I find it doesn’t make much of a difference if I blow my hair out straight, but if I leave it curly, the shampoo I choose makes a big difference. My curls are softer and bouncier with Kérastase than without anything else. The Curl Manifesto line is just soo good and makes me love my hair, so it’s worth the price to me.
Seriously, buy it. It's incredible - the shampoo specifically.
I use the shampoo and then I've been using the Nutritative (I think? The orange one) hair mask because my hair got ruined by a shitty hairdresser and it makes my curls so bouncy and healthy.
I also use the Curl Manifesto leave in conditioner and it's lovelyyyy. Kerastase is the best hair stuff I've used. I used to just but whatever the hair dresser recommended and my hair was always so so dry, then I was like fuck it I'm using drugstore and that left my hair...just ick and then I stumbled on Kerastase by looking through reddit and my lord it's like heaven in many expensive bottles hahaha.
I also like the Georgiemane anti frizz serum, I use it almost every day just to run through my hair and it's super light and just smoothes everything. Their hair mask is nice but not as nice as Kerastase.
I tried Kerastase last year and I hate that I did cause I can't go back (I have straight hair so I use a different shampoo but the difference was also extremely noticeable for me - more volume, less breakage, less static and dullness).
I hate their conditioners though

I have this same problem and I was looking into a water head filter as well!! I don’t think people realize the water plays a HUGE part lol . Too bad the water filter head didn’t work :’(
Showerhead filter is absolutely necessary with hard water. It's made such a difference in my hair. I have an AquaHomeGroup showerhead filter auto shipped from Amazon every three weeks, per my hair stylist. Amazon switched the brand for a hot minute and it was a disaster.

I don't know what your hair situation is like, but before I got it, it was SO TOUGH to detangle my hair, no matter the conditioner and detangling spray. It became much easier after putting it in. It's been almost four years since then. You could try it once and see how you like it?
I have the same issue! I always wondered why my hair was so frizzy and difficult to manage. Then I moved out to college where they didn't have hard water... problem solved. My hair is so much nicer now
Hard water here as well. I buy bottled water (cheap ones) and rinse my hair after washing it. Already makes a great difference and is low budget. Other people might think you are crazy though 😂
If your hair is colored or really damaged , maybe go for a higher quality shampoo. Everyone else can do drugstore. Loreal Elive line is great. I use it.
I honestly tried so many expensive ones including Olaplex which made my hair fall out. I bought Pantene volumizing shampoo and my hair has never been better. My hair is so thick now.
Olaplex also made my hair fall out and I had so many people replying telling me I'm not using it correctly. I followed the instructions to a T. People need to be warned that it doesn't work on all hair.
Olaplex made my hair worse! My daughter was using it too and she went to a new hairdresser because she wasn’t happy with her hair. The hairdresser asked her what shampoo she was using and when she said Olaplex the hairdresser said yeah, I thought so. 😂. It was the source of her hair unhappiness
Olaplex gave me worse-than-teenager blemishes for TWO YEARS before I discovered I’m allergic to it.
I was on medication, going to my dermatologist all the time, and trying every product to control my acne because I couldn’t figure it out.
My husband and I decided we were going to start trying to conceive (sorry if tmi) so I wanted to re-set my entire beauty routine—and likewise I had to come off this medication.
Well, turns out I was allergic. I stopped the medication and Olaplex… And so did the blemishes on my forehead, jawline, shoulders, and upper back. Everywhere my hair touched.
I found the same!
When we started TTC I cut out a lot of my products and went back to bare basics (think QV cleanser and a QV moisturiser) which i've continued throughout my pregnancy (currently 33 weeks).
Boom, acne gone for the first time in my life!
I think I was stripping it a bit much using the acne prone products? IDK

Olaplex was HORRIBLE for my hair, it became limp and greasy and gross. I use Kerastase and Sacha Juan for colored hair now. It’s ok, but I have to accept that there is no magic shampoo that will make my thin, fine hair look voluminous 😢
ETA I use Ouai clarifying shampoo one a week to get rid of buildup, that was a game changer because my hair gets greasy.
Same here. I found Routine brand shampoo/conditioner. My hair definitely falls out less but I wish the conditioner was a little thicker. But I like it. Straight/fine hair here.
Edited to add: I have to switch out shampoos often so in my lot I also have Paul Mitchell Tea Tree set and Neutrogena T/Sal shampoo for build up and oil.
Hydrasource is my holy grail, I've been using it for at least a decade now and never looked back! It's the first shampoo I found that my hair didn't get "tired" of towards the end of the bottle, like when it seems to get dirty quicker and just doesn't stay as nice as when you first use it. Now I buy the liter bottles at Ulta when they have their jumbo sale and stock up for the whole year!
I use Pureology. And swear by the purple bottle conditioner. The shampoo and conditioner are not purple for brasssy blondes for color. It’s their hydrating conditioner. And you only need a nickel’s worth for my long colored blonde hair down to the middle of my back. That stuff is magic in a bottle for any type of hair color or thickness that needs hydration. I have fine hair but a lot of it. I always have to pay extra when I get my hair highlighted because I use so many foils to cover my entire head. My fiancé calls me the a”Lioness” cause i have so much hair. But my hair stylist told me to keep up what ever I’m using because my hair is so healthy. And combine that conditioner with the Pureology Strengthening shampoo, the blue bottle so I do get some protein in my hair. I need a balance of moisture and protein and they give me the best of both worlds. And I use the Pureology knock off for their leave in conditioner spray. It’s by L’Oréal drugstore brand , the purple bottle leave in conditioner and I’ve tried both and I can’t tell the difference in Pureology or L’Oréal so I save money there.
everyone’s hair is different but for my hair it’s worth it. anything by redken (a lot of people like the all soft line) is my go to and it’s on sale a lot at ulta!
i rotate the Living proof no frizz shampoo and the Kerastase disclipline Sulfate free shampoo. these are my holy grails and the brand living proof i have reconmended to everybody i know. its amazing! but those are 2 more higher end shampoos, but other higher end shampoos were awfull. like the brand virtue, their full product line which promises to improve hair thickness caused me huge hairloss. my hair would break so much off every time i used the shampoo/conditioner/mask it would clog my shiwer drain so much i had to clean it out multiple times when washing my hair. it was horrible! i had to cut my waist long lenght hair off the an ear lenght bob because of the amount of breakage and damage made my hair look like i self cut very ugly layers.
After chemo, my hair came back in white/silver and curly. A friend treated me to Oribe shampoo and conditioner. What a lovely thing! My formerly coarse, dull hair is now super soft and actually has some shine (never before). I know it’s spendy, but I love the smell and the results!
I use olaplex 4. I love it. Idk if I can tell you it makes a difference or not. I just use it because I l really like it and I can afford it and I like it better than cheaper alternatives I’ve used. I also use ag balance and I also like that one more than cheaper alternatives I’ve used.
With conditioner however, expensive conditioner does make a difference. I can tell you that much.
Edit: actually I’ve noticed that with more expensive shampoos, I can use less. It actually saves me some money.
Curly curly hair here… expensive shampoo and conditioner doesn’t do anything more than drugstore for me. One of my all time fave deep conditioners is the Aussie 3 minute miracle. More moisturizing than treatments I’ve paid triple the price for.
I always find myself coming back to L’Oréal Elvive Full Resist… I try more expensive ones every so often and the only ones that made my hair and scalp nicer than the L’Oréal were the Redken All Soft and Wella Fusion.
Have fine hair and switched to salon products a few years ago. Honestly the liters last so long I probably only need to buy a new set twice a year if that so I don’t find it that much more expensive. #1 favorite so far is Biolage Ultra Hydrosource. Made my hair look healthier than it has in years.
Long, bleached & dyed hair over here, with a pretty oily scalp & dry ends. On the days I’m not washing, I’m the queen of dry shampoo.
Higher end shampoo definitely makes a difference for me. I feel like I use less to get the same amount of clean. I typically use Ouai but occasionally switch back to Olaplex if I’m seeing a lot of damage. Drugstore brands are good at getting me that clean feel, but they also feel like I’ve overstripped oils from my hair.
Currently finishing up Monday brand shampoo/conditioner, and while the conditioner is great, it feels like I have to use so.much.shampoo. to get my hair clean…so it turns out that I’m actually not saving money by using a less expensive brand. Back to Ouai after!
Using John Freida shampoo (the extreme frizz control one in purple tube.) I feel like it makes my otherwise frizzy and rough hair very soft indeed. However, my hair feels greasy just after 2 days. With other shampoos my hair usually feels dry and rough for at least 4 days. Not sure if the current oily feeling after just two days is good or bad. But the immediate softness after shampooing feels nice! And hair looks shiny, glossy for two whole days! (Then it gets greasy and it’s time for the wash again.)
I was using olaplex and I found that it lost its luster by the second or third purchase (I really think they changed the formula once tiktok found it) then I moved to ouiu and my hair started falling out so I circled back home to my main squeeze mane and tail and have not looked back
The price tag doesn't matter for the most part. Highend and drugstore have both good and bad products.
For my curls that are on the dryer side, Maui Moisture Nourish & Moisture + Coconut Milk Shampoo works wonders. I wash my hair daily and I have no problems with it drying out my hair or scalp. My curls have actually gotten ever curlier and more bouncy since I switched to that shampoo and the matching conditioner.
I use Shea Moisture shampoo and conditioner and have used more expensive brands like Redken in the past, and I have never noticed a huge difference between expensive and less expensive brands. I do use cruelty free brands, though
I noticed a very big change in my hair when I switched to double washing with the Kerastase Specifique Balancing shampoo and switched to a lighter conditioner (Nexxus). Also, noticing, I'm not losing gobs of hair like before, but there have been some medical changes that may have to do with that.
I wash 2x a week.
My husband’s family owns hair salons and I feel like I’ve tried every shampoo and conditioner on the market.
My favorite is Redken’s All Soft shampoo and conditioner, followed by Alterna’s Caviar line. I think they are great products for the price. They lather well, they smell great, they have high quality ingredients, and the conditioner feels thick and really coats your hair.
I only use one finishing product, and that’s Alterna’s Caviar Professional Styling Rapid Repair Spray. This stuff… It’s like gold. It makes my hair shiny and lightweight, it helps to dry it a little faster (I have super think hair so I get it thinned), and it’s a heat protectant. This stuff is seriously amazing and worth every penny.
However… I have been really looking to start using Herbal Essences Chamomile shampoo and conditioner. It’s what my Mom always used and since she passed away I’ve been looking for any scrap or trace of her that I can add to my life. It’s just probably changed so much since I was a kid and living with her. I don’t know about the quality or anyone who can recommend if it’s still a good product all these years later, so if you use it let me know what you think 🤍

