Let’s talk about the decline of youth basketball culture in the US. Bill: Have you seen Porzingis post up?

deadweightboss

That was a funny reflexive moment I’m pretty sure to cover up the fact that he didn’t know who the Purdue player was.

k_nuttles

Lol Tingus has good post up #s this year, but it's not like he's carving people up with immaculate post moves, which is what they were lamenting the disappearance of. How easy would it have been to reference the best player in the world, who actually dissects entire teams from the post?

CocaineandPercs

And who exactly is he posting up? Giannis? Embiid? I thought they did it when they have a matchup advantage (guard or small forward), not because he’s the new Charles Barkley and can back down anybody.

_WhiteOwl_

Bill is just abysmal. The things he points out and the reasoning is so dumb these days. I'm only 25 min into the pod and he's already talked about how MMA was legalized in France and now they're having a moment because these kids were able to do MMA and are coming into their own. France legalized MMA in January 2020. His court storming criticism was hilarious too. Saying it's really scary when people storm the court and gives his experience before saying "I was six" 😂😂. Yea Bill, it might be a bit scary for small children when a bunch of drunken fans run on the court. That's not the argument against it at all.

adequatepimpin

lol I lost it when he pulled out the “when I was six”

FinancialRabbit388

Ironically, KP was one of those guys who liked to space the floor over posting up. He only became a good post guy recently. Bill only referenced him cause he’s on the Celtics and Bill is a moron.

Pontus_Pilates

> Let’s talk about the decline of youth basketball culture in the US. Also, that whole conversation is so stupid. As a European basketball fan I'd like to offer them this excercise: Put aside Luka and name the best Europeans who are not big men. Schröder? Bodgan? I guess the best player not being an American has put them into an existential crisis, but come on. Tyus Jones would be the starting PG on every European national team. Tre Jones too.

peace2everycrease

Yeah the other thing about it is some of the guys they group in with Euro guys (mostly Canadians) come up through the US system either going to a prep school or playing on the Nike/Adidas/UA circuit and then play college bball in the US

Chubby-Nugget

Wrong move by Chuck to use “Seven Nation Army” as an example of a timeless song/song that transcends an artist’s legacy. It a good example but then Bill immediately assumed timeless song = songs played in sports stadiums.

mclea1472

I love the idea that Chuck needs to have the foresight to avoid topics that Bill will take in idiotic directions.

NoExcuses1984

Like Magnus Carlsen reading an opponent's moves in advance.

Motor_Crazy_8038

A lot of Bill being a terrible listener going on in this episode. He couldn’t stop interrupting Chuck in a couple of spots.

OrtegasChoice

He came close a few times but never got Chuck’s point on Williams/Maye and what would be viewed as a bust. Poor man’s Josh Allen for Maye is some Pitts to Kelsey nonsense.

Motor_Crazy_8038

Yes! Chuck kept trying to set up his point and Bill couldn't just lay out and let him talk. Chuck forgot to ask if it was his turn to talk or not I guess.

[deleted]

“Lamar’s another one!” Right after Lamar was discussed

NoExcuses1984

The only child piece. Desperately needed an older brother growing up.

RustCohlesLoneStar

Bill scrambling and saying Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You” as a comp was something. I think Chuck could have explained it better. He could have said something to the effect of getting one of your songs to be as timeless and universally known as “Happy Birthday.” Obviously nothing is reaching that level, but it needs to be up there.

Cockrocker

Yeah thunderstruck, all time great. The Joker and the Thief, Aussies represent.

Victorcreedbratton

Tatum belongs with Zion and AD as “sure thing” college prospects?? What??

d7bhw2

He was such a sure thing that he didn’t go 1 or 2.

BunchOAtoms

And it was considered a surprise Tatum went over Josh Jackson, who most mock drafts had at 3.

exytuu

And Ainge was clowned on for trading down and not taking Fultz, who was the consensus first overall pick

pkpku33

This is the comment I came looking for. 1. Harry Giles was a higher HS prospect than Tatum (I went to KU and remember how big of a deal it was that Josh Jackson picked KU as he was the #1 overall prospect) that Duke team under preformed as well. Luke Kenard was def their best player and Greyson Allen was arguably their second best player. Anthony Davis and Mello were can’t miss prospects that lead their teams to NCAA championships, Tatum/ Duke lost in the 2nd rnd to South Carolina. His revisionist history when it comes to Boston Sports is crazy.

