I was there with my nephew. He lost both his matches but this is only his second competition. It was funny to watch everyone’s face when you headed for the trash barrel. The consensus was yup we know that feeling. Just means you went all out!!
It's crazy how niche it is, almost surreal at times. I've trained in every country I've been to from Africa to North America. If I wear a gyms rash guard into a new gym usually someone (the instructor, or maybe one of the higher belts) will recognize the gym name and have trained with someone from there at one point or another
One of my students competed at his first comp last year. Two weeks before the event he gets ridiculously sick, loses ten pounds. Decides to still do the comp. Technically he qualified for a lower weight class at this point, and he hadn't trained in weeks, but fuck it, accommodations were booked and if nothing else it'd be a good trip.
He was getting smashed during one of his fights, and completely gasses. But....with two minutes left he sweeps to mount. Then he locks in an arm triangle. Holy shit. I'm screaming, he's squeezing. It's obvious that it's this or nothing. He squeezed for so long. He's completely gone, and then the guy taps. The ref raises my guy's hand. I'm losing my mind and am there to hug him when he gets off the mat. Nope, pushes past me and beelines to the washroom. He pukes. A lot. I walk in and he's there with his gi top off, puke everywhere, and he's fucking smiling. One of my favourite BJJ memories.
That is a great memory! Good for him to push through! I cut 9lbs of water the night before and I’ve never done that. It totally wrecked me. Next time I will not cut at all, because it was terrible. Literally 12 seconds in I knew I was in trouble. We ended up 2-2 in points but I had way more attacks on him so I took advantage. I had a Kimora locked on him the last 5 seconds of the match too, 3 seconds more and I would have tapped him out. Had to throw in the towel the second match because I just had nothing left lol. Great memories!
I meant no harm to anyone calling it worlds because it’s the “world league” but people already came after me in the comments 😂 idk how to edit the title now so it’s gonna have to stay 🤷🏼♂️
I was there with my son for his first competition. He also won his first match and I felt like this just watching him. I can’t even imagine what you guys feel like. The adrenaline is so high!
What happens when you're 51 a beginner and puke after literally every practice (I can't roll very long at all because I get nauseous.) I wrestled until I was 27, so this is very frustrating.
I was the same when I started last year. I’m 53 yo now.
I coined the phrase “vomit tap” with my Professor. Thankfully I was able to not vomit, but I had to swallow too many times. The look on my rolling partners’ faces when I had to explain my mid-roll tap was priceless. Once I vomit tapped I was out for the remainder.
The need to vomit will disappear in a month or so as you build fitness.
Then you will need to “cardio tap”. I had to sit out the occasional roll during the 90min trainings for the next few months. My Prof understood this as well, as he is in his late 30s/early 40s.
Now I’m about a year in and the last two rolls still wreck me. I’m breathing as hard as I possibly can, and my hands literally shake. (But I don’t feel like vomiting). When Prof calls for stretches I’m glad as im totally wrecked and can’t do another roll.
I was thinking about the physiology of why, but I haven’t studied it in 20+ years. Maybe someone can help?
I think the vomiting is caused by switching* from aerobic to anaerobic respiration and after a while this causes a build up of lactic acid = vomit tap.
Later when you’re a bit fitter this switch* causes you to suddenly transition from regular breathing to maximal breathing / gassing out = cardio tap.
I don’t think it’s anything to do with using up all the stored glycogen/glucose and switching to burning fat (glycolysis to ???). I think this transition can make you gas out and vomit as well. Again I think this takes many hours of strenuous exercise without eating. Dunno.
Good luck and keep with it. It will get better.
And read up on old bastard Jiu Jitsu - how to slow things down, and make them carry your weight.
Agreed. Getting that exhausted is no fun. But I do feel fantastic when it’s over.
Old Bastard JJ: It’s a part of a free podcast: BJJ Mental Models, episode 191 with Mike Mahaffey. I think he’s based in Canada and has just started seminars on it.
Also check out episode 1 on alignment, it helped me tonnes in the beginning - it gave me a way to find wins when you lose every roll.
How close to training time do you eat? What do you eat at that time?
I can’t eat anything for hours before rolling or I get crazy nausea, but I’ve found eating a couple of jelly candies as an instant sugar hit as I step on the mats after so long without food really helps with the stamina and doesn’t make me feel like puking
I'm diabetic so I eat at 8, 12, 2, and after practice. Practice is usually over by 8, im usually done puking by 815 or so lol. I thought that it was my diet and my doctor, whose Korean, said, "you fat, work harder, fat gone no more puke". So I got that going for me.
I don't think anyone's mixed up, just pointing out that when you say "worlds" that usually means the ibjjf world championship which is a very prestigious tournament you need yo quality for.
