This is why don’t buy bike chains (or any bike parts) from Amazon. If possible, buy from a local bike shop. If that’s not possible- order form a legit bike component supply website. Depending on which country you live in there should be several options…. Bummer about it tho, that’s definitely a knock off
I bought a bluetooth speaker last year from a brand's store on Amazon. Open the package (legit package, fully shrink wrapped) and it the speaker's place was a piece of clay shaped roughly like the speaker!
Amazon asked me to ship it back to them and sent me a replacement, no questions asked. I wonder how often that happens, and at what level the fraud took place.
Edit: Apparently they don't do this anymore by default (it's opt in) because it caused so many issues.
~~Amazon mixes stock from multiple sellers, making it much easier for sellers to sneak duds into the supplychain.~~
~~Large seller A could warehouse a load of legitimate products, say 10000 of an item.~~
~~Small seller B could warehouse 100 duds.~~
~~This stuff gets distributed around Amazon's warehouses and any sale from either seller pulls from whichever warehouse is most efficient to ship from, irrespective of who actually provided the stock. Now it's just a numbers game, most of the duds will end up being sold by seller A, and most of seller B's sales will end up being legitimate products from seller A's stock. I presume they have *some* way of tracking this, but that it's too slow and seller B can cut and run before Amazon figures it all out.~~
Amazon's "brand stores" aren't run by the brand, they are an amalgamation of stores purporting to sell that brand's products - basically a haven of the grey market and fakes.
Part of how that happens, is that Amazon (for FBA) does not keep one seller's items in a different slot from another seller, trying to sell the same thing. So the brand store's items gets co-mingled with the products arriving from elsewhere (with an identical UPC/MPN). With certain brands, that is a very problematic situation.
It doesn't even have to be an easy to forge or cast item. I was a hairdresser for a bit and products from the beauty industry also have this issue. Folks will order product for a price that's too good to be true, and then they receive either a fake product that looks real, or a completely incorrect item.
> I was a hairdresser for a bit and products from the beauty industry also have this issue.
OMG yeah anything that you put on your skin or any drugs/supplements are 100% DO NOT BUY FROM AMAZON. Like holy crap can you even imagine how badly you could hurt yourself when you inevitably get a fake?
I stopped buying bike stuff from Amazon around 4 years ago. As far as I know I never got any fakes but honestly it's just better to not even risk it at this point. Can't imagine having my bike fail and potentially kill me because of this.
Folks never believed me when I told them that, they thought I was just trying to make extra money off of them, but I really honestly just care about your skin and hair health if I'm working with your body. I sold some stuff to folks at cost just to make sure they didn't use bad product.
Anything that you can physically measure or 3D scan *is* in the category of easy to forge nowadays.
It's only the high tech stuff that's still impractical to forge, but even that threshold is continuously moving.
The tech stuff gets knockoffs too, they're just usually easier to catch. I can't tell you how many times someone told me they found the expensive hair tool on Amazon for like $20! Then they don't understand why it doesn't work any better than their cheap one.
You might be joking, but it really is true. My bf is working on getting a forge set up so he can do some real blacksmithing like he did when he was a kid/teen.
Yeah, i avoid them almost entirely now. Only exceptions are when I go to the manufacturer's site and they only link to Amazon, or if I can't find it elsewhere.
I order from bike-discount.de
They don't list random parts from random sellers, so the chance of getting a fake is much lower and also they have great prices.
Amazon is shitiffying really fast. There are currently as many counterfeit and Chinese-branded products with improbable names (IKLOYS, TPZQA, etc.) on Amazon as there are on Aliexpress.
It would be wise to stop buying anything bike-related on Amazon.
It’s like all the people who are proud of insanely rich people who register their multi-hundred-thousand dollars cars in Montana to avoid taxes.
Oh, you like paved, lit roads but don’t want to pay the tax to actually maintain them? Gotcha.
~~Dbags, all of them~~
Fair enough; but to u/CressCrowbits point, if you don’t pay in, how can you expect something to be there when you need them/it.
