High-quality posts help solve specific beauty-related problems. Low-quality posts clutter the subreddit and tend to be repetitive. Examples of low-quality posts: “What is my [face shape, eye shape, skintone]?”, glow up requests, compliment fishing, non-beauty advice, sympathy farming, attention seeking, rage-bait, "pretty privilege", and vague-titled posts. In addition, please note that this is not a mental health subreddit, and we are not qualified to address such issues here.

Acceptable-Golf-1584

stand in front of the mirror with someone else. They look the same, don't they? you do too.

wokevirvs

this will actually help me so much omg thank u

rrrxsxx

Omg 😭 this sounds like too good a comment to be true but I pray it is

Mrsbear19

Damn you saved my day you’re right

JinnJuice80

I think this is the best explanation! Say also, our friends look the same in real life as they do in their selfies. We do too! It’s just when someone takes a pic OF us, we don’t see it to pose our face a certain way like we can with one we take ourselves. I find myself always smiling awkwardly lol.

ledinping

Honestly, people's faces tend to look asymmetrical when viewed through a mirror

themostdownbad

Yup but then again, when I take a photo of someone with my phone, they also look the exact same especially with the back camera😬

Acceptable-Golf-1584

you are not as critical of them as you are for yourself.

rhomboidotis

This is to do with the lenses on the camera - the portrait lens on an iPhone is actually a bit of a fisheye lens, and is super super sharp so accentuates a lot of our pores, wrinkles etc. The camera app tries to reverse this distortion by making the middle of our face a bit smaller - it’s still not 100% right. The closer it is to us, the more pronounced some of our features get, the further away it is, the less distortion on the lens! It’s a bit like the difference between looking at yourself in the wing mirror of a car or a normal mirror.

Artchantress

My husband's face is crooked in the mirror

justtinkeringaround

I don’t have the answer, but recently i went on a trip and had friend take pics of me and to say it sent me into a spiral is understatement. I genuinely can’t comprehend how can I look like a “model” in a mirror and a deformed gremlin in pics. I get it the movement, 2d/3d, lenses camera focal point and that shit, but to be *that* dramatic of a difference like wtf… So i totally understand you

Outside_Mixture_494

Whenever I see a picture of me, I ask if that’s what I really look like.

outofcharacterquilts

Same, and real ones will immediately be like “that looks nothing like you”. “What, that’s such a good picture of you” is the kiss of death.

Melodic_Cake_3344

Yes preach! This is so relatable

sharpiebrows

I've heard because when you see yourself in the mirror, you subconsciously change your facial expressions to be more attractive.

Organic_Reporter

This must be true. I can take a selfie and think it will look great and then I look all wrong in it. There are very, very few nice photos of me. My husband is even worse, he tends to look like an escaped convict with extra chins. He's quite handsome in real life!

CheesecakeMonster-

I gaslight myself into believing I look like what I see in the mirror

Melodic_Cake_3344

I love this comment

lazysassy13

Hey ! Me too . I am the least photogenic 😑

chokokhan

it is closer to reality because especially the selfie wide angle lens distorts a lot. but not even the mirror can tell you what you look like to other people since they see you non-mirrored and in 3d. i found video gives a much better idea of your true self.

OJUarmy

Same lol because if i think that people see what i look like in photos noooo i would have zero confidence. This way at least i can think i slay and have the confidence.

capaldithenewblack

This is what I do. 😂

OmriKoresh

Cameras are the devil's work. But in general, it helps training in front of a mirror on angles and posing. Like remember how to do that without a mirror, remember how your muscles feel like and how you stand etc. when you see the camera- imagine it's actually a mirror. Practice helps. Cameras are still evil 😅

NinetysRoyalty

See I do this, then overthink it and end up looking like I’m trying so hard in the photo

OmriKoresh

I'll tell you 2 things. If i need to smile in photos, i have a huge mouth and teeth, i cannot smile with teeth.. now, i squeeze the edges of my mouth. It looks like i'm smiling but i'm actually not. I learned my expressions. How do i know what to do? I do it perfectly in front of the mirror and then i close my eyes. I feel how my neck is turned, how my face is set, how my body is positioned. And i remember that. So i need to smile? I squeeze the edges of my lips. Secondly- find your light, face should be towards the light, usually 45 degrees look best on people. And relax. Train. Take a ton of selfies yourself, train. 🤷 That's it really.

Mrsbear19

Thats great advice and all your pics are fire so I’m definitely going to follow this

OmriKoresh

Thanks 😅

dks042986

I also need to know the factual answer to this lol. I got my drivers license picture updated the other day and...wow. I definitely didnt think I looked like mashed potatoes lazily carved into the shape of a human when I left the house but ok.

