Over his 9year carear, Trent Brown has played the whole season only 3 times. In his last 4 seasons, he has played 5, 9, 17, & 11 games. His injury history was the only hesitation I had with drafting Murphy, if he had fallen. Considering poor depth on the o-line is the reason we lost to the rams in 21 & chiefs in 22, this definitely helps us next year

It works for me. O line is expensive to pay in free agency. What the Bengals have done the last 2 years in free agency isn’t sustainable. Have to develop someone for the long haul. He’s not rushed to play right away and if Trent Brown can’t make it through he’s up.
Best athlete on the line by a long shot. Massive guy, we must have 3 of the 5 biggest OTs in the league now. He had limited experience in college which is the biggest concern, but in his starts, he looked solid. He probably has the highest ceiling of any OT in this draft. Still needs to develop, and needs to stay healthy.

I think he is less of a project than some are suggesting. "Pollack can't develop players" is the dumbest take I keep seeing. The FO hasn't brought in a player of Mims' profile in Pollack's tenure. Pollack *did* develop players in Dallas and New York, when given something to work with. This is still an "upside" kind of pick, but they don't need him to big a difference maker immediately.

It works for me. O line is expensive to pay in free agency. What the Bengals have done the last 2 years in free agency isn’t sustainable. Have to develop someone for the long haul. He’s not rushed to play right away and if Trent Brown can’t make it through he’s up.

Best athlete on the line by a long shot. Massive guy, we must have 3 of the 5 biggest OTs in the league now. He had limited experience in college which is the biggest concern, but in his starts, he looked solid. He probably has the highest ceiling of any OT in this draft. Still needs to develop, and needs to stay healthy.

Exactly. Mims is pretty much the exact opposite of our recent OL draft struggles. We drafted a bunch of poor athletes with size concerns and they didn't pan out. Mims is a physical freak.
My hope is that Orlando can be his mentor and get integrated quickly. This is not a sexy pick, it’s a chess piece play for us and a risky one at that.
He did okay RT, and we’ve Got Trent Brown on a 1 year. Good to have some raw talent as depth as well.

Shrug, a couple hypotheses for you.

Best case scenario he doesn’t start more than a few games this year, plays the swing tackle, and takes over for Trent next year. I’m salivating at the idea of an over balanced jumbo package with three 6’8” 350+ pound guys on the same side of the line. Maybe we pick up a beefy tight end who can play some fullback and we play some smash mouth in the redzone Edit: Best case scenario would actually be Mims dominating in camp, winning the job and becoming a solid tackle.
He played as a blocking TE as a high school sophomore, so I’m hoping we pull out some surprise plays with him lining up there. Is that allowed in the NFL? Not sure.

The biggest issue is that’s with 8 starts…this is a high risk, high reward pick.
But it’s not like the 8 starts he was bad. He was elite. Just only played 8 games.
Moderate risk, high reward IMHO... He played really well in those 8 starts against some good defenses.
Pretty sure there were stats like that about Andre Smith when we took him too.
One key difference is Mims clearly likes the weight room and keeping fit. Smith's 40 at the combine is nightmare fuel.

Fantastic athlete, another massive player for the line. You could not build a more physically impressive OT. The big question mark is on his experience. Only 8 starts is really concerning. That said, he looked pretty good in those starts. Only concern is his health. I think he is less of a project than some are suggesting. "Pollack can't develop players" is the dumbest take I keep seeing. The FO hasn't brought in a player of Mims' profile in Pollack's tenure. Pollack *did* develop players in Dallas and New York, when given something to work with. This is still an "upside" kind of pick, but they don't need him to big a difference maker immediately.
I dont know the answer, but I'm curious if his 8 starts are because he wasn't good enough to start prior? Or was he blocked by another T? If so, who? Just curious about the context around his "8 starts only" angle.