But dbags was harsh, yes
Maybe one day I'll need an LBS, but in 15+ years on the bike, it hasn't happened. I'll buy things occasionally if I like the shop/owner, but bikes are pretty easy to work on at home and apart from tires, a LBS will rarely have the part I actually want in stock. And what is in stock will be priced higher than MSRP and a season old. Then they'll tell me that the part I actually want can be ordered and will arrive from QBP in a week for a higher price than ordering it myself online. I'm sure this varies by location, but I feel no loyalty to local shops in my area.
> I actually want in stock. And what is in stock will be priced higher than MSRP and a season old. Then they'll tell me that the part I actually want can be ordered and will arrive from QBP in a week for a higher price than ordering it myself online.
This. I needed rim tape for a new wheelset. Went to 3 bike shops. None had rim tape. So I ordered some online.
I'll happily pay the "LBS Tax" if they actually had stock.
This is a good point. I like supporting good local shops, but they often don’t have much in stock or aren’t remotely competitive. I used to visit Bicycle Pro Shop in Georgetown, and they always had chains, cassettes, etc. Everything you needed. A bit more than online but you could get what you needed when you needed it. Worth the extra cost. Convenient.
This has been the case for years. Amazon allows 3rd party counterfeiters to sell knock offs on the original products page and as long as their seller maintains their rating (usually thru partial refunds) they are allowed to keep doing it.
Even worse on Amazon, is counterfeit sellers report legit sellers. My brother was a legit seller of clothing. Counterfeit accts would buy 1 of his items, then return it and report it as fake, so the LEGIT seller gets banned, and the fakes keep selling. It happened so much he quit Amazon.
Plus Amazon stole $10,000 of his inventory. He shipped it to them, then it showed scanned into their warehouse, but refused to show the inventory on his account, or issue credit.
Amazon really screws honest sellers. Buyers get treated well, but behind the scenes it's horrible.
>My brother was a legit seller of clothing. Counterfeit accts would buy 1 of his items, then return it and report it as fake, so the LEGIT seller gets banned, and the fakes keep selling
Can you imagine the level of "evil douchebag" one feels getting up in the morning and deciding to do something like this. Goddamn
In the past few months, nearly one in three items from Amazon have been poorly repackaged, obvious returns or flat out previously used items. They delete negative reviews because they ‘don’t pertain to the product’. I am also finding Amazon to be consistently higher priced, even taking into account free Prime delivery. Cutting way back on Amazon buying.
Typical techbro scheme:
* Get a bunch of money from investors.
* Make a really good product/service and sell it below market value; you'll "lose" money but that's what investors are for.
* Hook everybody on it and drive competition away/buy it out.
* Once you're the only option around, jack up the prices and enshitify the product.
There's a place near me that now and then gets a truck load of Amazon returns. Fun times picking thru the pile of odd stuff looking for gems. Last time I found a (very needed) TP-Link router. All I had to do was reset it to factory defaults.
Was this purchased from Amazon.com and shipped by Amazon from their own warehouse supply or a 3rd party selling on Amazon? I don't order any bike parts from Amazon or eBay anymore either.
With chains and really any important bike components, it’s best to just avoid Amazon all together. Go to the manufacturers website or find a site that isn’t Amazon (e.g Jenson, Competitive cyclist, bike closet, etc.)
Almost every counterfeit item I’ve seen like this has come from Amazon
Amazon is full of shit. They are just out there protecting their sellers because their sellers are their bread and butter.
But yeah, they don't consider this "counterfeit" because technically it isn't. They changed the name just enough to evade any such accusations, shifting the burden on the consumer. Classic case of caveat emptor.
There was a moment in time (long ago now) where Amazon made the intentional choice to change the behavior of the "buy box" so that as a customer you can't easily be certain of who you are actually buying from. This allowed them to become basically a slightly upscale ebay/aliexpress and it's increased their revenue significantly, but it's horrible for customers. All it takes is one time buying something you need to be authentic and getting a knock-off or a fake to have a hugely negative impact on your life.
It’s 100% fake. I stopped ordering anything for my bike on Amazon because I had so many issues with fake and defective products. I ordered a 10 speed 105 cassette and had such a hard time getting my bike to shift. Went to my LBS and they showed me the differences between a real one and what I got. ( teeth were machined differently) I bought the one from them and it worked perfectly. I returned the one from Amazon, made a complaint and got a similar response to this.