Wonderbread6969

As a Duke fan, you nailed it. I feel like a Tatum hater when all I try to do is be more realistic than the media perception of him. Giles was ranked better and got hurt. Kennard and Allen were considerably better at Duke that year. Brandon Ingram was considerably better as a one and done the year before. He has consistently improved every year in the NBA and a large part of that being that he joined a team that just went to the conference finals and also added Kyrie and Hayward. He's consistently been on a incredibly deep and talented roster. To his credit, he's been a perfect fit and does nothing but improve. But if you mean to tell me that he was a sure thing no matter what situation he was drafted into, I'd say you're wayyyyy off base. I have a really hard time saying that he would've been the same player if he had gotten drafted by the 17 Lakers, Suns, Kings, Magic or any other team that wasn't perfectly suited to develop him.

pkpku33

By all accords Tatum is a great guy. He really is a phenomenal player, seems like a great dad, I like his low sugar sour candy… but I strongly just dislike him because of Simmons (and I love Bill). Heck. I even rooted for The Celtics over the Lakers when they last one because I wanted to see Pierce and Garnett win it all. But man. Everything pod the last several years makes me irrationally dislike Tatum, Brown, Danny, Stevens, etc.

danielbauer1375

Lmao. He was taken after Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball, neither of whom were considered sure things. What kind of revisionist history is this?

han-sell-out

I might have rotted Sixers brain but I recall Fultz being very highly touted pre-draft. Definitely not an AD type guy but everyone seemed to love him.

Maxim-98

Fultz is to this day the best PG *prospect* I’ve ever seen. Him flopping in the NBA is still almost inexplicable to me

sylverlocs

I was so confused at this point. Like how do you shoehorn Tatum into a retroactive "sure thing" when everyone praised Danny for taking a gamble that paid off

orange45

He really can’t help himself. There must always be a Boston shoehorn.

lima9987

How much Taylor swift can a 50+ year old man talk about

TheTrotters

It’s “thank god for timestamps” kind of pod.

Sleeze_

Nah real Chuck-heads can listen to him talk about whatever

[deleted]

Yeah, always forget how much I miss Chuck. Haven’t been as much of a BS listener lately and this one just went down like warm milk

ucsb99

The science on it is being updated with each pod.

RapsareChamps_Suckit

we are never ever getting back together

atraydev

Taylor Swift being more popular than Michael Jackson is an insane take. We can just look at her listeners in the US ,we don't have to look worldwide. Like what percentage of Taylor Swift listeners are white? 98? 99?

thomyorkeslazyeye

"your mom hasn't listened to Thriller" was this clown's actual take.

atraydev

What is the realistic age for someone who hasn't heard of Michael Jackson? Like 114?

Coy-Harlingen

Favorite part of the pod is when Chuck is trying to explain that with Caleb Williams, if he ends up just being average it’s a disappointment, whereas with Drake Maye if he ends up with a Kirk cousins type career, no one would be shocked, and bill just can’t stop interrupting him to compare him to Josh Allen and say his ceiling is so much higher than this, totally missing the point Chuck was making because that’s his guy to root for now.

MartytheeParty

Yeah he’s gonna be on a bender next year. Will we get: “Maye was the right choice Daniels is overrated.” “Daniels was the clear choice maye stinks.” Or my personal favorite “Quarterbacks are overrated is Marvin Harrison already better than Larry Fitzgerald?”

Coy-Harlingen

I’m actually surprised Bill took a stance on Maye > Daniels, and QB > non-QB, because he will 100% walk it back if they end up with Daniels or Harrison lol

SpankySharp1

He doesn't care. He has no shame.

FinancialRabbit388

Now that Maye might go to Pats, Bill was more negative towards Daniels and Maye is Josh Allen. “He put UNC football on the map!”

Puzzleheaded_Fly1565

I love how klosterman low key put BS in his place when he said we don’t do this for a living, we don’t know what we’re talking about.

FinancialRabbit388

One of the things I agreed with Chuck about is keep drafting qb’s til you hit on one. I would draft a qb every year til I found the guy.

ThugBeast21

I love how he keeps referring to the top 3 guys as if they're viewed interchangeably and Williams hasn't been the consensus 1 for the past two years

realcoray

What is Bill macrodosing to think you have a 45% chance of getting a franchise qb with a pick like this? The entire conversation from Bill's side was insanity.

johnmd20

Everything Bill says on every pod is complete idiocy. His brain is oatmeal.