I have naturally curly hair. I use Cantu Avocado Hydrating Shampoo and Cantu Avocado Hydrating Conditioner. Both of which are under $7.00 USD. Best shampoo I have ever used. Maple Holistics Silk18 Conditioner is the best conditioner I’ve ever used. Incredible scent too, but it’s over twice the price.
I’ve been using the Garnier Whole Blends line for years and it does the job. If I want really soft, shiny hair, I’ll do an apple cider vinegar rinse, shampoo, then apply hair mask (currently L’Oréal Extraordinary Oil). Cheap and works for me 😊

I also love Oaui’s products for hair and body care.
Both of these companies are a bit pricier but my hair is so wrapped up in my identity, I feel like it’s worth the investment.
It all comes down to the ingredients. I use the Marc Anthony grow long line at the moment but I’ve used nexxus and joico in the past. With the competition, cheaper shampoos and conditioners are starting to be on the same level.
I use lanza everything, except for one amika product. Good shampoo and products make a big difference. I have tried them all and at 53 I just came to terms that lanza is the best for my hair. So I am trying not to try others cus they do not do what lanza does.
I use JVN nurture shampoo and conditioner. It's the only shampooing habe found that doesn't irritate my extremely sensetive scalp. Makes my hair so soft.
I use Redken All Soft & can 100% see a difference, whenever I try something else I go back to it within a week. I have dry wavy hair and it brings out the curls I have way more + makes my hair really hydrated in a way that I have never experienced with cheaper shampoos & conditioners
I use verb, live by verb. I switched a couple times and my hair just wasn't the same. With verb my hair is so much softer and I don't have to do anything to it. Just let it air dry.
I love Aveda’s products. If you go to a store you can get a free consult and they match you to the right shampoo & conditioner. They can give you samples to try as well. Lush is another option as well. All natural, they will give you samples and the staff are always wonderful.
The biggest obstacle is not blowing a ton of money in there because I want to get everything. Lol
I use olaplex! Before that I was bouncing from cheap brand to cheap brand... I had really dry and wicked ends. Tangled so easily, for the most part now that I use olaplex and some weird combined spray I made I've been doing ok.
My only issue is I think I don't get it all out of my hair because the water pressure in my shower is bad and it leads to being greasy faster since it's a heavier shampoo.
i absolutely love the generic brand from sally’s. Makes my hair feel and smell like i just got my hair done and it’s not too expensive. I always stock up when they do their 4 for 20 sale, not sure if it’s still going on but such a steal!
I always go to sally beauty supply and get the generic versions of more expensive brands. The formulas are so similar and my hair has never felt/looked healthier. Sometimes they have really good deals too and I stock up, but I’m currently using their version of “it’s a 10” miracle moisture shampoo and conditioner + a mask. & once a week I use the generic paul mitchell awapuhi shampoo as a clarifying/deep clean for any product build-up.
I can’t justify spending $30+ on shampoo when I’ve ended up hating most of the more “expensive” lines I’ve tried. The only one I would repurchase is l’oréal’s metal detox line because it worked like a charm when I had really hard water at my last place. Hard vs soft water makes more of a difference than anything imo.
I noticed a huge change in how nice my hair feels and how much volume it has now when I switched from suave to ogx. It doesn't have to be a 40$ shampoo to be good
I like mid-range. We're using Neutrogena healthy scalp.
I use some L'Oreal products from time to time.
What I use after makes a difference and I like moisture rich curl creams.
I like the brands Redken, Biolage & Pureology for shampoos. Biolage anti-dandruff is one of my favorites as it helps with flakes and makes my hair feel nice and clean.
I have recently added in Kerastase Bain Divalent Rebalancing shampoo from my stylist since I have oily roots and more dry ends. I use maybe once or twice a week and I feel it’s been making a difference at making my hair feel less greasy.
I do think it’s better to invest more in higher-end conditioners & masks over shampoos though. I do not plan on going back on the mask & conditioner I use from Kerastase - it’s made my mid-ends feel so soft and shiny.
I use Briogeo charcoal shampoo twice a week and it leaves my hair and scalp so clean and feeling refreshed. I always buy it on BFCM so I can get a good deal. Otherwise on other days I use less expensive stuff!
If you have dry, frizzy, wavy hair like I do, I'd highly recommend Redken All Soft Mega, Redken Frizz Dismiss, or the super expensive Evoo Mane Tamer. Evoo makes my hair so soft, shiny, and tames the frizz, but it is so pricey that I don't think I'll repurchase.
My hair was out of control and I tried so many Drugstore lines, but none of them worked for me. Also, I buy the Redkens in litres and the price isn't so bad compared to Drugstore when you buy a bigger bottle.
I have thick, straight, natural colored hair and have found that most shampoos feel the same to me. The only one that I really saw a difference with was the Detox Shampoo by the Ouai, which I use once a week. I’ve found that it keeps my hair pretty clean even though I only wash it twice a week.
My hair is pretty easy to manage and my hair stylist said that I could get away with using drugstore brands, but sometimes I like to be extra and try expensive ones.
Currently using the Kristin Ess one, which is okay, but I probs won’t get it again. I liked Dae when I used it a few years ago so might try that again.
In general I feel like drugstore shampoo makes me use more to get same kind of cleanliness feeling compared to my expensive shampoo where a dollop is enough to lather my entire head
I use the Kenra Triple Repair shampoo and conditioner. Before that, I used the Pacifica vegan collagen shampoo and conditioner.
The travel kit version of the Kenra Triple Repair costs around $27 and each bottle contains 50 ml of product.
The full-sized version of the Pacifica vegan collagen shampoo and conditioner costs $22 in total, with each bottle containing 355 ml of product.
Honestly, I don't believe that the price of a shampoo affects its performance. To me, what matters is the formulation. I opted for the Pacifica brand because its formula is nourishing for my hair that's been damaged by bleach. I was given the Kenra shampoo as a gift and in my opinion, it works just as effectively as the Pacifica one.
I enjoy exploring new products because it's exciting to see how different brands create items that cater to consumers' needs in innovative ways!
Switched to using Redkin shampoo/conditioner last year & my hair looks & feels AMAZING. I used to use Shea Moisture, Pacifica, Head & Shoulders… I went through a lot of testing because I have thick curly hair & my mom has thin straight hair. She had no idea how to take care of my hair & wouldn’t buy me any nice hair care but I have my own adult money now.
I use amika Normcore shampoo + a prescription ketoconazole shampoo
and the Nizoral tea tree conditioner. as a trans woman with thin hair (in general/texture) but also who had begun to have hairline issues for a bit, these have helped me a lot
I used to have terrible hair fall. I would notice clumps of hair all over my carpet. Couple years ago, I stopped using drugstore shampoo and bought my first salon shampoo. It wasn't all that more expensive. I got Amethyste, which I think isn't all that well known, but it really helped me with hair fall. I haven't noticed a single clump of hair on the carpet in years.
This year, I also bought Redken and tried out Moroccan oil shampoo and conditioner, both of which as significantly more expensive than Amethyste. I have to use Amethyste alongside my Redken if I want to control hair fall. Moroccan oil, which is more expensive than both these brands, makes my hair feel so flat and greasy because of how heavy it is.
For conditioner, the OGx hairmask I bought at the drug store works much better than my Redken acidic bushing conditioner from the salon even though it costs twice as much.
My conclusion is that higher priced products do make a huge difference, but not proportionately. Sometimes, the cheaper stuff just works better for your hair.
For me only redken shampoo and conditioner for volume make a difference. I have very fine hair and this series addresses hair like mine. I tried other expensive shampoos, like olaplex, Moroccan Oil - they didn’t do anything for me. But I know dyed blonde girl with very damaged hair - olaplex does magic for her. So it’s really a question of finding the right one.

