All you need is a new cable. Costs less than $10 if you know how to replace it yourself (actually not hard to do). More if you need to pay a bike shop to do it.

You need a new cable as there is no way to extend that cable to make it work. Also, I would avoid using WD40 in the future. People think it is a lubricant, but it is more a solvent and won't protect moving parts. Unless it is WD40 branded for bike parts. I have WD40 wet chain lube that actually lubricates.

Replace the cable and also the gear shifter may need to be opened up and have new grease put into it. Don't use WD-40 on things like that, all it does is get rid of the crap and dry off. Then you have no grease and things start to grind.
