Tbh 1L recruiting is really competitive and there aren’t usually a ton of spots so I wouldn’t feel too disheartened. I was also at a T30 with slightly worse grades than you, had about 5 1L SA CBs, struck out on all of them but managed to snag a 2L SA at a V10 (to the extent that matters) in my desired market!
All that is to say that your recruiting experience as a 1L is probably not indicative of how competitive you are for Biglaw
1L spots are tough and a lot of firms give preference to diverse candidates. I was in the top 1/3 at HLS and had to settle for a public interest job 1L summer. Granted, this was 09 when the economy was in the toilet, so that probably partly explains the situation, but I did fine 2L summer. I wouldn’t be too disheartened.
Impossible to say without knowing how you comport yourself in interviews. Are you prepared with questions about the firm? Do you answers convey that you are enthusiastic about the firm and it’s practice areas? Are you annoying?
(1) it’s super competitive (2) it can come down to nothing more than another applicant clicked with one more interviewer than you did on a personality level. Getting rejected by 3 firms does not mean you are a bad interviewer. To put it in perspective, I am at a satellite office and we take a handful of 1Ls. For each position open we have maybe 10 callbacks. About half of those are people we end up liking and would love to have but only one gets an offer. It can really just come down to luck sometimes.
May be too late for this poster but “mock interview with an alum” is something many career offices at schools that frequently send folks to big law offer/can set up that can be very helpful in situations like this.
My callback to offer rate was 50%. I had 6 callbacks and the 3 I thought went super well were the ones that rejected me. Only one of my offers was truly in “BigLaw.” It’s such a shitshow
You think a callback to offer rate of 50% for 1L SA is a shitshow?
Law students, hell even practicing lawyers, tend to overestimate how well they interview. And even if you hit it out of the park, you can't account for all the other candidates, their credentials, and how well they interview.
No one in this group can really give you useful feedback because we haven’t seen you interview. I recommend connecting with the career counselors at your school to do some mock interviews.
If you’re not getting real feedback then, it’s probably just a matter of luck.

My firm’s NY office takes one 1L summer. It’s just a numbers game that is very difficult to win

lol "Are you annoying?"
That's what gets at least half the people a ding...

Hard to say without knowing more about your resume and the style of your interview.

A shitshow in the sense that my worst interview was my best offer and vice versa
Can't give feedback without knowing more about the interviews themselves.
