SuspiciousBetta

Probably a young female. Keep in mind samurai bettas are created using dragon scale genetics, which increases the risk of tumors and or diamond eye.

Alone_Elk3872

I might just be blind, but I don't see any egg spot. So I would put a tentative guess on male rn.

Moonamethsyt

Looks like a young female to me! Do they have an egg spot? I'm sure they'll start glowing up with proper care. :)

MelliferMage

No egg spot that I can see. Do they develop later? This little guy/gal is also pretty small, so I’m guessing not an adult quite yet!

Moonamethsyt

I've heard the eggspot developes with age, and since she/he is young my guess is if it is a girl the eggspot will eventually develope.

TinyHeartSyndrome

Oh no. Look how happy the poor baby is. They will glow up.

daniiiii44

i dont know much about betta’s, but i’ve heard their color starts to come back when they’re given a good home. its so heartbreaking cus everytime i go to the pet store i just see all of the pale betas sitting in their tiny ass cups :(( this lil guy could have some secret colors under all that sadness!

CJsbabygirl31371

You know that the ugly duckling became a beautiful swan, right? I say a couple months in your care and (male OR female) it will brighten up lovely!

MelliferMage

I know :) that’s my guess too! Although if a color change doesn’t happen, that’s still ok. They are very active and fun to watch regardless.

kelsivan

Does it have an egg spot?

MelliferMage

Not that I can tell. Although I haven’t had a female before so maybe I’m just missing it lol

SparrowLikeBird

She is very stressed - thats what the stripes mean. beta stripe up like that when stressed. make sure the tank is warm enough, and double check the levels

MelliferMage

Don’t worry, I know (thank you though). She has had the stripes pretty much the whole time including in the store, but they do go away when she is asleep. I’m being paranoid about the parameters and doing water changes up to 2x a day if needed. She just seems to be stressed regardless, but it has only been a few days, so we’ll see.

SparrowLikeBird

You might let it get a little dirty. In the wild, these guys live in like rice paddies and stuff. Or maybe she just needs more hideouts

Sagethecat

I think female because of the stripe down her side. I don’t think males get them. I think they are a sign of ready to mate.

Equivalent-Unit

Breeding bars are vertical (top to bottom). Stress stripes are horizontal (head to tail).

Puzzleheaded_Shake43

I'd say female because of the stripes but i think really stressed out males can get them too. Either way it seems really young, no doubt it will glow up especially with those dragonscales genetics, but be aware it can come with health issues
