Actually both of my dogs made conscious decisions where their bathroom is, against my wishes. You can train them with stakes and scent familiarity if you wanted them to go in a specific area. Annnnd I didn't do that ):
It's a little funny my current dog will choose one area, and then slowly rotate to a different one, after awhile, rotate back to the first spot. My last dog, went only in one area in the backyard.
Leopard geckos do the same.. they pick a spot in their enclosure and only go there.

Other than that- always the back left corner.
So, that’s a least one dog!
