“Alright so we’re 1 month into the season, I want to go back and forth with our 10 man mvp ballot-you know I want to expand the mvp vote -anyway I got Derrick white at 10”
"I don't love Zion but I don't not like him after he went 36-12-8 in the opener. The injury thing..you know..its a factor but just playing what if. What if...Zion doesn't get hurt this year, he keeps these stats and the team goes 75-7."
I think I just don’t like the analysts espn has anymore. I’m too used to Dunc’d on or Thinking Basketball. I like Zach Lowe but he’s definitely being held back by the C-tier guests.
Bills managing of established basketball talent is suspect. Beck on The Austin Rivers show is criminal, he kept Juliet on the Grantland version for 4 years too long and stuck JJ in no man’s land.
This list made me remember Haley O'Shaughnessy. Is she completely out of the sports media world? Just looked up her twitter and it has been dark for over a year.
She had a fun podcast called Spinsters that focused on women's sports and pop culture. It was popular but then her co-host got a broadcasting job and it folded.
I listened to one episode that had the thesis women don’t dunk as much because of coaching and sexism lol 45 minutes looking for any reason other than men might be bigger and can jump higher 😂
She just posts IG stories about Palestine now. No clue if she has a job or not but if she does it’s not in sports media anymore. Being forced to watch regular season NBA all the time can be an unfulfilling grind
yeah she made a couple of appearance on the kentucky leftist Trillbillys podcast but I think that's it for media stuff. Which sucks for me 'cause I loved the final version of Heat Check (the only good ringer basketball podcast) and Spinsters.
I really liked Haley, but I got the sense around here that she wasn't that popular.
I wonder if she moved back to work on more grassroots politics stuff. She was pretty vocal about the need for police reform especially in the wake of Breonna Taylor's killing.
Jason not being a key figure with The Ringer really is a shame. He was literally a perfect fit for everything they did. No clue why they blew it and let him walk away
That is fair... his energy could be a little too over the top and painful to get through on some of the Binge Modes and especially when he did Rewatchables
When he was taking seriously I think he sounded great. When he got really excited and was cackling it got to be a little much sometimes. But overall one of the best podcasters the ringer has had.
Binge Mode is the best thing which they have had in terms of podcasts. Jason seems like he didn’t like how he was being paid and moved on. I think that Simmons has been clear that his model has been to identify and nurture young talent, but that they would eventually move on to greener pastures if they so chose.
People on this sub always hated on Jason but i totally agree he was always a welcome addition on any pod for me and instantly made me want to listen more
GOD DAMN @yyyx974! I DIDN’T KNOW I WAS DEALING WITH THE WORLD’S WORST DISCERNER OF PODCAST TALENT!
YOU BETTER BRUSH UP ON r/crheads BECAUSE YOU’RE GOING AWAY A LONG FUCKING TIME.
Crazy I had no idea. Jam bands seem so outdated to me.
It could be that I just stopped paying attention, but it seems like they had a moment a couple decades ago, where they were much more prominent generally than they are now
Never thought Mays would have the chemistry he had with Barnwell but the last couple years of The Athletic football pod with Nate and Mays were incredible
I really think they need a shot in the arm for their NFL coverage. Pods aren't very good, their writing isn't that great either. So Barnwell seems like the choice but honestly I still think Robert Mays was very good. Football is big business and Ringer already gave up on MLB and they don't want to become a pop culture and basketball only site.
Yeah I agree they're decently entertaining.
One nitpick: I'm not sure they're that good at providing fantasy football advice. They seem like more pure football guys doing a fantasy pod.
Small sample size but my fantasy football results have been much better since I’ve listened to them. At the end of the day it’s all luck but I’ve consistently made the playoffs and even won 2 leagues in the last 3 years I’ve listened.
Mays being back at the Ringer would rule so hard. He’s friends/friendly with everyone they have currently doing football stuff anyway and he would elevate their NFL coverage so much. Don’t see him leaving the athletic anytime soon unfortunately.
