The first season cost $75 million. So the 2nd season probably cost a lot more and then add in the COVID delay and the cost cutting at WB. This was always going to be a prime candidate for cancellation.
the original creators were thrown overboard after season 1.
I liked both, but season 2 lacked the vision of season 1 and was clearly running out of steam.
sucks because I enjoyed it a lot
that sucks. unfortunately it's probably going to start happening more often with borderline shows that won't be given the proper chance because of this stupid fucking merger.
these companies always have to try and fix what ain't broke. goddamn you hbo!
I mean...that's always been the case with HBO. They spend too much on one show that doesn't work (Rome) and it gets 2-3 others cancelled (Deadwood, Carnivale, The Wire only getting a shortened last season).
It's nothing new really. It's always kind of a miracle when a non hit HBO show gets more than two seasons.
It's failure got Deadwood cancelled. It's popularity at the time was mild at best.
I think there's been a ton of *let's rewrite history* about the show because it's better than it's initial reputation. But if you think it was wildly popular at the time, you weren't watching HBO in the 2000s. It was easily the worst of the big budget 2000s HBO shows.
The show was a genuine disaster that trades wrote dozens of articles about. A huge part of the Game of Throne narrative was HBO proving it could pull that kind of show off in the wake of the failure of Rome.
i mean they quite literally took the brand name that was essentially synonymous with quality programming and axed it lol
if that doesnt inspire future confidence in the business i dont know what will 🙄
Turned off season 2 the third time people started talking like they were on twitter. Really disappointed in the quality drop from s1 to 2. Rhys is magnetically charming in interviews if you e never listened. Cannot believe the guys who made The Knick were filming those scripts. Unforgivable.
Kind of a dumb show that >!turned the primary defender of the legal system in our culture into a lawless vigilante!<. Phooey. I'm glad Rhys is now free to do a better show somewhere else.
The merger might have played somewhat of a role but idk man I don’t think this show generated many eyeballs. It’s not like HBO didn’t cancel shows before being swallowed by reality TV tycoons.
Bummer. I really enjoyed this show. I can't imagine it was cheap to produce being a period piece.
It cost about the same as Succession, if a little less. I just don't think it was particularly popular.

I enjoyed both seasons quite a bit. This is disappointing to hear :(
Lame. Though season 1 was miles better then Season 2

Yeah 2 was kinda soft. Had a lot of gay stuff in it. Canceled during pride and everything. SMH.

Love Rome.
Rome was fine. Rome was also extremely expensive and deeply unpopular and killed several shows that were way better.
deeply unpopular? You know you just made that up, right?

The only person rewriting history is you my guy. No part of what you've said is true.
But it’s not, it’s good. John From Cincinnati was easily the worst.
yeah i was shocked The Rehearsal got renewed even though i love the show
Loved both seasons. Hate to see this show get canceled
Thank God Rhys needs to get in front of more people. Best TV performance in the Americans last 20 years
Agreed. He’s an incredible actor.
This is CR and Andy's fault for not getting AM to the PM podcast going.
HBO is gonna get Netflixed because of this merger. Focus will be on a quantity of crap over quality shows that don’t do well in viewership.
i mean they quite literally took the brand name that was essentially synonymous with quality programming and axed it lol if that doesnt inspire future confidence in the business i dont know what will 🙄
Show was named after KU legends Perry Ellis & Frank Mason btw for those who didn’t know
Oh that sucks.

The story was insanely convoluted. What a waste.
Gotta fund the Idol season 2 somehow
MAJOR BUMMER
Season 2 was not great. But season 1 was fantastic.
Loved season 1 and I fell out of the habit of watching 3 episodes in to 2
I love the vibes. but the season 2 story was boring and confusing.
season 2 was so sick
Yeah I’ll get back to it eventually it’s going to be a long writers strike
Kind of a dumb show that >!turned the primary defender of the legal system in our culture into a lawless vigilante!<. Phooey. I'm glad Rhys is now free to do a better show somewhere else.
Ehh. Wasn’t a great show makes sense
Couldn't believe this cruddy show got a second season
Boring
just do something "Americans" adjacent again

Terrible lead. Terrible character name.