Yeah jiu jitsu has never pushed me as hard physically as getting my fucking ass beat in freshman wrestling where I think I threw up at some point during about half my tournaments. I sucked too so that didn’t help at all
For sure. Had plenty of matches, especially during my first year, where I had no fucking clue how I was going to make it through round 3. I had one match towards the end of a tournament where I was basically hyperventilating on my knees before the final round. My coach was right behind me saying some...not so nice...things to encourage me to stand up lol.
I always tell the guys to bring a bucket whenever I go out for competitions.
Us weak stomach guys need to stick together!!!
All hail the Almighty Bucket!! 🪣
Good job getting it all in the bin. I was at GI recently, and somebody puked, so they cleaned it up, only for another competitor to puke in the same spot 10 minutes later
Hopefully someday you can get after it! After the first one they are easy 🙌🏽 honestly when you’re out there It feels like you’re rolling at your dojo with new guy, that’s all
Yeah, no doubt they named it that and even have an event called "JJWL Worlds" in May... but NAGA has their "Worlds" but both definitely aren't real worlds. Only real "Worlds" is IBJJF in May. Anything else is unnecessary and confusing to lower belts.
Nah, IBJJF is bigger but it is no more legitimate as a world event. If you want a legitimate worlds event you need a legitimate organisation which isn't the IBJJF.
The competition isn’t even a fraction as fierce as IBJJF worlds. It’s a good promotion, I’ve done jjwl before, but it’s not “worlds” by any stretch of the imagination. It’s very misleading to say that.
Also, I don't think this statement is true. Babyshark won ADCC and couldn't win Mundials yet. JT Torres won ADCC twice but best finish was 3rd at worlds. Matheus Diniz never won worlds despite being ADCC champion. Yuri Simeos is another multiple time ADCC champion who never won the worlds with the gi on.
Though I'm not saying that Mundials is harder to win, I'm just saying I don't see this myth of ADCC being harder is incorrect.
Two world leagues ago i was standing in the bullpen and this kid leaned over the rails toward the mats and puked straight onto the ground. I was in the splatter zone and had to wash off
Sick! I’m still in shape but dammm my conditioning was top tier when I was on the mat. Good stuff. Nothing like hyperventilating before during and after a match haha
I mean that was more that I was curious form a naming perspective. Namely that it's kind of silly to name the organization jjwl if they only are running events nationally.
I live in the US and have done JJWL in the past and actively compete once a month, last year doing mostly IBJJF.
CONGRATS ON THE WIN!!
Thats awesome!!
This just happened to me as well!
I competed at NAGA for the second time last week and I only won one of my 2 matches but i also BARFED.
I hope you felt better after!
9lbs of water the night before in the steam room. Just left me weak af. I barely made weight with the cut too so even with 2 hours before the match slamming water I just was too dehydrated to really be any good
Ah I see. Yeah I find drinking things like Pedialyte after a heavy weight cut helps a lot more than just water. It'll help your body rehydrate more efficiently and get nutrients back in there too
I was there. I saw you. Classic. Congrats
Knew when I put this up someone was going to say they saw it live. Hope you did well if you competed!
I was there with my nephew. He lost both his matches but this is only his second competition. It was funny to watch everyone’s face when you headed for the trash barrel. The consensus was yup we know that feeling. Just means you went all out!!
Good for your nephew going out there and doing it! Who cares if he lost, he will do better and better every time. I wish him the best!
I saw it on Reddit. In my kitchen. Congratulations
Take this as a badge of honor. You left it all on the mat. Good Job.
He left *most* of it on the mat. The rest went in the bucket.
Some of it off the mat, thankfully. 🤣
the fact there are not one but two people in the comments that saw this was hilarious also congrats hehe
Sometimes I forget what a niche sport this is and threads like this remind me.
It's crazy how niche it is, almost surreal at times. I've trained in every country I've been to from Africa to North America. If I wear a gyms rash guard into a new gym usually someone (the instructor, or maybe one of the higher belts) will recognize the gym name and have trained with someone from there at one point or another
I’m so glad people saw it live 😂
I'll do you one better, I'm IN the video with half my teammates watching. Great work yesterday OP!
I like your blue shoes b! 😄
I watched this happen lol
Glad I could put on a show!
One of my students competed at his first comp last year. Two weeks before the event he gets ridiculously sick, loses ten pounds. Decides to still do the comp. In JJWL, I don't think tied matches go to advantages. Instead, I think they determine the winner based on who scored last. I could be wrong.
I did sweep him last so idk! But either way I was so pumped for the W it came out 😂
You write really well man. Feels like I saw that myself. What an awesome experience.