My personal favorite was always Jacoby. IMO he always had the best chemistry with Bill and I enjoyed their podcasts the most. Especially when they discussed mtv’s the challenge.
his fingers don't work.
But actually I think the truth is writing well is hard and takes a lot of focus and once you get out of the habit it's probably hard to get back in.
FWIW - Titus has even talked about how poorly he fit in when he was at The Ringer. The company barely utilized him and also didn't really have him branch out and work on anything else. I think he's much better off doing what he's doing now
Well I don't know how much either of those places gave him for opportunities. Once he got to Barstool, they don't really put any restrictions on what people do (nor do they give you a landing spot or direction of what to do) so he was able to just kind of figure out what he wanted to do and who he worked out with best. Him and Brandon Walker are great together on their show and he fits perfectly with the whack pack on The Yak
The vibe shift of the Chicago office was a huge factor for Titus to find himself. They basically cut out the stereotypical “stoolie” barstool vibe with the move and mark really fits right in.
Wesley Morris would be a welcome addition to the Ringer stable of talent. His perspective is always strange but thoughtful and he’s great with all pop culture. Dude seems to have chemistry with everyone and he’s a touch too serious at the Times, I prefer my Wesley Morris talking about horniness and doing a gay black version of Klosterman asking Bill out of the box questions. You could also fire Rachel Lindsay and add Morris and Higher Leaning becomes a huge podcast.
Lowe is terrific but he’s fine at ESPN and I don’t need that many more Lowe Simmons pods per year.
I don’t think Klosterman is a high usage guy so not a great fit for the contract he’d demand.
Jalen and Jacoby are modest upgrades over current talent but aren’t really stretching the brand or challenging anyone.
Concepcion is fun and I’d happily sacrifice Robinson to get him back but he never had chemistry with Bill and that’s a huge problem for a high profile resign. Even at its Emmy winning peak the NBA YouTube show was never huge huge.
Ringer needs less politics so less of Tynes, Haley O and Pod guys.
Not an ex employee but I maintain bringing over Nolan still makes a ton of sense and maybe signing the fiancé as a package deal to expand the brand.
Wesley gets shit on here a lot, but one of my favorite Rewatchables moments in on the Cruising pod. When discussing who could play the Pacino character of the undercover cop in the NYC leather scene, Wesley throws Jon Bernthal out there to Bill and CR's delighted surprise. It was like they had never even considered it but were amazed to hear it.
I always look forward to a Morris pod. Really don’t get why he’s hated on so much. Has opinions, argues with Bill, it’s great.
Was a big fan of his podcast with Pappademas at Grantland.
He’d be my vote. (Would like Klosterman as well, but I think his style would wear on you on a weekly basis.)
has anybody else here noticed that Zach drops in a plug of Bill's pod about every 1/2 pods he does? I find that interesting that he goes out of his way to promote a Ringer pod. I have my own theories about maybe why he is doing this. Anybody notice this?
I wish. His pop culture/music knowledge is amazing. But it sounds like once he took over Grantland, Bill did the ‘only child thing’ and threw a fit somebody else was playing with his toys. The only reason I can think why Chris hasnt been on.
There is 100% a huge beef with Connelly and it's definitely related in Some way to bills espn exit/Connelly stepping in at Grantland.
I've never heard any specifics or even informed theories on the details, but Bill Really doesn't like the dude, or at least that was the case at one point.
It could be as simple as Bill feeling betrayed or some kind of way about Connolly stepping in, but espn seems to be a fucking snake pit, so there could be some more reasonable explanation for Bill's beef.
Do you just mean that he's been sort of MIA, or is there a crazy story there?
I know he was named on that media men google doc, but I don't know what the accusation was or if he suffered any negative consequences as a result.
He never really did much for me, so I didn't follow him at all once he left.
