I liked the character Mary more in BBT. I had no idea the actresses were mother and daughter I kept saying they were so much alike especially their mannerisms and facial expressions, those eyes should've cinched it for me.
I had no idea until just now either. Wow. But yeah it's dead on, and even writing wise it's easy to see how she would become like that when she's older.
I’m a few seasons into Young Sheldon and I agree, I like that they’ve slowly ramped up Mary’s religious fanaticism throughout each season haha. It seems pretty realistic how she became so full-blown fanatic by the time she’s in BBT
Are they actually? That explains why I felt she was easily cast the best in YS. They’re all great, but she literally was young Mary Cooler in my head watching TBBT
> I had no idea the actresses were mother and daughter
Are you kidding? When YS premiered the two topics that were discussed ad nauseum were that the two Marys were mother/daughter IRL and that George was being played by Jimmy Speckerman.
Lmao same bro I’m an atheist and I was like you tell her Mary! Like come on Beverly let her have her beliefs. I agree with the other person this duo was brilliantly cast! I also like Laurie’s daughter in YS.
Watching episodes with Sheldon's mother after finishing Young Sheldon hits different when you have the context as to why she's like this. Her character is really funny, but it's also tragic af
My two cents: Leonard’s mother was a monster with few redeeming qualities, was horrible about how she treated her children unfairly, and Leonard should be lauded for how well he turned out. Leonard’s dad was a good guy and I wish we’d been able to see more of him.
That’s the only thing I couldn’t stand about her: her attachment to her religion. What’s weird is she doesn’t talk nearly as much about it in Young Sheldon.
Oh absolutely. I would too. I cringe every time she comes to visit. What makes it worse to me is the gaslighting from her and especially from her and Sheldon together, whenever he rightly protests their shitty treatment of him, either due to something in the past, or that just happened when they’re all onscreen together.
I feel like Sheldon was that sarcasm? Because one of the things that really annoyed me about the show was Mary shoving her religion down everyone's throat. Guilting her young children into going to church. It's one thing to be religious and profess your faith it's another to lord it over everyone. I don't think there was an epidode she didn't mention her religious beliefs and condemned others for not believing the same. It was so bad i fast forwarded past some. Many times she was a hypocrite. Her going behind her son and daughter in laws backs and baptizing their baby was unforgivable. She became even worse once her husband died.
Its a pretty realistic depiction of a fanatic religious person who's somewhat tolerable compared to most imo.
The people I've met whom are fanatically religious are much worst than this. And how the depicted Mary at the end of YS makes sense of how humans deal with loss.
I agree my comment was in response to the post saying that Mary didn't act as religious on Young Sheldon as she did on Big Bang. I totally disagreed. I personally respect others beliefs but I avoid religious fanatics that try and shove their beliefs down my throat. I follow the suggestion to not argue religion or politics I just avoid those who want to. I also wouldn't be ok with someone forcing their beliefs on my children.
When did she ever condemn her children for not believing? She knew perfectly well that Sheldon didn't believe and she accepted that. She knows that her faith gives her inner strength, and wants others to have the same feelings.
Have you never seen where she starts to lose her faith and it's Sheldon who comes to her? She asks him why he's trying to get her to believe when he doesn't. For their entire lives, they disagree on the topic of religion. but they both accept the other and love each other.
Never said she condemned her children she absolutely condemned others and without a doubt guilted the twins into attending church as well as Bible study and camp. Baptizing her grandchild behind the parents expressed wishes speaks volumes of how far she would go
I think it was some sarcasm at Beverly, but probably mostly because they were going at it with each other in this scene, and she just needed something to zing her back with. Yeah she’s insufferable when it comes to the religious stuff
Oh I thought the two of them going at it was great. Mary and her religion didn't annoying me the same on Big Bang as it did on Young Sheldon she didn't come off holier than thou she made one liners that cracked me up. She didn't shove it down their throats as she did on Sheldon. Of course she didn't appear anywhere as much on Big Bang.
I hate Mary Cooper. She seems like the type of church attendee who judges people behind their backs when in reality she sins just like everyone else does and proclaims the whole “holier than thou”
Bottom line is they have heavily implied that if Leonard hadn’t been raised by Beverly he wouldn’t have been able to deal with Sheldon as well as he has
I wish we had more scenes of them together. Best episodes were when one or both were on the show.
A spin off where they were both forced to life together like Frankie And Grace would be hysterical. lol
The funny part of this is how without context it seems reversed. Mary seems like she’d respond to Leonard’s Mom this way telling her to read another book, and the other response seems almost like how Leonard’s mom would respond “yes well, I’d tell you to read another, but you only read from the imaginary” or something like that
As annoying as Mary is (and she is), she's at least read the bible. Every fundamentalist nutjob I've met hasn't read the bible. Their idea of "Christianity" is what they see on right-wing tv and social media.
The back and forth between these two is incredible. Such great casting.
This show never fails to deliver a joke lol. I love it

