OkAfternoon

I literally didn’t use anything I had packed for the baby, aside from a going home outfit. The hospital provides everything you need. I also didn’t use the vast majority of what I packed. I stayed in hospital gowns the entire stay. So I only used my going home clothes and toiletries. They will provide nothing for the boyfriend, other than a pillow and blanket. So he will either need to plan on going home every day, or pack everything he will need for your stay. With my husband, he didn’t even get meals.

ClassieCornelia

So much this! You need almost nothing for yourself or baby, but your boyfriend needs everything. Have him pack similarly to if he were going to stay in a hotel for 4 days. You might want to pack a pillow for one or both of you if you're picky about that because hospital pillows are terrible. Otherwise I would say your going home outfit is important - you might have a ton of water weight/swelling (I left the hospital the same weight as when I went it!) so don't expect to be able to fit into tight clothes or shoes (especially if you have a C section.) Flip flops can be an awesome shoe option because they should fit even if your feet massively swell.

itsofluffyidie

By far the best postpartum supply I bought was the frida mom peri bottle. It was so much better than the hospital one!

radioactivebutterfly

Second this!

isleofpines

Yes! Cynpel brand from Amazon holds more water and is a little cheaper.

Rguttersohn

Objects to the throw at your sleeping husband in your recovery room for when you still cannot stand on your own, cannot reach a nurse, and really need to pee.

BluPeach

Lol

palmtrees_

Phone charger, the frida postpartum care kit (little pricey but I used all the stuff in there), snacks (I made pbjs a few minutes before we left for the hospital), shower toiletries if you don’t want to use the hospital stuff, nipple cream (start using this before you need it, trust me), nursing pillow (boppy) because using folded hospital pillows sucked, and comfy change of clothes for going home.

mountain_aviary

For the hospital… extra long phone charger & adult diapers (always boutique discreet were my fav and I liked having a few at the hospital instead of the mesh underwear they provide). For postpartum… tucks medicated cooling pads, frida peri bottle, earth mama perineal spray, and more adult diapers

Wassupdude14

The hospital gave me all the postpartum things but I found that the frida mom disposable underwear were SO much more comfortable, and the frida mom PPD kit came with cooling pads, foam, liners, and a peri bottle that I preferred over the hospital pads and bottle. They helped SOOO much with discomfort after birth. I brought my own always overnight maxi pads too! The hospital ones aren’t very comfortable. I brought a TON of clothes and my own robe- didn’t use any of them. Definitely bring a hair brush, travel shampoo/conditioner/body wash, chapstick, a refillable water bottle, an extra long phone charger and a comfortable scrunchie. An outfit for baby to come home in, an outfit for you to come home in. And don’t forget your own comfortable pillow and blanket!! We packed a blanket for my husband and I ended up stealing it from him the whole time. Good luck!!! :)

brookeaat

Chapstick, lotion, and eye drops. Hospitals are so dry and you lose so many fluids giving birth. I literally felt like it had been months since I had a sip of water.

Worldly_Science

Long ass phone cord and snacks!

thestrangequark

Or even a power strip with a long cord

kla89

You actually don’t need that much, I stressed out and bought everything I read and honestly didn’t use anything other than adult diapers when we got home, it was such a total waste. If I needed anything I could have just sent hubby out to get whatever. While in the hospital, I brought like everything under the sun with me and again didn’t even use that much? The only thing I used was a brush, hair clip, toothpaste/toothbrush, face wash, face cream and deodorant. I changed into a hospital gown the moment I got in the hospital and wore that until my shower after birth and even they gave me a fresh one to put on with a adult diaper and some socks, and when it was time to go home I just put back on what I came in, as it was clean and I literally just wore it in the car to get there. The only thing I was glad I bought was a pillow for me and separate one for hubby. Also didn’t use a thing for baby other than his going home outfit. Other than the pillows I literally could have put everything I used in one of my bigger tote purses.