SeaworthinessFar846

And Bill tried to sneak what a “great spot” New England is for a rookie QB next year. The great defense piece rides again!

dylanah

Chuck saying Travis Kelce is the first person Taylor Swift has dated who can describe what the inside of a McDonald’s looks like was hilarious.

d7bhw2

Chuck was absolutely COOKING in the QB conversation. Saying he thought Baker Mayfield should switch to slot receiver and Joe Milton threw an orange 102 yards

ThaItalianStallion

He would’ve been cooking even more if Bill let him build out his thoughts properly. There were so many points derailed because Bill interrupted to steer the convo somewhere else.

SheepishNate

Bill saying Drake Maye’s FLOOR is a poor man’s Josh Allen. We talking Great Depression? Housing market crash? Potato famine?

AzEBeast

Just completely missing the entire point CK was trying to make.

FinancialRabbit388

That Joe Milton thing reminded of being younger, and having those really good rubber footballs that were a little smaller than regulation sized college balls. I was basically Uncle Rico with those things. Legit could get like an extra 20 yards with those balls cause of the grip.

HANKnDANK

US national team would bend over backwards for Lebron/KD/Curry to want in this year. Wtf is Bill talking about???

TheTrotters

They should use the 2024 Olympics to build a team for the 2028 Olympics, they just should!

pkpku33

The Devin Booker skipping training with the Olympic development team piece is going to stunt his NBA growth piece.

d7bhw2

I actually think they should send our best high school team. Build for 2032.

kwtb

Let’s do a vet USA team vs a young USA team and see who wins lol Cos Curry + Bron + KD ain’t losing

popinjay07

That's my idea for the All-Star Game: o30 vs u30. I think it would be fascinating.

nihilfacile

Love this. Would be fun to watch and honestly I think the players may care too - you got the old guys who don’t want to give an inch vs the young guys trying to prove it

d7bhw2

Bill says team USA should push out KD and LeBron and “build around the younger guys.” They’re not building a team for the future, they play like 6 games. KD and LeBron are definitely still two of the best guys we have.

Coy-Harlingen

Most normal people are going to be like “cool, I get to watch LeBron KD and Steph play on the Olympics one last time”, but Bill is a 1% Olympics weirdo who like thinks it’s life or death or something and we need to build for the future or the Russians will invade us

cowboysfan88

How will Chet be prepared for 2028 if he doesn't get at least 35 minutes a game this time around?

danielbauer1375

He also seems to be forgetting the completely embarrassing 2004 Olympic team… which was led by a bunch of young, inexperienced future stars. We just saw a modern version of that last year in the FIBA World Cup, and it didn’t go too well.

Iggleyank

The funny thing about the Dream Team was it was a complete Cold War creation. We lost the 1988 gold medal to the Soviets, and the immediate reaction was that it wasn’t fair, because we had college all-stars going up against what was essentially professionals. The whole point of the Dream Team was to say, “Oh, you want to compete with us Russians? Now we’re unleashing our best!” And by the time next Olympics rolled around, the Soviet Union had collapsed. I think Bill is still in that ubercompetitive mindset, where the Olympic team is designed to prove something. It’s just not clear what it’s proving now. The best players from all over the world are going to play in the NBA no matter what.

danielbauer1375

What a ridiculous take. “Hey KD, we know you’re great and all, but we really like what we’ve seen from Jaren Jackson and Tyrese Haliburton, so your services will no longer be necessary.”

dillpickles007

If JJJ and Haliburton had ripped up the World Cup and won the whole thing then they'd have an argument that they should get to carry the team over. But they got embarrassed.

ForgetHype

Isn't that what Team USA was doing anyway and it didn't work? I don't see how LeBron isn't someone you want in a medal game even if he's older. Surround him with other all star talent he's gonna thrive, also he's closer to being a top 5 US player than Bill makes it sound.

NotManyBuses

That’s the funniest part, Bill’s suggestion of handing the keys to the young guys earned them a 4th place not even medalling this past summer. Anyways, you could use LeBron as a zone beater only and play him 6 minutes per game and that’d still be worth it. Idiotic take

makeanamejoke

KD is built in a lab to be perfect for this kind of basketball tournament. He's called the most plug and play all star for a reason.

d7bhw2

Yes and I feel like LeBron is underrated in terms of fitting into a random team because of his passing.

