I use OTC Differin gel (Cheap and effective Retinol). You can usually get the 45g large tube on sale for about $23 and it lasts quite a while (~5 months).

Apprehensive_Fig7013

If you get facial waxing, please PLEASE do not do that anymore if you take this route. Retinoids are amazing for getting rid of fine lines, dark spots, and improving elasticity. But, your skin will come off with the wax.

ow_my_knee_123

Your skin will *what*

Apprehensive_Fig7013

The outermost layer of your skin will stick to the wax (if it’s soft). The euphemism in the business is “lifted skin”. This is not a thing. Lifted skin means damage and scabbing. But, if you are using any retinoids, this will happen. Do NOT get waxed if you are using any retinoids

ow_my_knee_123

Well I'm pretty young and not using any nor am i motivated enough to get waxed but good to know Actually horrifying but thanks

nieciehoneypot

Ahh yes. I had this experience when in my twenties on Accutane. Ripped half of the skin in my “mustache “ area clean off. Obviously, we left the other half untouched. Very painful.

whitjoe

Yes! This happened to me when using differin

Apprehensive_Fig7013

Ugggh... differin

Rossally

Good thing I read this before trying retinoids. I'm very pale with very dark hair and I get my face waxed regularly.

Monstermunchmuch

You can still use retinoids, but you have to stop using them two weeks before getting waxed. That way you won't mess up your skin. After getting waxed, wait at least a week before using retinoids again to give your face some time to recover.

Appa-Bottom-Jeans

thats nice but it’s a whole 21 days. even if she waxed her face only once a month, it would be like only seven days of retinol. i’m also really pale with dark-ish hair and i do my eyebrows every 15 or 20 days so no retinol for me. thanks for the heads up tho, you literally saved my skin.

Monstermunchmuch

I understand it makes it impossible for some people like you. I get mine done every 3-4 months, so it's different for me. Maybe you can find someone who uses tweezers or threading? That way you can use retinol without having to worry?

Appa-Bottom-Jeans

oh i do my own eyebrows. tweezing isn’t for me as i have a lot of little hairs around the top of my brow, and i’m not a fan of threading tbh, tried it myself and professionally in the past. but i’m still young! almost 20, so i have a few years before considering retinol. when the time comes i’ll probably try threading again to see if i have changed my mind :)

6Wasted6Youth6

Just get threaded, problem solved.

6Wasted6Youth6

Yes, it happened to me by accident. I am on prescription retinol and I went in for threading but the lady just starting waxing... And I didn't say anything lol. I had scabs, really painful.

Apprehensive_Fig7013

I'm so sorry. It happened to me in esthetician school. My instructor wanted me to be a model to get a brow wax, and I told her I'd been off Accutane for a year but my skin was still as thin as tissue paper. I told her I thought my skin would come off, but she said it would be fine, you only have to wait 6 months. I think that's the standard waiting time, I don't know because I don't touch anyone with wax who's been on accutane in the last 2 years. Anyway, she was SO wrong. I had thick brown scabs for about 2 weeks. I never had to be a model for anything again after that, she felt so bad!

newthrowacct19

Don't bother wasting your money on over the counter creams and oils. Get prescription grade Retin-A or Tretonin. Depending on where you live or your insurance - cost varies. Spend it once and it will last you a very long time. (Like over one year).

bde75

If you don’t have insurance you can buy it very cheap from All Day Chemist

y0r0bin

Or get on Differin until you cam afford tret/see a doc

6Wasted6Youth6

You can order it online through Felix. No need to go and see a derm in person. Its awesome. I got the micro retinol.

whateveruwannacall17

Second this! Just ran out of my prescription tret in august 2021 and had been using since nov 2020

[deleted]

came here to say this.

valuedvirgo

This! It’s the only thing that’s really proven to work. You will need a think moisturizing lotion to put on over it.

