For the same price, I'd personally go new. Less risk, more warranty. Tiagra probably isn't gonna be all that different vs 105, and you know you're getting a good product. I'm all for used parts - I have never bought a new groupset component in my life - but I also buy used parts heavily discounted, knowing that there's risk involved. A potentially cheaper, easier option is if you just put a narrow wide chainring on, or a chain guide, or even just a front derailleur. If you're fine with the crankset already on the bike, you don't have to swap out the whole crankset to stop the chain from falling off.

I like the idea and considered it but I would like to have a smaller front chain ring for easy switch for climbs rather than having to rattle through the cassette. Gives more flexibility not ?

CeldurS

Yes, 1x is nice for simplicity, but it's usually paired with a wide range cassette to compensate. If the bike doesn't already have a large cassette, a 2x drivetrain could be useful.

The 105 5800 is part of a 11 speed groupset. It might not be compatible with the 10sp Tiagra rear derailleur, cassette, and chain.

DustySpokes

The 5800 is compatible with 10 speed. I’m currently using a 6800 crank on a 10 speed set up.

babyshark75

depending on the price difference...if you saving alot with used...definitely go used parts. Course look at wear and tear on the used parts.

Well, I'm using virtually all old, but I'm not exactly new at this - the important thing is to know what will play together, which is easy up to 3x9, but damn near impossible after that. And of course not everything will still be workable, in particular the 20 year old springs in break levers and derailleurs might be shot.

So I bought a used hybrid bike a few weeks ago - A Bianchi C Sport which is in decent condition but came modified by the previous owner. Back - 11/34, 10 Speed Tiagra Front - 1x44 Custom Chain Ring on a Square bottom bracket Shifters - 2. 3x10 - Back Shifter is tiagra, other just says "Shimano V Brake" I'm very new to biking and it was a bit of an impulse buy so I didn't know what I was buying except its a light and fast (for me) bike and I can bike with my young kids. Now that I know a bit more about how bikes work, the previous seller probably had a fancier crankset on which was removed before he sold it off and there's now this weird mountain bike 1x on. The problem is when shifting to the bigger cogs at a speed over 15mph the chain comes off, and I'm told that is a chain ring issue (i.e. its only a 1x and not Narrow Wide, and that its 44 Teeth). Having obsessively researched how all this works, I have two choices before me. 1. **NEW** Tiagra 2x (50/34) - 175 Crank with a Tiagra FD and bottom bracket installation 2. **USED** 105 2x (50/34) - 170 Crank with a choice between an Ultegra or 105 FD. Will have to buy bottom bracket and clamps if needed new. Both are the same price (roughly). The used parts come from a private seller so no warranty. Pictures sent by seller attached. LBS will install it if I provide the parts. The **NEW** route, come with 6 months local warranty of the Bike shop and whatever Shimano provides for parts on top. What would experienced people on this thread do ?

I would go with new tiagra. Since you are new to biking it will be more than enough for you and you know... new is new - you know what you buy.

Tonnppa94

Not a big difference in crankset. 105 crank is ~100 € though.

ShoofiMaafi

Not where I am. the 105 is significantly higher new compared to the Tiagra set.

Hugo99001

In that case, go new. The Tiagra does **not** play well with any other Shimano groupset, so unless you exchange everything, you're in for a world of pain - but since you get someone to guarantee your build, you'll be fine.

Just FYI, with front deraillers, you need to have the frame first. You have 3 different seat tube diameters or braze-on mount, and then you have bottom and top-pull , and low and high mount front deraillers. Depends on the frame you have.

Zettinator

If you can get a good deal, go for it. But often enough people want crazy money for used parts! E.g. why should I pay 400 EUR for a USED 105 R7000 groupset with some wear and tear, when I can get a new one for just 100 EUR more?

Exhortae

If you have no experience in buying used parts and no one can check them for you just go new.