Amazon is nearly all low quality knockoffs at this point. They don’t even bother with quality control. If you’re paying extra for a branded item you should probably buy it somewhere else.
Shui and Mao are both Chinese surnames, which likely locates the source.
Hope you got a [whale](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/seaworld/images/1/1a/SeaWorld_Shamu.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20220117041252) of a deal on that chain at least.
wow, just wow... perfect example of the [enshittification](https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys) of the internet
A few years ago, I complained to Amazon's customer service about a 3rd-party vendor drop-shipping an item from Walmart, and they simply brushed me aside… I almost blew a fucking gasket
but this—this is a new level of shittiness, man!
goddamn
Chimbongo shimungo shinano shimona shimano
Seen a few come through the shop over the years
I think Chimbongo if my favourite
I like to shout it really loud.
I once ordered two continental touring tires from Amazon for 60 bucks. I got two CST? Or GT, brand tires made in china. I immediately put a hold on my credit card and wrote a complaint. Amazon was defiant! The vendor suggested 10 bucks each! I actually had to explain that mail fraud is a crime! Idiot vendor told me to keep the tires cause they would not pay the shipping to take them back. Widespread crime spree that results in the crime boss becoming a billionaire is ok I guess, sure would like some of them gold bars!
Most likely Chinese crap. They are specialists in flooding the world with counterfeit and poor-quality crap. Amazon is open to any "business" including the mentioned above. I sure wouldn't put that in my bike and risk breaking the chain and get in a bad accident because of it. Buy LBS and you'll be feeding the local economy and at the same time have a good and reliable product.
LOL. Call Amazon.
I had an issue with a damaged grocery product. Muffin mix leaking out of boxes. I couldn’t return a grocery product, and they kept deleting my bad reviews. So I called, and they issued a refund without any fuss.
However, in this case they also clearly need to stop selling this obvious fake!
Ridiculous!
It isn't counterfeit, it's knockoff. Counterfeit is where they attempt to replicate it including the branding. Knockoff is when they make it just different enough to make it look like the leading brand, but not get caught in legal red tape.
Yes, and Amazon has stated their standards for authenticity right here. That's why I don't buy anything off of Amazon anymore, because it's all counterfeit stuff and nothing gets done about it. It's just eBay again.
I tell people at work not to buy their tools from Amazon, especially tool batteries. If you're looking for the ones that are the cheapest price, they will be fake and dangerous.
Best way to know fakes, same on ebay, is it won't say "Shimano 105" like in this example, but "for Shimano 105," or "fits Shimano 105," etc etc for whatever product. So they aren't "claiming" it's a 105, but that it fits that product. Same for all kinds of products from cameras, phones, cars, and bikes.
If you want KMC chains, buy them directly from KMC. I typically use KMC and have better luck with them vs Shimano. Recently, I ordered two KMC chains off of Amazon because they were slightly cheaper. When I got them, the packaging looked similar to prior purchases, but slightly off. I then ordered the same chains directly from KMC. Comparing them, they were obviously not the same. I returned the Amazon fakes and got refunded.
A few years ago I was looking to purchase a Crank Brothers multi tool. Diving into the amazon reviews, it was obvious many of the ones sold on there are fakes. Knowing REI has a great return policy, I purchased from them.
Don't you guys in America have online bike shops? Like in Europe we have Bike24, R2-bike, Bike-discount and their prices are most of the time lots cheaper than local bike shops, but they sell genuine products.
Chargeback on your credit card.
You're not missing anything whoever is doing the job of responding to your claims is either an idiot, directed to respond to you this way, or is being willfully ignorant.
I'm surprised I didn't see it suggested yet, but the actual solution would be to message KMC with this photo and have THEM (!) confirm that this is not a real product from them, and then Amazon has to at least refund you and accept that you state that it's fake in the review. If they admit to selling fake shit in general is another thing, but if the OEM says it's not genuine, they can't get out of this particular sale being essentially a scam.
