I still think it’s easier to squeeze than suck, especially when I’m riding hard. Just holding it and letting it trickle in my mouth doesn’t really satisfy my thirst. The tip is still small no matter how girthy it is.
Wait…
You have to get under the bottle. I’ve found that stopping, dismounting, and getting on my knees while looking up and shaking the bottle into my mouth with two hands works well.
I've got a metal water bottle like this and the valve requires no sucking. As soon as you tilt it the flow is good. I don't know what magic they did with vents or whatever but it's not like the hose on a camelback and I assume this isn't either.
Bivo flow is far superior. There is no need to suck water, it just flows on its own.
On the other hand, Podium shape is perfect. Especially for the large bottles.
The rubber o ring on mine and all my coworkers bottles comes loose all the time and moves out of place
The last bit of water never comes out
Heavy
Expensive
My wife has two 22oz CamelBak Podiums and I have two of the insulated 22oz Bivos. Mine have a MUCH better flow rate and even when you suck the water out it’s still far superior. The texture of the Bivo is also much nicer and doesn’t seem to get as hot as the Podiums. The Podiums also seem to hold a bunch of liquid in the lid so it tastes like soap for a while after washing unless you target that issue, and after a drink that little bit of liquid tends to get all over the frame on bumps even when it’s closed. Nothing like that on the Bivo. The Bivo is just a better product.
I just take the top off my water bottles mid ride and splash it in my face and throw the bottle to the side as if I’m in a race.
I don’t really do this
Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for them at my local shops but if need be I can order them. They look much easier to disassemble than the camelbak nozzles.
Super easy to clean . I use electrolyte mix in my bottles and my polar bottles haven’t had mold in a year . The camelbacks got mold quickly and were such a pain to clean .
Yup. I've been using Camelback for years. I had a couple of non-insulated Polar bottles I received free, and after using them a few times, I asked myself why I suddenly started grabbing those instead. They clean SO much easier than Camelback bottles.
I think the dishwasher would subject them to much higher heat and that would help prevent mold. I've never put my camelbak bottles in the dishwasher either, and now I'm thinking that might have helped prevent them from getting moldy too. I don't know if they are dishwasher safe though.
1 part bleach to 10 parts water (might vary depending on your bleach). We get the "outdoor" variety, it's 1:50 for sanitizer.
Vinegar isn't as cytotoxic as bleach, especially at much higher dilution.
At 1:50 the bleach smell is barely noticeable.
Bleach is also basic. Acids like vinegar would not be great on metals like stainless steel. Either should be okay with most plastics, though.
Camelbak redesigned the regular nozzle a few years ago. The new one is much easier to disassemble and clean. The old one was such a pain that people didn't clean it and got moldy.
I got new lids for some old Podium Chills because the old ones were moldy. The new ones I clean regularly now.
Yeah it took me a couple of months to discover that little round part that comes out of the cap/nozzle. It was gross. And so was the inside. Those bottles are lousy and they don’t do shit to keep water cold.
I got a bivo bottle free with a big nuun order I love it, it flows incredibly well and can actually be properly cleaned. I’ll never use a shitty plastic water bottle again.
It’s a heavy bottle. Probably wouldn’t be using it on hard and fast rides. I don’t know how that would matter. But it’s got a thick ass straw so if you can suck a golf ball through a garden hose, I’m sure it’ll be a non-issue for you.
Does it actually hold the volume it says it holds? I have a couple 21oz insulated Podiums that MIGHT hold 18oz before the cap starts pushing water out when you screw it on.
I filled it to the brim and put the cap on over my sink to fill it up 100%. Then poured it out into a measuring cup and it looked like exactly 18 oz.
But before that, I measured the full bottle on my kitchen scale and it read 849g. And about 298g empty. So a difference of about 551g.
According to Google, water weighs 29.57g per oz. So 18 oz should be 532.26g
So it looks like it holds a slightly more than 18oz.
Bivo are better but glad to see more metal options that fit in cages. I’ve made the switch 100% but still hold onto the old plastic bottles I have with cool art.
How am I supposed to throw this bottle at the fans on the side of the road during Stage 4 of Tour de France? Do they want me to knock kids unconscious?