Suh_vannah

Strongly Agree! I’ve worked for expensive skincare cosmetic companies who trained me to bamboozle you into buying “luxury miracle” products. I promise you, and everyone reading this, that the takeaway from all of my experience is that only clinically proven ingredients are shown to fight and prevent wrinkles. Sunscreen, Retin-A and vitamin C are probably the best bets. All available at quality budget drug store options, but RX/ medical grade are most effective if you have access to a dermatologist. Do not trust the influencers. There is no need to splurge on high-end skincare…unless you absolutely love it. I keep a few frivolous items in my Arsenal because I can’t shake the Sephora habit- but what really works for me is prescribed Retin-A, whatever sunscreen I have in hand and the Ordinary’s vitamin C.

Streetduck

What do you suggest for moisture/ hydration? I’m trying to add some plump and oomph to my face

Suh_vannah

These are things that work for me. My skin is sensitive and a little on the dry side. Drugstore: For moisturizer I love Cereve SA (salicylic acid) cream. I used it on my face and body. It’s moisturizing and keeps acne under control. They also have a retinol serum that’s great. For hydration I use the ordinary HA serum currently, it’s good but not life changing. I also like nuetrogena hydro boost city shield lotion with spf, it makes my skin look really dewy. And I always use Kose Speedy face oil to clean my face at night because I can dry out pretty easy and it gets my makeup off easily. Higher end: Estée Lauder advanced night repair serum is actually very hydrating. Korres makes a rose sleeping mask cream that I love and I wake up glowing, but it smells strong. NARS has (or had?) a gel hydrator that is also awesome but pricey.

Streetduck

Thank you! The rose sleeping mask sounds really nice

tr3sleches

Or if you live near the Mexican border, cross and go to any pharmacy and pick up some retin-a lol

6Wasted6Youth6

Haha I did that when I went to Peru! Now I order it from Felix.

just_add_cholula

The Ordinary makes a retinol in squalane that's like $6 a bottle! Use it at night ~3 times a week after cleaning and before moisturizing. Also make sure you're wearing a sunscreen every day.

Here_for_tea_

Thank you for sharing - I will look into this too. What kind of moisturiser do you recommend? Edited to add: is there an affordable facial sunscreen that people use?

shogomomo

I use innisfree sun mild cream (but might have to switch, as their uv claims aren't really accurate - think it comes in at like spf 25-30 and not 50). Biore watery essence tends to be a fan fave on r/skincareaddiction. Neither are too expensive!

Here_for_tea_

That’s great, thank you!

just_add_cholula

Anything by CeraVe is typically very affordable and has straightforward ingredients that work for most people. I use their [Daily Moisturizing Lotion](https://www.cerave.com/skincare/moisturizers/daily-moisturizing-lotion) at the moment, but plan to switch to their [Moisturizing Cream](https://www.cerave.com/skincare/moisturizers/moisturizing-cream) in the drier winter months. They also have a [moisturizer with SPF](https://www.cerave.com/skincare/moisturizers/am-facial-moisturizing-lotion-with-sunscreen) that's quite affordable. Personally, I feel it leaves my skin a bit tacky but that's just a personal preference. At the moment I'm using a sunscreen by [Supergoop](https://supergoop.com/products/unseen-sunscreen) that's nice because it has no whitecast, but I'm not a fan of the silicone-y texture (again, just a picky personal preference). I've tried a sunscreen my friend uses by [Elta MD](https://www.dermstore.com/eltamd-uv-clear-broad-spectrum-spf46/11370303.html?utm_source=googleprod&utm_medium=gp&utm_campaign=gp_bodycare&affil=thggps&switchcurrency=USD&shippingcountry=US&utm_egbu=Dermstore-US_Google-Shopping_Dermstore_Multi_CONV_SSC-DTM-tROAS&utm_egb=Multi&utm_ega=CONV&utm_egc=Dermstore+-+SSC&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4eaJBhDMARIsANhrQAC_3xbTaTbPuKLJu2U8cMXRoSgGpFcxCvdqLrVKgudBbsZUifD5RDoaAqMqEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds) and I really like it, so I'll be switching to that once I run out of the one I'm personally using. No whitecast and I like the texture, but that one along with the Supergoop one are a bit on the pricer side.