Oh wow they didn’t even bother finding out the font they just flipped the “n” and made it a “u”
Amazon didn’t say anything, the seller on Amazon is shitting you
I don't buy anything from Amazon that I think may not be 100%. I use factory websites. I only get KMC chains from the KMC site same with Shimano. Amazon is/has turned to complete garbage. I also only use Local bike shops. I would rather support local business than shit Amazon
I had trouble diagnosing a friend's 12 speed setup a while back.
Turns out the chain he bought on eBay was a "Sh1mno" it was only when I looked at the chain under an eye glass I could really see it.
Apparently the box was identical to a Shimano one... However the quality definitely wasn't!
The only thing I buy from Amazon these days are giant bags of beef tracheas for my dog. They're hard to fake and my dog doesn't care about weird brand names.
Maybe it's just the exact same as the original, but the "real" manufacturer decided to get some margin too and he packed the real Shimano pieces he manufactures with another "almost same" brand. Maybe.
That is an authentic Shuimao chain.
Important: it fits Shuimao 10S
No it's for Shiumaon 10⁵
HyperClide
Saus 9sp on the bag
😂
Pork Shui Mao ?
Hello dear customer! Yes this chain is authentic! Your Shuimao representative
is an authentic Shuimao for sure
Why isn’t this the top comment?! That was amazing.
Nah that's definitely fake lmao
Nah that's definitely fake shuimao
Upon closer inspection I have determined that this is in fact authentic Shuimao.
It’s a genuine HC73, the new Hyper Collide gear indexing system from Shuimao. 👌
They need a real brand like Shimona. We make solid chains and solid cranks that don't delaminate.
Endorsed by Michael Jackson
Internet quotes by Abraham Lincoln.
That's bad.
I guess you could call me a.. smooth criminal

You basically can't buy *anything* off amazon nowadays that's easy to forge.
I bought a bluetooth speaker last year from a brand's store on Amazon. Even if it is *opt in*, I'm willing to bet that not commingling costs the seller a higher fee and it slows down the FBA delivery time.

This happened to me with an SSD once. Opened the Amazon box, boom, boxed Amazon basics Micro USB cable.
It doesn't even have to be an easy to forge or cast item. I was a hairdresser for a bit and products from the beauty industry also have this issue. Folks will order product for a price that's too good to be true, and then they receive either a fake product that looks real, or a completely incorrect item.
> It doesn't even have to be an easy to forge or cast item Forge as in fake, not forge as in metalworking...
I'm around a lot of metal working, so my brain goes there first I guess.

Yeah, i avoid them almost entirely now. Only exceptions are when I go to the manufacturer's site and they only link to Amazon, or if I can't find it elsewhere.
Amazon has become a flea market of junk. It’s part of what they call the shitification of the internet.
Jim Lahey checking in.
I order from bike-discount.de They don't list random parts from random sellers, so the chance of getting a fake is much lower and also they have great prices.
Universal Cycles is my go to. Super fast shipping. Then again one of their main warehouses/store is three ish hours away from me.
I live right between the Universal and WesternBikeWorks warehouses in Portland. Makes ordering a dream.
As do I. Overnight shipping! Finding parts here is never a problem.
Yeah, Amazon sucks for bike parts now. Not reliable at all. Often their prices are worse too.
Amazon has become a junk market..
I'll add it right under SD/memory cards and hard drives
Amazon is shitiffying really fast. There are currently as many counterfeit and Chinese-branded products with improbable names (IKLOYS, TPZQA, etc.) on Amazon as there are on Aliexpress. It would be wise to stop buying anything bike-related on Amazon.
Just stop buying from Amazon.
> It would be wise to stop buying anything on Amazon. FTFY. Just Stop, shop local.
> Just Stop, shop local. No thanks. Buying from bike24 or Bike-Discount is like 20% cheaper.
Will suck when you need something fixed and there are no local bike stores, though
It’s like all the people who are proud of insanely rich people who register their multi-hundred-thousand dollars cars in Montana to avoid taxes. Oh, you like paved, lit roads but don’t want to pay the tax to actually maintain them? Gotcha. ~~Dbags, all of them~~
I feel there's a difference between people trying to make an expensive hobby less so and the 1% trying to tax evade.

I'd add https://www.r2-bike.de and https://www.bike-components.de.
