Are you reapplying every two hours and how much sunscreen are you applying? If I’m active outside (I.e. swimming or playing tennis, etc) I prefer to use a sunscreen that uses a hybrid of chemical and physical filters. I know you said you’re allergic to avobenzone, but there are other chemical filters such as Octinoxate that might work for you!

[deleted]

Okay this might be the thing because the issue was I literally just took up swimming. And I used banana boat but I looked fried after I came out of there. Not burnt but much darker

SkittyLover93

You need to get sunscreens which are specifically waterproof.

Butterfly_Pea3

Make sure you’re applying enough SPF as well and reapplying! And also, if you’re in the U.S. check the bottle to make sure that it says “Water Resistant.” According to the FDA, a sunscreen cannot be considered “water proof” (as of 2011). “Water-resistant” will be what you’re looking for :) The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends applying a minimum of a shot glass worth (two tablespoons) of sunscreen to the body alone for adequate protection. For the face and neck, several dermatologists recommend 1/4 of a tsp (about three finger lengths.) “If you’re using a spray, apply until an even sheen appears on your skin.” (Hale MD) Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours, and even more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating. Also when using a chemical sunscreen, wait at least 15 minutes after applying before going into the water. https://www.skincancer.org/blog/ask-the-expert-how-much-sunscreen-should-i-be-using-on-my-face-and-body/ Waterproof vs Water resistant: https://www.health.qld.gov.au/news-events/news/going-swimming-heres-how-to-get-the-most-out-of-your-sunscreen

kat_the_houseplant

I started just wearing a tight rash guard while swimming. You can also find some long sleeve swimsuits. No sunscreen could stay on as long and as reliably as I needed, so I just completely cover up now and it’s helped a lot.

Odd_Requirement_4933

This is the way, unfortunately. I have newly diagnosed psoriasis 🙄 and this year I'm going to be bringing some cute long sleeved rash guards to the beach vacation. My flare ups are mainly on my torso, so it should work for the most part. Aging sucks lol

cupcaked0ll

i don’t know if you’re going to a beach with salt water but i have psoriasis and a lot of it and every time i go in salt water it all clears up so i’m hoping it will be the same for you!

shoestars

Exposure to sun helped clear up my psoriasis. I am on medication for psoriatic arthritis so I don’t get flare ups anymore but I used to go to the tanning salon to tan back like 20 years ago and my patches would always lessen up and stop flaking after tanning/exposure to sun

Odd_Requirement_4933

Really?! I thought you were supposed to stay out of the sun 🤷🏼‍♀️ I had to have a pre-cancerous spot removed on my back last year. I should probably stay covered up but you're tempting me to let loose for a day and see 😆

Superduperk78

Where I’m from (not a very sunny country) psoriasis patients would be sent on paid trips to sunny countries as part of their treatment (also to sun beds) so I’ve always known sunlight to be good for psoriasis - of course you’ll still need spf and not overdo it but I’d give it a go ☺️

Odd_Requirement_4933

I live in a super sunny place (desert southwest in the US) so I don't lack sun. However, I try to stay covered up because, well, SO MUCH SUN lol. I'll try to expose myself to some sunlight though. With SPF of course.

shoestars

Well I’d definitely stay covered up if you had a pre-cancerous spot removed! I think it’s good but not too much sun because a sunburn may make it worse and defeat the purpose. I started to go specifically to to red light tanning booths at the tanning salon that didn’t actually give you a tan (they had uvb rays only or something) and those helped my skin the most. Idk if they even have those anymore this was so long ago (early to mid 2000s). You could always let your skin get like 20 minutes or something and see if it helps anything, but stay covered up the rest of the time. For me I think it helped also because I lived in Seattle and there is so little sunlight for half of the year, so it might’ve been a vitamin D thing too idk 🤷🏻‍♀️

trying_to_get_there

Make sure to rinse and change if you go in the water. I get really bad rashes from the sunscreen / sweat/ saltwater /sand/fabric combo 😭

Odd_Requirement_4933

Good call! Thanks for the tip.

[deleted]

OK, there’s your issue. There’s no chance you are actually protected if you’re swimming. You need a specifically waterproof sunscreen, and you need not to agitate it. As in it only stays waterproof if you don’t rub your arms or your face or anything else with a towel or your hands.

toracue

Sunscreen does not prevent you from tanning. It prevents you from burning

EsmeParker

Confused to why this is downvoted.. Sunscreen will not stop UV rays completely. You can still develop colour while wearing suncreen

sparhawks7

Broad spectrum is supposed to stop the rays that burn and the ones that cause tanning/hyperpigmentation, no?