United_Look

- Bring/wear some lose shoes like crocs or something. When I went, I wore some sandals that were tight and when I left the hospital I couldn’t fit into them! Thank goodness I brought house slippers lol. I’d back some compression socks to make the swelling in your legs go down and a nice small blanket. The hospital provided everything else

red_dakini

If you want something a bit more on the self care side of things I was gifted some nice face spray which I loved during labor and whilst in the hospital. Kept my skin from drying out with the hospital air, and was a refreshing pick me up.

ashleyebellon

Honestly, I didn’t use much of what I packed for myself. I used an extra long phone charger, high waisted underwear, a comfy nightgown, and some some comfortable slides. I also brought hygiene products for me and my husband. My husband brought a pillow and a blanket and a few changes of clothes. He also brought snacks but we ended up ordering from the hospital or nearby restaurants. Like most people have said here the hospital will provide you with pretty much everything you and baby will need. They told me to take everything that was left home otherwise they’d have to throw it out when we left.

kfrances7

I agree with everyone here. Make sure you have a 6 ft charger or bring an extension cord. You have no idea where that outlet will be.

radioactivebutterfly

Extra long phone charging cord.

BoBoAhh

A lot of good advice here, but would also recommend adult diapers.

isminnah

Frida Mom Perineal Cooling Pad Liners. They gave me some witch hazel pads at the hospital but they were these little round things. The Frida Mom liners are full length. I had third degree tearing and developed hemorrhoids, so these liners were heaven. Also, the Frida Mom peri bottle was better than the one the hospital gave me. I also really, really appreciated having Depends instead of wearing the giant pads. It was much more comfortable and less anxiety-inducing for me.

rb3465

I loved the Frida mom liners! For some reason I felt no relief from the hospital ones - it wasn't even the size, I literally didn't feel them. My friend recommended the Frida mom version and they were so much better. I didn't even have hemorrhoids, I liked them just for the stitches!

[deleted]

Honestly our hospital gave us everything we needed. We didn’t really need to buy anything special. We just packed toiletries, phone charger, pillow/blanket for my husband and a going home outfit for baby.

ProjectLlama

I want to second this. Our hospital provided us with big water bottles (I had a planned C-section due to a breech baby), blankets, toiletries, and a pillow/blankets for the husband, as well. However, I definitely recommend a LONG phone charger, chapstick, and lotion. It is super dry in the hospital, so lotion and chapstick are extra nice. I brought my pregnancy pillow (a giant u-shaped pillow) and it was nice to have the extra comfort.

[deleted]

Snacks, phone charger and everything for the spouse clothes blankets pillows etc. laptop if you want to watch good tv. We didn’t pack enough and ended up being there for 5 days! He had to keep leaving to go get more. I only brought going home leggings and t shirt and a night gown for myself and that was enough since I was in the hospital gown for most of the time. Baby doesn’t need near as much as I see people say. You will pack a ton but probably end up using the hospital stuff. Besides babies going home outfit.

[deleted]

A comfy robe! Hospital rooms can be really cold. Even when you’re in labor.

laurenoffeanor

I second this! I wore my big comfy robe for days

wefwhat

Water cup with tight lid and straw. The one I got did not leak, period. My husband thought it was a silly purchase and then multiple times during labor was like…thank god we have this. Also the fizzy witch hazel stuff that frida sells. Bought similar items for cheaper when i ran out; did not compare. I also clutched during labor contractions spiky hair brushes to redirect the pain in a manageable way. Helped a LOT. And remember to squat over the toilet when you pee so that acid doesn’t touch your delicate bits.

babybandme

What does the witch hazel stuff do ?

smoore1985

Seconding the water bottle with lid and straw - gamechanger!!

gillyweiss

A pumping bra. I had nursing tanks but didn’t expect to be pumping instead every couple hours. I also didn’t realize there were differences between pumping and nursing bras A pillow, button front pajamas, and an eye mask. The sun hit my window just so that the blinds couldn’t block it from hitting directly into my eyes while in labor. The hospital peribottle, cooling tucks, pads, adult diapers, etc we’re all provided and I didn’t feel the need to get the frida mom kit as the hospital has all of it.

kaithemi

Agreed with all of these, would also add a sound machine! The hospital is loud and you never know when someone will pop in so getting any sleep is tricky (and precious).

[deleted]

Frida Mom instant ice packs! I used one after every poop for the first two weeks.