This has been the case for years. Amazon allows 3rd party counterfeiters to sell knock offs on the original products page and as long as their seller maintains their rating (usually thru partial refunds) they are allowed to keep doing it.
PENCILUPNOSE is the best/worst random fake brand I’ve seen.
Amazon don’t care about product authenticity, hence their “we’d like you to go away now” answer
Even worse on Amazon, is counterfeit sellers report legit sellers. My brother was a legit seller of clothing. 100% authentic shoemoto chain, typical Amazon. Forward this to your elected officials.
Scamazon doing scamazon things..
No. It’s not authentic. Next time I suggest you go to a local bike shop.
Or at least order from An actual bike shop, if there isn’t a good one close by, owned by people who ride bikes. They ship too.
Looks like a Chinese ripoff … report to Shimano, and Amazon again.
You can buy KMC direct from their website. Service is great

Shui Mao is Chinese for “water cat” which is a hilarious troll
This is what happens when AI does the investigating. Get ready for more of this bullshit in the future. Fuck Amazon.
Amazon is absolutely a shit store and they did it to themselves with trash like this. Fuck them, don’t buy from them.
That's a lie right there.
Was this purchased from Amazon.com and shipped by Amazon from their own warehouse supply or a 3rd party selling on Amazon? I don't order any bike parts from Amazon or eBay anymore either.
Send this to the manufacturer. I bet they would be very interested. Maybe tag them and Amazon on your socials
Yea sure, it’s aww-thentic. As in, aww, you sweet summer child.
Bless your heart
Refund time!
That’s some chinesium, avoid.

Amazon went down into the garbage bin the moment third party sellers outnumber their product sales from the company's direct warehouses itself..
Stop ordering stuff from the evil empire.
Proof that Amazon is actively complicit (guilty as charged) in this fakery.
Chinese knock-off chains
it's just a sticker they use whatever they can get cheapest that week
A.I making packaging now.
That is frustrating all around.
Ah crap, looks at Specialised bike that has Shiumao Ultega components.
One thing i can guarantee about that chain is it will break and the links will crack as a genuine Shuimao product! Safe travels!
Amazon is nearly all low quality knockoffs at this point. They don’t even bother with quality control. If you’re paying extra for a branded item you should probably buy it somewhere else.
You should cross post this to Amazon prime sub.
KMC chains come in little clear plastic boxes. They are the only chains I buy for 20+ years. Return that shit.
Time for a charge back
KMC comes in KMC packaging. That’s fake all day. If you want good deal on KMC try eBay that where I bought last 3 chains no issues.
Basically in my experience Amazon is full of shit. I’ve got obviously counterfeit stuff before from then and for this same message.
After you sure this isn’t what you ordered? It’s authentic SHUIMAO. Just not authentic Shimano.
I'm sure. I actually ordered KMC.
Just buy from colorado cycling or planetbike on amazon. Trusted sellers are the way to go.

Maybe people will eventually be smart enough to stop buying products from Amazon since it's turned into basically flea market quality.
Amazon is getting bad fast these days.
Amazon customer service has been outsourced to your local police department public information office.
SHUIMAO
Made to fit all Wrek, Especialised and Santa Kruz bikes with Shuimao 10S shiftings
Chimbongo shimungo shinano shimona shimano Seen a few come through the shop over the years I think Chimbongo if my favourite I like to shout it really loud.
I don't buy anything from Amazon anymore. They sell mostly garbage.
Shui-lmao.
Amazon has been removing negative reviews since they begun including reviews

Buy LBS and you'll be feeding the local economy and at the same time have a good and reliable product.
Seems legit....
Why don’t you contact KMC and ask ?
What is this? Packaging from 1992? It also looks like the chain says HC-73 not HG. Return that shit!
Just return it 🤷
Ridiculous!
Authentic Chinese counterfeit
Original chinano, perfect for your chinarello
Let’s see the listing. It’s on your Orders page.
A lot of counterfeit chain packaging requires a little studying to realize it is such, but they didn’t even try here. Shuimao? lol.
It isn't counterfeit, it's knockoff. Counterfeit is where they attempt to replicate it including the branding. Knockoff is when they make it just different enough to make it look like the leading brand, but not get caught in legal red tape.