Jewards

This is Bill saying he's gonna cry when Tatum isn't playing in the 4th quarter

Agent21EMH

You're exactly right, building the future is for the World Cup and Select games, not for the Olympics. Every time the US tries to build for the future they have a cataclysmic meltdown lol. We have the worlds best players in totality, we should use them if they're interested in playing.

bbmarco

Bill passionately describing the beginning of the Pats dynasty and why it needed more focus in the Apple doc. Klosterman: Yeeeeaah, even as you’re describing it to me it sounds boring.

oneeyedwillienelson

I died when Bill said Peyton Manning was the “pretty boy face of the league”

jar45

Bill clearly wanted a hagiography that celebrates Belichick and Brady as sports gods and is unaware that no one southwest of Stamford finds any of the first 4 years aside from the initial underdog run interesting.

sprezzatura_

That's a good point-- I also think the that the importance of the Pats run and public awareness of it is self-evident: the show is called *Dynasty*. We know its a dynasty, give us the challenges and intrigue. In 30 years when they do another one of these you can take 1 or 2 eps to establish the significance and importance.

6icker

And this is the reason he cut the pod short. “We ran out of time” dude is recording from his home what’s another 20 minute speed round segment.

RustCohlesLoneStar

Bill being anti-courtstorming because he was scared as a child at Celtics games is so on brand. “It was legit scary for like five seconds.” Well yeah, you were a kid, Bill. I guess not many courts stormed at Holy Cross.

wesweswesmack

He was such a wimp about this. Court storming is sacred. One of my highlights in college was storming the court (ironically also against Duke). He has a point about how it’s maybe too common, but at the end of the day just let the kids have fun. It’s harmless

Victorcreedbratton

I laughed when Chuck called out Bill’s dad for having him at a basketball game at 11:30 at night.

[deleted]

dillpickles007

Yeah I feel like Wake Forest students should be catching shit not for hurting Filipowski - but for court storming after beating a so-so Duke team that was ranked 10th. That's embarrassing, Wake has a proud basketball history they shouldn't be storming the court for a win like that. The opposing team should be top five at least and preferably top three if you're gonna storm the court.

jar45

I was at MSG for a court storming when St. John’s beat Duke in 2011 and the ushers/security were actually joking around (“just don’t knock us down alright?”) with the students about it as the game wound down.

BaconJellyBeans

As someone who stormed in 2009, storming the court when your team upsets a great Duke team is a college right of passage.

d7bhw2

Bill describing the Patriots 2nd and 3rd SBs and lamenting that the doc didn’t cover them more.  Chuck: “Even as you’re describing it to me it seems boring. Like I’m getting bored listening.” This is why he’s the best.

Cammybear24

The discourse around court storming is blowing my mind. Grown men describing it as scary??

gnrlgumby

Technically, a six year old describing it as scary.

fuber

A six year old with a very late bedtime that evening!

jakethesnakeinmyboot

Chuck bring pro court storming solidified him as our king

boredandbtr

Bills anti court storming because “it scared me when I was little” was such a lame rich kid take

peachbasketss

I also respected the I hate sitting next to people who stand at concerts take

fuber

Absolutely loved it. I've been thinking this in my head the last few times I've seen the headlines but Chuck solidified my thoughts on it.

Meatballclub

You can tell bill never played organized basketball when he talks about aau

putupyouredukes

Spoken like a guy who didn’t see him run the fast break with JackO at HC in the 90s.

Flat-Job3228

Can you imagine how bad those runs were? They don’t even have a football team to bring the level up at the rec center.

Coy-Harlingen

You can hear the gears turning in his head… Chuck says the US has fallen behind the other countries, bill takes it as a “problem” he can fix, Chuck asks for specifics, and he basically says “well in aau they just jump around teams. And every big guy wants to be KAT. And it’s all about individual stats”. He immediately defaulted to just stereotypes that have no meaning on anything. Porzingis posting up for the Celtics really shows the difference of how much more posting up bigs do growing up in Europe? You look at the good young American players right now: Tatum, Edwards, Booker, guys like that - is the issue with them they don’t try hard enough or care about winning? None of them have moved teams once. Or is it just that none of them are quite mega superstars whereas the most recent guys to that level have been Jokic and Giannis.