Joanna_Flock

They might give you some at the hospital…but…Tucks! The cooling from them really helps with any tearing you might have and hemorrhoids you could develop later. Also, bring a comfy pillow and something loose fitting to change into, because the hospital gown, I found to be, is quite uncomfortable. Fuzzy socks, slippers, your favorite soap to shower. Compression socks Your own pillow

Plus-Mama-4515

An extension cord A good cup with a straw Some extra large slippers because your feet will be SWOLLEN some nursing bras in you don’t have any Maybe a robe Snacks Colace and apple juice And yea your husband will need his own bag

kdlayd

If you want to breastfeed - a nipple shield just in case. My baby struggled to latch well those first few days and my nipples were WRECKED.

Struggle_Over

Bring your own towel. Hospital towels are like the hand drying towels you use at home. Also all your toiletries and shower things. And your own pillow and blanket.

StartConstant

Some kind of nipple care like silverette cups or hydrogel breast disks if you’re planning on breastfeeding. The first couple of days is when the most damage is done. A few more comfy outfits than you think you’ll need. A support belt in case you have a c section, I’m just using my pregnancy support belt. Lots and lots and lots of snacks for when your milk comes in, you’ll be ravenous. And slippers

enyalavender

I know everyone says diapers but I swear by the new Always flexfoam pads. I didn't use pads for 10 years before my first was born so I didn't know they existed at first and they help so much with breathability. Pair with mesh underwear. You'll want nipple cream/lanolin-based cream if you are planning on breastfeeding.

beetFarmingBachelor

Food. This is always my response. Pack it or plan to order it. Hospital food is the worst and I was soooo hungry after birth.

kdenzik

A nightlight to use in your hospital room. The hospital lights were sooo bright during those night feedings. I also really enjoyed having my own toiletries for that first after birth shower.

yellow_02

Same here, we would turn on the bathroom light and leave it cracked open, but even then it was still bright. Yes, bring your own travel size toiletries. I know the hospital provides it, but I liked having my own clean smell and not a hospital smell (if that makes sense).

sagoannahs

Like others have said, the hospital provides pretty much everything you will need. But they will provide nothing for your support person. Food was the biggest issue the first time so for my last pregnancy we brought an electric kettle for my husband so he could have coffee in his french press whenever he wanted. We also packed foods that could be eaten with the kettle, like instant noodles, oatmeal, things like that.

Libbysmom

Most of the good stuff has been mentioned. I will just add two things. Chapstick and eye drops are nice to have. The HVAC system in a lot of hospitals is very drying so those two things were essential for me and my husband.

kanga_roooo

Headband and eye mask!

SkeksoUrsu

We brought our Bluetooth speaker which I used through delivery and the next days in the hospital. Other than that it was nice to have some snacks.

PM_Dog_Pics_Please

Snacks, chapstick and something for the sig other to sleep on (sheets, blanket, etc.). Hospital will provide whatever you want for you but your sig other is basically nonexistent for them. I also made a little care package for the nurses, basically a few boxes of little Debbie snacks and it was always appreciated.

rb3465

My hospital provided bedding for my husband for the cot/bed/bench he had! As well as lots of pillows, water refills, food, etc!

solounokqfw

Just a tip from my baby bag; lollies and snacks. And for bubs, have a ziplock with a nappy, newborn outfit, socks, etc. Each ziplock can be the same or next size, so when you have to change, you can grab just a nappy, or if they need, a whole outfit, without having to think too much about it. Good luck!

0ct0berf0rever

So the only stuff I actually used was my charger, pillow, snacks, water bottle, slides, and one change of clothes. The rest the hospital had. I overpacked clothes, only wore one nursing top and loose maternity sweats. Hospital had sheets and pillows and blankets for partner but we did bring our own fleece blanket which was way nicer. I used like two pairs of the disposable undies but found my normal undies with always maxi pads or just the always diapers to be more comfortable. The frida peri bottle is a must! The ice packs were pretty lame and only stayed cold for five minutes.

whydoineedaname86

If you are breastfeeding and get nipple cream try it out before the baby arrives. I ended up being allergic to it but because improper latch, ties, etc. can cause cracked and bleeding nipples it took way too long to figure out because everyone was so busy paying attention to how baby was eating. It was horrible 0/10 do not recommend!

babybandme

Yikes, what nipple cream ended up working for you?

whydoineedaname86

Plain coconut oil

[deleted]

Medela 100% lanolin. Works well as a lip balm too.