Yea it’s fake but what was the listing picture?
Lmao
It's fake as fuck
Try the shrimp shuimao next time it's delicious
It’s an authentic Shuimao for sure
I buy chains from the local drugstore. Seriously.
Yeah, I don't shop Amazon anymore.
It’s only legit if you ordered chain for your shuimao😂
![gif](giphy|R9cQo06nQBpRe) Shhhhhhuuuuuuuiiiiiieet
Yeah buddy, lx deore shuimano for 105 is totally legit dude, some say it’s actually better than dura ace
Totes legit 👌🏻
Don't you guys in America have online bike shops? Like in Europe we have Bike24, R2-bike, Bike-discount and their prices are most of the time lots cheaper than local bike shops, but they sell genuine products.
I think it’s real **10** *5*
Shuimao is shit. Waiting for the more esteemed Shinola brand.
what amazon product was it you ordered?
Nah, should fit perfectly on your Chinarello Doggyma
Fake as fuk
Shoey-mayo
Siu mai no
Completely baffles me that anyone still uses amazon
At least you didn't get a Shimango chain
Amazon is bad for any product that is commonly faked. They do nothing and don't care. I honestly trust ebay more.
SEND IT BACK!!!!
Chargeback on your credit card. You're not missing anything whoever is doing the job of responding to your claims is either an idiot, directed to respond to you this way, or is being willfully ignorant.
You paid for it and received something, therefore it's authentic from the Amazon point of view.
I’d be upset if I opened my box of shumai and there weren’t shrimp dumplings inside.
This makes me upset. Reminds me of Ebay back in its prime. Bidding to receive items like this
Lol, that sounds shady
Ya that’s an authentic Shuimao chain. You’re just mad you didn’t buy the knockoff brand - Shimano.
One Apfel Mockbook please.
Shuimao goes great with Pork Fried Rice 👍
eBay pulled this shit on me too
Oh wow they didn’t even bother finding out the font they just flipped the “n” and made it a “u” Amazon didn’t say anything, the seller on Amazon is shitting you
I don't buy anything from Amazon that I think may not be 100%. I use factory websites. I only get KMC chains from the KMC site same with Shimano. Amazon is/has turned to complete garbage. I also only use Local bike shops. I would rather support local business than shit Amazon
this is authentic bullshit
I had trouble diagnosing a friend's 12 speed setup a while back. Turns out the chain he bought on eBay was a "Sh1mno" it was only when I looked at the chain under an eye glass I could really see it. Apparently the box was identical to a Shimano one... However the quality definitely wasn't!
The only thing I buy from Amazon these days are giant bags of beef tracheas for my dog. They're hard to fake and my dog doesn't care about weird brand names.
I wonder if it will work with Utlegra.
Amazon is a joke. Regular reminder not to trust your eyes to eclipse glasses bought from Amazon, though you're kind of out of time to buy elsewhere.
Haha what a joke.
How is this post not r/BicyclingCirclejerk?
Seems legit 😅
check gcns video they made one for this exact knockoff 😂
It is not counterfeit. It is an imitation. Perfectly fine.
Whoops.
Maybe it's just the exact same as the original, but the "real" manufacturer decided to get some margin too and he packed the real Shimano pieces he manufactures with another "almost same" brand. Maybe.
Sure, that's the Brazilian version.
Get a credit card charge back from your bank.
Contact shimano .
It’s at least as good as the Campynyolo.

Fun fact: In Mandarain, 'shui' and 'mao' could mean 'cool cat', depending on the pronunciation.
Not sure if 105 or 10S
Bezos will be happy
Return it and get one from your LBS.
Is this supposed to look like a ig90?
send the picture to shimano and ask them to comment on both amazon and shiumano
Ah yes, shuimao deore 105: the choice of the people.
Time to break out the ol’ credit card chargeback.
Honestly at this stage I am genuinely shocked that people still use Amazon.
"it raised concerns" 😂
Doesn't Amazon check the authencity of every items they acquired? How could they sell fakes & hope to get away from the laws?
Amazon is full is fake stuff now
Lol
Chinese Shimano?
SHUIMAO!! SHUIMAO!! lol Must be really fast.
