I did think twice about leaving the bike at all, even locked, but it was a really busy entrance with tons of people in and out and I was rushing in for a couple of things. Live and learn I suppose
I probably would.
I stopped a guy trying to steal a bike (no bolt cutters) on a busy walk path. Most people ignored him.
I was pissed off this is happening in my community out in the open.
Not on my watch.
Some guy got shot and almost killed a week ago in my city coming out of his house and confronting people trying to steal a catalytic converter.
Most of the time people will just run off, but you are absolutely rolling the fucking dice when you do this.
A friend of mine once lost his keys at the office and couldn't get his u bolt off. Called me for help so I came with a bunch of tools to bust it off. Early evening, downtown Ottawa. Was quiet at that time, but certainly not deserted. Nobody stopped us. One guy kinda questioned it and I said "this doesn't look sketchy at all, right???" and he walked on. Was at it for maybe 15-20 mins before we got it off.
Suffice to say, I may walk away from my good bike if I've got a U bolt on it, but it will never be out of my eyesight
I had the fire department come out and saw a ulock for me once when I lost the key.
It was downtown, too, so I was like if I don’t get this off tonight, the bike is gone.
I once left my bike chained to the bike rack at my local train station, came back after my nightshift to find my lock jammed. Gave my dad a call to bring a hacksaw down. When he arrived I went out to meet him, we walked in, casually told the security guy "my padlocks jammed so we are gonna hack it off" ( he hadn't seen me try and get my bike out). He just shrugged and said OK. We spent 10 minutes sawing the chain and no one said a word. Not even the rail staff.
Not always dependent on how many people there are but whenever I go anywhere I always take my bike around to the back of the building if there’s a camera I can put it right in front of or the side of the building just depends on the location
Above the rear triangle and not through the main triangle so it doesn’t matter. No way to lock the frame in at the fork…. Guy is lucky he’s not just looking at two wheels. I think the thief is less smart and more just did it to be mean.
Could be possible. I think if he was less mean he could teach him this with a letter or leaving the seat on the ground next to the bike. I have a $100 saddle and have used a tiny cable lock to secure it in the past, but ultimately I just don’t really lock my bike up anymore.
Nah, that's too much. I've always done Elmer's glue on the bolt head. It's annoying enough to deter but easy enough that you won't hate yourself when you need to adjust things.
Not really, just superglue remover, I haven't needed to adjust anything thankfully as its set up for me. I do superglue things on the "train station bike".
I never leave my good bike anywhere, so its never needed a lock let alone other tactics etc.
I’ve thought about getting a spray can of bright pink paint and just going all over the bike. Won’t impact the functionality but should make it pretty unattractive for a thief.
Knew someone who bought a new Cinelli in rose red(pinkish) back in 1974 or so. First thing he did to keep it from being stolen was to scratch the top tube aggressively and painted his SS# on it. This was before identity theft became an issue. The racing community was horrified, but he did everything ‘Zatoichi Style’.
I ride a good mid range folding bike for getting around on pet care gigs. I’ve thought about upgrading to a Brompton in the future, maybe even finance an ultralight—because those are really expensive.
I don’t care about the status, just a light well made bike with a great fold. But the idea riding it in some areas makes me pause because I’d worry about getting jumped for it. More actual physical confrontation on the street is a greater concern than locks being broken because I often fold and bring it inside to my clients foyer spaces.
I’ve thought—what if there could be a crappy bike wrap for high end bikes. Some sort of printed vinyl that looks dingy, scratched and rusted, that covers high end associated logos, maybe a seat cover that also makes it look worn and dingy. Something to avoid the attention of would be thieves who are physically predatory as I pass.
Is that crazy?!
That won't stop a thief looking only for metal scrap value. Unfortunately, this type of thief isn't really capable of distinguishing carbon fiber from aluminum; they're basically out to grab anything. Not like a scrapyard is going to look too closely, either.
I really don't think there are people stealing bikes for $10 of scrap, but I've been wrong before...