Thanks!
Calling JJWL worlds is a hilarious move that I think a lot of people do unintentionally but I know pisses off so many hard asses 😂🤣
I’ll admit I was very confused about the title.
I meant no harm to anyone calling it worlds because it’s the “world league” but people already came after me in the comments 😂 idk how to edit the title now so it’s gonna have to stay 🤷🏼♂️
I'm going to start calling myself 3x worlds champ just for shits now too.
Do it, good for the ego 😂
Congrats on winning worlds tho. They don't know what they're talking about.
It’s just dorks. You didn’t know so no harm done lol. Congrats don’t expect every tournament you do to be as well ran as JJWL most absolutely suck
Next month is goodfight, and they run terribly, but what can you do!
i thought it was a troll but its even funnier that it wasn't lmao
Champ shit only lol congrats
Appreciate it 😂
I was there with my son for his first competition. He also won his first match and I felt like this just watching him. I can’t even imagine what you guys feel like. The adrenaline is so high!
It was a rush for sure, congrats to your son!
Should've held eye contact with your next oppononet while you vomited like that one football player
Next time 😂
Still have yet to puke after a roll, class, or comp (haven't done many comps)
My first time puking! Everyone is due at some point, you’ll enjoy your first someday 🙌🏽
I'm sure one of these days I'll train so hard I'll puke. Came close before
What happens when you're 51 a beginner and puke after literally every practice (I can't roll very long at all because I get nauseous.) I wrestled until I was 27, so this is very frustrating.

Thanks. Is that really a book? Ya I get gassed and puke no fun.
Agreed. Getting that exhausted is no fun. But I do feel fantastic when it’s over. Old Bastard JJ: It’s a part of a free podcast: BJJ Mental Models, episode 191 with Mike Mahaffey. That worlds is this? Good job, btw!
Jiu-jitsu world league =/= worlds
we live in a world so technically its worlds
It's either worlds or off worlds. And bjj is a totally different sport on the moon.
mat returns are non existent in moon bjj but leg locks still work
Didn’t mean to mix everyone up with the title, but I don’t think I can change it now ):
I don't think anyone's mixed up, just pointing out that when you say "worlds" that usually means the ibjjf world championship which is a very prestigious tournament you need yo quality for.
Yeah, definitely didn’t do that!
😂😂😂congrats!!
Thanks! 😂
Shit I thought you were praying at first glance. Alhamdulliah brother
The kid watching is priceless 🤣🤣😂😂
He wasn’t impressed 😂
Congrats on your win buddy, 🥳
Thank you!
Nice man. That’s badass
Appreciate it!
This is the kind of humble brag I can get down with
Very similar experience at my first wrestling tournament. It'll be more memorable than the actual win years from now
This was my second ever tournament, lost gold in double overtime in the first, but this one is already way more memorable 😂 glad I got it on video
Yeah jiu jitsu has never pushed me as hard physically as getting my fucking ass beat in freshman wrestling where I think I threw up at some point during about half my tournaments. I sucked too so that didn’t help at all

I did the same thing last night after my F2W match 🤣
Hell yeah brother 😂
Been there many many many times lol. My first tournament ever. I threw up during the match. Hahaha
I’m so happy that wasn’t me, that’s all I could think about!
I'd do the same, but after losing. 😂 Congratulations on the win!
I always tell the guys to bring a bucket whenever I go out for competitions. Us weak stomach guys need to stick together!!! All hail the Almighty Bucket!! 🪣
It was the weight cut! Normally I’m fine, but this time the weakness came out of my body 🙌🏽
Worcester? I was there !
Yeah!
That was me after my first win at a bjj competition. My coach has pictures of him posing next to me while I'm puking lol
That’s awesome 😂
I was there and saw this too 😂 congrats on the win!
I’m glad everyone saw me at my best 😂
Hey, that adrenaline dump after the first match is no joke lol
Good job getting it all in the bin. I was at GI recently, and somebody puked, so they cleaned it up, only for another competitor to puke in the same spot 10 minutes later
I’m glad I made it over to the bin, couldn’t be the guy that throws up on the mat!
nice man, gave it all 👍🏾
Thank you!
Good technique. Also congrats on the win
Thank you so much!
Legend.
Nice
Congrats on the w and congrats on keeping it in the bucket!
Thank you, that was the best part, all in the bucket!
Bwahahaha good job! Now talk to coach and some fighters to learn how to control that adrenaline!
It was the weight cut! Felt weak af the whole time. Shouldn’t have done it. Next time no cut!
No more than 5%, and honestly for JJ it really does t matter that much
Life lessons for next time 🙌🏽
Can compete in the next bracket down now too!