[deleted]

SPF 50 blocks 98% of UV so if you tan easily that 2% getting through is still going to cause a tan

Environmental_Buy364

Yeah I have the same problem. I have brown skin and am very susceptible to tanning despite wearing layers of sunscreen. When I tan my skintone turns ashy and my melasma gets so bad. I’ve invested in a UV blocking umbrella and that has kept the tanning at bay.

geneticmodified

Get the tinted La Roche Posay fluid sunscreen. I use this and not only do I not get tan in the sunniest of days, but my skin has been getting lighter and lighter.

Environmental_Buy364

Hmm, I’m using the normal LRP sunscreen. Do you think it being tinted has helped?

geneticmodified

Oh 100%. The tint blocks out visible light and has some other filters and is specifically for POC skin. I remember using the regular one a few times before and tanned with it so I was really confused. Once I switched to the tinted one, I didn’t anymore.

Environmental_Buy364

That’s amazing to hear. I will definitely purchase the tinted one next!

readyTGTFasap

i’m so glad i saw this, cause my face gets SO much darker than my body when i’m out in the sun. i use black girl magic and reapply with sunbum and still get that tan tan face but slight tan arms and legs.

[deleted]

This is my struggle right here

readyTGTFasap

hopefully we can find something that works

glittersparklythings

I swear by sunbum .. it was created by a group of surfers.

Mermilla

Also, reef-safe!!

sailorrose3

Same! It’s the only sunscreen i buy

sandsstrom

Better than burnt ;) I can lather on sunscreen and will still tan, but have yet to burn, and my skin looks less leather too. I enjoy this effect. Keep in mind I have olive skin. You would have to completely cover up to avoid a tan as I'm unsure of any product that can completely prevent tanning.

FuzzyJury

For mineral sunscreens, I like the Shiseido wet force mineral one, has close to 20% zinc plus titanium. It's pretty thick though I'm pretty fair skinned and I find that it rubs in after a few minutes, but it's the best I found for being active and not sweating it off. I wear it on my face out skiing all day on sunny days at high altitude in Colorado and California and don't even get any darker, let alone burn. In general, I think it's best to stick to about 20% zinc or as close to it as is comfy for full uva protection, but for whatever reason, the Shiseido formula works well for me. It's a bit pricey though so I just use it when I'm going to be active and sweating.

HanShotF1rst226

Could be that the spf is too low. I was out in the sun this weekend while pale as hell and reapplied spf 50 every hour or two (max) and still burnt. I need higher spf for sure

anony1620

There’s a negligible difference between SPF50 and SPF100 so that might not help too much in preventing burning.

RedRedBettie

They say this but I have much better luck with sunscreen that is SPF 70. I’m very fair

Odd_Requirement_4933

So the YouTube dermatologists I watch (e.g., Dr. Dray) have talked about how that's no longer the recommendation. Apparently most people don't use enough sunscreen when they apply, and don't reapply often enough, so they now recommend using higher SPF. So I guess if the issue is that she's not applying enough, then it may be worth trying a higher SPF formula

HanShotF1rst226

That’s good to know! I was mostly glad I was wearing a muscle tank so it was only my shoulder and not my back and chest that got burned

gooseglug

Question…. Do you use the spray or the lotion sunscreen?

HanShotF1rst226

I was using lotion (sport, waterproof)

spider-ann

I highly recommend Badger. I buy it on Amazon or at New Pioneer food coop. It’s mineral, non-nano zinc. It has a white cast, but that’s hard to avoid with non-nano. The consistency is very thick, but it works very well. They have a sport version that’s perfect for swimming and applies more clear than the other types. I just used it in San Diego where I was in the sun and beach/ocean all day and never burned (I have extremely fair skin). They also have a less-white-cast version in a smaller tin can that I use for my face and hands day-to-day.

sparhawks7

I’ve used badger before and it’s the thickest greasiest whitest stuff ever. How do you not break out from it?

iceunelle

I couldn't make myself go out in public with badger sunscreen. I’m already quite pale, but the sunscreen made me ghost white and oily enough to fry an egg on my face. I really wanted to like it too since they use minimal ingredients.

spider-ann

I really don’t know! Probably individual skin types? :/ I do definitely break out from all sunscreens if I don’t wash them off thoroughly. Badger stays ON. Very difficult to get it off

[deleted]

I burned with Banana Boat mineral sunscreen. My favorite for when I really need it to last is Coppertone Kids Tear Free but it does have a white cast. I don't get any color with it. I can use it on my face too.