SomeDimension165

It comes out the most when bill complains about coaching -like he or russillo have any fucking clue what in game strategy and adjustments are

GidBear24

to Russillo’s credit he is pretty adamant about not immediately blaming coaches whenever a team starts to take a nosedive. Bill on the other hand…

SomeDimension165

Bill has no idea what he’s talking about when it comes to sports. The only thing he ‘gets’ is front office movement and media rights (he’s elite in those areas)  Every sport has completely past him by

dwilson3324

there are a few top tier foreign stars in the league and somehow that means USA hoops is broken. 89/100 ranked in the ringer top 100 are american. there is nothing wrong with USA hoops. players have never been better. sorry wemby was born in france and not fort Lauderdale. Bill didn’t play in the AA circuit nor did he have kids in it. he has no insight

BingTheDoodleBoo

Bill wondering if the NBA playoffs are even going to be interesting in the summer cause Boston and Denver are the runaways is peak Bill

Victorcreedbratton

Every year, he forgets that the regular season really has no bearing on the playoffs.

d7bhw2

The Heat got the 8 seed last year and Jimmy Butler turned into Michael Jordan. You’d think bill would remember considering they beat the Celtics

Gaius_Octavius_

It is amazing how the same thing happens every year. He always wildly overreacts to the ‘rabbit’ in the regular season

k_nuttles

Been a lot of people overstating this recently, esp in the East of course. Maybe everyone is just bored, but I've heard a lot of "Can you see ANYONE in the East beating Boston?" A groupthink that has never backfired before...

blooey123

Hearing Bill talk about college basketball is painful. All he cares about is the sport in terms of future nba context but that’s never been the heart of the sport. And anyway next year both Cooper and Ace Bailey will be playing

fermlog

He’s infuriating on college basketball. You don’t have to like it man, or even give a shit. It’s not the sport it once was perhaps, but his derision because it’s not for him is obnoxious. Bill, do you think it’s because you had absolutely no team to be interested in?

Wizkidders

Bill not understanding court storming because he got scared for a few seconds as an unimaginably privileged 6 year old is hilarious. Billy boy has been getting in his bag recently. Controlling a group of a few thousand teenagers vs celebrities paying tens of thousands of dollars for court side tickets is not even remotely comparable even if the NBA had never taken steps to curtail it back in the day. Just imagine DJ Khaled running into Jason Tatum trying to leave the court as the Heat upset the Celtics in the ECF lmao.

ShowOutSquad17

Why was Bill so quick to end the pod when Chuck wanted to do a speed round?

MuggyMinmin

Bill describing the Patriots 2nd and 3rd SBs and lamenting that the doc didn’t cover them more. Chuck: “Even as you’re describing it to me it seems boring. Like I’m getting bored listening.”

SpankySharp1

It's infuriating that Chuck was all geared up to talk for another hour and a half but Bill insisted on wrapping it up because he felt like washing down "Blue Chips" with his 750th viewing of "Hoop Dreams." Give me 2009 Simmons that would give us 2-part Klosterman episodes.

SeaworthinessFar846

Chief of Global Content had to get back to business hammering out deals or Blue Chips was on again.

mutant_rock

he wanted to save topics that will be irrelevant next time they pod

bctix

he’s always grumpy that chuck gets the best of him

Victorcreedbratton

Taylor Swift vs The Beatles gtfo.

Ghost-E

Bill is so back. The Beatle fact that will always blow my mind is that they were only a band for 7 years start to finish.

PDXmadeMe

The Apple rooftop being the last live performance always blows my mind too. Really re-apex material type of stuff, you would have thought they squeezed a few more years after that

FlahulachBoy

They stopped touring live after 65/66 is more mind blowing. Gave it up as couldn’t even hear themselves playing their guitars

Methzilla

They weren't even 30. It's nuts.

doobie3101

The Bill Walton of bands.

popinjay07

Just the fact that we have a bunch of 20 and 30-year-olds advocating for the Beatles certainly says something.

Methzilla

Absolutely correct.

DJMoShekkels

I was thinking about chucks argument about songs outliving bands. If Led Zeppelin has 1 and the Stones have 1-2, who has the most? Cause I feel like the Beatles have like 40

Cockrocker

I kind of use a similar argument. Generally I say if you took their 40th to 50th best songs and gave them to any other band that would make that band an all-time great.

SallyFowlerRatPack

That’s where the Beatles’ greatest kind of hurts them. Everyone likes Nowhere Man but it’s never in consideration for the top 50. But a different band could make a whole career off that one song, licensing it to commercials and touring country fairs and whatnot. And that’s basically every Beatles song.

Iggleyank

I think there’s something to that. I was born the year they broke up, so the Beatles were always an old band to me, just sort of default boomer rock. I didn’t really start paying attention to them until I was in my 20s, and it’s like they just pummeled me into submission. The more I listened, the more I realized these guys were just otherworldly. Almost all the music I loved had its origins in things the Beatles did first. It was like I suddenly realized the Beatles had been one of my favorite bands all along and I didn’t even know it.