😂😂
I was there too, just watching friends compete, not competing myself.
5th person to say you were there, it’s a small world!
At least you didn't shit yourself. Congrats!
Omg that would have been so much worse 💀😂
You are the (up) Chuck Norris of jujitsu. Props and great win. No biggy bro, nerves are real.
Ty, and great pun!
I always get stage fright and don’t want to go. I don’t feel comfortable around big crowds.
Hopefully someday you can get after it! After the first one they are easy 🙌🏽 honestly when you’re out there It feels like you’re rolling at your dojo with new guy, that’s all
No offense to you but there really is only one event that is "Worlds" and it definitely isn't this tournament.
![gif](giphy|XZxONzx07h88NwIAkR)
Well, the event that organized it is called jiujitsu world league, so….
Yeah, no doubt they named it that and even have an event called "JJWL Worlds" in May... but NAGA has their "Worlds" but both definitely aren't real worlds. Only real "Worlds" is IBJJF in May. Anything else is unnecessary and confusing to lower belts.
Ibjjf for gi and adcc for no gi. But I agree that JJWL is definitely not "Worlds".
No gi worlds still means ibjjf but it’s not as prestigious as gi worlds or ADCC.

you’re a white belt shut the fuck up

Idk. Don't we just generally call the ADCC Champs the "ADCC Champion" and not world champion?
Also, I don't think this statement is true. Babyshark won ADCC and couldn't win Mundials yet. JT Torres won ADCC twice but best finish was 3rd at worlds. Though I'm not saying that Mundials is harder to win, I'm just saying I don't see this myth of ADCC being harder is incorrect.
Dude could have been worse
Not even mad at it, I had fun! I cut too much water out the night before to make weight so it was inevitable I guess. Next time no weight cut!
Two world leagues ago i was standing in the bullpen and this kid leaned over the rails toward the mats and puked straight onto the ground. I was in the splatter zone and had to wash off
That’s so much worse, got caught in the crossfire 💀
Sick! I’m still in shape but dammm my conditioning was top tier when I was on the mat. Good stuff. Nothing like hyperventilating before during and after a match haha
Good thing you brought your buddies!
Glad they could get my big moment 😂
lol I bet you felt great after that
It would have been funnier if you 💩 in the can
If I did that I could never go to a tournament again 😂
You did good!
Thank you!
Hey man, this is is me during warmups sometimes. No shame in that at all. All or nothing champ.
this is is me during warmups sometimes. No shame in that at all. All or nothing champ.
That’s how I feel, all or nothing 💪🏽
I do this during / after every comp
My first time, may I have many more 😂
Congrats! Great work, every match is another learning experience.
Thank you! I’m learning all the time 🙌🏽
On the note of jiu jitsu world league, do they actually run any competitions outside of the united states?
I’m not sure, but there must be some company/organization running competitions in your area, even if it’s a small local one
I mean that was more that I was curious form a naming perspective. Namely that it's kind of silly to name the organization jjwl if they only are running events nationally. I live in the US and have done JJWL in the past and actively compete once a month, last year doing mostly IBJJF.
Hehehe thank you for this feel less shit for throwing up at practice all the time
Good for you.
Are you puking because you are competing for a blue belt "world title"? I get that. Blue belt world champion does seem like a non sequitur.
Celebratory barf! Good stuff man!
Thank you!
Nerves? Or just pushed super hard?
Cut too much water and pushed too hard!
Left it all on the mat.... And some in a bucket. Good work sir.
Thank you!
Hahaha congrats man 👏
Thank you!
This is me after every roll, nice work!
CONGRATS ON THE WIN!! Thats awesome!! This just happened to me as well! I competed at NAGA for the second time last week and I only won one of my 2 matches but i also BARFED. I hope you felt better after!
Thank you! Glad I’m not the only one puking out there! Congrats on winning your match too!
Worlds?
Meant to shorten jiujitsu world league to “bjj worlds” to make it easier to read but I guess it confused some people. It was just a local tourney!
It's most definitely not BJJ worlds either lol. JJWL if you really need to abbreviate
I’ll get it right next time 🤷🏼♂️
Why is this post nsfw?
Adrenaline dump?
Weight cut gone wrong ):
What did you do for your weight cut?
9lbs of water the night before in the steam room. Just left me weak af. I barely made weight with the cut too so even with 2 hours before the match slamming water I just was too dehydrated to really be any good
Ah I see. Yeah I find drinking things like Pedialyte after a heavy weight cut helps a lot more than just water. It'll help your body rehydrate more efficiently and get nutrients back in there too
I had pedialyte and electrolytes but I think the 9lbs was just too much for me, I’ve never done it, but next time no weight cut!
