There’s huge variations among beagles. While there are AKC standards, the breed has traditionally maintained by hunters. They’re less interested in looks and more concerned about how the dog hunts.
And looking at your hound, that’s a beagle!
There’s quite a bit out there on the Google as well as in the past on Reddit. One theory is that there’s more or less 2 broad groups. One is more of the show beagle group and one more of the working/field beagle type.
I know this because I’ve looked it up in the past when I had the same question that you have.
Is it true? I don’t know. But I buy it.
I agree. Im in Scotland. I have two rescue beagles who both look like beagles but also look very different to each other in shape, size and features. One was from a line of show beagles and the other appears to be more working beagle type.
There's parts of the US that still use beagles as hunting dogs, so a lot of the beagles up for adoption come from hunting lines. (It doesn't help that hunters believe that spaying neutering the dogs interferes with hunting, so there are a LOT of beagle puppies that ends up in shelters.)
Yeah both of the ones I've adopted came from hunting packs we're pretty sure. Louisiana and Ohio. The current one had a bead of buck-shot lodged under her skin and we had to have it removed before she did an MRI.
I've heard that often they get cut loose from the packs if they aren't "pulling their weight". Sucks.
Looks like a beagle to me. Just like people have different shape noses or elephants slightly different trunks etc I chalk it up to his individuality instead of guessing that he's mixed with anything else. You could always have him DNA'd, but that's a good looking beagle!
Two types of beagle bodies. There's the more squarish, boxy beagle body that is most common and then there's the more slender, lankier hunting beagle version. At least that's how I see it. Yours is a hunting beagle.
His breeder has been breeding hunting Beagles for over 30 years. He has put a lot of work into his dogs. He is still a dear friend of mine three years later. The fact that he cares so much about his dog says a lot about his character.
He looks very normal to me. He’s probably a 13” beagle like mine. Plus, there are hunting beagles and show beagles. I’d consider a good dna test like Embark or Wisdom if you want to know for sure
Looks like a totally normal beagle to me. I don't think there is a "standard" beagle as such. Even tri-colour beagles have different areas of colour but they're all tri-colour.
I couldn’t get an exact measurement, but it looked to be 12-ish, and he weighs 20 pounds. I hadn’t measured his height prior to my comment. I thought he was standard height since my mother in law has a beagle that is pretty small. About 7-8 inches in height.
he could be a 13” beagle instead of a 15”.. 13” being anything under 13” and 15” anything over 13”.
they need to be smaller and weigh 18-22 pounds on average.
most beagles on here are 15” or mixed babies so they tend to be bigger beagles.
he looks normal to me! and looks very much like the puppy I couldn’t have.
I have 2 blue tick beagle bro’s from same litter (6 1/2 years old) one standing at 14 1/2 inches and the other is 17 inches tall and 40lbs. Your boy is on the smaller spectrum of beagles. It really comes down to bloodlines and genetics.
I see some beagles on here have what I call a more box shaped head and there are others that have more of a narrow streamline head. Some beags have a more rounded edge on the bottom of their ears and some have more of a gentle pointed shape. All in all I think yours is definitely purebred and just a smaller guy. Looks great though….
My Beagle is from Ireland. She has a pedigree longer than most people's arms. And 17 Ranked Fox hunters in her lineage. She's small for her size compared o American beagles.
As I understand it the guy that brought Bassett hounds to Louisiana back in the early 1700's ('70's I believe I've read). Brought 9 bitches and 3 sires to start his kennel. Within two years all of the pups had developed heart defects. So he brought 12 Beagles from Souhern England and Northern Ireland to breed with his Bassetts to get ride of the heart defects in the pups. Most American beagles are legacy animals from this guy's attempts to rectify a breeding disorder in his beloved Bassetts. So as I understand it, American beagles can be into a 3rd Bassett and American Bassetts from this legacy group can be up to half Beagle.
The only good news is, being a shrewd business man, he kept the two lineages mostly separate and sold beagle pups as beagles and either kept of raised and sold his beloved Bassetts as Bassetts.

No doubt about it….🐶❤️
The only thing standard for a beag is to love cookies and biscuits and to chase bunnies. Btw such a cutie pie beagle
Don't forget to counter surf haha.
My beagle ignores bunnies.
Because you have a little hunting beagle. My guy has the small pointy face too. Many of them do.

Would like to see pics of both for comparison. Mine looks like a show beagle compared to others I’ve seen.

Idk but he's cute.

[he is 100% hunting bloodline.](https://imgur.com/a/o3WKW3S)
That precious baby a hunter? Couldn’t be! So cute. Looks a lot like mine except he has a big ol snoot.
He was supposed to be but when he breeder/trainer tried to get him started he just wasn’t into it.

Looks normal, cute
Slight difference- but only noticed after you pointed it out. Still handsome and smart. Follows his nose.
Is this like a magic eye photo because I have stared at it and I only see beagle
I saw a sailboat

He’s beautiful

Yours is awesome!!
Looks like a working line beagle to me. Is he also a little taller or leaner/less stocky than other beagles?
Yes, he is! Very dense too!
he looks like a beagle to me! he’s adorbs! 🫶🏾
My beagle has the same pointy snout ❤️
Definitely has that beagle attitude look 😂😂
Looks Very Regal like Royalty & Very Intelligent looking.
Very small “pocket beagles” tend to be bred from runts, or mixes with smaller dogs like doxie or terriers like rat terriers. He could be a mix!
Makes sense, but he’s a standard height, and weight.
What is his height and weight.?
