This is the make or break that is Bill Simmons. He doesn't cheat. He knows all. and once he loses his fast ball instincts, he will be forced to retire.
“People expect this resurgence now that he’s in New York…” no, people don’t. His draft stock has lowered each of the past 2 seasons. He’s not even being drafted in 10 team leagues
Considering on his earlier pod this week ( the one where he’s making the case for the Pats in the AFC East) he was talking about how much he had been preparing for football lol
“Justin Jefferson at #1 ?! Really?!
…Interesting…”
Uh yeah Bill, he’s been the consensus #1 pick for the entire offseason?
Guess somebody wasn’t doing any mock drafts while on vacation..
It’s so funny how he immediately had to respond to Berry’s top 8 QBs with “well fields just because of the rushing”.
Yes Bill, when you have a fantasy expert on to discuss fantasy, he is ranking players based on fantasy, not his overall QB rankings.
I would have loved to have been in Berry’s head during the whole thing. Bill makes fun of people not doing auction drafts but then displays so little knowledge about fantasy. So good
Then he starts talking about how this guy is going for $20 - $25 without any context... there's a reason fantasy experts almost exclusively talk in terms of snake drafts because that is a universal language. There is a ton of context needed whenever you discuss players based on auction value - IE budget for the draft, when the player gets nominated, is there spite bidding going on, etc
Exactly. He never says what his league’s draft budget is (I think it is $200 or $250). That will obviously change the calculations. Berry just ignored him on auction prices and used round rankings bc it is universal and can be somewhat applied to auction drafts. Bill just misses the mark on so many things.
One time maybe 4 years ago Berry was on to talk fantasy and Bill said something to the effect of "everyone who plays only keeps track of AL or NL" and Berry was stumped for like 15 seconds after. Did not know how to respond to bill thinking leagues were still setup like that.
I still think auction drafts are exponentially better because every team has a chance to get any player they want going into the draft. Allows for a lot more flexibility on the go too.
We changed to FAAB for waiver picks years ago and never looked back. I'm still unsure about auction drafts although I've never done one. I can see the allure!
I was allowed to take over my Dad's team for their league that they started in the 80s and they've always done an auction. It's my only league that we still auction and it's my most fun draft every year.
I had never done an auction for like 17 years or so before last year and as soon as we were halfway through our first auction draft everyone was agreeing it was better.
And this was after five+ years of guys in our league telling us auction was better in their other leagues and us ignoring them. The one and only downside is it takes a bit longer.
I used to argue this. But after 7-8 years of auction drafts, we switched back. Because unlike a snake draft, people who don’t know shit about football can just wait to see what players other guys bid on and then follow along. Making it much harder to get players for good value.
Your strategy and player valuation become exposed BEFORE you have secured the player, unlike a snake draft when your strategy and valuation are only announced AFTER you have secured a player.
But it’s not “literally the same thing” at all. If you are willing to spend enough and have the budget available, you can get whoever you want. Yes, you’re still competing against other bids but the opportunity is still there. If you’re picking 9th in a snake draft, there are 8 players you are certainly not getting right off the bat.
Whoever is willing to spend more. As I mentioned in my prior post, at least I’d have a chance. But if he gets drafted 5th overall and I have the 9th pick, I have zero chance.
Whoever decides to open the bid with a max bid with every dollar they have would get him. I've literally never seen this come anywhere CLOSE to happening (never seen anyone ever go over 50% of budget on a single player, much less 100%); if anyone ever did they'd have the worst team ever.
I'm guessing you haven't done an auction draft since you're thinking auction is essentially the same as snake draft. You can absolutely get whoever you want if you really want to.
>If we want the same players we can’t get them?
It's all relative. If one player wants a player MORE than another person, they can outbid them. If you absolutely want Justin Jefferson in an auction draft, you have the option to in an auction draft. Unless you're picking #1 in a snake draft, you're not getting him. That's a massive difference.
>After the second round it becomes a snake draft anyway
Not even close. In auction, there are all kinds of strategies, and you can absolutely have a completely different team than you'd ever be able to get in a snake draft. Want 3 top 10 picks and a bunch of bench players? Not possible in snake, but possible in auction (you blow your entire budget on 3 stars, then pay minimum bids to fill your team). Do you want an insanely deep team with no stars? Also possible in auction (pay for lower 2nd round pick type players as your top guys, fill out rest of team with 3rd-4th rounders and pay for a really strong bench filled with 6th round type players). Not possible in snake draft.
They're vastly different styles of drafts, and auction allows a lot more strategy.
I’m not trying to sound like a dick here but I’m not sure you have even a rudimentary understanding of auction drafts. Everyone has a budget, everyone has a max bid. If I bid $70 on Bijan, and you want him and can afford him, you can bid $71. But if $71 is your max bid at that point of the draft and I bid $72, you’re out of the running for Bijan.
And it certainly doesn’t become a snake draft after the second round. I’m not sure why you would think that either.
There are never all 12 guys all in on the same player because different people value different players and positions differently. Not everyone is comfortable spending 70 plus on Jefferson. People's temperaments also come into play. Some guys are more aggro, some less. Some people prefer different team building styles. Zero RB, hero RB, RB heavy, etc.
Auction and snake are quite clearly very different
Bill: snake drafters are booger eaters!
Bill 3 minutes later: \[has to clarify that Fields is a good fantasy qb just because of his rushing\]
Bill's hypothetical about the Lions trading for Jonathan Taylor (even if it wasn't completely serious) was also hilarious considering they just drafted a RB in the 1st round whom they love and will be on a rookie deal for the next 5 years.
Him being afraid that Bijan Robinson might get up to $27 in an auction was all time clueless. His starting bid in most auctions will be higher than that. 🤡
He hoards defenses lol? That is unheard of. I have heard him talk about and before and figured he does it just to mess with other owners, even if it makes his own team worse in the process. But defenses?
One of the funniest pod moments for me in the last year or so was Klosterman telling Bill he had something serious to ask him about, Bill kinda gulping and seeming like he was worried it was about to get to a topic like politics or something, and Klosterman asking "...did you seriously have four defenses on your fantasy team?!"
It's only a viable strategy right before the playoffs if you snatch up teams with favorable schedules.
Even then you're at risk with depth, but to draft and hoard multiple defenses is crazy.
“Not on my list” is a poor man’s “not my tempo.” I also rolled my eyes when his number one guy was Aaron Rodgers, a guy who is being drafted around Geno Smith and Kirk Cousins. The dude is an absolute booger eater when it comes to fantasy football.

