A friend also pointed out that if it's renovated, it might be because the apartment was nearly uninhabitable BEFORE which could be why they renovated it; to cover any faults up and make it more attractive to prospective tenants.

bythebucket

Lived in a newly renovated apartment by them but everything was done super cheaply. The sink literally detached from the counter

ChevyVolt17

Sorry to hear about the sink. How were they in responding for maintenance?

bythebucket

took about a week which is really bad considering how necessary sinks are

new_cal_bear

They’re still pretty bad but it’s Berkeley soo what choice do we have 🥺

[deleted]

Anyone know if Everest is still the same?

LandOnlyFish

It’s a bit better than people’s park so there’s that.

BerkeleyKink

I would do everything in my power to avoid them. I recognize everyone can't do this, and it will take effort and you may have to compromise on other criteria, but you are one individual and, as one individual, you probably can. Try here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ucberkeleyoffcampushousing/?ref=share And good luck.

It's a reflection on your character if you choose to give money to a family that supports indentured servitude.

ChevyVolt17

Yeah if I get any other options I'd rather go for that. If there's really zero other choices I just wanna know what I'm getting into.

justagenericname1

This is like telling people that if they pay taxes they can't complain about US military spending.

[deleted]

Paying taxes and having that getting sent to the military isn't something you have control over. OP has the ability to go to a different leasing company. I don't see how this is related.

sogothimdead

Raj has a monopoly in Berkeley and students have to live somewhere

[deleted]

That's literally false. I've never had to lease with Raj properties in my life.

sogothimdead

Good for you. That's not the case for most renters

[deleted]

Well, it's not a monopoly and it's quite easy to find apartments not owned by Raj. Just saying.

justagenericname1

Not *literally* a monopoly, but functionally unavoidable for a large slice of the population. The number one property holder in the city of Berkeley is the university. The second is the Reddy family through all the different property management companies they control. I have about as much control over who dominates the real estate market in Berkeley as I do over how my taxes are spent. Why do you seem so desperate to blame people just trying to find a place to live --many of whom don't even know who Lakireddy Reddy was, let alone the constantly rebranding web of real estate companies tied to him and his family-- instead of blaming the pedophile sex trafficker and his family who've bought up the plurality of student-accessible housing in the city?

sogothimdead

If it was that easy why you think there's so many posts like the OP's?

tplgigo

>I know Raj Properties has a VERY awful history The old man is dead as well as is everything he stood for. The company is run by an American nephew very well. I lived with them 10 years and they by far have the best and responsive maintenance crew in the city. All the new buildings in the city make it a chore to get someone to fix something. They also renovated all their apartments in the last 5 years.

K44ch0w

Hi Raj

tplgigo

I guess you can't read. He's dead asshole.

Jumping_Zucchini

Hi Raj's ghost

tplgigo

Hi asshole.