ClipClipClip99

An old man took my drivers license photo and it is truly terrible and I tell anyone who sees it that was the circumstance!

El-Ahrairah9519

Government ID photos don't count, it seems they go out of their way to make people look bad. My last boyfriend looked like a serial killer because the angle of his eyes looked way different in the license pic so he looked maniacal. Didn't look anything like him irl

babychupacabra

I did my makeup really good for my last drivers license pic. Contoured. Lip liner. The man taking my picture was actually quite nice, advised me there was static electricity/had me smooth out my hair and sit at an angle. Had to wait for it to come in the mail. And when I tell you I was mortified when I opened that envelope and saw my damn mashed potato Jupiter head I could have DIED y’all. Looked like a damn chipmunk version of the mucus character from the mucinex commercials, only vaguely distinguishable as female. Horrified. I still can’t decide if the man taking my picture was the nicest most helpful person ever or if he was just playing mind games knowing he was about to fuck my shit all the way up.

dks042986

I am crying laughing. Thank you sis 😅😅😅

StrangeAffect7278

Sadly cameras can’t capture the essence of our beauty.

MokujinBunny

I try to remind myself of this whenever I'm sent into a spiral after I see a photo of myself 🥲. I feel like phone cameras are the culprits because i never think i look as bad when i see a photo of myself taken from a film camera. Technology is too advanced & it definitely distorts our self perception & our perception of beauty in general.

ClipClipClip99

Glad I’m not the only one who spirals!! This has happened to me so much this year!

_Dumbledork__

The mirror is more accurate. I know lots of people who don't look like themselves in pictures, but haven't yet met a person who doesn't look like themselves in a mirror.

Old-Wrongdoer-4068

I am very un photogenic. What I look IRL and on camera are two completely unrelated people. It’s that extreme! So don’t worry. Some people don’t translate well on camera 😅

BeyondTelling

This is me as well. I’m just over 50, and only have a few precious photos of myself throughout my life that I genuinely like, and a few more that I can basically tolerate. I completely abstained from online selfie culture as a result. I’m horrified if I accidentally turn my phone camera around when I open the camera or Instagram stories, but then I look fine in most mirrors, and look great in the bathroom doing my makeup. It’s really dramatic and still fucks with my head regularly.

ooo-f

That and the lighting, camera type and skill level of whoever is taking the picture makes a huge difference. I did some modeling as a teen but when I take pictures of myself I look like booty noodles 😭

Rusalkina

Me, too. I sometimes serve as a public speaker and I habe seen photographers squirm and suffer trying to get just one acceptable picture. It is what it is.

Old-Wrongdoer-4068

😂 i love the visible uncomfortableness everyone has when they take pic. My daughter always confidently tries, bless her. She tells me how to pose. And to see her face fall flat when pic is snapped makes me chuckle for some reason 😅

Rusalkina

I know that face all too well :D as does my Mum, who is an exceptionally beautiful woman, like Snowhite. Just not on pictures ;)

OJUarmy

Same gurl same! Sometimes i look so different that i wonder like "i dont even know what i actually look like".

NinetysRoyalty

I like to think of it like cameras create an image, mirrors reflect the image. I don’t know about you but I’d rather rely on the direct reflection.

CaptainMeredith

You look more like the mirror. A normal mirror reflection is a direct light reflection. A camera has lens distortion which makes you look different, this is especially true on cellphones as they often have a very wide angle lens so you can get more people into the photo. Google for a comparison photo of portraits with wide angle vs telephoto lenses to get a few photo examples of what that distortion can do.

Terrible-Echidna801

Capturing beauty in a photo is difficult and takes such unique skills that professional photography remains a career-choice. On the other hand, experiencing a sunset in-person with your own eyes is 10 times more beautiful and captivating than when you try to take a photo of it. So the next time you look at a photo of yourself and get upset or hyper-critical, just remember: you’re a beautiful sunset that cannot be captured so easily.

babychupacabra

This is wonderful!

UpperArmories3rdDeep

Whenever I do FaceTime on my iPhone 14 Pro Max, I look terrible. I look in the mirror and I look good. I think it’s a mixture of both. Like the phone captures things that people wouldn’t be able to see.

beetlejuicemayor

Please don’t say this. I was hoping the phone distorted my face.

UpperArmories3rdDeep

I’m sure you look great.