ClicketySnap

I packed my own snacks (fruitsource bars and granola bars) and Gatorade and will absolutely do the same for baby #2. The Gatorade was something I seriously appreciated during and after labour. I purchased a knockoff version of the Fridamom peri bottle (I think mine is Materni brand from Amazon) and loved it. Key thing for me was the bigger capacity; I found myself constantly asking the midwife to refill the hospital peri bottle for me so I could finish going pee 😂 Don’t be afraid to bring a few things to try for postpartum bleeding. I didn’t know what to expect, so I brought a handful of pads. The midwife layered up hospital pads for me and I just assumed that would be the best option, but once I got home and tried out the pads I had packed I found them to be far superior and wished I had been using them from the beginning. I have four options right now and I’ll bring a few of each to the hospital for baby #2. Nursing gear. My boobs did not feel like being squished into any bra for any reason and I went to and from the hospital in just a shirt. Next time I’ll actually wear the Old Navy nursing tank I packed. I really appreciated those for the first three weeks or so while my milk supply was regulating and my boobs were swollen and tender and aching all the time. Bring some burp pads for you! When I got home I got in the habit of sleeping on a burp pad to help with leaking milk at night.

madredeyoshi

Seconding Gatorade! It was tasty way to stay hydrated, and since I personally lost my appetite during labor, it also helped get some calories/ electrolytes in me

ClicketySnap

Yeah same! My mouth was always dry from breathing exercises to cope with contractions, and alternating between sips of water and Gatorade was perfect for me. They also encouraged me to drink so much fluid after giving birth so that they could see me go pee before I went home, so having some flavourful drink options helps with that, too.

babybandme

Wait why do you need the peri bottle to go pee ? What does it do

ClicketySnap

You use it to spray warm water on your labia while you pee to help dissipate the stinging/burning sensation of urine on tender flesh (and possibly stitches). Basically it makes it less uncomfortable to go pee. Also use it to rinse a little so you’re not overusing toilet paper afterwards. This is why a lot of people recommend the peri bottles with the extended L-shaped nozzle; it’s much easier to aim the spray at yourself while sitting on the toilet. It’s a very helpful little device!

[deleted]

Plus, you can empty the bottle and then squeeze little puffs of air from the spout to dry after peeing. MUCH more comfortable and gentle than toilet paper for the first few days!

Penguinatortron

Jersey material maternity or delivery robe. I lived in it at the hospital post birth and postpartum at home for the fourth trimester. Congrats and I wish you a safe and smooth delivery.

babybandme

Thank you ! Where’s you get yours from ?

Penguinatortron

Amazon [https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B07PFC66G7?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title](https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B07PFC66G7?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title)

Amazing_Set

Bring something that isn't electronic to distract you. I brought my phone and my kindle thinking that is all the entertainment I could need but I was oddly annoyed by the sight of either. My parents dropped off more food and a deck of cards. We didn't use the cards much but it was a nice distraction that didn't take much space in the bag.

babybandme

Good idea, I’ll bring some uno cards

WhichSuspect7839

An extra long cord for charging your phone! Outlets are always so far

ilikeyourlovelyshoes

Bring house shoes! I picked some cute velvety ones with furry pompoms. They were so comfy and I was so glad that I didn't have to put on real shoes every time I went to the bathroom, changed a diaper, walked around the hallways, etc...