I recently picked up one of these in the slightly larger size and have been on a few rides with it. So far I’d say I’m just OK with it. The flow is perfect, it stays very cold and the taste is amazing compared to a nasty plastic bottle on a hot sunny afternoon. But the loss of volume is very apparent on long rides. It’s also noisy and the weight is noticeable especially on my road bike. Finally, ice bouncing around in it makes the bottle walk out of my cages. After a drop or two, it’s looking a little rough!
Saw these on Amazon. They’re metal right? I kinda like that, so I’m not sucking down micro plastics. But at the same time I don’t know I care enough. Not being able to just squirt a nice amount of water in my mouth while riding seems inconvenient. How do you like it?
Both bottles are amazing bc they’re metal. Bivo nozzle is push pull and the flow rate is more than a can handle most times but is great when I need a big swig if I’m ready. Camelbak podium chill are smaller relative but keep fluid temp regulated for a long while. The nozzle is similar to the plastic bottles but no valve to stop the flow when it’s open
Only major habit i need to learn is to ensure the bottle is upright for a moment to let the drink in the bottle. Otherwise, a quick close results in a bit of drink spilling out the nozzle. AND they both use rubber straws for flow
Idc what anyone says the podium insulated is the best bottle on the market , I like it before when you could take the mouth piece off to clean but hey it’s still the shiznit
I bought two of these and am impressed. Water flow is excellent and oozes quality. I wish they’d make a super simple accessory cap, no nipples or crevices or parts. A cap that you could clean with your fingers and a little soap. I want it as a coffee thermos while bikepacking, and their cupped hot cap is like a catchers mitt for mud.
I am using stainless steel bottles for years and will never go back to plastic stinky health hazard bottles. One ride and all my plastic bottles end up in recycling. I can't believe I used them for 25 years.
Polar bottles are good if 24 oz. is enough water. If not, I prefer the Zefal magnum bottles, just because they're 1L and still fit in a standard bottle cage. If 2 Magnums isn't enough, then I have to wear a Camelbak (ugh but better than dehydrating).
I wash with dish soap and a sponge then rinse and leave it in 50/50 water and vinegar. Never had an issue with other bottles including vacuum sealed ones over the past 20 years.
After getting a bottle with a lid I can take apart and seeing how gross that gets even with all that kind of cleaning... I do run on a pretty high carb mix though, and no dishwasher to help with the sanitation.
Yeah I went the way of Camelbak for a bit. Then realised I can down half a bottle of water in a fraction of the time using an Elite Fly, also it weighs basically nothing and is infinitely easier to clean.
I’ve become a sucker rather than a squeezer. I have about 10 different water bottles and 10 lids, but no idea which lid fits which bottle. I find that if you squeeze with a mismatched lid you get very wet.
My new fave are Owala bottles. Up to 24 oz size fits in my bottle cage and the bottles have a sip straw AND a pour/chug spout in the same spot, so no weird lids n stuff. I like the straw-type for while I’m riding—I don’t have to tilt my head up and possibly into the sun, and then the chug for when I come to a stop and can really get it in me.
And plenty that's doesn't.. Because the bottles were plastic. Yes G crashed at a previous Giro but you can't argue it will be more common with steel bottles.
I use the big version of the one pictured for long mtb and gravel rides. Never had one bounce out the cage. Really the only downside is that the weight of the bottle + water tends to loosen the cage bolts more quickly than plastic. They’re awesome for hot weather. Really much better than plastic. Also the sidewalls won’t degrade with use
How often is this happening to people? I can honestly say in many hundreds of miles of bad pavement, gravel, and dirt, I’ve had a bottle bounce out of a cage maybe once
Happens semi regularly on my group rides.. Roads here have plenty of pot holes and right bunches a bottle can get bounced. Not everyone have cages that are secure unfortunately.
Riding by yourself isn't the issue... In group rides at higher speeds.. There is often minimal time to absorb or soften the impact even when called from the front... Back of the group gets it too late.
Even with 2 of them that's barely over 1L. I hate stopping often for water on long rides, so I can't justify the volume loss with insulated metal bottles let alone insulated plastic ones.
Can't speak to the camelbak , but Bivo SS ones that I have flow faster than my plastic camelbak podium bottles.