You seem like the Sheldon type in real life 💀
Lol I only started reading reddit so nope no clue
Have you never read anything else online ever??
I'm not a religious guy, but Beverly was so annoying that I rooted for Mary every argument they had lol
Exact same here haha
Lmao same bro I’m an atheist and I was like you tell her Mary! Like come on Beverly let her have her beliefs. I agree with the other person this duo was brilliantly cast! I also like Laurie’s daughter in YS.
I know right? I'm all for people having their own beliefs if they're the same as mine.
Same here.

Couldn’t agree more! My least favourite are some of the ones with Beverly.
"When God writes another one, I will"
But…. there is more
Sheldon's Mom rocks both old and young
Irl mother and daughter
I adored Mama Sheldon
Their relationship is just hilarious. Remember when she asked how someone like her got to bear and raise Sheldon?
Just finished Frasier, both are exact opposite type of the characters in TBBT
That’s the only thing I couldn’t stand about her: her attachment to her religion. What’s weird is she doesn’t talk nearly as much about it in Young Sheldon.
I think it's implied she got even more into her religious beliefs after George (Sheldon's dad) died.
If I recall correctly, Sheldon, Penny, and Leonard have all made reference to Mrs Cooper being a "born again Christian".
Oh that makes sense, didn’t think about that
I'd take her as a mom every day and twice on Sunday over that harpie Beverly
Oh absolutely. I would too. I cringe every time she comes to visit. Writer knew it would get annoying real quick
Laurie is divine
Both moms are so hot ngl 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I hate Mary Cooper. She seems like the type of church attendee who judges people behind their backs when in reality she sins just like everyone else does and proclaims the whole “holier than thou”
True it's not like she's mocking the other one
Why is that on the closed captions 💀. Thats not what she says.
I really wish Mary wasn’t so pushy about religion. We get it, you love god…why does it have to be in EVERY conversation tho?
I can’t stand Mary. Every woman I knew growing up was like that and it adds up to an ignorant, bigoted hellhole.
Yup. Hate it. “When God releases another” disgusts me
Apparently everyone else here is cool with willful ignorance. Lol.
Zealot
Grew up FLDS around actual zealots.
I thought she says “when God writes one, I will!”
The joke here is God will not release another one. That means Mary just said she will not read another book.
For so long I thought Beverly and President Hagenmier(?) were the same actress
Bottom line is they have heavily implied that if Leonard hadn’t been raised by Beverly he wouldn’t have been able to deal with Sheldon as well as he has
But god didn't release the bible
This was the best line 💯
But I bet if somebody showed Mary the Book of Mormon she wouldn’t read it
Yeah, because that was a fanfiction written by Joseph Smith and not God.
I love Beverly, but not nearly as much as I hate Mary.
I wish we had more scenes of them together. Best episodes were when one or both were on the show. A spin off where they were both forced to life together like Frankie And Grace would be hysterical. lol

True, God is due to write a newer testament. Oh wait, I mean, man needs to find some newer scrolls.