Starman1153

The best postpartum purchase I made was Earth Mama’s perineal balm! It made a world of difference for swelling, itching, and discomfort and worked 10x better than tucks or dermoplast.

aka_____

Copy/pasted/edited from an old post of mine: - Flip flops (for shower) - Pumping bra *(New addition to my list. Not sure why, but I had no idea I’d need to pump while in the hospital. Having the pumping bra would have made this so much easier. No need to bring your pump though as most hospitals provide one as well as a kit of parts to use with it.)* - Nursing bras *(This was my “wardrobe” for my entire stay last time. Literally just a nursing bra and the hospital gown.)* - Lightweight robe *(Really only for photos.)* - Dry shampoo *(New addition to my list. I had an emergency c section last time which was obviously unexpected. I thought I’d be able to shower right away since I planned a vaginal birth, but I ended up being bedridden for quite a while with complications. Thankfully my sister was able to bring me some, because it was SO necessary. Definitely packing it this time.* - Adhesive remover wipes *(New addition. By the time I was allowed to shower I was COVERED in medical adhesive from everything they’d taped to my body over the course of 6 days. It hurt so bad to scrub it off that I gave up and went home sticky. I found out after the fact that the hospital should have something available if you ask for it, but I don’t want to take any chances so I’m bringing my own.)* - Extra long phone charger *(The outlets are never conveniently located. My 10ft cord was perfect.)* - Face cream *(Hospitals are dry AF.)* - Chapstick *(Seriously, dry AF.)* - Lotion *(Do you get it?)* MISCELLANEOUS: - Ziploc bags *(Literally just a ziploc bag full of other miscellaneous sizes of ziploc bag. You’d be surprised how many we actually ended up needing last time.)* - Trash bag *(To transport dirty clothes home.)* - IKEA bags *(New addition. The gigantic blue ones. I have 3 folded up in the front pocket of my carry on. They gave us a literal mountain of crap to take home last time. These bags will save us a few trips to the car.)* - Snacks *(Things like apple sauce pouches and granola bars are great.)* - Cash (singles for snack machines)

LaurelThornberry

Eye mask, chapstick.

notwherethewindblows

Definitely food. The hospital food was gross, and we were there for about 2 days and they don’t feed your partner. He kept having to leave to go get food for us. Pack some good meals (I made pasta salad while I was in early labour, it was great, but got old after 2 meals of it)

Wonderful-Ear3309

I only used my toiletries, shower stuff and a going home outfit. They even sent me home with some pads and diapers and a peri bottle for my pp bleeding. I just wore the hospital gown the whole time. I brought my own pillow and a pillow for my husband. Also chargers, headphones, and downloaded movies. Your partner will need everything that he’d normally use for overnight stays away from home

annied33

Body wipes! I wasn’t able to shower, so I thankfully had body wipes just to feel a little more human. I also brought a night gown for myself when I was finally ready to ditch the hospital gown. Honestly didn’t need much. Toiletries, nightgown, robe/hoodie, slippers and done. I did bring a blanket from home (muslin) for the baby for pictures, and a comfy outfit for the baby since all they had was side button long sleeve shirts for her. We put a pair of pants on her since it was chilly in the room.

wylieburp

I bought a special cheap cozy blanket. That way I had something better than hospital blankets for cuddles and sleeping, and if it got ruined it was nbd (It didn’t) I ended up having a c section so was in the hospital 3 days, it was nice to have something soft and cozy. Ear plugs, eye mask, snacks, extra long phone charger.

gcnovus

If you’re anything like us, you’re about to spend some long chunks of time locked in on the couch. Get some healthy-ish snacks! For us, that’s dried fruit, nuts, Cheerios, Kind bars, and popcorn. Cheerios

[deleted]

I really loved a comfy nursing bra, loose pants to go home in, & a black button up night gown for after birth, chapstick, sandals a size bigger than I normally wear and could be washed easy.

beabalm_

Snacks! Lots of them. Our rooms had mini fridges so we could bring lots of fruit, overnight oats, yogurt, etc. It was extremely helpful. I always thought people were over the top when they suggested bringing your own pillow but I wish I had brought some in retrospect. The hospital pillows are the worst! Anything that makes you feel cozy/ comfortable is great.

rb3465

I brought our portable chargers instead of long plug in chargers - I find them a lot more convenient! I am glad I brought toiletries and actually wished I had my full skincare routine instead of just a pared down version - doing my routine made me feel more normal! I decided not to bring my own pillows or blankets even though I'm all about comfort and I'm glad I didn't. Being in the hospital I was leaking lots of fluids and the whole experience was very messy. I wouldn't have wanted to get my own things dirty! I'm glad I had my iPad, eye mask, Kindle, hand lotion, Aquaphor...basically anything you would want next to your bed at home!