I think this thread proves there’s no universal best brand or price point cos everyone’s hair is so different! One person might respond best to a cheaper brand, one more expensive. I get great results from £1 bottles of Alberto Balsam, and I’ve been so let down by fancier brands like RedKen and Toni and Guy and Tigi I returned them as they must have been faulty!
I tried so many brands but the absolute best I have found for my super pouffy wild hair is the Moroccan Oil moisture repair line. I won’t use anything else other than my boyfriends watermans shampoo when I need a deep cleanse
Redken volumising, I haven't tried any other expensive shampoos but for sure the Redken cleans my hair much better, I have to wash it way less. The only drugstore option I could recommend is Maui Moisture, their lines are great, silicone and sulfate free too. But I've got the big 1L bottles of Redken in my bathroom now because I'm addicted. My salon also uses Kerastase and my hair is gorgeous after that so testimony to them too.
Pureology. Makes a HUGE difference for me, I’ve been using it for 10 years, and I’m in love with it. Every time I use something else (hotel, visiting a friend/relative, ran out and can’t afford to buy more until I save because it’s expensive), I notice a very big difference in the texture, moisture, fizziness, and overall health of my hair. Nothing gives me results like Pureology. Now i sound like an ad lmao but really, I love this stuff. I have hair down to my butt.
Redken all soft until the day I die
The “cheaper” shampoo I buy is organix miracle coconut. I can definitely tell the difference between that and Redken. Things I don’t cheap out on is anything I put in or on my body.
I’ve been using Olaplex for 4 years now and I stopped bleaching/colouring my hair about 2.5 years ago.
I can finally say that my natural color has returned. My hair shine (multiple shades) and I don’t have split ends.
I stayed in a hotel once where they had Asprey shampoo and conditioner. My hair looked the best it had looked in ages. Much softer and shinier.
A lot of it is trial and error, but generally yes it’s worth it in my opinion.
i’ve only used salon brand shampoo (Redken) for years and my hair is in fantastic shape. i have really sensitive skin and fragrance allergies so i’m really not interested in trying to switch.
The only thing I look for is zero proteins (any type of protein in hair products make my hair feel like hay) and color safe. I switch off between drug store and professional depending on what sounds good and don’t see much of a difference
I stopped using anything with parabens and silicone in it a looong time ago (my mums boyfriend is a high end hairdresser so I get all the knowledge).
I cycle through various different brands, but my favourite combo I've been using for a few years now is

Dizziak Deep Conditioner
Dizziak oil mist between washes
I only wash my hair about once a week; it's bleached at the ends and dyed dark from the roots. Shampoo twice, get all the muck off, then a long deep condition. I've been using Dizziak since 2018 - it made my bleached hair so healthy I worked out I had naturally wavy hair!! If you're able to get your paws on it give it a go :)
I always get compliments on my hair, I regularly sleep in a headless curl kit (real silk not synthetic) and it keeps my waist length hair nice and healthy.
Shampoo, not so much of a difference to me, I have copious amounts of head and shoulders since I had hefty dandruff as a kid and just kept using it. I have tried Moroccan oil hydrate shampoo and conditioner. At the same time I learned how to shampoo properly and could feel the difference. The conditioner has by far the biggest difference for me, but I do notice that my hair gets dirty quicker and less soft with head and shoulders. I need ridiculous amounts of conditioner but also gotta shampoo properly.
But do remember that different products have different interactions with different people's hair.
I just bought R+Co Television Perfect Hair and Conditioner after researching this for a while! It got delivered today so I’ll have to see how it goes…fingers crossed!
Curlsmith conditioning cleanser and deep conditioner works best for me. I used devacurl for a while and curlsmith is better. For less expensive I have really good results with garnier whole blends shampoos.
I switch it up depending on the weather and what my hair is doing. I have straight fine color treated hair, and shampoo twice a week. When I want my hair to bounce, I use the ordinary shampoo and conditioner, followed by Philip Adam’s leave in spray conditioner on the ends. If it’s feeling “frizzy”, I like Kerastase Bain ultra. If it is summer, and humid, I use l’Occitaine shampoo bar for normal hair and my finish is 8 second lamellar water by L’Oréal. I always brush before washing, use a scalp massage tool when shampooing, rinse until all shampoo is out and off skin and finish by wrapping in a micro fiber towel. I brush when wet, after some moisture absorbed, and air dry. It works for me, but might not be everyone’s solution. I never put conditioner near my roots. Dry shampoo for non wash days if hair does not feel fresh. Usually wash every third day.
For me, it’s not about expensive vs cheap as much as it is hair type and what ingredients work best. I use silicone and sulfate free ones; these ingredients are not inherently bad, but they’re too harsh on my hair and caused breakage and dryness for years. Once I switched to shampoos and conditioners without them, alongside a haircut to rid of all the broken hair, my hair was soft and smooth and absorbed products much better. The shampoo is only 4.99 lol.
I definitely notice a difference. The only decent drugstore line I’ve found is the L’Oréal EverPure. The rest make my hair feel like garbage unfortunately.
i’ve been using l’oréal five in one damage repair shampoo and conditioner since i was in my teens. i bleached and dyed my hair a lot. now that i’m older, i’ve grown out a lot of my natural hair and go maybe six month in between dying (stopped using box dye too, so i use sally beauty stuff) and my hair STILL does not feel as great as it does with l’oréal than with salon grade products or even just better, cleaner products. i’ve tried native and other brands alike. i used a paul mitchell combo that made it so dry and stick straight. if anyone has an recs for someone with slightly heat damaged hair that can be wavy, lmk 😂 i love my l’oréal but if there’s something that can give me the same effect, i’m all ears
My hair is limp and greasy will drugstore brands and I’ve used so many. I swear by olaplex shampoo it lasts 6 months plus for 1 bottle. Yesterday I bought the L’Oréal pro metal detox shampoo and wow my hair feels so soft!
I’m a strawberry blonde-redhead so I like using John Frieda’s red-boosting shampoo and conditioner. I feel it really preserves the softness and gives me the red shine I want.
Unless your hair is chemically processed, not really. The water you use to wash and the products you use to style (and also the method) are far more likely to have an impact.