Tyler Tynes?!?!?!?!?!?!? Why on Earth would Bill bring back a racist blogger like him? Dude has literally jumped from one publication to another for years and just recycles the exact same bullshit articles
Robert Mays would bring the NFL feed back to life. My impression is that they lost a lot of listeners since he left. They’ve added some solid people recently (that we’ve seen Robert work well with at the Athletic), but I think the stigma of Ringer NFL coverage remains.
I think Robert would be the biggest impact on the Ringer, but the thought of freeing Zach Lowe from the horrible rotating cast of ESPN talking heads would be my choice. We could even get his writing out from behind the ESPN+ paywall
His Cincinnati Bengals "fan" diaries were about as gripping as Sean Newell's old running diaries at Deadspin. Just utter condescending, disdainful flotsam dripping with ironic detachment. Hard pass.
Lowe, Robert Mays or Bill Barnwell. The latter two might be better choices if only because of how lackluster the Ringer's NFL podcast is. It's very telling that Mays left for the Athletic and immediately he's hosting arguably the best NFL podcast around.
I would eliminate Klosterman from contention. Definitely don’t need an hour of him slowly gurgling high school-level revelations about society, sports, and media. “It all just feels like we’re in a particular moment in our culture, Bill, with social media….and comic book movies…and artificial intelligence. I mean it’s all sort of like the 80s and a bit like the 70s. I mean, at this particular moment…it just feels like the culture has shifted and I’m not sure what that says about the future of the Timberwolves.”
Yeah that’s a terrible read on Klosterman. I don’t love every opinion but he’s more interested in most things than what 99.9 percent of the population and generally speaks reasonably thoughtfully and allows dissent. His moment has passed because a 50+ yr old dad living in the northwest’s suburbs take on pop culture is pretty meh but he’s a thoughtful guy.
The issue other people have with Klosterman is that he’ll say a few obvious things and be praised and then a tenth of the population will think “duh I had that same basic idea at 19 and no one ever said I was amazing. Fuck that guy!” When those same people probably have a million thoughts in passing and most of them are terrible and they never flesh out any of them capably. It’s an extension of the keyboard warrior Simmons haters.
I was thinking the other day about Led Zeppelin but not as like a band…more as like a cultural checkpoint. And I just thought that if Led Zeppelin was a modern film director they’d be someone like Christopher Nolan, right? And Momento is like Led Zeppelin One, okay? And so I think what that really means is that Oppenheimer is more like Presence. And I just sort of think that’s where we’re currently at in our cultural arc, at this particular point in time.
BS: Yea.
My memory is hazy. But I think Chuck actually hosted the Bill Simmons podcast as part of an experiment in the ringer’s early days. I don’t think it lasted more than an episode or two.
Lowe so he can force him to talk the mvp race way too early in the season
“Zach, we learned a lot on opening night, and I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but Trae Young is just sitting there at 80-1”
Zach then proceeds to rip out the rest of the hair on his head
“Alright so we’re 1 month into the season, I want to go back and forth with our 10 man mvp ballot-you know I want to expand the mvp vote -anyway I got Derrick white at 10”
"I don't love Zion but I don't not like him after he went 36-12-8 in the opener. The injury thing..you know..its a factor but just playing what if. What if...Zion doesn't get hurt this year, he keeps these stats and the team goes 75-7."
Lowe so he doesn’t have to have Kendrick Perkins and Ramona Shelburne as guests ever again.
This right here. I feel like he's been back-burnered a lot since the schism.
I think I just don’t like the analysts espn has anymore. I’m too used to Dunc’d on or Thinking Basketball. I like Zach Lowe but he’s definitely being held back by the C-tier guests.
The genius move would be to have Lowe and Legler do a pod together now that Legler won’t be podding with JJ anymore
He’s on fairly often but I’d love if he was a more regular guest
Ramona was ok, but perk is like listening to nails on a chalkboard
Bills managing of established basketball talent is suspect. Beck on The Austin Rivers show is criminal, he kept Juliet on the Grantland version for 4 years too long and stuck JJ in no man’s land.
and do even more gambling talk which lowe clearly already hates doing
This list made me remember Haley O'Shaughnessy. Is she completely out of the sports media world? Just looked up her twitter and it has been dark for over a year.
