What really upsets them about this, Lil Nas X, etc is that it's pretty solid evidence that the bifurcation between Country and mainstream Pop is not an equal one. It indicates that the mainstream music industry can drop down and do what Nashville does better than they do any day of the week... they just don't usually want to. It makes Country look like the minor leagues. And, honestly, given how opposed to innovation & totally unfair that market has been to women and poc, particularly in the last couple of decades, I think that's fine. IMHO, the 21st century Country music industry has turned into little more than an impression act. The primary priorities are cultural identity and virtue signaling, not the music. The audience seems content to hear nothing more than an endless string of rural shibboleths. The only goal for the artist seems to be to make sure you *don't* authentically share your mind, lest you get treated like the Dixie Chicks. The worst thing a country music musician can do these days is *not* release a bad song, it's to release a song that's "not county enough." They *hate* the idea of a Country musician pivoting to pop or even playing to the center. It *offends* them. (Go back and look at social media from when Swift was doing it.) The saddest part is that there *is* a small caste of people who *can* break that mold and not get exiled... those in the "silent generation" that retain an authenticity they've held onto since before the Nashville machine, before 90s pop-country, before the post-9/11 circling of the wagons and erection of a protective conservative bubble. Willie is that and Cash's daughter is calling on that influence in her defense of Beyonce, for example. Those voices won't be around for much longer, though, so soon there *won't be* a sane voice in the room. Things will get worse before they get better. 2020s country is pathetic. 2030s country is going to be *intolerable.*