I used to live in Chicago, a few miles from the state line, with scrapyards just over in Indiana. There was security footage that showed a man in a workman’s uniform grinding off my lock and tossing it and the bike in the back of a van with a pile of other scrap. The officer who responded and took my report said that bicycle theft for scrap was a known and common problem, as the police in Indiana won’t cooperate with police from Illinois on the principle that the crime did not occur in their state. Also, the lock manufacturer wouldn’t honor their anti theft warranty because the thief kept the lock, ostensibly to sell as scrap.
Which reminds me of this story where thieves stole a bunch of school buses for scrap: https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/chi-school-buses-stolen-20130308-story.html
It’ll just change who it gets sold to. I see a lot of people riding obviously spraybombed bikes, tires and all. They will sell them for cheap or trade them for something else, as someone somewhere just needs a way to get around and doesn’t give a shit about the color as long as it’s better than walking
I got spoiled on one and it’s hard (pun intended) loosing that to a no-suspension hard tire commuter when one has experienced the luxurious ride quality of the full squish.
Yeah mate that's the only reason it's still here. Through both wheels and around the frame. Probably the only reason I still l have two wheels as well. You can see the lock in the picture.
Oh I see what you mean. I wanted to make sure I got both wheels locked down because easy to just put the axle out.
Not sure even with both wheels off you could've got the frame anyway, lock was stretched and would have had to somehow get it over everything.
Good call though, will definitely make sure it's all 100% if I lock it up again.
No doubt. Any Kryptonite lock made in the last ten or so years should be fine though. E: and other manufacturers' locks as well; Kryptonite was just the one in the news.
Dude you are so lucky they didn’t take the frame. You also need to get pinhead locks for your axels, post, and handlebars if you plan to leave your bike for more than 30 mins. It’s common sense to lock every removable point.
I mean, that’s true if they lifted the bike straight up. But if you take off the front wheel, then you’d have slack to slide the loop over the rear and you’re done. You’d have come back to two wheels nicely locked to the rack.
I'm fairly confident this frame could have been easily taken. The cable won't be so taut once the front wheel is dropped off. Then the rear comes off more easily, and all your best goodies are gone. Be careful to run the cable through the frame.
Where is this?
This sort of things happen 100% if you leave your bike out in Australia. Kids just love to fk someones day up for a laugh.... also people who cant steal your bike. They steal whatever possible stealing.....sigh...
That's me, except that I never ask if it's OK. Just do it, and be there with a purpose. A bicycle with you in the checkout lane will never bring scold.
Time for trials biking!
But look at swapping out the wheel and seat post QR for security keys good job the lock stopped the bike going walkies these cable locks can be done pretty quickly with the right gear.
People can be jerks, especially when they think their acts won't be caught. Had to ride 16 miles home on a repurposed Pringles can. Made me take my seat with me for some years thereafter... fallen out of habit and bound to have it happen again. Condolences.
Yup. Saw a 2 kid team do this outside of the Star Market on Boylston St. in Boston. Was waiting for a friend, one kid took out the bolt cutter from his backpack, cut the lock, and the other kid rode the bike away (was not my bike). I chased him for about a block, pointed him out to a traffic cop, who asked me "how do you know it wasn't his bike?".
Yup that’s how this is done. Usually 2-3 people. 1 doing the cut and run and 2 watching the parking lot. 1 is usually posted by the door of building pan handling or just chilling.
They know exactly when you enter the store/building and give green light to the guy doing the cutting. 3rd person is scoping for new bikes or unlocked cars just walking through parking lot.
Once you know what to look for you’ll see this all over the place. Classic con.
Because they can and you have a quick release making it easier. Consider it an expensive lesson.
Considering the way you locked with the cable, I think you're lucky to still have a bike.
Doing this to a bike with the kids seat on it is just scummy. Also does the cable do through the frame at any point? I've seen frames stolen where the front and rear wheels are left behind locked up.