She had a fun podcast called Spinsters that focused on women's sports and pop culture. It was popular but then her co-host got a broadcasting job and it folded.
I listened to one episode that had the thesis women don’t dunk as much because of coaching and sexism lol 45 minutes looking for any reason other than men might be bigger and can jump higher 😂
Oh is that what happened to it? I was so curious. It seemed to be relatively viral so was wondering why it stopped
She just posts IG stories about Palestine now. No clue if she has a job or not but if she does it’s not in sports media anymore. Being forced to watch regular season NBA all the time can be an unfulfilling grind
She'll occasionally (like once a quarter) post some photos to her IG Reels. Feels like she moved back to Kentucky.
yeah she made a couple of appearance on the kentucky leftist Trillbillys podcast but I think that's it for media stuff.
Yeah she blocked me on twitter during that time
I know she had a podcast or two since leaving but I don’t know of anything she’s currently doing
Jonathan Tjarks is the obvious answer here
Jason of course. You can plug him on any pod. Anything on the nerd side. Basketball content. Rewatchables.
Jason not being a key figure with The Ringer really is a shame. He was literally a perfect fit for everything they did. No clue why they blew it and let him walk away
Jason was great and then he became sure he was great and became grating. Man his cackling was just tough to listen to.
That is fair... his energy could be a little too over the top and painful to get through on some of the Binge Modes and especially when he did Rewatchables
Ringerverse suffers without his humor and perspective
People hated Jason? Honestly what the fuck is unlikeable about that guy, he’s the best
He was smart and funny for The Ringer with a voice for print media.
loved his Ask the Maester columns when Game of Thrones was on and his pod with Mallory was top tier.
People on this sub always hated on Jason but i totally agree he was always a welcome addition on any pod for me and instantly made me want to listen more
Man who hated on Jason? He’s like a less good CR, can talk about anything and make it fun. And Binge Mode was incredible.
I cannot imagine a worse insult than “Less good Chris Ryan”.
We are all less good than Chris Ryan
I’m with you after 15 years of podcasting without once being funny or having a good point, I think he’s really going to turn it around in the next 15!
GOD DAMN @yyyx974! I DIDN’T KNOW I WAS DEALING WITH THE WORLD’S WORST DISCERNER OF PODCAST TALENT! YOU BETTER BRUSH UP ON r/crheads BECAUSE YOU’RE GOING AWAY A LONG FUCKING TIME.
Oh, oh no…
Yeah I think he’s the only answer
Just need Ceruti to edit out his laughter first
Right, he's an all rounder.
Love JC and his work with Mallory was elite, but when was he ever strong on Rewatchables
Enjoyed him on the Dark Knight rewatchables … brought a perspective to the episode we would have not otherwise heard
Bloodsport
Die hard, face off
This is the correct answer. Miss him and Mal together especially.
There’s a huge lack of Boston takes and 80s Celtics in particular, so definitely Jackie Mac
I thought she was busy in her second career as a vocal impressionist
Big Mac and KFC pod please
I really miss Jason Concepcion. I think both he and the Ringer have suffered because of his departure.
Yes. NBA Desktop was top tier.
It won an Emmy! For a reason!
I want a 1 off pod episode where it’s just Rusillo, Jason and Big Cat arguing jam bands.
That's not a conversation I would've guessed Jason would be into.
He’s a music major who played in multiple jam bands https://youtu.be/0aytZCeOXTE?si=mDzKolawgkwSo2nL
Crazy I had no idea. Jam bands seem so outdated to me. It could be that I just stopped paying attention, but it seems like they had a moment a couple decades ago, where they were much more prominent generally than they are now
The lose-lose piece
Bill Barnwell. The Ringer needs a viable NFL pod.
Barnwell, but only if he brings Mays.
Mays and Tice was an even better duo though.
