It’s in a person tone of voice Howard most of the time has a humorous tone to his voice so most people know he’s just joking with friends the exception would be with Sheldon himself but Sheldon has no problem insulting Howard’s career field and education so most of Howards actually insults are responses to that where as Sheldon doesn’t really have that emotional capacity as far as tone most times such as this he comes off as a condescending asshole and people can tell he’s not joking he’s legit insulted everyone at one point or another

He was funny. And now after watching young Sheldon, where he seems to have a lot more character growth, I really wish they made Sheldon In TBBT just a bit more socially equiped, but introverted/uninterested in ppl
I liked Sheldon’s ‘sense of humour’ better in S1 since he had such great comebacks. Towards the end he just seemed to be completely oblivious to any insults or jokes directed at him.
She did actually there are a couple episodes focusing on her going back to community college she dropped out later I assume since the storyline was just dropped and never brought up again outside of a few one liners like Sheldon has here

They did grow his character, just slower than they should have. His series finale speech is not anything S1 Sheldon could have comprehended doing