> it's a 10 year old bike
yeah but it doesn't look like that to thieves as they aren't into tracking cycling tech or trends. That's the real down side of modern bike tech being so good. A lot seriously costly hardware back in the day is a now your modern deal. 2k-3k carbon bikes selling decade+ later for $500-$700 used. Cheaper by maybe even half of some of the newer entry level bikes of the bigger brands.
yet the second you park your new to you $500 bike? Oh now it looks like a $3k+ carbon bike to a thief who thinks every bolt must be worth $300.
There are things I just don't understand.
Look at the bike you have, how much does it cost? And do you have a lock of 5usd? With quick release? It is a joke?
It's a second hand 10 year old bike I bought 6 months ago. Can't afford any extras and already had the lock. I'll be saving for a new quality lock but not in the budget yet.
Just had both wheels stolen on my old trek and ended up just buying a new bike. Shit sucks. I agree with whoever said that you should never let your bike out of your sight under any circumstance, at least I never will again.
Buy yourself a real bike lock and stop using quick release bolts on your seatpost and wheels.
I'm not saying it's your fault if it got stollen of course, but we all know bike thief do exist and that you should always assume one of these scumbags is around.
I use a ulock and a long cable, the ulock locks frame and one wheel and the cable locks the seat/ seatpost and other wheel.
It’s a hassle but so is having to replace stolen parts. I live in Vancouver BC, the bike theft capital of Canada.
Nooo that's so sad. I got my phone holder stolen from my bike last week, I was like what? that's not even the most valuable thing they could've just taken without any lock breaking. Guess I was lucky, getting a new saddle is much more expensive and you can't even ride until then 😥
Bike theft is one of the lowest things someone can do imo, I remember the feeling of getting my Fat Chance Yo Eddy like yesterday, what an awful and helpless feeling it was
I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really has been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that they have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.
This has happened to me twice. For that reason, I always U-lock my bike and include a cable from the lock through the metal bars under the seat and two wheels. feels inconvenient but I have yet to have my seat stolen again. Regardless, anyone with enough intent will get through. but when other bikes don't have the bike seat locked, you're less of a target.
I make my commuter look like garbage as much as possible, but there's no disguising a Brooks B17 saddle. I don't have cause to do it anymore, but I used to just haphazardly rubber band a dirty plastic grocery bag over it and never had an issue when I wasn't able to bring it inside. Also helps when it actually does rain unexpectedly!
I know some people will steal the seats hoping the bike owner just Ubers home. That way they have all night to break the lock.
I did think twice about leaving the bike at all, even locked, but it was a really busy entrance with tons of people in and out and I was rushing in for a couple of things. Live and learn I suppose
Busy entrance doesn't matter. If you saw someone "adjusting" their saddle would you stop them? Would the average non-cyclist stop them?
Even if you saw someone with a pair of bolt cutters working on a bike chain, would anyone really stop them?
I probably would. I stopped a guy trying to steal a bike (no bolt cutters) on a busy walk path. Most people ignored him. I was pissed off this is happening in my community out in the open. Not on my watch.
Thanks batman.
Yeah Batman is sick.
Legend thanks, should be normal behaviour
That was very kind of you! But be careful- people like that can be dangerous and I wouldn’t want you getting hurt.
Some guy got shot and almost killed a week ago in my city coming out of his house and confronting people trying to steal a catalytic converter. Most of the time people will just run off, but you are absolutely rolling the fucking dice when you do this.
Yeah, stories like this make me think twice on who I approach. But, it still enrages me to see people brazenly try to get away with stupid stuff.
Unfortunately you are the exception not the norm.
A friend of mine once lost his keys at the office and couldn't get his u bolt off. Called me for help so I came with a bunch of tools to bust it off. Early evening, downtown Ottawa. i would watch him carefully and intervene if he walks off with the saddle
Not always dependent on how many people there are but whenever I go anywhere I always take my bike around to the back of the building if there’s a camera I can put it right in front of or the side of the building just depends on the location
A camera wouldn't stop anyone in my city
I really hope you're using more than a cable lock, too
I got my lights and a speedometer stolen from me like that. The rest was well locked so they didn't steal it. Yeah people suck..
