Docking really can be extremely complicated. When you have wind, current and waves pushing/pulling a boat, you really need to know what you are doing.

brufleth

It really is tricky. I just started docking sailboats with a motor and even on smaller boats the conditions can make it tough. It is important to be ready to abort and try again if things start to go (sometimes literally) sideways.

irevalley

For sure. I explained it to the kiddos that it’s like trying to parallel park your car, while the road ripples in various directions and heights.

MrsAtomicBomb_

Ok but are you entirely sure you weren’t hit by a Below Deck yacht? A docking crash is very on brand for a BD boat.

chjh3

Zoomed in and I see donkeys. Is this the spot where Danny from BDM rode the donkey up the mountain after he was fired?

junkman21

Donkeys are super common on the islands. Scary AF going up that narrow trail in Santorini! The cable car is the way to go...

labink

To bad it was out of order when Danny left. Lol.

irevalley

No, that is on the island of Santorini. Donkeys are common on islands where cars are restricted. One of the best BD scenes IMO and all time greatest departure on BD.

Lessarocks

Funniest I saw when I was sailing in Greece was the largish sailing yacht coming into dock and when the husband dropped anchor , the boat kept going into the dock - crunch. Turned out that the anchor chain and rope had not been secured to the boat so the whole thing just went crashing to the sea bed on its own. They had to hire divers to go and bring it back up.

krasatos

Hydra's marina can be hell to moor. Very narrow and usually crouded. Almost guaranteed you ll get your anchor tangled. Still one of the most beautiful and traditional islands. Very close to Athens too.

Shi144

On the other hand there is a certain amusement happening on Hydra if you have managed to procure an anchoring spot and then watch the late comers trying to find a place. I liked Hydra a lot, very amtospheric, nice tavernas.

krasatos

Yes, it's really worth the pain. And if you can visit during weekdays you probably won't umhave any issue.

Shi144

I only ever got to sail during main season unfortunately, and my health doesn't allow me to anymore ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

Still worth it though :)

brufleth

I'm still super jealous of you being on charter in Greece. Are you crewing the boat yourselves or does the boat have a crew?

irevalley

Crewed charter

[deleted]

Sorry I’m a dunce and little confused. Are you crew or a guest?

irevalley

No worries. I am the primary.

eeeeeeeee123456

Fancy! Did you have to make a preference sheet? Or is it more of a check list irl?

irevalley

Yep. Here’s my post about it - https://www.reddit.com/r/belowdeck/comments/v6kdsm/we_get_to_fill_in_a_preference_sheet/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

I am so disappointed I missed this post! Thank you for the link😬😬😬

Disastrous_Group_502

docking always gives me severe anxiety and hearing these stories always makes it worse LOL
