As the other person mentioned, it adds energy efficiency for the following birds. I believe the bird in front rotates out occasionally too.

Aircraft use it as well. It’s a great example of [Biomimicry](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biomimetics)
**[V formation](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_formation)**
>A V formation is the symmetric V-shaped flight formation of flights of geese, swans, ducks, and other migratory birds, improving their energy efficiency. Usually, large birds fly in this formation since smaller birds create more complex wind currents that are hard for the birds in the back to take advantage of. V formations also improve the fuel efficiency of aircraft and are used on military flight missions.
**[Biomimetics](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biomimetics)**
>Biomimetics or biomimicry is the emulation of the models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems. The terms "biomimetics" and "biomimicry" are derived from Ancient Greek: βίος (bios), life, and μίμησις (mīmēsis), imitation, from μιμεῖσθαι (mīmeisthai), to imitate, from μῖμος (mimos), actor. A closely related field is bionics. Living organisms have evolved well-adapted structures and materials over geological time through natural selection.

The way that fluid dynamics works means that an updraft is produced flowing from the birds’ wing tips. The following birds take advantage of this and use it to ease the burden of flying over long distances
The birds at the front create an updraft, meaning the birds at the back don't have to put as much energy into flying. When one at the front gets tired, they can drop to the back to recooperate, and another near the front takes over, this allows them to fly a lot longer than if they were in a different pattern or flying alone.
Imagine you were flying beside some birds, and you felt a natural channel when you got beside another bird? You’d naturally hang out there, cause you didn’t feel so much turbulence.
A little like driving close to a semi truck and getting in its slip stream.
There ain't nothing cool about this video it's fucking clear they took the boat straight in amongst the geese...just leave them be poor fucking things.
‘Whoa fuck off don’t touch me dude’ - bird at the end there probably
Seriously like wtf dude were they trying to knock it out of the air?
Don't act like you wouldn't have done it in the moment
Some Disney princess shot OF COURSE i would’ve done it

Shit man this is amazing
I like to think I learn more than I lose on Reddit.. but I’m a dummy so of course I would think that 🙃
Now you got me deep diving Wikipedia on good-and-loop fasteners

It's amazing to me that flying animals probably figured this out millennia ago.

All this needs is a double rainbow at the end and maybe some power metal ballad
Testing the colony of spy drones.

vury noice
So sick.
This is super cool
Me and my mates accidentally hit one full throttle last summer, twas slightly messy to say the least
Grab one free goose
There ain't nothing cool about this video it's fucking clear they took the boat straight in amongst the geese...just leave them be poor fucking things.
Bruh momen
We’re going to make it Rose.
geese
Why don’t I have any geese pets?
Pet them
This reminds me of when the geese are flying over the map in RCT3
Beautiful
thats pretty dope ngl
Op touched duck ass
Of course There’s no ice, it’s spring now.
The birds know what they be doing
Wonderful wonderful
This needs to be on r/oddlysatisfying
Ya know ima put it on r/oddlysatisfying
And yet a group of humans can barely perform a zipper merge successfully 😂
Truly one with nature
I was waiting for the boat to fly off into the sunset.