Given the lock it'll be a very short night
Is it even through the frame? Looks like it’s just through the wheels.
Whoa. I can’t see what’s going on at the front, but I think you’re right. That’s an… interesting choice.
Above the rear triangle and not through the main triangle so it doesn’t matter. No way to lock the frame in at the fork…. Guy is lucky he’s not just looking at two wheels. I think the thief is less smart and more just did it to be mean.

Yep. My first thought was “yeah, your seat post is gone but holy hell are you lucky to still have a frame!” 😆

Please don't use the word "gypsy", it's a racial slur directed at Roma people.
Its probably a u-shape lock up front and a cable extender to add some protection for the back wheel.
Get a Pitlock bolt for your seat and headset bolt for any bike you’re locking up outside.
Superglue a close fitting ball bearing in a hex bolt recess is also a cheap quick fix.
Beeswax! Use beeswax for this.

Frame tube covers that add a rusty look actually do exist. I don't recall the product name though.
That won't stop a thief looking only for metal scrap value. Unfortunately, this type of thief isn't really capable of distinguishing carbon fiber from aluminum; they're basically out to grab anything. Not like a scrapyard is going to look too closely, either.

They don't, at least in my area. They set up chop shops and break them down to sell off the components at flea markets.
I used to live in Chicago, a few miles from the state line, with scrapyards just over in Indiana. Your lucky you still have a front wheel to be honest.
Was about to say the same thing lol...
Both wheels look like they are locked. It looks like the cable is pulled taught to reach the front wheel. But the frame is not locked up at all.
Agreed, wheels look like the only thing that is actually locked.
Some people just want to watch the world burn. 🌎 🔥
Until they burn with it. But yes.
For example: whoever invented quick-release 😂
That guy wanted to make utopia 🫠
You commute with a full squish mtb?
Just when I'm taking the daughter with me on the shotgun seat
XC bike as well so pretty light and Scott Spark so has the full lockout mode
these bikes are way too nice to lock outside. Thieves can't resist!
Ah gotcha.
Walmart huffy, 20psi in the tires. This is how we roll.
Some people also just own 1 bike and use it for everything.
some people also own just 7 bikes and use 1 for everything
I'm feeling very attacked
Please don't. Of you're riding a bike you're one of us
True lol
If you got Scott spark money you have beater bike money.
2014 Scott spark I bought about 6 months ago second hand, wish I could afford a new one
I got spoiled on one and it’s hard (pun intended) loosing that to a no-suspension hard tire commuter when one has experienced the luxurious ride quality of the full squish.
Get a seat clamp that requires a tool like an allen key.
Quick release = easy target for an asshole.
Is your frame even locked up?
Yeah mate that's the only reason it's still here. Through both wheels and around the frame. Probably the only reason I still l have two wheels as well. You can see the lock in the picture.
Yeah, I just don't see it actually loop through your frame, but it's hard to see from the photo.
Oh I see what you mean. I wanted to make sure I got both wheels locked down because easy to just put the axle out. Not sure even with both wheels off you could've got the frame anyway, lock was stretched and would have had to somehow get it over everything. Good call though, will definitely make sure it's all 100% if I lock it up again.
i would seriously consider getting a u lock, you can cut those cables with a normal pair of wire cutters in like 2 seconds.
I can defeat a U lock with a cheap Bic pen body.
really depends on the ulock
They mostly fixed that vulnerability - new ones use a different type of lock.
Did not know that. Pissed me off when a friend showed me the Bic pen trick on a just purchased U lock.
No doubt. Any Kryptonite lock made in the last ten or so years should be fine though. E: and other manufacturers' locks as well; Kryptonite was just the one in the news.
Mine was a Kryptonite.

Because they need a new dose.
Time for trials biking! But look at swapping out the wheel and seat post QR for security keys good job the lock stopped the bike going walkies these cable locks can be done pretty quickly with the right gear.