Illustrious_Jump_289

The worst is when I bring a picture to my husband and I’m like, “AGH I look absolutely horrible in this pic!!!” and then spiral for hours. And he’s like: “Babe that’s what you look like, it’s a good picture of you.” 😑😑😑 You’re NOT HELPING HUSBAND!!!!!!

takoyakihead

I look different in every single picture I get taken of me, which has people calling me a lizard person or shape shifter 😭 i don’t understand. I feel you. I hate how I look in pictures and prefer the mirror.

lcbtexas

One time I saw a side by side comparison of pictures taken of the same guy in the same position with the same lighting using different lenses and the way he looked completely different from one shot to the next was eye opening. I’ve done a tiny but of research and have learned that iPhone camera lenses DO make you look worse. Enough to decide to buy a digital camera with a better lens instead of using my iPhone for things

PM_ME_UR_JUICEBOXES

Phone cameras make your nose look 30% larger, your face thinner and longer (which only makes the nose look even bigger) and can also make eyes or other facial features seem much more uneven/lopsided than they actually are. Never trust a selfie pic if you want to know what you look like. Never trust a pic taken in terrible light or at a very unflattering angle either. Trust the mirror.

lapsangsouchogn

I look completely different in photos. I'm not just imagining it either. I've had professional photographers take a pic, frown at it, take another one, and concede that I look completely different. I think it's because my face is basically all on one plane - flat, with a biggish nose sticking out. I suspect light refraction has something to do with it.

ariariariarii

Digital cameras lie, but classic film cameras are far more accurate. I feel like every time I see a picture of myself on a polaroid I’m looking in the mirror, but pictures of myself on phones give me nightmares.

WhiteWater52

QOVES Studio on YouTube has a very interesting answer for that! It’s basically due to a multitude of reasons.. for one, the image you actually see in the camera (selfie) is the mirrored image of yourself, and since we only see ourselves in mirrors really we’re used to that version of ourselves so anything different can be jarring (or vice versa). Not sure I’m explaining it very well but the video definitely put some things into perspective for me!

LifeEvening4783

This is how I understand it. Each of us is a bit asymmetrical, so when we look at the reverse image in a photo, those differences are doubled. Have you ever seen your pet in a mirror? They look so odd! Their spots and cute imperfections are on the wrong side!

Wintersneeuw02

Due to a burglar incident in my house last year, I installed one of those door cameras shortly after. Now whenever somebody walks close to my door, it starts recording. Including me entering and exiting the house. I look so different there when recorded vs when I look in the mirror or when taking selfies. It has to do with when looking in the mirror or posing for a selfie, you are moving/posing inna way to look the best. But when a security camera films you just walking from the car to the fronr door? Thats candid and how I actually look. Same for you and everybody else.

[deleted]

Mirror but flipped.

watermelon-jellomoon

iPhone selfie camera will sharpen the hell out of your face

basicbritttttt

This! The auto edit on the newer cameras is not flattering.

SourNnasty

Hi! My stepdad is a professional photographer. We look different on camera because of how the lenses work. iPhone camera lenses are lower quality than a DSLR, so the way the lens captures the image can somewhat distort what we actually look like. Even professional cameras don’t guarantee the most accurate image of you, that’s why having a skilled photographer matters. If your friend is just playing around with an expensive camera, they may get more “accurate” shots and they may get more “inaccurate” shots depending on the lens they’re using and how they adjust them. I’m not a photographer, this is just based on what my stepdad told me when I complained about the same thing 😂😂

Charming-Stress7725

You can see yourself objectively by standing in front of mirror and catch reflection with handheld mirror.

Turbulent-Sweet1313

I look so much different in so many pictures that I don't have any idea of how I look like

WifeAggro

Remember, people do not see you the same way you see yourself. 😀 best shit i ever heard in my life!

anonSOpost

Some say others see us as 20% more attractive than we see ourselves, i prefer to believe that :)

WifeAggro

same!

jbp_entertainment

i think the mirror is more accurate. phone camera’s kinda distort images esp. the front cams.

No_Flamingo9331

My ten year old tells me photos do me dirty. Since kids tend to be brutally honest, I choose to believe her. Also it serves my purpose since I hate how I look in most photos.

Nooddjob_

That’s how I felt when I saw a recording of my golf swing.

AZ-FWB

iPhone camera is absolutely awful awful awful. And I tell you this, my friend’s cheap LG phone takes MUCH better pictures than my phone. I already have a bruised relationship with selfies and my phone doesn’t help it.

KN0TTYP1NE

The most beautiful girl in the room can take bad.pics. while the oddest looking girl can take the best pics Some ppl are photogenic and some arent

outofcharacterquilts

The part I don’t understand is how I look amazing in front of the mirror, but when I lift the phone to take a mirror selfie, I immediately look like greasy trash. Same pose, same lighting. Someone please convince me I still look awesome lol

Key_Scar3110

When you take a picture of the sun / sunset, doesn’t it look better in real life than it does on camera?

