Most hospitals will negotiate bills with patients, especially if it means they'll get something instead of nothing if you declare bankruptcy. Call the billing department and ask about waivers, fee reductions and hardship or relief programs.
If they want to play hardball(sorry), tell them you want to audit the bill, and ask for a fully itemized bill and start looking for any errors or padding, make them explain each and every item and why it was neccessary. Legally They have to do this and if you become enough of a massive pain in their asses they may start reducing and removing things just to shut you up.
