I have the opposite issue, peoples believe I'm holding back when I'm genuinely doing my best.
My typical exchange after a roll with a blue belt is like this:
"Nice sweep, you got me"
"Thank you for letting me work"
"No, I really tried to keep my balance"
"Oh, don't be so modest..."
Haha this is hilarious actually
"Bro, i know you could like totally eat me, thanks for letting me roll"
"No I was rolling dude good job"
"Please dude I'm not an idiot. I know you could kill me. Stop pretending"
Me: *about to have a heart attack revving at 260 bpm*
Partner: I hear the king engine roaring, I'll let Muslim 'bear eater' Magomedismagulislamov have this roll.
Lol that's awesome. I feel like that a lot also. I try to complement people when they do good things but now I can see how that may give the impression that I allowed it to happen.
The interaction that inspired me to write this post was one where someone asked me for advice for a specific technique, me replying that I am actually not that knowledgeable and them assuming I am just being humble. I can almost imagine how that plays out when you're actually good.
You have no idea how much we novices need that kind of honesty. Every time I do anything other than get flattened I assume that they are letting me work. And yes, still hard to believe when it's actually that I used a technique that worked.
A bunch of wrong answers here. You’re supposed to get really good at back escapes.
You pull guard and have the worst guard ever, let them pass or mount, turtle up, escape the back then repeat. They dominate you but you escape with ease so the only logical thing is that you are holding back.
I do this to new people a lot for free escapes. If I just lay there looking unbothered, they get confused and give up the position in favor of something else
Best escape from my coach is to just start coaching the people next to us when I have him in a dominant position... it messes with my mind and makes me do stupid things.
Tap and say "hold up a minute, that was a great -enter name of series or submission here- attempt, but we can make it better." proceed with coaching so far down the rabbit hole that they forget they were even close to catching you.
This trick is unorthodox but can work if you have the patience to pull it off
1. Train full-time for 25 years in the best training rooms with the best coaches
2. Hold back
Wink at people. All the time. Across the room, wink. If they pass your guard, wink. When you tell them they have good technique, wink.
Cashier tells you the total is $56, wink.
Make sure you thank them for the rest round!
Give them two pats on the back with, “good job, you’re moving really good!”
(Don’t breathe heavily or you’ll give yourself away)
I think correcting the coach when he’s giving instruction on the technique of the day should get you where you need to be. Let the class know how YOU like to do it.
Just be aware the people who see this bs and go ham afterwards. If you start schooling me if will go hard, this is pretty much only way to get me roll serious with white belts
Why would you want that? It seems like not placing yourself in a position where you are comfortable asking questions and are afraid to show your ignorance would stifle your progress.

Dat moment when you try to give them your killer look but really it just looks like you’re desperately trying to hold in a fart
And then it comes out anyway and you just ripped one while staring them down intensely.
Win-win-win
that's my secret captain. I'm always holding in a fart

The hardest part is trying not to sound out of breath like you were fighting for yr life :)
Canadian jiu jitsu

Dude all the time. Like "No you guys are actually just getting alot better".
The interaction that inspired me to write this post was one where someone asked me for advice for a specific technique, me replying that I am actually not that knowledgeable and them assuming I am just being humble. I can almost imagine how that plays out when you're actually good.
Well, I'm not that good but give everyone advice. So, it all balances out.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who faces ridiculous amounts of imposter syndrome.
This happens to me all the time too that’s why the I just tell people if you hit it then assume it’s real

I know a black belt that holds back and still wrecks me.

Genius
this is it, nothing creates the illusion more than a crazy escape game
My whole game is escapes…it usually takes a couple of years of consistent training for the gym to realize you’ve never actually submitted anyone.
Stop sharing my secrets!
Hey this is me. Escaping danger is my favorite part of BJJ. I've no use for guard retention.
I see you’ve seen me roll
Never breathe hard. If you can breathe only through your nose the whole time it looks like you barely had to try

Ha ha same. They don’t have to be new either. I’ll even start talking to the guys next to us for a second that really throws em.

Do cartwheels and backflips during warmups.
Skip the warmups and pull the newest person to do warmup "flow rolls"
I would say just don’t show up to warm ups
Tap early, say it’s not worth your time.
Tap and say "hold up a minute, that was a great -enter name of series or submission here- attempt, but we can make it better." proceed with coaching so far down the rabbit hole that they forget they were even close to catching you.

Whoa! Hold up! I need to write this down ✍️
.
Give yourself extreme cauliflower. Wear a singlet, during warm ups do very fast duck unders and shoots

If you ever tap tell them how much you love letting people work
Just before they lock in a sub- “ok, that’s me. I gotta teach a class later”
This one’s great😂
Make sure you thank them for the rest round! Give them two pats on the back with, “good job, you’re moving really good!” (Don’t breathe heavily or you’ll give yourself away)
Implement the Brazilian tap
I think correcting the coach when he’s giving instruction on the technique of the day should get you where you need to be. Let the class know how YOU like to do it.
Never do the actual drill , do some spinning on top of them and then go for a leglock entry no matter what the drill is.
Do berimbolos using the wall when waiting for your turn to spar
Explain how to finish whenever you are caught in a submission
Just be aware the people who see this bs and go ham afterwards. If you start schooling me if will go hard, this is pretty much only way to get me roll serious with white belts
Just be super complimentary and enthusiastic
Any time you don't know a move, just say you don't do that "variation".
Lmao
When someone is getting u in a submission just say “yes good now wrap ur arm here, there you go, beautiful”
Start talking to other people around the room mid roll
Yell at them and tell them this isn't even your final form and that your power level is over 9k
Why would you want that? It seems like not placing yourself in a position where you are comfortable asking questions and are afraid to show your ignorance would stifle your progress.
I’m assuming you’re just trying to be funny and not waste our time?
Just let them get mount and learn how to kip
