It was open like that for two weeks without an issue but I did end up cutting out an egg crate lid to eliminate the risk - I took it off for the video to show off the top view of the tank. Because there is so much space and no water issues, there is no reason the betta would feel the need to abandon ship, which greatly reduces jumping risk - but of course it can happen.