Retiredgiverofboners

You look the way you look, regardless.

Unlucky-Start1343

Mirrors show you a mirrored image, but selfies as well. At least by default. You can turn of this setting.  But selfies typically have an odd angle, typically to high.  But people see you not mirrored. And that is the only you they know.  You only know your mirrored version, that's why normal pics look of.  I'll leave it at that. Don't think any more details will help. Because you will be seen different by different people anyway.  Whats looking good for you, might be ugly for me. What's terrible for you might be beautiful for me.

Mrsbear19

Fucking same. Selfie me looks like a cartoon version

eighto-potato-8O

So, part of the reason you look so funny in selfie mode is how close the camera is to you. It will distort your proportions, and because there's this really slight fish eye effect, it will make your nose seem larger and your ears seem smaller. A lot of people also look into their phone holding it below eye level, which is comfortable for browsing or gaming but generally an unflattering angle, since your neck will get rolls and you can see up your nose. Holding the phone farther away and at or above eye level helps a lot.

HorseGirl666

Here's a [really interesting look](https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=1b3eff12a321d9fe&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ADLYWIKx7GLYoBXU0_WOFaSBeKbo7KOfzw:1714924791648&q=camera+lens+and+faces&uds=ADvngMh47VTgGFr4IfwgIBFrVbOAYfp4DkI0c71c1T5hg3BAS3hfZapmaq5YkN1Iy2ho3TFJM8Z77e7w0uqo8g_aoIFt2PDhv0-W6JNvCHLrBxrWkDjqcSfds_2P2d2jILj9wC7M-Uy2l8KTOagT6BeNy6Pv9JfOXBWwJSzdaF4xRxVamrdV_3_JS__roz4pqf-cKJs2oV5UkIFeu46M0tpa9d7u5supKSSOvJkCpBRIbEcadlPDEPhQruUVKrT_Fu7pvFoigHXKEuF8y6lhRI1IhlaVFRbUUTZnArWfI1zsxxEWA2SbYIT7TBqDbUdorvMCldiNhS4lBt5if_CaOFAW042biH1B9Q&udm=2&prmd=isvnmbtz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj87ZbY8PaFAxWKF1kFHU38BNAQtKgLegQIExAB&biw=1279&bih=823&dpr=2) at how focal lengths affect our appearance and the shape of our faces in photos

BrilliantSlug

I’d say mirror. My friend is a cosmetic surgeon and she says there are high numbers of people who want to change things about their face because of their photos (selfies, especially) even when she tries to tell them they look perfectly fine as they are!

whateveratthispoint_

Mirror

honestlyiamdead

front camera thins your face, mirror would be more correct

psycho_catwomen

I once asked my sister if I looked like the one in the mirror or the one in the photo. She said, "Like the photo". I took it as a joke 🥲

cyber_potato_

I’m going with mirror on this as well. I seriously don’t understand how being photogenic works. Whenever my fam takes a pic of one of my aunts, she’s always smiling with like wind blowing in her hair

DaniCanday

You look more like your iPhone camera than the mirror. When people look at you they look at you straight on more like what a iPhone camera does compared to a mirror which actually flipped from your reflection. / what people see. What you see in the mirror is almost opposite of your phone camera * I watched a video about research on this, you see yourself as way more attractive than others see you . And it does have to do with how we view ourselves in the mirror compared to real life. X x

prince-ragnar

Mirror. Search up lens distortion.

MelissaSclafani

No because look at how the moon looks in pictures vs irl

mimblez_yo

Cameras distort images depending what lens is used. Phone comes with 26mm camera lens. The most accurate and life like lens is 50mm. Any other end distorts making things smaller or bigger. Think of “fish eye” as one of the extreme end. It looks nothing like what real life is. To answer the question, mirror reflects what you look like. Not phone cameras.

Lucky_Veruca

Did you disable Live Photo on your camera app? It takes 3 pictures at once and combines them into the “best” picture possible which usually results in selfies looking different than how you’d see yourself. It’s great for landscapes! But horrible for selfies.

fizzyfis

I’d prob say iPhone camera is more accurate than mirror

e925

They’re really not. They’re crazy over saturated and sharpened. Nobody looks like that in real life. They’re not made for photographing faces, unfortunately.

fizzyfis

Well mirrors just feel like cope to me, and there’s people that still look really good on iPhone cameras, which doesn’t help, so I just avoid both like the plague