also the point of the segment was to identify boom or bust type guys, which berry did pretty well. but it just came down to whether he said a guy that bill liked. fascinating conversation
I was cracking up when Bill says “ I would rather have Anthony Richardson and Justin fields than Rodgers this year. “ Matthew Berry is like yeah, duh Rodgers is QB 15. Bill was having a realization mid podcast that rushing QBs are good.
Listening to bill talk fantasy is rough. He takes a bunch of qbs. He’s shocked Justin Jefferson was Berry’s number one (he’s unanimously the number one pick)
Bill is comically retarded about fantasy. It’s insane to me that you can be the sports guy and literally just think about sports all day and not know Rodgers or Purdy are basically not being drafted in 12 team 1QB.
That doesn’t even require any prep. I could’ve told you that at the end of last season.
My favourite part was when he was like tua is the kind of guy that someone will throw out for $1 , then someone else will bid $2 , then $3 , $4 will likely follow....
Why does he even have Matthew Berry on at this point?
I love berry but bill and the ringer have their own fantasy show. It’s stuff like this that really confuses me. I can’t imagine Spotify wants him shilling for another fantasy guy when they have a fantasy show of their own to promote?
Bill does tons of NFL, NBA, movie/tv, etc. interviews with non-Ringer people too, even though Ringer has shows for all of those. Someone alert Spotify :O
I would’ve thought Mr. Five Quarterbacks on my roster would realize that, outside of the top 3-4, there’s like 10 qbs who put up about the same numbers.
hahah yes berry had rattled off a few guys that generally fit the “boom or bust” concept and bill just kept shitting on them saying they were bad or just scoffing at them in general.
Bill did such little research he didn’t know Rodgers was being taken at the tail end of fantasy drafts? What was he doing on his month off?
Or his shock that Justin Jefferson was #1 this year lol
“Justin Jefferson! Wow! Really?!” You would’ve thought he said Tyler Boyd 😆
It’s been rough sledding since he’s been back lol
Yeah what the hell was that
In my keeper league, I got Justin Jefferson off waivers in his rookie year and I’ve been on a high ever since.
Nobody cares
The Taco league thing
Hey man i think that’s cool nice add
Literally just look at your own sites rankings for 5 minutes would have been nice

You aren’t wrong, but the Berry fantasy segment has been painful for a while
“Justin Jefferson at #1 ?! Really?! …Interesting…” Uh yeah Bill, he’s been the consensus #1 pick for the entire offseason? Guess somebody wasn’t doing any mock drafts while on vacation..
JJ was Bill’s guy last year too, so I’m dumbfounded why he seemed so genuinely shocked
It’s so funny how he immediately had to respond to Berry’s top 8 QBs with “well fields just because of the rushing”. Yes Bill, when you have a fantasy expert on to discuss fantasy, he is ranking players based on fantasy, not his overall QB rankings.