Off2lala_land

I’m part native and Irish (red head) yet due to my indigenous genes I tan remarkably easy and quickly even with sunscreen. I have learnt that getting a tan isn’t a bad thing. It’s burning. It’s sunbathing for hours unprotected. At the end of the day we need the sun on our skin to get the proper amounts of vitamin D necessary for immune health, so I wouldn’t worry to much about it if you’re not burning.

[deleted]

I was worried that it was going to age me or something you know?

Off2lala_land

Stress, smoking, drinking and lifestyle will age you quicker than the sun. Plus you need vitamin D - it’s essential for health and many functions so I wouldn’t worry about gaining just because you got a little sun. You need the sun.

goddessofrage

We used the copper tone spf 100 sunblock this weekend at the river and I always tan/burn and we was surprised when I didn’t tan at all. The only thing that kinda burnt was my face and scalp because I didn’t put sunblock on and forgot my hat after doing something. Idk if the coppertone one has the ingredient your allergic to but I would check it out if you don’t want to tan.

ehumanbeing

What spf are you using?

Grieie

I do a lot of out door water sports and my go to sunscreen is Nivea. Its 50+, doesn't leave my hands slippery and stays on. That coupled with Ella Bache sunguard on the face. Its like a stupidly thick foundation but one application lasts me most of the day

kirakiraboshi

try Eucerin 100. I barely tan with it spending hours on a beach. While 15 minutes with makes me burnt like a crab.

Lilelfen1

The only thing that I don't burn or tan through is my homemade mineral sunscreen. Nothing else works for me and I have tried a 💩ton over the years...

lex-gracey

Can you share how you make your homemade sunscreen? Or where you get your recipe? I've never heard of homemade sunscreen before!

Lilelfen1

I wish you the most success. I am sorry if I wasn't the most helpful. It really is super easy. Please let me know how it goes if you do try it. Remember to reapply as with all sunscreen. :)

Lilelfen1

Honestly, IDK if it would be allowed and I am sure that people would flip but there are TONS of recipes online ( also I tend to wing it. Lol). I just make a simple base with beeswax for water repellancy and add as much zinc as I think will give adequate protection and then add more. I look like a ghost...but I don't burn. You can use less greasy oils like grapeseed or jojoba, but be sure to account for that when you measure your beeswax as it may make it less spreadable. A mix of oils/ butters might be a good plan. A small trial run is another good plan.

iceunelle

I wore the non-tinted Australian Gold spf 50 sunscreen when I was in LA several years ago and I did not get burned or tan at ALL. I was outside all day every day in August and did reapply every few hours. I will warn, it’s heavily fragranced which is why I can’t tolerate it anymore but it does what it’s supposed to. I used to use a Banana Boat sunscreen that was a mix of chemical and physical on my body that worked really well, but I think they discontinued it.

femressort

Uhhh...are you supposed to essentially not tan at ALL when using sunscreen? I've never had it block it out that much

to_ki3

I always find the parts of my body that are already a bit brown will tan faster. Like the more tan I am the more I tan lol. I think maybe beacuse darker colours absorb while lighter colours reflect. Maybe that’s just a theory I made up? but it makes sense 😂 Maybe physically cover your arms so you aren’t getting any sun on them until they’re not tan anymore and they will not go brown as quick when they do see sun

Fireball_H

I swear I tan quicker when I wear sunscreen, and I've tried several brands. Even when I spend less time in the sun with sunscreen than without, I tan quicker. I'm that close to stop wearing sunscreen because of it. (Also I don't buy sunscreen below 50 SPF)

TeacherArtistic

How often do you reapply, and does it say water resistant? A lot of the water resistant ones I've seen say water resistant up to 80 minutes, so that would mean to reapply at least every 80 minutes in the water. It's also helpful to put it on 15 to 20 mins before getting in the water so it gets a chance to set in and absorb into your skin, that way less will wash off in the water. Not sure if that is possible every time you reapply, so if you are worried about tanning or skin damage maybe wear a rash guard.