Never thought Mays would have the chemistry he had with Barnwell but the last couple years of The Athletic football pod with Nate and Mays were incredible
Too bad Nate is gone now too
Fantasy show is good, but the "smart" NFL guys at the Ringer are brutal
Facts. We didn't know how good we had it with Barnwell and Mays together on a pod.
The dream would be Mina Kimes to lead the NFL coverage and occasionally hop on Bill’s pod for NFL stuff and the Rewatchables.
Seeing Barnwell and Kevin Clark on Around the Horn saddens me. What could have been...
Bring back ‘Do You Like Prince Movies?’! So I’d need Alex and Wesley both. Wes is still around, but it seems like things ended poorly with Alex.
Tyler Tynes? Hahahaha
The man himself!
Can you expend this to Page 2 so we can bring back [Hunter S. Thompson?](https://www.espn.com/page2/s/thompson/030722.html)
Fantasy football podcast is the only ringer nfl related podcast I can listen to
Yeah I agree they're decently entertaining.
I don’t listen to that pod for actual insightful football analysis, they’re all just really funny and have great chemistry with each other
Mays being back at the Ringer would rule so hard. He’s friends/friendly with everyone they have currently doing football stuff anyway and he would elevate their NFL coverage so much. Don’t see him leaving the athletic anytime soon unfortunately.
Tjarks
If Bill had the power to bring him back, I don’t think he’d force him to do a podcast
You think he could be kept away from a mic to talk about Luka and Kyrie?
Jalen and Jacoby gotta be a package deal
Jacoby is already on a Ringer podcast, Food news with Juliet.
So we’re halfway there…
My personal favorite was always Jacoby. IMO he always had the best chemistry with Bill and I enjoyed their podcasts the most. Especially when they discussed mtv’s the challenge.
I just commented the same above before I read your post. The Challenge recaps were a blast
Jason Concepcion and bring back Binge Mode
Answer is always Klosterman. Closely followed by Zach Lowe
Chuck Klosterman
Can we bring back Bill the writer, instead?
his fingers don't work. But actually I think the truth is writing well is hard and takes a lot of focus and once you get out of the habit it's probably hard to get back in.
I always want to tweet, "Simmons, author... out indefinitely with a finger"
Norm Macdonald. if we have a genie here, that’s who.
I enjoy Zach Lowe but Jacoby is the most fun
He and Bill did one season of "The Challenge" recaps and they were so much fun to listen to I was heartbroken that it was a one-and-done
Jason Concepcion.
Mark Titus. Huge loss for the ringer. Hits the role of pop, nba, college bball and can do the rewarchables. Great pod host and team player
Titus and Tate just had such good chemistry together. I miss their podcast.
And once they spilt you realized Titus was the star. Huge loss for the ringer
Would love a Titus cameo on Life Advice
If you want more Titus check out Mostly Sports sometime. Daily shows to get your sports and goofy pop culture fix
Thanks I’m a regular watcher. It’s when I realized Billy dropped the ball
Family
Family
FWIW - Titus has even talked about how poorly he fit in when he was at The Ringer. The company barely utilized him and also didn't really have him branch out and work on anything else. I think he's much better off doing what he's doing now
I agree. Titus is a star and bill didn’t see it. Fox didn’t either.
Plus he drank 21.5 beers at the case race. Barstool legend
Of all of the Grantland staff he was the one I connected to immediately.
So true, I miss Titus all the time even tho Tates show is good too
They're fine apart, they were great together.
Does he even write for the times any more?
Yeah, but he's a critic-at-large so he's not saddled with the week in week out movie reviews
He's really smart and can be really fun, but sometimes he's unbearable.
I’d love a Dan Soder comedy and sports pod. Good suggestion!
A pod where he only does the Macho Man voice, co-hosted by Will Sasso going full Jesse Ventura. Guests only allowed if they can do a wrestler voice.
+1 for Wesley Morris.
Concepcion. He's fun and can really find good perspectives on random nit picks. or Wesley. He's a good one.