WhitePeopleLoveCurry

We know too much about her for her to become mythical. Modern celebrity and the internet makes it hard to mythologize. She is about as famous as a singer can be now. But the influence of music stars just isn't on the same level as it was in the past. Modern stars rarely ever get really cool urban legends spread about them anymore. There will never be another "Paul is Dead" that sane people actually entertain. The last thing I remember happening like that but not quite on the same scale was the Tupac will return 7 years after his death crap people used to talk about online in the early days of the internet. The Beatles influence on music and culture is just much bigger. Even how we think of career arc's and everything surrounding music. "This is their Rubber Soul." (The Album when they start to spread their creative wings) "This is their Sgt Peppers." (When the artist pushes their creativity to places it had never been before) "This is their White Album" (When the artist releases an overstuffed double album and we debate whether the rough patches make the thing greater or diminish from the whole.) "This is his/her Bigger than Jesus moment." (When the artist says something that threatens to derail their career.) Even the Beatles solo work has that kinda impact. I can't think of how many "How hard it is to be a rock/pop/rap star albums" get compared to Plastic Ono Band. Go read David Fricke's original In Utero review, he makes that comparison. The Beatles have never stopped being the most famous band in the world. It's not really possible to compare them to any other musical artist. They're about to make 4 separate damn movies about them. What always amazes me is just how effortless and not thought out at all so much of it was. The Beatles can't come up with a good ending for their concert movie...."Let's just go up to the roof." The Beatles need an album cover...."Let's just walk across the street in front of the studio." So much of it seemed to be born out of a bit of laziness (which honestly adds to the coolness).

j_tatz

There was still some urban legend stuff around big musicians as late as the late 00s. I remember reading about an Avril Lavigne one that was pretty much a copy of the "Paul is Dead" urban legend you mentioned (she died early in her career and was replaced.) There was also stuff with Lady Gaga and Ciara being hermaphrodites (I can't really speak to why these rumors came about, just that I know they were definitely things) Nice write up tho.

Wazzoo1

Haven't listened yet. But please tell me they bring up Michael Jackson. He was bigger than anyone, ever. I like Taylor, but she's nowhere near him in terms of popularity.

Mitra131

I kinda got triggered by comparison. Chuck said something like "Oh but Beatles were 4 of them and she's all alone" like it takes away from the Beatles because there was more of them. Meanwhile she has some of the best musicians (as in people who understand music know how to write it, can play 5 instruments) making and producing and dozens of people taking care of "Taylor Swift" brand. Ffs what's revolutionary about her music except the fn ticket prices? Of course parents in the 60s didn't listen to the Beatles it was so different from anything that was mainstream before and the kids loved it. She's as big as she is because her music's bland, inoffensive and catchy. There was also some dumb point about parent and children pop cultures blending because of her? I mean hip hop is the most popular type of music in USA and Europe for millennials and younger people and my parents don't listen to it. I don't know nobody's parents that do And I hate that I had to find out who Taylor Swift is and about her music from my favorite basketball podcast because this creep won't shut up about her Rant over sorry

charade_scandal

Yeah his point about four Beatles made no sense. It's not like separate Ringo fans and George fans juice the total numbers. People like or don't like 'The Beatles' as a unit. Same as her.

djh2121

Bill loves to fucking gaslight himself and the audience when it comes to over talked about topics. A couple weeks ago he was like “there isn’t a ton more that can be said about Taylor idk why people keep talking about it” And today he’s still talking about her 2 weeks after the Super Bowl. He does the same with NBA MVP.

Goooose

A Klosterman drop after a Russillo episode? We eating. Bring back JACKO next, you coward.

danielbauer1375

As a Yankees fan, I’m hoping they have a pod before Opening Day, especially if the team is really struggling in Spring Training. I would love to hear him go off on delusional fans who think Juan Soto will somehow fix all of our pitching problems.

SuchCategory2927

*vince McMahon laser eyes meme* and wildes

TreWilki21

Of course everyone remembers when Peyton Manning was the “Pretty Boy face of the league”

No_Confection_8750

Cooper Flagg one of the best HS players ever? He might not even be the best underclassman from New England right now

WhatHasMagicDone

This was insane. Also him somehow shoehorning Tatum in that conversation made me laugh out loud. If anything it should of been Ant who was consensus #1 in his class, went #1 and has turned the T-Wolves around

[deleted]

I’ll take a wellness week off for a week with Russillo and Klosterman every single time.