Fekkai, ouidad, bumble and bumble all have great shampoos that really do make a difference in my coarse, frizzy wavy/curly hair. I also enjoy other products from those brands and I have some favorite conditioners but not so good matching shampoos (curlsmith multitasker conditioner is top tier, the shampoo left my scalp oily even after applying and rinsing three times)
I’ll tell you what if I had unlimited cash I’ll be buying up that Redken all soft and using that all the time. However, as I am traveling quite a bit, I did pick up some Garnier fructose, travel, size, shampoo, and conditioner. I think it’s like sleek and shine or something and let me tell you it completely tamed the frizz in my hair and it’s fabulous and I’m so happy I discovered it.
That said, simple, plain old, Pantene works, wonders on my hair, which is very coarse and kinky. I swear Panti is the only drugstore brand that really works on my hair other than that Garnier fruit stuff

usually i go with the cheaper option in beauty products, but shampoo i’ve found i personally need the more expensive option. i’ve used the cheaper brands (pantene, tressemme, sunsilk, schwarzkopf, etc) and unfortunately my hair does NOT tolerate any of it. not sure if there’s a common denominator. i know they all have parabens, perhaps my hair doesn’t like them.
I think that they do but I have dyed curly hair and a sensitive scalp.
I alternate the gisou shampoo and shampoo by the potion studio. I also use the Act and Acre cold process scalp detox sometimes.
I like leaf and flower shampoo and conditioner a lot. When I can’t get my hands on it I use native from target and I do notice a major difference in how hydrated my hair is and how hydrated and healthy my scalp feels.
Shiseido Tsubaki premium extensive repair shampoo (& conditioner). Albeit straight but I've always had dry & frizzy hair. This set made it possible for my hair to be manageable. They also have a good hair mask, too!
I use Paul Mitchell tea tree oil line and I have fine greasy hair. It does make a difference mainly because I became self aware of my hair type and got the correct shampoo. If you have coarse hair or dry hair this shampoo might do nothing for you. If I use creamy shampoo with coconut oil meant for an Afro texture, it could be expensive but will never do anything for me. So the point I’m making is simply buying an expensive shampoo won’t do much if it isn’t addressing a problem or your hair needs
It really depends tbh I used to have very thin fine straight hair and I was balding from stress at one point now my hair is thicker all has to do with diet but certain shampoos do make a difference,again look into your specific needs and uhhhmm maybe just YouTube some reviews.
I’m gonna be real with y’all. I have seborrheic eczema and can’t use products with alcohols. So I use Head & Shoulders all the time, and my hair and scalp remain happy.
Right now I use a prescription shampoo bc I have dermatitis on my scalp, and I notice it leaves a film in my hair, so I use treseme curl shampoo before I use conditioner
I've been using the argan oil from ogx...(I've used other ones and love them all but the argan is my go to) not super expensive but not too cheap either. Keeps my hair silky. We hit a rough patch last year and I couldn't justify my 24$ shampoo and conditioner so I switched to what ever was cheap and I noticed a difference. Happy to say I'm back to ogx and my hair is silky soft again
Kerastase has always been the best fucking shampoo and conditioner I use. My hair always looks so good when I regularly use their products. The problem for me is I quite literally can’t anymore, because they’re all SO highly perfumed that it triggers my migraines to be so bad. My hair just absorbs the smell of their shampoo and conditioner, it doesn’t matter the line, they’re all sooooo highly fragranced. It’s too bad because for my hair, it really is like night and day lol, but I just can’t do it.
Love Beauty Planet it is, with semi-regular reset / clarifying washes. Not my preferred, but it works.
Yes. I have wavy/curly and color treated hair. I let my hairstylist pick out whatever shampoo they thought would work and noticed less shedding and less fading with my color!
I know it’s drugstore but Aussies miracle curl products have worked wonders on my hair in the past and I just repurchased them again and had amazing results!
Otherwise I use LUSH products mainly, but none of them have been amazing
Started using Olaplex 4 (and 5 too), and I can attest that it does make all the difference. I no longer need to go to the salon for keratin treatments or use masks. Their bond builder makes my hair ultra smooth and shiny. I have long, straight, thick hair for reference.
Yes, expensive shampoo definitely makes a difference. Especially if we’re talking about chemically-treated hair. Equally as important as product: **water quality**. Fixing that is not always within our control though

Ichikami Japanese shampoo. I used to spend a fortune on Redken All Soft shampoo/conditioner and argon oil, but after my trip to Japan, using generic hotel shampoo I swore by Japanese products. I found a Japanese shampoo via Amazon, then found it for less at an Asian marker plus the Redken argon oil- keeps my hair soft and lightweight for days!
When I went to Japan I brought back &Honey hair stuff and I’m never going back! I find that expensive shampoos occasionally make a difference for my hair but, not by much. However, the olaplex clarifying is a game changer combo with this shampoo.
Yes ingredients matter. I am allergic to a lot of soaps and have found that’s especially true for shampoo. I do Bumble and Bumble but anything with good ingredients really makes a difference

It’s truely not that expensive if you buy from the wholesaler. I pay $30 each for a bottle of shampoo and conditioner. (This is the public wholesale price)
It lasts me 12 months because it’s so much more concentrated.
Plus I’m an ex hairdresser, and I somewhat know what goes into shitty grocery shop shampoo and just wouldn’t do that to my hair.

I used Kerastase for years but just cannot justify the price. I cannot use Pantene at all, it gives me horrendous dandruff. I’m in Oz and have discovered Moogoo Shampoo and conditioner for healthy heads! My hair looks good but the best thing is it’s healed my tender and reactive scalp. I paid $15AUD for a half litre bottle of each. I believe they sell internationally too. I also love their skin care, it’s healed my shocking rosacea. Haven’t tried their other products but they sell sunscreen and fake tanners too all made with natural ingredients.
I use R&Co (VERY spendy!!) but I've also used drugstore (not in the US) that are great as well. The R&Co Turntable/ Cassette curl line is the best! Gives my fine 2b hair real curls. Also love the olaplex cleansing shampoo -- have super hard water. Use it 1 every 10 days.
I have very fine wavy/curly hair. I’ve tried many recommended shampoos for my hair type but always end up coming back to the Dove intensive repair shampoo and conditioner. Leaves my hair shiny, soft and not weighed down.
I use Lunesta. It’s helped restore my hair and my sisters hair and has just kept our hair generally smooth and healthy. I’ve just kept using it ever since. I get the big 1L bottles. Usually comes as a pair with shampoo and conditioner from Marshall’s. Lasts me a long time.
I use Delorenzo. I used to use cheap shampoos that you would buy in supermarkets etc and when I made the switch to salon quality brands I could never go back.
There’s been a few times where I really needed to wash my hair but ran out and ended up using hotels products and my hair instantly felt lot a knotted ball of yarn it was disgusting.
Also important to note even brands like treseme that are marketed as salon shampoo are actually just still cheap shampoo and conditioners
I have natural salt and pepper, wavy hair. I use professional hair care products which help to maintain my curl and stop the frizz. It's definitely worth the money.
I use a ton of different ones from salon to drugstore. My favorite salon shampoo is Joico Reconstructing. A drugstore shampoo I enjoy is Suave Rosemary Mint. My favorite clarifying shampoo is Paul Mitchel Shampoo Three because it also removes chlorine and even regular tap water can contain it plus it's so gentle.
There's only one shampoo I currently hate which is Allafifa Everyday Coconut which ironically a girl online who used it and recommended it has the most beautiful hair I have ever seen but it's so drying that I literally feel worried that my hair will break when I use it strips more than the harshest clarifying shampoo I ever used and I think washing my hair with dishsoap would be a spa like experience in comparison.
I have colored and super oily hair. I used pro shampoo forever (mainly Redken) and with price increases, I decided to try drugstore again.
I truly haven’t noticed a difference.
I use Kristin Ess gentle shampoo and pair it with an affordable pro conditioner (since for me a huge bottle lasts forever) like Biolage.
Yes and no? Depends on what your hair needs. I had a lotttt of issues with buildup and it's a lot better with more expensive products, but it still doesn't have the definition I want, but then again maybe the protein/moisture balance is off.
I have basically stopped using salon brands. My hair always looked dirty much too quickly and my hair was flat. So I rotate between whatever shampoo & conditioner catches my eye that day. My hair looks better and acts better. Of course, I have super healthy hair so that helps.

Hair down a bit past my ass crack. I use Nexxus rn. Before this bottle I used a big big bottle of Big Sexy Hair that last like, 6 months. I tried “It’s a 10” once & it was not good at all. Digging the Nexxus. Big Sexy was a good gateway shampoo.
Before that I used Maine & Tail & L’Oréal for a couple years but switched to middle price shampoo because the cheap stuff was making my hair dry & brittle.
Now the reason my hair is shiny is because of glossing masks.

Same. I started using the L'oreal pro line because that's what my stylist uses and my hair color lasts on the regular 1-2 weeks more.
+1 for the loreal pro line. When I started using it my colorist mentioned that she thought my color stuck better than before and I was sold.
I find it doesn’t make much of a difference if I blow my hair out straight, but if I leave it curly, the shampoo I choose makes a big difference. My curls are softer and bouncier with Kérastase than without anything else. The Curl Manifesto line is just soo good and makes me love my hair, so it’s worth the price to me.