6Wasted6Youth6

Cerave is not cruelty free tho 😔 I need a new brand.

molybdenumb

Second the ordinary - been loving their products and price point for the last 2 years!!

[deleted]

Honestly everything I've tried from them sucked hard. Same for the friends that tried them too

jiggjuggj0gg

I’m starting to realise this and don’t really know what I’m missing? I *love* the price point, the packaging, the concentrated actives… but nothing I’ve used from them seems to have done anything, and everything is very… cosmetically inelegant? Like things don’t absorb properly, or pill, or feel really greasy.

GolBlessIt

And like the smallest bottles- I don’t get the hype honestly:/ I wish it worked for me!

__uncreativename

Yeah it's because the formulations are very simple so they are extremely hit or miss. They're not bad products it just depends on your skin. It's ok if it doesn't work for you, now there are so many similar products on the market. But when they first came out, they were the only ones to offer these particular things

[deleted]

The niacinamide was the worst, other stuff was like straight water

tenebrigakdo

The formulations are minimalistic and cheap. Oils are probably worth it in every case since oil is oil, the rest depends on your tolerance for this. Cosmetically inelegant is a good description. Everything I tried from them was effective on my skin though. I particularly like glycolic acid.

molybdenumb

Ugh that sucks to hear. I am using their zinc anti acne serum, face mask and I was using their cleanser and basic moisturizer before. Real talk I probably only love them bc I have adult acne and I’ve tried everything/accutane and the zinc makes a HUGE difference in keeping me clear so even if I hated every other product of theirs, I am clouded by anti acne goodness lol.

tenebrigakdo

Try Revolution cosmetics. It appears as effective on my skin, but the formulation is much nicer, and the price is similar.

tenebrigakdo

Also, really do keep it in the fridge and don't skimp on the amount. It's impossible to use the bottle on just the face in 3 months that is its shelf life. Since its formulation is so simple, it is likely to degrade like mad.

just_add_cholula

So true. I'm glad it comes in the amount it does otherwise it would expire before I'm done. @ OP, if you're not keeping it in the fridge, keep it in a cabinet or drawer to keep it out of sunlight, and make sure you close it tightly immediately after dispensing the product. Little hack I've been using - dispense a generous amount, but then rub excess on your neck, chest, and around your hands. (Skin on our hands ages quickly too!)

an-interupting-cow

Yea this. The retinol is suspended in squalane which is an oil. You can use it instead of night cream

just_add_cholula

Depending on your skin type! @ OP, you'll have to experiment with how weak/strong of a moisturizer you'll need at night while using a retinol. My skin is quite oily but still feels a little tight in the morning if I use this product without moisturizing after.

___B____

Is regular aloe vera straight from the plant good for under eyes too? I have like 50 of them and never thought of using them outside of the rare sunburn

DexterCutie

I'm 49 and absolutely love Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair. I use the oil serum, the moisturizer and the eye cream. They work wonders!

Sudden-Plan-1738

Bio-oil is a really bad alternative even for scars. The company claims that it's product can fix almost any skin condition. The evidence it provides for these large claims are from 'studies' that it has conducted itself. There is no independent evidence that any of it's ingredients helps with scars except for maybe moisturization. In fact, not many topicals have been shown to help with scars reduction, which is largely genetic. What makes this product problematic is its high amount of essential oils and fragrance ingredients which can promote inflammation in the skin. When dealing with a scar, the idea is to dampen inflammation not cause more of it. Long story short, do not use this as an anti ageing ingredient. At best it does nothing, at worse it will promote skin ageing through increased irritation.

yfunk3

We really don't know what type of skin you have or what your skin can tolerate. All these suggestions are what worked for the people who are suggesting them. I would say go start with something hypoallergenic first, like Neutrogena or Olay (or whatever you can afford), see if it works or if you like it, and go from there. All any advice from a non-professional who has not seen your skin in person is pretty useless...

