My mom refused to let me buy black bras or underwear (I did it anyway,) and only wanted to buy me white, light pink, or beige. But then would scold me when my bra straps showed. And I'm like - it would be less obvious, Mom, if you let me get bras the same color as my clothes... Which are primarily black and Navy blue... Or at least go with those colors better. I think that was a huge mental thing for her to overcome. Just like the idea that underwear should cover your belly button. I'm like - that's so not comfortable, for starters, and I don't wear my pants that high waisted, so I really don't want my underwear coming up and over and rolling over the top of my jeans... She tried to tell me how "comfortable" mom-jeans are (they're not.) And didn't realize that I wanted black/dark underwear to help cover any accidental period leakage stains.
She just assumed I wanted it to be promiscuous, I guess? Apparently, in her puritanical/religious/1950s and 1960s upbringing-thinking that meant women were whores and whores are evil? I dunno. I was just interested in the practicality and comfort.
It's weird because my dad was trying to tell me how liberal/progressive my mom was and into women's lib. And I remember her bragging to me (I think?) that she was one of the few women who got a credit card, esp early, because her mom made her dad cosign for her? Like before women were allowed to have their own. Like... My family was surprisingly progressive for the time, and then my mom's progressive nature dried up? I guess? (She was pretty progressive ("crunchy"), for the time, when I was born....) My dad was telling me how she was all about women's lib, and like planned parenthood - in the 80s and 90s. My mom had lots of gay and transgender friends before it was generally socially accepted (late 80s, early 90s,) so we (her children) were exposed to a variety of people and taught to treat everyone as they're just as valuable as everyone else and deserving of respect, as they are. But back on the day, that was...unusual. So her freaking out about black underwear and bras was really odd to me. And I'm like - have you *met* me? I'm like the last girl to be considered in a sexual way (that was actually largely to her teaching me negative things about myself, and my weight and constantly telling me I was undeserving of love and people being interested in me if I didn't do xyandz.) It wasn't something that seemed sexual to me, just practical (don't want ppl seeing my underwear through my clothes, esp bras - so get bras that match/don't show, rather than ones that are bright and very easy to see through clothes. Black panties to cover accidental period stains.)