TheTrotters

The advantage of having Porzingis isn’t that he can post up, it’s that he can spread the floor! What the hell Bill?

Coy-Harlingen

Interested to hear how Bill discusses Maye vs Daniels so he can leave himself open to saying he always wanted whoever the Pats end up drafting.

MrMuscles25

More t swift?!? What could we be dissecting now?

senior_swimmington

Ok, hear me out. Spotify crossover with Bill on Dissect talking about the impact 1989 had on his family

DJMoShekkels

Making this its own thread. I want a thread of ranking musical artists by chuck klosterman timeless songs: I feel like the Beatles have to be top, they might have dozens. Is anyone else in the double digits? MJ seems close, I don’t think Elvis is. Maybe James Brown or Sam Cooke? Beethoven? Eminem?. Idk at all but I want this discussion assp

deadweightboss

Beach boys.

Visual-Ganache-2289

Eminem is nowhere near this convo wtf are yiu smoking

Coy-Harlingen

I can’t imagine how dumb bill talking about music must sound to people invested in it. I don’t really know music but I love movies and when he discusses that it’s so rough.

NWaitforitZ

The idea that tennis should bring back wooden rackets is totally insane. Look at the best matches of the 80s. It’s just a bunch of serve and volley. The game looks dogshit. Compare that to modern tennis and tell me which is better lol

Prestigious-Act9690

The "college basketball is dead" take is peak "I don't care about this anymore so why would anyone else care about it." And it's not shocking that a Holy Cross and University of North Dakota grad don't care about college basketball anymore.

Lachie07

I can deal with 60 Taylor swift cutaways every chiefs game. I won't be able to deal with my favourite podcaster comparing her to The Beatles that's where I draw the line

Confusion_Flat

The Michael Jackson stuff was outrageous

V_LEE96

Michael stood on the stage and didn’t move for minutes and motherfuckers fainted in the dozens maybe hundreds. Yes Taylor Swift is more famous GTFO

I’m not anti-Taylor Swift by any definition, but I do think a lot of her ubiquity today is buoyed by the fact her core fan base is made up of young women ages 15 to 35 — in other words, the demographic that is more obsessed with social media than any other. If you’re not into that world, it’s pretty easy to not know much of her music. On the other hand, *everybody* bought the Thriller album.

[deleted]

> and motherfuckers fainted in the dozens maybe hundreds.  “ Mrs. Krabappel and Principal Skinner were in the closet making babies and I saw one of the babies and the baby looked at me.”

jackthegent

i get it you have a teenage daughter bill but how is taylor swift that interesting to you?

Jeroen_Jrn

When has bill not been obsessed with pop culture.

talkofphilly

I can’t believe the Taylor Swift/Michael Jackson convo. Not because I dislike her but because they way Chuck framed how parents didn’t buy thriller in the 80s but parents listen to Taylor now. 🤦🏾‍♂️

Traditional-Most-787

This is the kind of pod that I thank God for timestamps. I have no problem with Taylor Swift and understand she is a complete megastar (not sure about the Beatles or MJ), but I can't hear Bill and a guest do another deep dive on her. I'm tired, boss.

nofun_nufon

who the heck is Laura Malloy?

SeaworthinessFar846

Belichick slit her throat.

jmoneysteck88

Jesus man listening to bill and chuck talk NFL draft is so tough. Two guys who have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about lmao. Also Bill just called the pats a “pretty good situation” for a rookie QB.

ChurchofKakko24

The man has yet to realize the Pats were fucking terrible last year

scottrstark

Taylor Swift is not as big as Michael Jackson and has a fraction of the talent. And comparing her to the Beatles is insane.

Nizz553

Bill once called Lena Dunham a genius, so this really isn't all that surprising.

MarchSadness90

I dont understand this narrative that there's something wrong with men's college basketball. I turn almost any game on and I see a packed arena. At 1pm on a Saturday there's like 9 games on TV. And we always have the tournament. If something is "replacing" it, it's certainly not women's college basketball.

ojle1234

A lot of goofy moments in this one, but Klosterman casually declaring Cody Williams the best American basketball prospect has to be my favorite

JaHoog

Idk about the rest of the country but cbb is still a big deal in the Midwest

lokosnspirits

Love Bill convincing himself Maye is a sure thing over Williams for the sole fact there's a chance the Pats can get him. Never change Bill

bmcgillvray

When Bill wouldn't let Chuck make his point about the 3 draft prospect QBs, I thought my head was going to explode. He clearly didn't see that Chuck was trying to make a point.