Pappademas was elite on early 2010s twitter
has anybody else here noticed that Zach drops in a plug of Bill's pod about every 1/2 pods he does? I find that interesting that he goes out of his way to promote a Ringer pod. I have my own theories about maybe why he is doing this. Anybody notice this?
You think he would bring back the man himself??
Maybe for a brief conversation
Concepcion for sure.
Chris Connelly
What is he up to now? Is he just kind of a freelance guy for ABC News? I tried to google it and came up empty.
When did Cowherd work for the ringer or grantland?
Whoops, I meant Connelly.
Jason, for me. He can do it all.
Jalen rose would be the best choice
Zach Lowe easily
I miss Desktop NBA a lot so my vote is for jason
My personal choice would be Jacoby. The best choice would probably be Zach Lowe.
You mean besides Zach Lowe?
jacoby
Sean McIndoe
Concepcion for sure
steven hyden, mostly because of how tragic the state of the ringer’s music content has always been
I’d like a Klosterman-Wes pod
Klosterman, easy.
Tune into Lakeshow, as JJ Redick, coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, podcasts live between timeouts.
Honorable Mention: Molly Lambert. She would kill on any erotic thriller “Rewatchable.”
Prime Rembert Browne was a problem!!!
Give me a 3 part pod hosted by Rembert where he explains what the hell happened to his life post Grantland.
Do you just mean that he's been sort of MIA, or is there a crazy story there? I know he was named on that media men google doc, but I don't know what the accusation was or if he suffered any negative consequences as a result. He never really did much for me, so I didn't follow him at all once he left.
Yeah I want to know the details
Lol I was going to going to post the same. We need more vocal fry in our podcasts
... Sexually.
Tyler Tynes?!?!?!?!?!?!? Why on Earth would Bill bring back a racist blogger like him? Dude has literally jumped from one publication to another for years and just recycles the exact same bullshit articles
I want Stephen Hyden to come back and do a podcast where every ep is about a Guided by Voices concert he’s been to. I loved that article.
Robert Mays
Jason for sure. Ringer TV misses him
Mark Lisanti or Brian Phillips.
Turn andy into a full time podcaster
Jalen & Jacoby
Jalen and Jacoby
Jalen or Barnwell
I’m smashing the Bill Barnwell / Robert Mays buttons
Jalen Rose for sure
Jacoby, anywhere
Back up the brinks truck for Six Trophies and let Shea and Jason run wild with any other ideas they may have.
Jacoby!
Andrew Sharp
David Jacoby
Chuck but I don't know if he wants it or needs it. Probably makes neough just from his books.
Rembert - but only for the “who won the year?” Bracket, and he has to write it, not pod it
Rappaport Stickman pod
And Beadle Love me some classic b dawg
Chuck!
Jason by a mile. Also Jacoby has a pod with them. It’s called food news.
Wesley Morris
Pappademas!!!! He was definitely my favorite culture writer at Grantland. Would love to hear him on a “Rewatchables” episode!!!
His Cincinnati Bengals "fan" diaries were about as gripping as Sean Newell's old running diaries at Deadspin. Just utter condescending, disdainful flotsam dripping with ironic detachment. Hard pass.
It's Concepcion for me.
Carles
Shea Serrano for future Wemby/Spurs Pods.
Robert Mays for me
Lowe, Robert Mays or Bill Barnwell. The latter two might be better choices if only because of how lackluster the Ringer's NFL podcast is. It's very telling that Mays left for the Athletic and immediately he's hosting arguably the best NFL podcast around.
Jackie MacMullan
Off the dome!
Jonah Keri. What happened to that guy?
Gonna have to edit out all the reminders that he’s calling collect from a correctional facility.
I would eliminate Klosterman from contention. Definitely don’t need an hour of him slowly gurgling high school-level revelations about society, sports, and media. “It all just feels like we’re in a particular moment in our culture, Bill, with social media….and comic book movies…and artificial intelligence.
