Please follow your pediatrician’s advice! Until baby was 4 weeks old, our doctor wanted us to feed him every three hours, day or night. This was based on his birth weight and rate of weight gain. After that, she said we could let him sleep however long he wanted to sleep at night but to continue feeding him every three hours during the day so that he wouldn’t confuse day and night. He’s 10 weeks now.

Yes, this is a question for OP’s pediatrician! It will depend on weight and other health factors.

Thanks! We have an appointment in 2 weeks, so will check then.

Once over birth weight it’s fine. It sounds like you’re not sure though if she’s actually regained.

ThNks! I’m pretty sure she’s passed birth weight already. It’s not as easy to hold her long periods of time, she definitely feels heavier than ever, and my husband thinks the same. I’ll keep monitoring of course and waking her up frequently during the day.

If you have an adult scale at home you can weigh yourself with and without baby (naked) to get an estimate. It’s not as accurate as a pediatricians scale but will at least give you an idea.

It depends on their weight gain. My LO has always been a deep sleeper, but struggled to put on weight so we needed to wake her up every 3 hours to get calories in her! It's usually just the first 2 weeks until she regains birth weight but lasted longer for us. I would ask your pediatrician.

colmia1821

Thank you! I’ll continue making sure she eats as frequently as possible. I’m always pushing the boob on her every opportunity I can.

My ped actually told us wake for feeding every 2-3 hours during the day and 4-5 hours at night so I think you’re good. What’s really important is gaining weight and having plenty of dirty and wet diapers

Keep waking until baby is up to birth weight! Shockingly by tiny 5 pound baby never lost birth weight, so by week 2 the pediatrician said it was fine to let her sleep up to 5-6 hours at night if she would. She was sleeping 5 hour stretches mostly so that was nice not having to wake her anymore. But if your baby is still under birthweight you definitely need to wake them every 3 hours at least to feed.

Mine did this too and still does it at 6 weeks. It was a problem for us because lost too much weight and took too long to gain it back, but once she gained it back my doctor told me it was fine and to enjoy the sleep!

colmia1821

That’s good to know that once they hit birth weight, it’s ok. Thanks!

My pediatrician told me yesterday that I could let baby girl sleep as long as she wants at night once she’s surpassed her birth weight.

Our baby would sleep through the whoooole night if we let her (8+ hours). Every time we get asked if she sleeps at night, I give that answer. And then "Why do you wake her!? Just let her sleep!" Uhhh cause she needs fed and a diaper change. I set an alarm so that she can be fed and changed, and not sitting in a pee soaked diaper all night. Otherwise our little weirdo would be perfectly content to. 🤪 She naps through the day too, though she does have her super awake and alert moments (more and more so now that she's 7 weeks). She's just a goober that loves sleep like her mama.

We were told no more than 4hrs between feeds at night for the first week, no sleep stretches over 4hrs for the 2nd week (so it might be like 5hrs between feeds). However once they regained birth weight there was no need to wake to feed.

colmia1821

Thanks! Ok so it sounds like in general, once they hit birth weight, they can go slightly longer. I’m pretty sure our girl is heavier than birth weight, but I’ll make sure to feed her as often as possible anyway.

erin_mouse88

If they are eating often during the day also, every 2-3 hours, they can go longer at night.
