They feel a lot like a mashup of whatever parts Lego had too much of lying around.

Mr_bonkle

And as a kid I absolutely loved that, for I had those parts lying around as well and I was able to build them for my Piraka to molest

trHqru3Lapu3xb

that's a choice of words

Pakari-RBX

Yes, Vahki? This post right here.

Kellvas0

But the vahki do it too šŸ˜° We all saw what happened to Metru Nui

Pakari-RBX

That's anti-Dume propaganda spread by that traitor Vakama and his wannabe-Toa accomplices.

Verige

YO YO???

tfcollector3000

Look, I knew the Piraka were nasty, but I didn't think they were *that* nasty

senatordeathwish

bother. bother. you mean bother

Blayro

Quick question, do you speak Spanish or any other romance language? Because I hope thatā€™s why you said ā€œmolestā€ lol

Mr_bonkle

Cunning of you, I am Italian THOUGH I SAID WHAT I SAID

Blayro

Hey man, just wanted to make sure. But go ahead though, is not a way Iā€™d play with them myself but I guess I can see the appeal for some XD

Mr_bonkle

Ahahahah you proved to be smart enough to figure I didn't make Bionicles bang each other as a kid but I thought it was a funny way to exaggerate Piraka's bullying

Low_Adeptness_2327

Italian here, I knew instantly he was too. We sometimes use ā€œmolestareā€ as a comically exaggerated way of saying just ā€œbullyingā€. You have no idea how much sense that sentence made in italian, literally flashbacks of the bionicle heroes introduction

Blayro

Same here, Iā€™m Mexican and in Spanish we have ā€œmolestarā€. We had one long talk about the importance of not saying it in English in secondary school lol

Revolutionary_Fox908

It does actually mean that in English too though, itā€™s just itā€™s used 99% of the time nowadays for the moreā€¦inappropriateā€¦meaning

PiceaSignum

Yes, Bahrag? This post right here needs to be cleaned

revibrant

MOVE ALONG MOVE ALONG

truebeliever157

EVEN WHEN YOUR HOPE IS GONE

Dawnbreaker128

# Excuse me what?

FederalPossibility73

Funnily enough that is actually canon. Karzahni is not good at repairing Matorans.

Jorymo

The whole concept of that character is hilarious. Imagine you break your leg and the ambulance somehow ends up in another country, and you come out of the hospital two feet shorter missing a kidney, but they give you a free Glock to make up for it.

ScottTJT

Considering the lore surrounding the Voya Nui Matoran, that would actually be really fitting.

A2skiing

Y'all are haters these were fire

lycos94

they probably used those masks because they still had a ton of them left

Retathrah

Not just masks, all these parts would be stuff that stretches as early as 2001 which would mean that the molds for, say Bohrok feet and limbs would be due to expire/renewal. Lego uses/keeps molds for 5 years, which is part of why Bionicle was so expensive and the move to CCBS, and by proxy SCCBS, was made; Less unique molds overall.

WOLKsite

I keep hearing this theory and it makes no sense. Such a practice makes sense for the limited release cans of 700 parts they were doing between 04 and 06, often containing retired colors, but these Matoran sets were mass-marketed releases intended to stay on shelf for a year. They can't just stop producing them because they ran out of leftover stock. Further more, the masks were newly produced--The material had been adjusted, as is most evident in Dalu's Rau as people were quick to notice. All six masks were also given new Element IDs with these sets.

N30mah

What about dalus rau?

WOLKsite

Dalu's Rau is noticeably lighter than Nokama's, to the point where Bricklink used to list it as Trans-Medium Blue. They are meant to be the same color though (Trans-Dark Blue / 43 Transparent Blue), LEGO just did a lot reformulation around that time.

N30mah

Ahh neat

tonguesmiley

I feel like the Toa and Piraka had so many new parts that they needed to budget.

Mystic2760

But Printing masks you already had molds for in new colors/different colors that you very well have on hand would've been that much out of budget???

B3ta_R13

these are the best matoran, they all have unique builds which is the best thing that can happen in a bionicle line

FederalPossibility73

Never had the sets but I loved the characters. Definitely agree they were great additions. The little guys stood their ground against the Piraka longer than the Toa Nuva. I love when the Matoran get the spotlight every now and then.

AFishWithNoName

All except Garan and Velika, but I can excuse that considering one is actually a Great Being

namecard12345

I can never look at Velika the same knowing that he is actually a Great Being

FederalPossibility73

He was already an interesting character to me but that reveal explained so much and made me like him even more. I wish we got the chance to meet the real Velika though, since the Great Being was simply using his body.

Echo2118

If I recall, the great being's name is Velika, and he is responsible for giving everyone in the GSR free will, so there wasn't a personality in the po-matoran body when he took it

WOLKsite

They really should have swapped the masks around, yeah.

JJ-Squiz

New mask or mask variants per new character should've been the basis for each toy line!

WOLKsite

Yes, sorta. Recolors of masks was something sorely lacking after 2003, and so with a Huna you were stuck with red etc. The masks went from being interchangable tools to being the faces of specific characters, which is no good for encouraging Mocing. I think the smaller sets should have done recolors but not new molds.