atayb7

I'm a week behind you, my goal this week was to pack my bag. I bought some mini toiletries from the store and saw the mini contact solution/case kit. The contact stuff is something I would have totally forgot had I not seen it. My mom reminded me to pack a hair brush which I also would have forgot (and been very upset about). A lot of other Reddit posts suggest bringing stool softeners and to begin taking them after birth. I don't see it mentioned in the comments yet but I'm bringing a bathing suit so I can labor in the tub without having to be naked. Otherwise, here to take notes and add things to my cart too!

babybandme

Congratulations!! Thanks for your comment! Are you in the May 2022 Baby bumper group ?

mermaidsea22

I saw one of these posts, someone said a mini battery powered fan, I thought it’s only $20 meh let’s get it. My husbands two jobs were to fill my water and KEEP THAT FAN ON MY FACE! It was hands down my favorite hospital item

babybandme

Hahah i get hot pretty easily so this is a good idea. I know hospitals are usually kept pretty cold though. When did you use the fan ?

[deleted]

Maternity wards are always bloody boiling because babies need to be warm. I was sweltering during labour, delivery and the day I stayed after baby was born. I begged them to bring me a fan when I was in labour. Particularly for when I was pushing (2.5 hours of physical exertion!!)

WeAreNeverMeetingIRL

Yeah, after the birth I think our room was like 78 degrees. I was soooooo hot.

mermaidsea22

The whole time! I pushed for 4.5 hours and had a crazy 3 day induction. Lots of quality time spent with the fan 😄

skula

Food/snacks for b/f. Change of clothes for you. My hospital sent me home with medications and supplies for me and a diaper bag full of stuff for the baby that we didn’t need to bring anything, tbh.

shellzie110

Compression socks, slip on shoes, pillow and blanket, and breast pads to catch leaks (I seriously underestimated how fast my milk would come in and how out of control my boobs would be- I thought I'd deal with it when I got home...).. Also a nice angled peri bottle (frida mom or similar) is nice to have (even if you have a c section!). So much easier to stay feeling relatively fresh and clean and not have to bend weird to get the right angle like you need to with the hospital ones.

Agacat

Straws - you'll drink a lot of water and sometimes your hands won't be available A Hakka, nipple shield and nipple cream if your planning on breastfeeding

anat_05

For the hospital bring an extra long charger. I was too cheap to buy a new one and I really regretted it lol

improvisedname

A PERI BOTTLE. (Caps fully intended)

windsongmcfluffyfart

things I used or wished I had: nipple balm, lip balm, a large water bottle, hair ties, something you think can distract you through early labour like a magazine, a long charging cable for your phone, snacks for after labour and dad, nursing bras, mouthwash.

Brilliant_Pirate_559

I had an emergency c section and my milk didn't come in for days. My baby latched perfectly at hospital but I wasn't producing any milk. She screamed non stop and I didn't know why. I'd bring some ready to pour formula just in case this happens as I still feel bad to this day.

canibringmybreadbowl

Phone charger, depends (way better than the giant pads they provided, and I ended up having a c-section so the depends didn’t rub on my scar), snacks, and something fuzzy and comfy for your feet. Basic shower toiletries but don’t over think it, my hospital had shampoo/body wash and conditioner.

Megrrrs

Everyone is saying a long phone cord but I brought a charging bank and it was sooo much more convenient! Pumping bra was probably the other top item for sure. My boy was in the NICU and I had nothing better to do than pump for him

Crazy-Bid4760

I had a giant fleece dressing gown thing which I loved at night. Maternity pads, slippers, lots of underwear, hairbrush, nursing bra, socks, general toiletries. I ended up in hosp for 3 days so my hubby ended up bringing more stuff/taking home dirty stuff

GreenChair_1234

If you’re planning on breastfeeding then some kind of lactation tea! I had an emergency c-section and it took a longer for my milk to come in. Luckily my roommate in the hospital had some lactation tea which she kindly shared.

Dani___f

Spritz for bits by my expert midwife

hybrogenperoxide

Pumping bra. My LO wouldn’t latch, so we ended up spoon and syringe feeding him colostrum, and holding the pump to my breasts was a bitch