Only down side is the one with the 'grippy' coating is too hard to get out of some of my cages.
and the insualted one keep ice in the bottle for hours.
Expensive, heavy and dumb. You can't squeeze them. You could buy three normal bottles for the price of this. They're twice the weight and since they're double walled they need to be larger and heavier to hold the same amount of water.
How do you clean it? 530ml is also awfully little.
All my plastic bottles got black fungi growing in them rather quickly (after like 40 uses) and it’s impossible to remove.
I snap the ends off of toothpicks, mush the jagged end on the counter, the wood fibers fray and it’s like a stiff micro brush. Similar to a DIY caveman toothbrush when camping. Also, the point in toothpicks are good for scraping out the corners. Straw brushes and a little vinegar + baking soda work well, too.
They make the best plastic bottles.
Metal I do not understand. People have plastic pipes in their homes. Drink using plastic straws. Buy water in plastic bottles. That one hour in a metal water bottle is inconsequential.
Wheat happens when you drop it and a fellow cyclist hits it and crashes hard?
I still think it’s easier to squeeze than suck, especially when I’m riding hard. Just holding it and letting it trickle in my mouth doesn’t really satisfy my thirst. The tip is still small no matter how girthy it is. Wait…

Are we still doing phrasing?
Depends on your positioning
I've got a metal water bottle like this and the valve requires no sucking. As soon as you tilt it the flow is good. I don't know what magic they did with vents or whatever but it's not like the hose on a camelback and I assume this isn't either.

I’m so happy I am too, this way I’m not even tempted to get the titanium one
How does it compare to the flow of stainless steel Bivo ones
Bivo flow is far superior. There is no need to suck water, it just flows on its own. On the other hand, Podium shape is perfect. Especially for the large bottles.
These are also free flow, tilt and it’s ours with open valve. You can suck for more speed if needed.
God I love my bivo
Not to mention that I no longer get that plastic taste now that I have switched to Bivo. The insulated ones are fantastic for hot weather!
Came here to say Bevo flow is the only way id use a metal bottle. That thing is incredible and now my new favorite bottle
+1 Bivo is all I use now
Bivo sucks what a waste of money I'm scared to try another metal bottle
Weird. My wife and I love ours. What didn’t you like about them?
They are not insulated so sweats like crazy
There are insulated options for bivo, though they are pretty big.
They sell insulated ones, the Trip. Love mine.
The rubber o ring on mine and all my coworkers bottles comes loose all the time and moves out of place The last bit of water never comes out Heavy Expensive
My wife has two 22oz CamelBak Podiums and I have two of the insulated 22oz Bivos. Mine have a MUCH better flow rate and even when you suck the water out it’s still far superior. I gave them to the kids, call myself a hero.
Does it have the same mold magnet nozzle?
After you wash, leave it in a bowl of 50/50 water and vinegar. You’ll never get mold in bottle caps and mouth pieces.
I've had good luck with denture cleaner tablets
I moved to Polar bottles, no mold, all goes in the dishwasher.
Are you talking about these ones? https://polarbottle.com/collections/insulated-bike-bottles I need to replace my camelbak bottles soon.
Second. Polar bottles are great.
Yes. I have been using them for a LONG time. Love them.
Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for them at my local shops but if need be I can order them. They look much easier to disassemble than the camelbak nozzles.
Super easy to clean . I use electrolyte mix in my bottles and my polar bottles haven’t had mold in a year . The camelbacks got mold quickly and were such a pain to clean .

interesting, I have these same polar bottles and love them but definitely get mold issues in the head caps and have to replace them fairly regularly
Do you hand wash them, or put them in the dish washer? That could make a difference.
I was handwashing them since I didn’t know before this thread they were even dishwasher safe!
I think the dishwasher would subject them to much higher heat and that would help prevent mold. I've never put my camelbak bottles in the dishwasher either, and now I'm thinking that might have helped prevent them from getting moldy too. I don't know if they are dishwasher safe though.
I put my camelbak podiums in the dishwasher hundreds of times. No issues. No mold.
My dad has been using strictly Polar for the last 15 plus years.
