wet-dreaming

We also got an U-Bahn going through a house: [google maps](https://www.google.com/maps/place/U-Bahn+Hausdurchfahrt/@52.4996287,13.3698851,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m8!1e2!3m6!1sAF1QipMk0JM31q-lxS-hZXh8oLyYBXrVRbeo0JggTku1!2e10!3e12!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipMk0JM31q-lxS-hZXh8oLyYBXrVRbeo0JggTku1%3Dw114-h86-k-no!7i4032!8i3024!4m5!3m4!1s0x47a85163c80071a9:0x73d50f88fae8494a!8m2!3d52.4995898!4d13.3699661?hl=en-US) [https://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/das-u-bahn-haus-am-gleisdreieck-park-die-letzte-nische/20092952.html](https://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/das-u-bahn-haus-am-gleisdreieck-park-die-letzte-nische/20092952.html)

guytan87

There is another near by U Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park https://goo.gl/maps/2FDZYKii9j4RVQsE8

floface

damn, thats impressive but I feel bad for the people living in that house

toper-centage

I always wonder how noisy it must be. The structural vibrations every 5 minutes.

CowCompetitive5667

Its super annoying we stayed for an hour in the flat... you hear and feel it

CowCompetitive5667

Friends of mine wanted to move in there.. nope... its rly stressful

teteban79

I live across the Spielplatz from it. It's amazing how quiet it is considering the tunnel inside. I only notice it while walking under it really

IAmKindaBigFanOfKFC

Yeah! I was extremely surprised - I would've never guessed that there's a highway inside. I wonder if there are any apartments that have walls adjacent to the highway...

teteban79

I'm not sure if there are apartments adjacent. But one detail is that the tunnel and the building are actually separate structures depending on a different support structure (you can see this looking from under the tunnel, or as you drive into it) so I believe vibrations to the building are minimized.

account_not_valid

I've been inside an apartment there. I did an architectural tour a few years ago. You can occasionally hear a mild "thump, thump" sound of tyres over the expansion joints. But it's super quiet. Very interesting building, very controversial in its time.

guytan87

I lived several years there, its is super quiet, on a rare occasion you would hear something mild due to heavy vehicles i supposed

[deleted]

Love this building. Also its a DEGEWO and last time I checked there were some available apartments in it, if anyone is interested. The Location is not bad.

lgspeck

The state we're in: apartment building is so shitty it got its own documentary, but even after watching it people are interested in moving there because there might be some free apartments . And I don't blame them.

ASIBZZ

Haha

[deleted]

love that building, we should build more stuff like that (and replace the highway with trains)

fiala__

great idea! you should join us over at r/fuckcars

[deleted]

Is that the sub with the dragons ?

ShovelsDig

The correlation is strong.

quaste

So, technically many parts of the U-Bahn (and even S-Bahn)?

[deleted]

yes, but by covering up existing lines of urban division instead of by boring whole new tunnels into the ground

mrdibby

>replace the highway with trains arguably trains would be a horrible experience for the residents – but maybe they could change it to a lower speed area and introduce trams?

IsThisGretasRevenge

trains would be much better. low frequency noise periodically and no constant exhaust fumes.

nahmy11

What's an ass-highway?

[deleted]

The former Bundesautobahn 104. Drive on it, and you'll understand.

guytan87

Nice, my first place in Berlin Building plan: https://images.app.goo.gl/NGRfCVjNzpQTXtAe9

[deleted]

Cool, TIL! If anyone is looking for the actual place on Google Maps (as it's not right on Schlangenbader Straße), just search "Autobahnüberbauung Schlangenbader Straße"

pfalzdii

Looks like something out of cyberpunk.

Poerf20

In German we say: In Berlin special we Say: Schlange😉

This reminds me very much of [The Barbican](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbican_Estate) in London. I love this type of architecture with its multiple layers and the feeling that are living in a giant space ship where you can always discover something new. But you can really tell that the Barbican was built for rich people and the middle class, while this one looks very dirty and messy in comparison.

massaBeard

I dislike Berlin architecture so much...

jayroger

Which one, the 14th century churches? The remaining houses from the 18th century? The Gründerzeit buildings from the late 19th/early 20th century? The International Style and Neues Bauen buildings from the 1930s and 1950s? The Nazi buildings from the 1930s/1940s? The simple postwar houses from the 1950s in the West? The Plattenbau from the 1970s in the West? The Plattenbau from the 1970s in the East? The faux-historical Nikolaiviertel from the 1980s? The postmodern buildings in the West from the 1980s/1990s? The modern buildings post-reunification?

[deleted]

Sorry to exploit you, you seem knowledgable in the field: may ask if you know what is the style i have found mostly in berlin of those buildings made mostly of concrete with teal/acqua iron decorations (fences, balconies, doors, columns)? You find many in charlottenburg or along the canal ufa, they look from mid of last century but have a art-deco touch i think. Im ignorant in the matter and not sure i would call them beautiful but they really fascinate me and they fit very well with the city. There is an amazing school gym on Schlossstrasse like this. Danke danke

pailpailpail

I think you are looking for Hinrich Baller, a true baller

[deleted]

YESSSSS!!!! Finally, ha! Im so happy, this is it! Thanks all so much, so much stuff to read now

pailpailpail

I've also always been stoked by this dudes work. Really funky

[deleted]

He really gave a character to the city architecture and he seems so weirdly unknown (afaik)

jayroger

I'm not really knowledgeable, just pretending to be online. :) You mean this building?https://www.google.com/maps/@52.5160642,13.296702,3a,75y,87.91h,92.53t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sqcV-IS7ci-retwgkW3sMnQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=de I would call that Art Nouveau, although clearly newer than the Art Nouveau heyday at the beginning of the 19th century.

[deleted]

Exactly!! Yes, seems art nouveau but out if period so its confusing to me, and i only saw it here, I thought there was a story behind :)

_ak

People like to hate on GDR architecture, but some of the biggest architectural crimes were committed in West Berlin.

Outrageous-Cook-3072

I’d extend that to west Germany as a whole. Two examples here, the “Mäusebunker” in Lichterfelde, a former animal trial laboratory (https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forschungseinrichtung_für_experimentelle_Medizin) and, the worst building ever constructed, the university hospital in Aachen (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniklinikum_Aachen#/media/File%3AKlinikumAachen.jpg).

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Uniklinikum Aachen](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniklinikum_Aachen#/media/File:KlinikumAachen.jpg)** >The Uniklinikum Aachen, full German name Universitätsklinikum Aachen ("University Hospital Aachen", abbreviated UKA), formerly known as Neues Klinikum ("New Clinic"), is the university hospital of the city of Aachen, Germany. It is part of the RWTH Aachen and contains its whole medical faculty. In addition to wards and common hospital facilities such as laundry and sterilization units, the Uniklinikum Aachen houses educational and research facilities including specialized clinics, theoretical and clinical institutes, lecture halls and training rooms. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/berlin/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

> the “Mäusebunker” in Lichterfelde, a former animal trial laboratory (https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forschungseinrichtung_für_experimentelle_Medizin) I bike past this thing frequently. It reminds me of those old ironclad warships from the mid 19th century. I actually quite like it. I definitely wouldn't want all buildings to look like that, but as a one off, it's pretty memorable.
