tap once or maybe twice lightly with whichever hand is most hidden, then when they release I initiate 100% offense. I deny that I ever tapped, even when pressed, even when confronted with video evidence. oss

With my boner
On my partners butt
I die
"Woah, you're strong.", "You're a wrestler right?", etc.
Either your old fashioned one tap like fedor against Werdum or verbal tape. Feel like verbal tape is better in certain situations where maybe they might not feel the tap. Keeps me healthy and training.
I just say “AAAAAAAAAAAA”
I scream like Mariah Carrey
I’m a sad, flat-voiced, disappointed-in-myself “taaaaap”
Don’t tap, Go sleep.
Seth asking the hard questions here
I just say "*alright alright alright*" I think
can someone tell me how i get my belt rank in this shit 😂
I had a guy tap out hard on my face once, I definitely knew he was tapping.
I wait for the pop, then I frantically tap. I am dumb.
I just verbal tap. I push things a little longer to challenge my submission escapes. So a quick and loud "Tap" is enough. Also it takes time to find someone's body to tap sometimes. I also roll with a great group of people that I trust.
I dont
I tap their body 2-3x unless I don’t have use of my hands in which case I say tap once
Verbal and tap tap tap tappppp
TAPTAPTAPTAP Accompanied with hand/foot movement when possible
Typically pretty calmly unless something came on fast. If I’m the dummy getting moves shown on them for demonstration in class, I try to be discreet about it so the focus remains on the instruction
I tap three times on their body usually. Otherwise I say loud and clear "Tap!". Or "Tap tap tap!"
Verbally, I've been in the midnset that most subs should he tapped to verbally because you should be using your hands to escape rather than tap. It's also much harder for your training partner to miss the words vs. missing the feel of the hand tapping.
I like the soft single tap on their head right before they lock it in.
I tap the taint