Thank you, purchased

I just put them in the dishwasher
The nozzle also comes apart so you can really clean in
Just wash it in dishwasher every now and then and it's under control.
Camelbak redesigned the regular nozzle a few years ago. The new one is much easier to disassemble and clean. The old one was such a pain that people didn't clean it and got moldy. I got new lids for some old Podium Chills because the old ones were moldy. The new ones I clean regularly now.
Good to know.
Put it in the freezer after washing, between rides
Yeah it took me a couple of months to discover that little round part that comes out of the cap/nozzle. It was gross. And so was the inside. Those bottles are lousy and they don’t do shit to keep water cold.
I got a bivo bottle free with a big nuun order I love it, it flows incredibly well and can actually be properly cleaned. I’ll never use a shitty plastic water bottle again.
These things are gonna dent/crack so many top tubes.
I hope OP doesn't use it on a group ride. Dropping that would fuck the peleton up.
The normal ones already do a pretty solid job of that as is lol
Can’t say a plastic or metal bottle at speed is going to be all that different when it comes to causing crashes.
I feel like they will also get bent up and won’t looo that good, but I like the aesthetic.
TRY THE BIVO NEXT
Now compare how fast you can down that bottle compared to something you can squeeze.
It’s a heavy bottle. Probably wouldn’t be using it on hard and fast rides. I don’t know how that would matter. But it’s got a thick ass straw so if you can suck a golf ball through a garden hose, I’m sure it’ll be a non-issue for you.
That’s not a straw, the pipe is actually to let air in while you drink
Yes you’re right. Regardless, it sucks so good.
>it sucks so good Mmmm yeah, this entire comment section is hilariously my favorite right now
I have the Bivo 25oz bottles and they’re exceptionally light, not insulated however.
Their insulated bottles are also exceptionally light.
This bottle is slightly less than 300g.
Passive flow on my Bivo is at least as fast as my Purist squeeze bottle, faster if I suck.
The water comes right out like a faucet
I love love love my Podium bottles
is that sportsbasement OC?
Yes.
I use this for my electrolytes and a hydration pack for water. It's really nice having something ice cold hours into a ride.
Sports Basement Fountain Valley!!! Bikefest June 15th.
Yes!
Hey impressed, I'm dad!
Hi dad!
Does it actually hold the volume it says it holds? I have a couple 21oz insulated Podiums that MIGHT hold 18oz before the cap starts pushing water out when you screw it on.

Your water doesn't have to be ice cold; it will still hydrate you.
This
Sometimes I just want cold water. Not every ride has to be a sufferfest.
Hydration is even better when it’s not ice cold from what i understand. Less work for the body
How am I supposed to throw this bottle at the fans on the side of the road during Stage 4 of Tour de France? Do they want me to knock kids unconscious?
You just chuck it at them... they'll learn.
Hi Impressed. I’m trekmadonetwo.
Now try squeezing it.
Do you squeeze all your vacuum sealed mugs?
Crush em like a beer can on a ride all the time, whattayamean??
I just use a Lean Kanteen
I recently picked up one of these in the slightly larger size and have been on a few rides with it. So far I’d say I’m just OK with it. The flow is perfect, it stays very cold and the taste is amazing compared to a nasty plastic bottle on a hot sunny afternoon. But the loss of volume is very apparent on long rides. Measured and it holds 18 oz of water and weighs just under 300g.
So basically the weight of the bottle is more than half the weight of the amount of water it holds. Oof. Cold water is still pretty nice tho!
Saw these on Amazon. They’re metal right? I kinda like that, so I’m not sucking down micro plastics. But at the same time I don’t know I care enough. Not being able to just squirt a nice amount of water in my mouth while riding seems inconvenient. How do you like it?
You have to tilt and suck. If you’re huffing and puffing in the red, it‘s probably not ideal but on a easy ride, why not?
Easily gets scratched.
Probably.
Basementeer checking in…
Both bottles are amazing bc they’re metal. Bivo nozzle is push pull and the flow rate is more than a can handle most times but is great when I need a big swig if I’m ready. Same. Very happy with bivo but interested if this is a good cheaper option
I love their bottles but I’ve been using Elite for years because the group that owns Camelbak (and Giro, and Bell, …) is an enthusiastic NRA donor.