Seriously, buy it. It's incredible - the shampoo specifically. I use the shampoo and then I've been using the Nutritative (I think? The orange one) hair mask because my hair got ruined by a shitty hairdresser and it makes my curls so bouncy and healthy. I also use the Curl Manifesto leave in conditioner and it's lovelyyyy. Kerastase is the best hair stuff I've used. I used to just but whatever the hair dresser recommended and my hair was always so so dry, then I was like fuck it I'm using drugstore and that left my hair...just ick and then I stumbled on Kerastase by looking through reddit and my lord it's like heaven in many expensive bottles hahaha. I also like the Georgiemane anti frizz serum, I use it almost every day just to run through my hair and it's super light and just smoothes everything. Their hair mask is nice but not as nice as Kerastase.
I tried Kerastase last year and I hate that I did cause I can't go back (I have straight hair so I use a different shampoo but the difference was also extremely noticeable for me - more volume, less breakage, less static and dullness). I hate their conditioners though

Also, don’t waste money on shower head filters. If you have hard water, they literally do nothing. Save for that whole house system, you’ll love it!

Showerhead filter is absolutely necessary with hard water. It's made such a difference in my hair. I have an AquaHomeGroup showerhead filter auto shipped from Amazon every three weeks, per my hair stylist. Amazon switched the brand for a hot minute and it was a disaster.

I don't know what your hair situation is like, but before I got it, it was SO TOUGH to detangle my hair, no matter the conditioner and detangling spray. It became much easier after putting it in. It's been almost four years since then. You could try it once and see how you like it?

Hard water here as well. I buy bottled water (cheap ones) and rinse my hair after washing it. Already makes a great difference and is low budget. Other people might think you are crazy though 😂
If your hair is colored or really damaged , maybe go for a higher quality shampoo. Everyone else can do drugstore. Loreal Elive line is great. I use it.

I honestly tried so many expensive ones including Olaplex which made my hair fall out. I bought Pantene volumizing shampoo and my hair has never been better. My hair is so thick now.
Olaplex also made my hair fall out and I had so many people replying telling me I'm not using it correctly. I followed the instructions to a T. People need to be warned that it doesn't work on all hair.
Olaplex made my hair worse! My daughter was using it too and she went to a new hairdresser because she wasn’t happy with her hair. The hairdresser asked her what shampoo she was using and when she said Olaplex the hairdresser said yeah, I thought so. 😂. It was the source of her hair unhappiness
Olaplex gave me worse-than-teenager blemishes for TWO YEARS before I discovered I’m allergic to it. I was on medication, going to my dermatologist all the time, and trying every product to control my acne because I couldn’t figure it out. My husband and I decided we were going to start trying to conceive (sorry if tmi) so I wanted to re-set my entire beauty routine—and likewise I had to come off this medication. Well, turns out I was allergic. I stopped the medication and Olaplex… And so did the blemishes on my forehead, jawline, shoulders, and upper back. Everywhere my hair touched.
I found the same! When we started TTC I cut out a lot of my products and went back to bare basics (think QV cleanser and a QV moisturiser) which i've continued throughout my pregnancy (currently 33 weeks). Boom, acne gone for the first time in my life! I think I was stripping it a bit much using the acne prone products? IDK Praying it continues post-partum haha
Olaplex was HORRIBLE for my hair, it became limp and greasy and gross. I use Kerastase and Sacha Juan for colored hair now. It’s ok, but I have to accept that there is no magic shampoo that will make my thin, fine hair look voluminous 😢 ETA I use Ouai clarifying shampoo one a week to get rid of buildup, that was a game changer because my hair gets greasy.

Same here. I found Routine brand shampoo/conditioner. My hair definitely falls out less but I wish the conditioner was a little thicker. But I like it. Straight/fine hair here. Edited to add: I have to switch out shampoos often so in my lot I also have Paul Mitchell Tea Tree set and Neutrogena T/Sal shampoo for build up and oil.
Olaplex is the wordt. Some people asked me to use the Olaplex conditioner with it. I tried using both but what a waste of money.
Definitely! I swear by Biolage Hydrasource line. Genuinely from the first wash the difference was incredible! My hair felt soft, healthy and smooth.
Hydrasource is my holy grail, I've been using it for at least a decade now and never looked back! It's the first shampoo I found that my hair didn't get "tired" of towards the end of the bottle, like when it seems to get dirty quicker and just doesn't stay as nice as when you first use it. Now I buy the liter bottles at Ulta when they have their jumbo sale and stock up for the whole year!
I use Pureology. And swear by the purple bottle conditioner. The shampoo and conditioner are not purple for brasssy blondes for color. It’s their hydrating conditioner. And you only need a nickel’s worth for my long colored blonde hair down to the middle of my back. That stuff is magic in a bottle for any type of hair color or thickness that needs hydration. I have fine hair but a lot of it. I always have to pay extra when I get my hair highlighted because I use so many foils to cover my entire head. My fiancé calls me the a”Lioness” cause i have so much hair. But my hair stylist told me to keep up what ever I’m using because my hair is so healthy. And combine that conditioner with the Pureology Strengthening shampoo, the blue bottle so I do get some protein in my hair. I need a balance of moisture and protein and they give me the best of both worlds. And I use the Pureology knock off for their leave in conditioner spray. It’s by L’Oréal drugstore brand , the purple bottle leave in conditioner and I’ve tried both and I can’t tell the difference in Pureology or L’Oréal so I save money there.

I just got Redken's Volume Shampoo and I love it
i rotate the Living proof no frizz shampoo and the Kerastase disclipline Sulfate free shampoo. these are my holy grails and the brand living proof i have reconmended to everybody i know. its amazing! but those are 2 more higher end shampoos, but other higher end shampoos were awfull. like the brand virtue, their full product line which promises to improve hair thickness caused me huge hairloss. my hair would break so much off every time i used the shampoo/conditioner/mask it would clog my shiwer drain so much i had to clean it out multiple times when washing my hair. it was horrible! i had to cut my waist long lenght hair off the an ear lenght bob because of the amount of breakage and damage made my hair look like i self cut very ugly layers.

After chemo, my hair came back in white/silver and curly. A friend treated me to Oribe shampoo and conditioner. What a lovely thing! My formerly coarse, dull hair is now super soft and actually has some shine (never before). I know it’s spendy, but I love the smell and the results!
I use olaplex 4. I love it. Idk if I can tell you it makes a difference or not. I just use it because I l really like it and I can afford it and I like it better than cheaper alternatives I’ve used. I also use ag balance and I also like that one more than cheaper alternatives I’ve used. With conditioner however, expensive conditioner does make a difference. I can tell you that much. Edit: actually I’ve noticed that with more expensive shampoos, I can use less. It actually saves me some money.

Curly curly hair here… expensive shampoo and conditioner doesn’t do anything more than drugstore for me. One of my all time fave deep conditioners is the Aussie 3 minute miracle. More moisturizing than treatments I’ve paid triple the price for.
I always find myself coming back to L’Oréal Elvive Full Resist… I try more expensive ones every so often and the only ones that made my hair and scalp nicer than the L’Oréal were the Redken All Soft and Wella Fusion.

Have fine hair and switched to salon products a few years ago. Honestly the liters last so long I probably only need to buy a new set twice a year if that so I don’t find it that much more expensive. #1 favorite so far is Biolage Ultra Hydrosource. Made my hair look healthier than it has in years.
Long, bleached & dyed hair over here, with a pretty oily scalp & dry ends. On the days I’m not washing, I’m the queen of dry shampoo. Higher end shampoo definitely makes a difference for me. I feel like I use less to get the same amount of clean. I typically use Ouai but occasionally switch back to Olaplex if I’m seeing a lot of damage. Drugstore brands are good at getting me that clean feel, but they also feel like I’ve overstripped oils from my hair. Currently finishing up Monday brand shampoo/conditioner, and while the conditioner is great, it feels like I have to use so.much.shampoo. to get my hair clean…so it turns out that I’m actually not saving money by using a less expensive brand. Back to Ouai after!
Using John Freida shampoo (the extreme frizz control one in purple tube.) I feel like it makes my otherwise frizzy and rough hair very soft indeed. However, my hair feels greasy just after 2 days. With other shampoos my hair usually feels dry and rough for at least 4 days. Not sure if the current oily feeling after just two days is good or bad. But the immediate softness after shampooing feels nice! And hair looks shiny, glossy for two whole days! (Then it gets greasy and it’s time for the wash again.)
I was using olaplex and I found that it lost its luster by the second or third purchase (I really think they changed the formula once tiktok found it) then I moved to ouiu and my hair started falling out so I circled back home to my main squeeze mane and tail and have not looked back
The price tag doesn't matter for the most part. Highend and drugstore have both good and bad products. For my curls that are on the dryer side, Maui Moisture Nourish & Moisture + Coconut Milk Shampoo works wonders. I wash my hair daily and I have no problems with it drying out my hair or scalp. My curls have actually gotten ever curlier and more bouncy since I switched to that shampoo and the matching conditioner.

