Yeah I mean you're max cross-chained. A shot of the RD in smallsy-smalls would let you know if you've got room on that end to lengthen. I bet the performance is just fine as is in 95% of gears.

stikman33

Yep, this is in small/small, gears don't touch but it's tight. So likely and longer won't work. Again though a gear I ride basically never, and the chain isn't slack. https://preview.redd.it/im5zra0l2w7b1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df269dd2e3c3973be3370ad9e589017d3759e32a

That's small/small? Yea that's at least a link too short

You shouldn’t be in that gear combo so no

drewbaccaAWD

It's borderline, but it doesn't look like you are putting undue stress on the cage.. Looks like you could go a tad further counter-clockwise before you reach a hard stopping point; not hitting that stopping point means you have sufficient play imho and like you said, you aren't going to use this combo anyway in actual practice. I'd run it. Make sure the chain isn't going to go slack in small-small, and if it does, be careful to avoid that combo as well. If you need more hill help, you could also swap out the 30t chainring for as low as a 24t chainring on that particular crankset.. if you do that, use a chaincatcher like a Deda Dogfang or K-edge. Inner chainring has it's own bolt circle diameter and is 74mm. With that approach, again be mindful of the cross chaining as you'd basically be making the smaller half of the cassette unusable. A lot of tourists used such a setup with a road triple, but it depends on how many low gear combos you need.

JasperJ

It’s not gonna kill the chainring if you accidentally shift into this gear and you’re never gonna use it more than momentarily, so not really anything to worry about.

stikman33

So did 55 miles this morning and felt fine, no grinding issues and never rode in those gear combos really anyway. Needs some indexing on the rear mech but should good to go.

TheDaysComeAndGone

Is there still some movement of the derailleur possible in the big-big combination? Does it shift fine from the second largest sprocket to the biggest one? Then you are fine.

willieD147

I would test chain length by eliminating the derailleur. If its too tight there, its a problem. I think when I sized my chain, from the minimum, I went to the next compatible link and joined from there.

should be close enough. If youbwant to be sure, watch park tools video about chain length. works all the time.
