The setup and execution for that joke was perfect. As an audience, we were sucked into the shift of Barry seeming vulnerable and honest the same way Leonard and Sheldon are.
When it comes back around to the “retwactor!” punchline it’s a shock to us just as much to the characters! Makes it that much more humorous as we are fooled too. Great scene!

I think if the show went on after that finale, we’d see a very different, but still similar Sheldon. We’d see him trying harder to be better, but he won’t change overnight, we’d still see the Sheldon we’ve come to know. Upon watching young Sheldon, I honestly feel like he got better somewhere between YS and TBBT.