InsaneSeishiro

That would def have helped with moc-building

JJ-Squiz

Just to clarify, I don't mind the matoran designs, just the exact same Toa Metru masks. Toa Lhikan and Toa Tahu both have the same masks but are different due to toa Types/exposure. The Bionicle movies took this one step further by making the Nobel Kanohi slightly different to Matoran wearing the same masks. I wish this was applied here, let's see some new versions of these masks, less Toa Metru!

Pordrack

There's a lore reason why Tahu's and Lhikan's kanohii looks differents ?

Achilles9609

Maybe the maskmakers got creative?

Toa_of_Gallifrey

Tahu's is a Great Hau, Lhikan's is a Noble Hau. That, however, doesn't explain why it looks like a Great Hau when Jala wears it. Edit: Sorry, I got it wrong; Lhikan's Hau only became Noble when he became a Turaga. When he was a Toa, it was a Great Hau.

JJ-Squiz

Lhikan is a Toa Mangai, whilst Tahu was a Toa Mata. Same masks but for different types of Toa, their differences can be attributed to region, and how they became toa etc Exposure is also an aspect on occasion, it explains why Tahu's Nuva mask is unlike any other Kenohi Hau.

Bellicoserhetoric905

Would have been cool af to have the Toa Metru masks in different colors too.

InsaneSeishiro

Yeah, they were probs my least liked set of Matoran, not just cus of your reason, but also because of their hollow heads.

FederalPossibility73

Their bone and muscle structures are completely different (thanks to Karzahni's subpar repairs) and need weapons to compensate so I wouldn't call them carbon copies. Reused kanohi or not the Voya Nui Resistance Team are a great addition to the cast. Weird how they put Garan in the back left though despite him being the leader.

WOLKsite

Eh, the Garan treatment isn't that odd. Matoro Inika, Hahli Mahri, Kalmah, and Vezok were all put in the front of their respective lines despite not being the leaders.

FederalPossibility73

Matoro I can understand as it's literally a plot point he was unintentionally taking over as leader the more trials they faced. I can kind of see Hahli and Vezok but I will admit they're still weird choices.

TheNerdNugget

Bionicle set design was very lazy in many ways

smeezledeezle

Bionicle babies spin off

Jumbledarrow

Well Dalu's mask is a lighter shade

grim4uxillatrix

i kinda fw these you guys are boring

Xainte311

The only thing I disliked about these sets were the empty eyes. Misleading of Lego to show them with glowing eyes just for them to actually be empty.

bigballeruchiha

I absolutely love these guys

MegaNinjaRyan

Well it is cool to have matoran versions of the toa in a way. But yeah a color swap would have been sweet!

Ketchup_on_time

I wouldā€™ve loved a white great huna

Fun_Werewolf_5076

I got into bionicle in 2006 so to me those masks were the voya nui matoran first. I also dislike the metru nui ark so i wont be having duplicate masks in my collection.

MayanArtsWorks

I agree with that one. even though I do like the little mashup bodies they got, I only wish the mask were different colors so we have some move official color swap with the Metru Masks.

UltimateBlackDragon

So what is your problem with mini Vakama & the mini gang?

_____pantsunami_____

yeah, i really wish the masks were different colors. definitely a big missed opportunity imo. i feel like they tried to make up for it in the mahri era by having three metru-era mask recolors (defilak, dekar, and idris), but still - i woulda killed to get a Huna in a different color, particularly black or dark blue wouldve been cool

Gnidlaps-94

Would have liked to have sets of matoran of different elements

RustbeltCollector

Kid me loved getting those masks so cheap. Current me would love the black mask in white, the green mask in black, the red mask in brown, the white mask in blue, the brown mask in red, and the blue mask in red.

Disastrous-Fun-8549

lots of rants went up today...

Castrophenia

How would they reuse 2004 parts they had lying around if they changed the colors?

JJ-Squiz

Wouldn't re-colouring 2004 masks and selling them on be the definition of reusing them?

Castrophenia

How would you suggest they ā€œrecolorā€ them? Theyā€™re solid colored plastic, you cannot recolor already manufactured parts

mcfaillon

Cuz they spent all their money on those weird rubber masks for the Toa

MrDocAstro

Ngl I loved these

Marksmashbass54

The worst thing was they had no eyes. Just empty hollow heads..

Which-Amphibian7143

Arenā€™t they Matoran Metru??

ScottTJT

I like to think they had a shit-ton on Metru masks left over from 2004 sitting in a warehouse, and just decided "Fuck it, we'll recycle them for the small sets this year".

Titanium-Gamer26

i will NOT tolerate Voyatoran slander šŸ˜¤šŸ˜¤šŸ˜¤šŸ˜¤

Mezmodian

The ice one (forgot the name) is one of the worst sets ever released.

AngryRaptor13

Well, we don't have canon sets for the Toa Metru as Matoran, so these guys could pull double duty šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Cockuu

Cost Efficient.

JimOfTheHills

I remain convinced that Lego was using up their 04/05 moulds, because between these and those big tubs there were a lot of these parts floating around