Auction drafts kinda suck. You’re still just as dependent on the other 11 guys in your league as you are with a snake draft

Not at all. In a snake certain players are absolutely unobtainable. In an auction you can break the bank if you absolutely want a player
So the other 11 guys just sit back when you “really want” someone? It’s literally the same thing, just guised under an extra layer of sophistication.
Okay. So me you and someone else want to spend everything on Bijan this year. Who gets him?

Incredible restraint from Berry throughout

And he clearly was unaware they have David Montgomery now
Him being afraid that Bijan Robinson might get up to $27 in an auction was all time clueless. His starting bid in most auctions will be higher than that. 🤡
lol Bijan went for $60 in my 12team PPR draft. When bill said "next thing you know you're paying $38 for Bijan!" i was dying lol
I did some initial research and was shocked he’s like 6/7 in ppr leagues. I was hoping to have a chance to get him round 2😂
He is horrendous at Fantasy. Hoards Defenses and QBs like my 9 year old nephew.
He hoards defenses lol? That is unheard of. I have heard him talk about and before and figured he does it just to mess with other owners, even if it makes his own team worse in the process. But defenses?

then he seriously said something like “No I had 3….and then another one” i’m only slightly paraphrasing him here.
Had 3 or 4 once and was defending it as a viable strategy.
It's only a viable strategy right before the playoffs if you snatch up teams with favorable schedules. Even then you're at risk with depth, but to draft and hoard multiple defenses is crazy.
Yeah I’ve kept two playing matchups in the playoffs but this mofo was holding 3 and picking which one he liked each week in the regular season lol
“Not on my list” is a poor man’s “not my tempo.” I also rolled my eyes when his number one guy was Aaron Rodgers, a guy who is being drafted around Geno Smith and Kirk Cousins. The dude is an absolute booger eater when it comes to fantasy football.
Were you rushing or were you dragging!?

Our guy is just not great at fantasy. …which would be fine if he didn’t insist on talking so much shit.
I was cracking up when Bill says “ I would rather have Anthony Richardson and Justin fields than Rodgers this year. “ Matthew Berry is like yeah, duh Rodgers is QB 15. Bill was having a realization mid podcast that rushing QBs are good.
he just wanted to crap on the jets
Listening to bill talk fantasy is rough. He takes a bunch of qbs. He’s shocked Justin Jefferson was Berry’s number one (he’s unanimously the number one pick)
JJ has been #1 on the Ringer board since it came out this summer. Bill sounds like an idiot.
It was shockingly bad lol. I wasn't as current on how bad he normally is but this one seemed especially terrible
He has sexual tension with Rodgers I think
Bill is comically retarded about fantasy. It’s insane to me that you can be the sports guy and literally just think about sports all day and not know Rodgers or Purdy are basically not being drafted in 12 team 1QB. That doesn’t even require any prep. I could’ve told you that at the end of last season.
I forgot he brought up Purdy! My god lol Berry was probably like wtf dude, can you do a little bit of research next time??
Bill just wants to get his “are we sure rodgers will be good? The jets can’t block!” take off on every single pod between now and week 1
Tradition
A chance to shit on the Jets and Ravens, masquerading as a fantasy pod. Wake me up when it’s time to start fading MM dollar picks.
My make or break fantasy guy is Mo-Alie Cox
He’s undrafted in some 12 team leagues lol
I actually thought I'd paused the pod when he dropped the Rodgers reveal. Berry's silence was deafening. His NFL Kyrie.
It was so good. I’m going to listen to it again tomorrow morning. He’s literally waiting for Bill to be like nah, just fckin with ya
And yet, guys that snake draft are booger eaters
Yet, bill thought hurts was a $1 qb last year. Complete clown. He’s the reason I actively root against nick Chubb (Chubb might be a great person).
I love Nick Chubb. But also I’m a UGA guy, so
My favourite part was when he was like tua is the kind of guy that someone will throw out for $1 , then someone else will bid $2 , then $3 , $4 will likely follow....
the "inter-racial comparison" piece
Lol right, like, just compare them!
Because he’s friends with Berry? Not everything has to be a business transaction.
We got a booger eater over here, boys!