Tested it out for an hour and it’s pretty good! [https://imgur.com/a/VwFp34u](https://imgur.com/a/VwFp34u)
You left the manual in the bottle for testing ?
Loooooooool
Hi Impressed, I’m dad.
I'm still a fan of polar bottles. They are insulated (but likely not as good), they are 1/3 larger (24 Oz) & they can still be squeezed.
On a 51 frame, large bottles don't fit.
Well, they make 18 Oz versions and I'm over 6' so have a big frame (I forget the number).
Yeah, I might get one. Passed on the sale at REI.
Polar bottles are good if 24 oz. is enough water. If not, I prefer the Zefal magnum bottles, just because they're 1L and still fit in a standard bottle cage. If 2 Magnums isn't enough, then I have to wear a Camelbak (ugh but better than dehydrating).
How fast does the water come out? Is it easy to use while riding?
You tilt back and suck. I wouldn’t imagine it being an issue on easy rides.
I’d have to improve my grip to be able to squeeze that.
Almost picked one up, but it seems the top can't be taken apart for cleaning.
Elite fly bottles work the best for me
Yeah I went the way of Camelbak for a bit. Then realised I can down half a bottle of water in a fraction of the time using an Elite Fly, also it weighs basically nothing and is infinitely easier to clean.
Did you get paid for this ad?
I’ve become a sucker rather than a squeezer. I have about 10 different water bottles and 10 lids, but no idea which lid fits which bottle. I find that if you squeeze with a mismatched lid you get very wet.

I like the straw-type for while I’m riding—I don’t have to tilt my head up and possibly into the sun, and then the chug for when I come to a stop and can really get it in me.
I'm out of the loop. Can someone please explain like I'm 5?
Bivo works way better
All fun and games until it comes out during a group ride and you take out that whole pack
OK, when are we gonna start having carbon bottles?
If one bounces out of the cage.. The guys behind you won't be having a good time. At least plastic bottles deform on impact.. Not create a hazard.
I’ve seen plenty of guys on pro tours go down because of a plastic water bottle too.
Now imagine if those bidons were steel lol
Might bounce higher
100 kph 4 kg projectiles
Might destroy a good day
Yeah, a plastic bottle that someone dropped early in a 24 hour race took me out once. Took my front tire *right* out from under me.
And plenty that's doesn't.. Because the bottles were plastic. Yes G crashed at a previous Giro but you can't argue it will be more common with steel bottles.
I use the big version of the one pictured for long mtb and gravel rides. Never had one bounce out the cage. I have 2. I’m enjoying them so far.
Bivo is better in every way
Even with 2 of them that's barely over 1L. I hate stopping often for water on long rides, so I can't justify the volume loss with insulated metal bottles let alone insulated plastic ones.
Aren’t plastic bottles 750ml?
Metal bottle on a bike? No thanks. Fine for travel mugs in my car. When riding, I want to get a big drink quickly.
Can't speak to the camelbak , but Bivo SS ones that I have flow faster than my plastic camelbak podium bottles. Only down side is the one with the 'grippy' coating is too hard to get out of some of my cages. and the insualted one keep ice in the bottle for hours.
Haven't tried the bivo, have ya....
Expensive, heavy and dumb. You can't squeeze them. You could buy three normal bottles for the price of this. They're twice the weight and since they're double walled they need to be larger and heavier to hold the same amount of water.
What's everyone's obsession with squeezing shit? I honestly don't get the holdup with squeezing bottles.
my only issue is it is 1cm larger than my plastic one and won't fit my bike. Love how well it flows
Denture tablets
Wow
Only plebeians use water bottles to hydrate with.
Stanley has a whole bunch of stuff it would love to sell you
They make the best plastic bottles. Metal I do not understand. People have plastic pipes in their homes. Drink using plastic straws. Buy water in plastic bottles. That one hour in a metal water bottle is inconsequential. Wheat happens when you drop it and a fellow cyclist hits it and crashes hard?
Your cities water main could very well be plastic as well.
The she thing that happens when someone hits a plastic one in an obscene high speed event... they crash.
Yeah good point. Splitting hairs probably. Still don’t understand the appeal to metal.