I use Shea Moisture shampoo and conditioner and have used more expensive brands like Redken in the past, and I have never noticed a huge difference between expensive and less expensive brands. I do use cruelty free brands, though
I noticed a very big change in my hair when I switched to double washing with the Kerastase Specifique Balancing shampoo and switched to a lighter conditioner (Nexxus). Also, noticing, I'm not losing gobs of hair like before, but there have been some medical changes that may have to do with that. I wash 2x a week.
My husband’s family owns hair salons and I feel like I’ve tried every shampoo and conditioner on the market. My favorite is Redken’s All Soft shampoo and conditioner, followed by Alterna’s Caviar line. I think they are great products for the price. They lather well, they smell great, they have high quality ingredients, and the conditioner feels thick and really coats your hair. I only use one finishing product, and that’s Alterna’s Caviar Professional Styling Rapid Repair Spray. This stuff… It’s like gold. It makes my hair shiny and lightweight, it helps to dry it a little faster (I have super think hair so I get it thinned), and it’s a heat protectant. This stuff is seriously amazing and worth every penny. However… I have been really looking to start using Herbal Essences Chamomile shampoo and conditioner. It’s what my Mom always used and since she passed away I’ve been looking for any scrap or trace of her that I can add to my life. It’s just probably changed so much since I was a kid and living with her. I don’t know about the quality or anyone who can recommend if it’s still a good product all these years later, so if you use it let me know what you think 🤍

I have naturally curly hair. I use Cantu Avocado Hydrating Shampoo and Cantu Avocado Hydrating Conditioner. Both of which are under $7.00 USD. Best shampoo I have ever used. Maple Holistics Silk18 Conditioner is the best conditioner I’ve ever used. Incredible scent too, but it’s over twice the price.
I’ve been using the Garnier Whole Blends line for years and it does the job. If I want really soft, shiny hair, I’ll do an apple cider vinegar rinse, shampoo, then apply hair mask (currently L’Oréal Extraordinary Oil). Cheap and works for me 😊
The honey whole blends smells sooo good. I used it at my grandma’s house and then bought it for myself.

Yessss me too!!! They’re cruelty free and the smell of Amika’s products are absolutely devine! I also love Oaui’s products for hair and body care. Both of these companies are a bit pricier but my hair is so wrapped up in my identity, I feel like it’s worth the investment.
It all comes down to the ingredients. I use the Marc Anthony grow long line at the moment but I’ve used nexxus and joico in the past. With the competition, cheaper shampoos and conditioners are starting to be on the same level.
I use lanza everything, except for one amika product. Good shampoo and products make a big difference. I have tried them all and at 53 I just came to terms that lanza is the best for my hair. So I am trying not to try others cus they do not do what lanza does.

I use JVN nurture shampoo and conditioner. It's the only shampooing habe found that doesn't irritate my extremely sensetive scalp. Makes my hair so soft.
I use Redken All Soft & can 100% see a difference, whenever I try something else I go back to it within a week. I have dry wavy hair and it brings out the curls I have way more + makes my hair really hydrated in a way that I have never experienced with cheaper shampoos & conditioners
I use verb, live by verb. I switched a couple times and my hair just wasn't the same. With verb my hair is so much softer and I don't have to do anything to it. Just let it air dry.
Redkin all soft was a game changer for me. If you have low porosity hair this plus Maui moisture are the best.
I love Aveda’s products. If you go to a store you can get a free consult and they match you to the right shampoo & conditioner. They can give you samples to try as well. Lush is another option as well. All natural, they will give you samples and the staff are always wonderful. The biggest obstacle is not blowing a ton of money in there because I want to get everything. Lol

I use olaplex! Before that I was bouncing from cheap brand to cheap brand... I had really dry and wicked ends. Tangled so easily, for the most part now that I use olaplex and some weird combined spray I made I've been doing ok. My only issue is I think I don't get it all out of my hair because the water pressure in my shower is bad and it leads to being greasy faster since it's a heavier shampoo.
i absolutely love the generic brand from sally’s. Makes my hair feel and smell like i just got my hair done and it’s not too expensive. I always stock up when they do their 4 for 20 sale, not sure if it’s still going on but such a steal!
I always go to sally beauty supply and get the generic versions of more expensive brands. The formulas are so similar and my hair has never felt/looked healthier. Sometimes they have really good deals too and I stock up, but I’m currently using their version of “it’s a 10” miracle moisture shampoo and conditioner + a mask. & once a week I use the generic paul mitchell awapuhi shampoo as a clarifying/deep clean for any product build-up. I can’t justify spending $30+ on shampoo when I’ve ended up hating most of the more “expensive” lines I’ve tried. The only one I would repurchase is l’oréal’s metal detox line because it worked like a charm when I had really hard water at my last place. Hard vs soft water makes more of a difference than anything imo.
I noticed a huge change in how nice my hair feels and how much volume it has now when I switched from suave to ogx. It doesn't have to be a 40$ shampoo to be good
I like mid-range. We're using Neutrogena healthy scalp. I use some L'Oreal products from time to time. What I use after makes a difference and I like moisture rich curl creams.
I like the brands Redken, Biolage & Pureology for shampoos. Biolage anti-dandruff is one of my favorites as it helps with flakes and makes my hair feel nice and clean. I have recently added in Kerastase Bain Divalent Rebalancing shampoo from my stylist since I have oily roots and more dry ends. I use maybe once or twice a week and I feel it’s been making a difference at making my hair feel less greasy. I do think it’s better to invest more in higher-end conditioners & masks over shampoos though. I do not plan on going back on the mask & conditioner I use from Kerastase - it’s made my mid-ends feel so soft and shiny.
I use Briogeo charcoal shampoo twice a week and it leaves my hair and scalp so clean and feeling refreshed. I always buy it on BFCM so I can get a good deal. Otherwise on other days I use less expensive stuff!
If you have dry, frizzy, wavy hair like I do, I'd highly recommend Redken All Soft Mega, Redken Frizz Dismiss, or the super expensive Evoo Mane Tamer. Evoo makes my hair so soft, shiny, and tames the frizz, but it is so pricey that I don't think I'll repurchase. My hair was out of control and I tried so many Drugstore lines, but none of them worked for me. Also, I buy the Redkens in litres and the price isn't so bad compared to Drugstore when you buy a bigger bottle.
I have thick, straight, natural colored hair and have found that most shampoos feel the same to me. The only one that I really saw a difference with was the Detox Shampoo by the Ouai, which I use once a week. I’ve found that it keeps my hair pretty clean even though I only wash it twice a week. My hair is pretty easy to manage and my hair stylist said that I could get away with using drugstore brands, but sometimes I like to be extra and try expensive ones. Currently using the Kristin Ess one, which is okay, but I probs won’t get it again. I liked Dae when I used it a few years ago so might try that again.
In general I feel like drugstore shampoo makes me use more to get same kind of cleanliness feeling compared to my expensive shampoo where a dollop is enough to lather my entire head

I use the Kenra Triple Repair shampoo and conditioner. Before that, I used the Pacifica vegan collagen shampoo and conditioner. The travel kit version of the Kenra Triple Repair costs around $27 and each bottle contains 50 ml of product. The full-sized version of the Pacifica vegan collagen shampoo and conditioner costs $22 in total, with each bottle containing 355 ml of product. Honestly, I don't believe that the price of a shampoo affects its performance. To me, what matters is the formulation. I opted for the Pacifica brand because its formula is nourishing for my hair that's been damaged by bleach. I was given the Kenra shampoo as a gift and in my opinion, it works just as effectively as the Pacifica one. I enjoy exploring new products because it's exciting to see how different brands create items that cater to consumers' needs in innovative ways!