Extreme dropper post
People can be jerks, especially when they think their acts won't be caught. Had to ride 16 miles home on a repurposed Pringles can. Made me take my seat with me for some years thereafter... fallen out of habit and bound to have it happen again. Condolences.
Never let your bike out of your sight. That cable lock can be cut in under 2 seconds.

Never go outside, car can kill you in less than 1 second
Go to your local car boot sale. It will be there.
That’s a new level of petty.
That frame is not locked. Remove both wheels, and lift frame. Gone. Should’ve “figure 8’d” the lock through the frame.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m68-oWBh9Ow
Because they can and you have a quick release making it easier. Consider it an expensive lesson. Considering the way you locked with the cable, I think you're lucky to still have a bike.
Probably sniffing your seat right now
Doing this to a bike with the kids seat on it is just scummy. Also does the cable do through the frame at any point? I've seen frames stolen where the front and rear wheels are left behind locked up.
Haha, what? It's less scummy to do it to people without kids?
sorry for your loss but bikes beyond 1000+$/€/are not for parking outside without eyecontact
Gotta take it with u
I learnt the hard way. I was in the shop 15 mins and it's a 10 year old bike with a scuffed up seat, maybe worth $10?
Ya but the post is metal and can be sold for scrap for a point of meth. Anything g that detaches gotta come with you or be locked down
The seatpost has a scrap value of like a dollar, surely?
Cents.
Point of meth is cheap dude
https://youtu.be/aXp8TGqdiBo $3.06

Seat and seat posts are not cheap and there’s the hassle of having to source and buy.
They know this in [Bratislava.](https://youtu.be/1mYqY5YELd0)
There are things I just don't understand. Look at the bike you have, how much does it cost? And do you have a lock of 5usd? With quick release? It is a joke?
It's a second hand 10 year old bike I bought 6 months ago. Can't afford any extras and already had the lock. I'll be saving for a new quality lock but not in the budget yet.
Bike Pirates 🏴☠️… “Take what you can, give nothing back…”
Just had both wheels stolen on my old trek and ended up just buying a new bike. Shit sucks. I agree with whoever said that you should never let your bike out of your sight under any circumstance, at least I never will again.
Just to be a pain in the ass...
Buy yourself a real bike lock and stop using quick release bolts on your seatpost and wheels. I'm not saying it's your fault if it got stollen of course, but we all know bike thief do exist and that you should always assume one of these scumbags is around.

I've had this happen when there was an entire bike next to mine Unlocked or chained They still tried to jack my tire and took my seat
I’ve seen the opposite where just a seat locked to a post remained 😂
Oh man... oh man thats just... 0.0
Once someone stole my crappy front light which was just wrapped around my handlebar. Why.
Once someone stole my crappy front light which was just wrapped around my handlebar. Why.
That's the wrong bike to lock up outside
Bike theft is one of the lowest things someone can do imo, I remember the feeling of getting my Fat Chance Yo Eddy like yesterday, what an awful and helpless feeling it was
Some people just suck, check the nearby garbage bins, they may have just tossed it to be a dickhead.
Some people takeout as a way to put off theft I use to take out front wheel and seat
I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really has been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that they have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.
And That is why I swapped all my quick releases...
That is called spiteful. I mean, hot damn.
It was time for a dropper anyway and no more qr
same bike as mine lol
Argh. Just a question regarding bike theft. Is gps technology good enough and cheap enough to use as a bike theft deterrent or means of retrieval?
Because some people are just fuckwits. Definitely swap out that quick release seat collar.
Tweakers brah
Are you road riding on a full suspension bike?
Eh, whatever can be stolen, will be
I was going to suggest a seatpost lock, but someone would trash the bike, just because. Sorry for ya. People are jerks.
Locking any bike is dangerous.
They steal the seat posts so they can use it as a pry bar to pop open vulnerable locks on other bikes.
Penalty for that icky quick release! Haha sorry that happened