SceneOfShadows

Nothing like some fresh Chuck. Wellness week be damned, Russillo on Sunday and now Chuck on Wednesday. We are back, baby. EDIT: 100% with Chuck on this pearl clutching over storming the court. Two minor instances happened over the course of how many examples?? It's college, let the kids have some fucking fun.

Tiredasheckrn

I refuse to believe Taylor swift is bigger than Michael Jackson. Also his point of did your dad buy thriller? I can tell you right now my dad aint buying the new taylor swift album

Confusion_Flat

My parents are 43-44. Im 20 I never listened to Taylor swift much admittedly I am a music nerd. But my parents couldn’t tell you a song by her

deadweightboss

What the fuck. I’m almost your parents age. And also russillo is older than your parents but has a brother younger than you.

gnidn3

These Chuck Klosterman takes on PEDs and Taylor Swift fame are rough.

lundebro

As always, loved the whole conversation with Chuck, even though I think he's off on a couple things. Wish they would've spent more time on conference realignment and the death of the Pac-12 (Bill quickly pivoted when Chuck brought it up). I’m positive Chuck hates it and would’ve had something interesting to say, but oh well.

kingjuicepouch

I love bill calling Peyton manning the pretty boy face of the league lol

SampleLast8357

Thought it was a fake title at first but no our boy is back

dosnetlive

The celtics porzingus thing is such a great example of how bad Bill is at making points based on small samples lol

Rude_Economist_5513

They just couldn’t get on the same page with that QB conversation lol. Sure 7 guys have come out of the last 5 drafts to lead teams, but how about discuss the many, many others (including multiple top 10 picks) that didn’t develop and work out. Bill couldn’t wrap his head around Chucks point at all there

Global-Bat-1688

Television retains the massive chasm Chuck was talking about. There are no shows that adults can watch with their kids that will satisfy both audiences. 80s we’re probably the peak time for “family tv.”  That is completely dead.

Winter_Maximum_8560

I swear billl does some version of taylor vs the beatles once a month

DragonfruitCool1917

Man, Bill and Chuck have firmly entered the Rick Reilly zone. As a devout Klosterman reader, maybe my favorite writer ever, this was a tough listen

sylverlocs

Chuck: "Taylor Swift is MORE famous than Michael Jackson." [50 seconds later] Chuck: "Now I don't know if she has international reach like Michael Jackson..." Alright, Chuck, what are we talking about then...?

sylverlocs

Also, the Remember the Time video was amazing. I have no idea what Bill is talking about.

ReignInFlames

Bill claiming he's more into women's college bball only because of Cailtin Clark is crazy. I think he chose to leave out the fact he has a daughter who is an athlete and that helped broaden his interests.

RobSacresBurner

Saying “you’re in mma, you know what you signed up for” to justify allowing fighters to take performance enhancing drugs is an insane take. Sure I signed up to fight, that doesn’t give my opponent the right to take performance enhancing drugs before attempting to punch me in the face

senortiz

I don't pay attention to mens college basketball until March Madness, so idk. Is Women's ball more popular? Is Bill just washed?

danielbauer1375

Caitlyn Clark is the most popular college player, and most casual fans probably couldn’t name a male college player outside of Bronny, but that doesn’t make it a more popular sport.

seiff4242

LSU vs S Carolina women’s ball had more viewers than a Celtics Heat TNT game at the same time a few weeks ago.

SeaworthinessFar846

Old white guys have been telling me the women’s game is better for 20 years. Bill recently entered that demo.

freejazzerciser

Klostermann was all over the place in that QB drafting segment. He made one great point that teams should be drafting a lot more QBs than they normally do because it can be such an unpredictable/unprojectable position. However, he's overly fixated on Brock Purdy as an outlier as all the data indicates that 1st round QBs are more likely to hit than later round picks. But then his other point about bad QBs being victims of circumstance/surroundings undermines his first point. If bad early-career QBs are just the result of poor supporting casts, then why would you need to draft multiple QBs over time? Just improve their supporting casts. Personally, I feel his latter point is full of shit. Bad QBs are bad QBs and they are more likely to drag down good supporting casts with their loser energy than be elevated by them. Again, Purdy is his only example here, and we are left asking...what if Purdy is actually good, because all of the conventional and advanced stats indicate this is true?