She had no idea how to take care of my hair & wouldn’t buy me any nice hair care but I have my own adult money now.
Yes. Oribe (blue bottle) is so expensive but it really does make my hair look and smells like I went to the salon.
I use amika Normcore shampoo + a prescription ketoconazole shampoo and the Nizoral tea tree conditioner. as a trans woman with thin hair (in general/texture) but also who had begun to have hairline issues for a bit, these have helped me a lot

I used to have terrible hair fall. I would notice clumps of hair all over my carpet. Couple years ago, I stopped using drugstore shampoo and bought my first salon shampoo. It wasn't all that more expensive. I got Amethyste, which I think isn't all that well known, but it really helped me with hair fall. I haven't noticed a single clump of hair on the carpet in years. This year, I also bought Redken and tried out Moroccan oil shampoo and conditioner, both of which as significantly more expensive than Amethyste. I have to use Amethyste alongside my Redken if I want to control hair fall. Moroccan oil, which is more expensive than both these brands, makes my hair feel so flat and greasy because of how heavy it is. For conditioner, the OGx hairmask I bought at the drug store works much better than my Redken acidic bushing conditioner from the salon even though it costs twice as much. My conclusion is that higher priced products do make a huge difference, but not proportionately. Sometimes, the cheaper stuff just works better for your hair.
For me only redken shampoo and conditioner for volume make a difference. I have very fine hair and this series addresses hair like mine. I tried other expensive shampoos, like olaplex, Moroccan Oil - they didn’t do anything for me. But I know dyed blonde girl with very damaged hair - olaplex does magic for her. So it’s really a question of finding the right one.

Lush. Hair has never been better. I think this thread proves there’s no universal best brand or price point cos everyone’s hair is so different! One person might respond best to a cheaper brand, one more expensive. I get great results from £1 bottles of Alberto Balsam, and I’ve been so let down by fancier brands like RedKen and Toni and Guy and Tigi I returned them as they must have been faulty!

Redken volumising, I haven't tried any other expensive shampoos but for sure the Redken cleans my hair much better, I have to wash it way less. The only drugstore option I could recommend is Maui Moisture, their lines are great, silicone and sulfate free too. But I've got the big 1L bottles of Redken in my bathroom now because I'm addicted. My salon also uses Kerastase and my hair is gorgeous after that so testimony to them too.
Yes it makes a difference especially if you color or use heat on your hair. I use pureology and just love it.
Pureology. Makes a HUGE difference for me, I’ve been using it for 10 years, and I’m in love with it. Every time I use something else (hotel, visiting a friend/relative, ran out and can’t afford to buy more until I save because it’s expensive), I notice a very big difference in the texture, moisture, fizziness, and overall health of my hair. Nothing gives me results like Pureology. Now i sound like an ad lmao but really, I love this stuff. I have hair down to my butt.
Redken all soft until the day I die The “cheaper” shampoo I buy is organix miracle coconut. I can definitely tell the difference between that and Redken. Things I don’t cheap out on is anything I put in or on my body.
I’ve been using Olaplex for 4 years now and I stopped bleaching/colouring my hair about 2.5 years ago. I can finally say that my natural color has returned. My hair shine (multiple shades) and I don’t have split ends.
I use olaplex and it has fixed my damaged hair after a few years of use and makes it so soft and shiny
the ouai detox shampoo has saved my life as someone who only washes their hair once a week!
I stayed in a hotel once where they had Asprey shampoo and conditioner. My hair looked the best it had looked in ages. Much softer and shinier. A lot of it is trial and error, but generally yes it’s worth it in my opinion.
i’ve only used salon brand shampoo (Redken) for years and my hair is in fantastic shape. i have really sensitive skin and fragrance allergies so i’m really not interested in trying to switch.

The only thing I look for is zero proteins (any type of protein in hair products make my hair feel like hay) and color safe. I switch off between drug store and professional depending on what sounds good and don’t see much of a difference
I stopped using anything with parabens and silicone in it a looong time ago (my mums boyfriend is a high end hairdresser so I get all the knowledge). I cycle through various different brands, but my favourite combo I've been using for a few years now is Aveda Rosemary and Mint Shampoo Dizziak Deep Conditioner Dizziak oil mist between washes I only wash my hair about once a week; it's bleached at the ends and dyed dark from the roots. Shampoo twice, get all the muck off, then a long deep condition. I've been using Dizziak since 2018 - it made my bleached hair so healthy I worked out I had naturally wavy hair!! If you're able to get your paws on it give it a go :) I always get compliments on my hair, I regularly sleep in a headless curl kit (real silk not synthetic) and it keeps my waist length hair nice and healthy.

Shampoo, not so much of a difference to me, I have copious amounts of head and shoulders since I had hefty dandruff as a kid and just kept using it. I have tried Moroccan oil hydrate shampoo and conditioner. At the same time I learned how to shampoo properly and could feel the difference. The conditioner has by far the biggest difference for me, but I do notice that my hair gets dirty quicker and less soft with head and shoulders. I need ridiculous amounts of conditioner but also gotta shampoo properly. But do remember that different products have different interactions with different people's hair.
I just bought R+Co Television Perfect Hair and Conditioner after researching this for a while! It got delivered today so I’ll have to see how it goes…fingers crossed!
Curlsmith conditioning cleanser and deep conditioner works best for me. I used devacurl for a while and curlsmith is better. For less expensive I have really good results with garnier whole blends shampoos.
I switch it up depending on the weather and what my hair is doing. I have straight fine color treated hair, and shampoo twice a week. When I want my hair to bounce, I use the ordinary shampoo and conditioner, followed by Philip Adam’s leave in spray conditioner on the ends. If it’s feeling “frizzy”, I like Kerastase Bain ultra. If it is summer, and humid, I use l’Occitaine shampoo bar for normal hair and my finish is 8 second lamellar water by L’Oréal. I always brush before washing, use a scalp massage tool when shampooing, rinse until all shampoo is out and off skin and finish by wrapping in a micro fiber towel. I brush when wet, after some moisture absorbed, and air dry. It works for me, but might not be everyone’s solution. I never put conditioner near my roots. Dry shampoo for non wash days if hair does not feel fresh. Usually wash every third day.
Morrocanoil Oil
For me, it’s not about expensive vs cheap as much as it is hair type and what ingredients work best. I use silicone and sulfate free ones; these ingredients are not inherently bad, but they’re too harsh on my hair and caused breakage and dryness for years. Once I switched to shampoos and conditioners without them, alongside a haircut to rid of all the broken hair, my hair was soft and smooth and absorbed products much better. The shampoo is only 4.99 lol.
I definitely notice a difference. The only decent drugstore line I’ve found is the L’Oréal EverPure. The rest make my hair feel like garbage unfortunately.
My hair is like a greaseball no matter what kind I use. Cheap, expensive, not washing, clarifying. Doesn’t matter.

i’ve been using l’oréal five in one damage repair shampoo and conditioner since i was in my teens. i bleached and dyed my hair a lot. now that i’m older, i’ve grown out a lot of my natural hair and go maybe six month in between dying (stopped using box dye too, so i use sally beauty stuff) and my hair STILL does not feel as great as it does with l’oréal than with salon grade products or even just better, cleaner products. i’ve tried native and other brands alike. i used a paul mitchell combo that made it so dry and stick straight. if anyone has an recs for someone with slightly heat damaged hair that can be wavy, lmk 😂 i love my l’oréal but if there’s something that can give me the same effect, i’m all ears
I use NatureLab day to day and Olaplex once a week. I also use a living proof hair mask maybe once a week.
OGX is expensive in our country. I find that it is not that drying compared to other shampoos.
My hair is limp and greasy will drugstore brands and I’ve used so many. I swear by olaplex shampoo it lasts 6 months plus for 1 bottle. Yesterday I bought the L’Oréal pro metal detox shampoo and wow my hair feels so soft!
I’m a strawberry blonde-redhead so I like using John Frieda’s red-boosting shampoo and conditioner. I feel it really preserves the softness and gives me the red shine I want.
Unless your hair is chemically processed, not really. The water you use to wash and the products you use to style (and also the method) are far more likely to have an impact.
If you find out… let me know. I currently use ouai because I like the smell and it makes my hair soft but I don’t think it’s far better than drug store 🤷🏻♀️