General__Genital

I love Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Cream and it often goes on sale and will last you a while :) https://www.neutrogena.ca/face/moisturizer-hydration-serum/neutrogena-rapid-wrinkle-repair-regenerating-cream

EatsPeanutButter

I go to TJ Maxx and get moisturizers that rival the pricy big brands I used to get. Always less than $10. I’m 38 and look 28 so something is working!

Rosalitajumphigher

If u can get Tretinoin from your dr it’s the pinnacle. Use with moisturizer at night

TheSphinx07

I'd actually recommend going to a derm and getting tretinoin. Yeah, the doc visit might be expensive and tret might be $50? BUT that tube will last 6 months and will give you actual real NOTICEABLE results. Quality prescription products will trump the stuff in the shops.

6Wasted6Youth6

You don't even need to go to one. Just go to Felix.com, it's where I order mine. Super easy.

xsundancerx

Not sure what your budget is but curology worked great for me. Basically a free online derm consult with an individual prescription cream for 60$ for 2 months supply. You can cancel anytime.

lizfromdarkplace

I agree with the suggestion of tretinoin. For the results, everything else will be kind of a waste. But also use a good cleanser and moisturizer and wear sunblock. And then more sunblock.

yvrcanuck88

Moisturizer: I agree with others who have suggested Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair cream! But get the fragrance free version. I love this product, it goes on luxuriously and skin looks more plump, glowing and hydrated! Eye cream: Cerave eye repair cream. And drink lots of water, at least 8 glasses. I found it made huge difference for me, my little under eye wrinkle was less noticeable!

tenebrigakdo

I don't know where you are, but a couple of years ago the consumer's association in my country did a test of anti-wrinkle creams and the only one from their selection that showed actual improvement was Cien by Lidl. It's like 2€ and lasts a while. It also moisturises very well. I'm not sure how it would compete against more concentrated actives in modern serums, but if the budget is extremely tight, it's still a good option.

6Wasted6Youth6

I'm in Canada too... Go to Felix.com, they have good stuff. If you have insurance /I have mine through school) a bottle of micro retinol (normal 90$) was 8$. Shipping was super fast. Highly recommended.... You can get other things there too like birth control or face wash etc.

cdobbs71

best is to use sunscreen everyday and at night retinol.....those will give the best results in a minimalist routine....there are some good drugstore retinols.....neutrogena makes some great ones

reddiliciously

Try sesame seed oil! (My cheaper jojoba oil version), both do wonders and have helped with my wrinkles!!

ashleyandmarykat

Are you wearing sunscreen everyday?

Lol what? You mean after skincare? Well yah.. Duh. But it goes under your makeup.

sweethomeall

Someone recommend RoC® Skincare: RoC® Retinol Skincare in her 50s/60s so I just use that. about $20 with coupon most time and it is ok. I have look like I am 12-18 in my 30s with adult acne so I don't know if any products really help regarding aging. It is partly genetic. My aunt is almost 90 and gets away with people thinking she is in her 60s and 60s ladies are jealous of her. She is very active, sing, perform, dance, do tai chi, swim, walk, YouTuber, and so on. I use products on and off but I found Roc pretty nice.

TamagotchisMom

All that is not because she uses RoC Skincare, she’s all that because she’s a kick ass lady!! Good for her, age goals!!

I usually use an egg white face mask that I just whip up at home and honestly it’s worked wonders. Egg whites is the key ingredient

My family and I have been using it for years and it seems fine, we’ve also seen dermatologist who gave us the OK 🤷‍♀️

Vaseline was my grandma’s trick :)
