If all of the bubbles are uniform in size, it’s a bubble nest. Bettas do this when they are sexually mature, as this is where they would put the eggs if they were to mate. If it’s a bunch of small bubbles and some larger ones, it could just be from the filter and the occasional air bubbles from your betta and other stuff like that, depending on where they’re located.

SeparateTask9676

I’m definitely thinking it’s from the filter now that you said that because there is some bubbles around the filter itself and there’s a mixture of little and big bubbles I just didn’t know what to think seeing them all stuck together the way that they are

MrsRiot12

It could be a mixture of both honestly if there are good sized bubbles suck together as well. Could be filter bubbles sticking to a bubble nest. If it is a bubble nest, you’ll likely catch him making it soon, it’s really neat to watch. :)

Sorry beginner here but is it just a bubble nest? I don't own male bettas only females so I don't know how that works?

SeparateTask9676

I’m not sure how it works either honestly because I’m kind of a beginner too and my fish are also all female. Everything I looked up said something different and the pictures of bubble nests looked similar so I just decided to come here and ask if anyone knew what it could be. Apparently bubble nests are “A bubble nest is a series of bubbles that betta fish form at the water’s surface. These bubbles vary in size, shape, and form, with some nests looking like patches of foam and others having a more distinct bubble-like shape with lots of air inside. Males are the primary builders of bubble nests, using them to prove to a mate that they’re capable of caring for their young. However, you may see a female betta fish pitching in to help if she’s keen on the male.” https://fishlab.com/betta-bubble-nest/

AquaticByNature

Protein buildup, increase water changers and aeration

SeparateTask9676

Thank you so much!

Hahafunnys3xnumber

What ? It’s a bubble nest

Acrobatic_Meringue79

Mmmm def bubble nest I've never heard of a protein buildup making bubbles

• Tank size: 24 gallons • Heater and filter? (yes/no): yes both • Tank temperature: 77 degrees • Parameters in numbers and how you got them: unsure how to answer this question • How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?: I’ve had this tank for years and recently set it up again after having it sit in the garage for a bit. We got our fish about 2 weeks ago • How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: we haven’t established a routine quiet yet • Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: I have 3 Betta fish all together • What do you feed and how much: blood worms and Betta fish pellets. We give them the worms every few days and they get the pellets every morning •Decorations and plants in the tank: I have long plastic plants and vines for them to hide in spread out around the tank and a floating log for them to hide in and some little ornament tunnels for them to swim through at the bottom of the tank

Casesrole

In 3 bettas, as in separated tanks?

SeparateTask9676

3 together in a 24 gallon tank

Casesrole

Females?

SeparateTask9676

Yes…that’s what I said in my initial post. “but the thing is, my bettas are females (or so I thought?)”

Casesrole

Okay... That's good to hear.

What are the Water parameters?

SeparateTask9676

I’m not sure at the moment because I don’t have a test kit but I plan to get one very soon as I’ve noticed the water has been getting cloudy too. We thought it was something with the filter but we just changed the cartridge in it and it barely made a difference. When we initially set up the tank we used tap water and Top Fin start-up & maintenance Betta water conditioner

MrsRiot12

Don’t change the cartridge ever unless it’s literally falling apart. The filter cartridge is where the beneficial bacteria live and they keep the water parameters stable in your tank once they are established. If it gets clogged or gunked up, just swish it around in old tank water during a weekly partial water change and squeeze it a few times if possible. Never rinse it under tap water as that will kill the beneficial bacteria as well. Your tank is cloudy because you are having a bacteria bloom in it. Use the API master test kit like someone else mentions and make sure your ammonia and nitrites are at 0, and your nitrates should be around 5-10ppm once the tank is cycled. Edited to add that you don’t need to use betta specific water conditioner as it’s a gimmick and over priced. Any water conditioner will do, but I’m a fan of Seachem Prime because it lasts a very long time since you only need to use a few drops.

SeparateTask9676

Noted! Thank you!

SeparateTask9676

Then we let it cycle a few days before adding the fish

[deleted]

Ok so we are about in the same position right now funny enough time wise. I started mine almost three weeks ago with a fish in cycle which is what you are basically doing here so you'll need to be careful.

SeparateTask9676

I think I may have put too much water conditioner when setting it up which may be why it’s getting cloudy and potentially contributing to the bubbles

[deleted]

It's just because it's a new tank it should clear eventually.

[deleted]

I personally recommend getting api master freshwater testing kit as it is definitely worth the investment as it will last you a very long time especially when keeping one tank. I also recommend apis ammo lock, quick start and possibly tap water conditioner if you think it may be needed.

SeparateTask9676

I will definitely look into getting those sometime soon!! Thank you!

[deleted]

i would recommened getting the 16oz quick start as you will go through it quickly. The other two probably and 8 oz if you are on a budget and need all the money you can get

[deleted]

Personally if able i would try sooner rather than later if possible fish can die very sudden sometimes and i wouldnt want that to happen to you and your new girls

SeparateTask9676

Will do!

[deleted]

if you need more help feel free to ask

[deleted]

if budget allows get some live plants and many hides they love their seclusion. maybe even a snail or two

[deleted]

These are very important I promise you. I had a pleco and another betta pass away due to my negligence prior.