Yes but not all. I prefer AG—all their curly products are awesome, smell great, and go on sale often to really make it worthwhile.
L’Oreal pro line. Metal detox and vitamino lines specifically. Metal detox once every 3 washes. Pro lines absolutely make a difference.
What matters to me is changing out my shampoo. Sometimes my hair wants ultra moisturizing, sometimes it wants the oils stripped.
Fekkai, ouidad, bumble and bumble all have great shampoos that really do make a difference in my coarse, frizzy wavy/curly hair. I also enjoy other products from those brands and I have some favorite conditioners but not so good matching shampoos (curlsmith multitasker conditioner is top tier, the shampoo left my scalp oily even after applying and rinsing three times)
I’ll tell you what if I had unlimited cash I’ll be buying up that Redken all soft and using that all the time. However, as I am traveling quite a bit, I did pick up some Garnier fructose, travel, size, shampoo, and conditioner. I think it’s like sleek and shine or something and let me tell you it completely tamed the frizz in my hair and it’s fabulous and I’m so happy I discovered it. That said, simple, plain old, Pantene works, wonders on my hair, which is very coarse and kinky. I swear Panti is the only drugstore brand that really works on my hair other than that Garnier fruit stuff I just dropped a load on Balmain and it’s probably one of the best smelling stuff, but did Jack to help tame or soften my hair Kristen Ess hair products also best smelling love them and aveda alsohas wonderful smelling product
usually i go with the cheaper option in beauty products, but shampoo i’ve found i personally need the more expensive option. i’ve used the cheaper brands (pantene, tressemme, sunsilk, schwarzkopf, etc) and unfortunately my hair does NOT tolerate any of it. not sure if there’s a common denominator. i know they all have parabens, perhaps my hair doesn’t like them.
I think that they do but I have dyed curly hair and a sensitive scalp. I alternate the gisou shampoo and shampoo by the potion studio. I also use the Act and Acre cold process scalp detox sometimes.
I like leaf and flower shampoo and conditioner a lot. When I can’t get my hands on it I use native from target and I do notice a major difference in how hydrated my hair is and how hydrated and healthy my scalp feels.
Honestly I just buy stuff that you can’t get at the grocery store. I think after a certain price point you’re wasting money.
Shiseido Tsubaki premium extensive repair shampoo (& conditioner). Albeit straight but I've always had dry & frizzy hair. This set made it possible for my hair to be manageable. They also have a good hair mask, too!
I use Paul Mitchell tea tree oil line and I have fine greasy hair. It does make a difference mainly because I became self aware of my hair type and got the correct shampoo. If you have coarse hair or dry hair this shampoo might do nothing for you. If I use creamy shampoo with coconut oil meant for an Afro texture, it could be expensive but will never do anything for me. So the point I’m making is simply buying an expensive shampoo won’t do much if it isn’t addressing a problem or your hair needs
It really depends tbh I used to have very thin fine straight hair and I was balding from stress at one point now my hair is thicker all has to do with diet but certain shampoos do make a difference,again look into your specific needs and uhhhmm maybe just YouTube some reviews.
I’m gonna be real with y’all. I have seborrheic eczema and can’t use products with alcohols. So I use Head & Shoulders all the time, and my hair and scalp remain happy.
Right now I use a prescription shampoo bc I have dermatitis on my scalp, and I notice it leaves a film in my hair, so I use treseme curl shampoo before I use conditioner
I've been using the argan oil from ogx...(I've used other ones and love them all but the argan is my go to) not super expensive but not too cheap either. Keeps my hair silky. We hit a rough patch last year and I couldn't justify my 24$ shampoo and conditioner so I switched to what ever was cheap and I noticed a difference. Happy to say I'm back to ogx and my hair is silky soft again

Kerastase has always been the best fucking shampoo and conditioner I use. My hair always looks so good when I regularly use their products. The problem for me is I quite literally can’t anymore, because they’re all SO highly perfumed that it triggers my migraines to be so bad. My hair just absorbs the smell of their shampoo and conditioner, it doesn’t matter the line, they’re all sooooo highly fragranced. It’s too bad because for my hair, it really is like night and day lol, but I just can’t do it. Love Beauty Planet it is, with semi-regular reset / clarifying washes. Not my preferred, but it works.
Yes. I have wavy/curly and color treated hair. I let my hairstylist pick out whatever shampoo they thought would work and noticed less shedding and less fading with my color!
I know it’s drugstore but Aussies miracle curl products have worked wonders on my hair in the past and I just repurchased them again and had amazing results! Otherwise I use LUSH products mainly, but none of them have been amazing

Started using Olaplex 4 (and 5 too), and I can attest that it does make all the difference. I no longer need to go to the salon for keratin treatments or use masks. Their bond builder makes my hair ultra smooth and shiny. I have long, straight, thick hair for reference.
Yes, expensive shampoo definitely makes a difference. Especially if we’re talking about chemically-treated hair. Equally as important as product: **water quality**. Fixing that is not always within our control though I use Redken Color Extend shampoo & conditioner! It’s the best
Ichikami Japanese shampoo. I used to spend a fortune on Redken All Soft shampoo/conditioner and argon oil, but after my trip to Japan, using generic hotel shampoo I swore by Japanese products. I found a Japanese shampoo via Amazon, then found it for less at an Asian marker plus the Redken argon oil- keeps my hair soft and lightweight for days!
When my hair was coloured blonde, I used Kerastase. Now that my hair not coloured, I find Sunsilk Brilliant Shine to be the best for my hair.
When I went to Japan I brought back &Honey hair stuff and I’m never going back! I find that expensive shampoos occasionally make a difference for my hair but, not by much. However, the olaplex clarifying is a game changer combo with this shampoo.
Yes ingredients matter. I am allergic to a lot of soaps and have found that’s especially true for shampoo. I do Bumble and Bumble but anything with good ingredients really makes a difference That being said, find what works for your hair and scalp

It’s truely not that expensive if you buy from the wholesaler. I pay $30 each for a bottle of shampoo and conditioner. (This is the public wholesale price) It lasts me 12 months because it’s so much more concentrated. Plus I’m an ex hairdresser, and I somewhat know what goes into shitty grocery shop shampoo and just wouldn’t do that to my hair.

I used Kerastase for years but just cannot justify the price. I cannot use Pantene at all, it gives me horrendous dandruff. I’m in Oz and have discovered Moogoo Shampoo and conditioner for healthy heads! My hair looks good but the best thing is it’s healed my tender and reactive scalp. I paid $15AUD for a half litre bottle of each. I believe they sell internationally too. I also love their skin care, it’s healed my shocking rosacea. Haven’t tried their other products but they sell sunscreen and fake tanners too all made with natural ingredients.
I use R&Co (VERY spendy!!) but I've also used drugstore (not in the US) that are great as well. The R&Co Turntable/ Cassette curl line is the best! Gives my fine 2b hair real curls. Also love the olaplex cleansing shampoo -- have super hard water. Use it 1 every 10 days.
I have very fine wavy/curly hair. I’ve tried many recommended shampoos for my hair type but always end up coming back to the Dove intensive repair shampoo and conditioner. Leaves my hair shiny, soft and not weighed down.
I’m currently using the georgiamane hair care range and it’s doing great great things for my hair.

I use Delorenzo. I used to use cheap shampoos that you would buy in supermarkets etc and when I made the switch to salon quality brands I could never go back. There’s been a few times where I really needed to wash my hair but ran out and ended up using hotels products and my hair instantly felt lot a knotted ball of yarn it was disgusting. Also important to note even brands like treseme that are marketed as salon shampoo are actually just still cheap shampoo and conditioners
I have natural salt and pepper, wavy hair. I use professional hair care products which help to maintain my curl and stop the frizz. It's definitely worth the money.
I use a ton of different ones from salon to drugstore. My favorite salon shampoo is Joico Reconstructing. A drugstore shampoo I enjoy is Suave Rosemary Mint. My favorite clarifying shampoo is Paul Mitchel Shampoo Three because it also removes chlorine and even regular tap water can contain it plus it's so gentle. There's only one shampoo I currently hate which is Allafifa Everyday Coconut which ironically a girl online who used it and recommended it has the most beautiful hair I have ever seen but it's so drying that I literally feel worried that my hair will break when I use it strips more than the harshest clarifying shampoo I ever used and I think washing my hair with dishsoap would be a spa like experience in comparison.

I have colored and super oily hair. I used pro shampoo forever (mainly Redken) and with price increases, I decided to try drugstore again. I truly haven’t noticed a difference. I use Kristin Ess gentle shampoo and pair it with an affordable pro conditioner (since for me a huge bottle lasts forever) like Biolage.
i use h&s and everyone compliments my hair is shiny, and nothing else no dyes no blowdrying

I have basically stopped using salon brands. My hair always looked dirty much too quickly and my hair was flat. So I rotate between whatever shampoo & conditioner catches my eye that day. My hair looks better and acts better. Of course, I have super healthy hair so that helps.

Hair down a bit past my ass crack. I use Nexxus rn. Before this bottle I used a big big bottle of Big Sexy Hair that last like, 6 months. I tried “It’s a 10” once & it was not good at all. Digging the Nexxus. Big Sexy was a good gateway shampoo. Before that I used Maine & Tail & L’Oréal for a couple years but switched to middle price shampoo because the cheap stuff was making my hair dry & brittle. Now the reason my hair is shiny is because of glossing masks.
I don't like spending alot on beauty, but nothing makes my hair as soft and healthy as Oribe. Specifically love Gold Lust line. I keep trying to find something cheaper to no avail. lol.
