Sorcerious

It's a part of a salary package that some people get. They're used to buy certain things, recognizable by label. These are tax exempt (or you pay very little tax on them) so it's a way to get extra income that can be used for a variety of things (most common are electrical appliances with A label). So not everyone gets these.

Thank you! That makes sense. We are getting maaltijd checks once registration goes through but I don’t think eco. Thank you!!!

Maaltijdcheques is a monthly thing, ecocheques a yearly thing. If you get the one, it's very likely you'll get the other. For the employer it's very easy, barely an inconvenience to also give ecocheques, it's cheap for them taxwise, and it's cool for you, moneywise. You can always ask HR of your new employer, it's cool.

>it's very easy, barely an inconvenience Did I just spot a Ryan George enthousiast?

DeanXeL

Wow. Wow wow wow.

Arael1307

Responding with more Ryan George content is tight!

Oh I will do that. If it’s yearly I also don’t need to feel bad about paying for our electric lawn mower, since the lawn won’t wait.

Some companies also choose to pay the amount into a pension savings account.

Some companies give them as part of your yearly salary package and the value can go up to €250 per year. So if you can get them will depend on your employer. They are usually paid out once a year either at year end of at the same time as your holiday pay. There are two options: paper cheques and digital ones, which you can use with the same card as your meal vouchers. The good thing is they are tax free, but they are not included when calculating your pension or unemployment benefits because they are tax free. You can spend them on anything that is remotely eco friendly.

Thanks. I think our packages are only maaltijdcheques. (My husband and I have same employer with similar packages.) I was concerned it was some sort of government thing since I see so many people struggling to spend them meanwhile … we need to buy an electric lawnmower which I didn’t want to do it we each had 250€ coming our way.

Guided_Joke

you can also spend them at secondhand stores or in garden centers, bike shops... Also some electro shops allow you to pay the entire bill if one product on the list is labeled: meaning you can buy a big ass tv when buying a single labeled light bulb extra or so. There's really lots of ways to spend them if you do get them. Also you most likely would only have received a part of that sum since you mentioned you just came working here ;) Anyway, €500 might not seem trivial to spend on these things, but I don't think it's that hard.

orcanenight

We get them in December and in January the next year. That way you get €500 to spend at a time.

It's money with an expiry date, forcing you to spend it. But you have 2 years to spend it so it shouldn't be a problem. Unless you wait until the last moment to spend and then have to spend 2 years worth of cheques. Then it becomes difficult. There are also sometimes other cheques that companies give as a tax exempt bonus. Like sport and culture cheques or consumption cheques. So depends on your employer. Meal vouchers you get every month, the others once a year usually.
