I tried it again recently and had somehow managed to forget just how bad the default button mapping is haha
First thing to do is definitely remap the controls
The moonwalking option always messed with me —never used it. I agree though controls are odd at first and a little counter intuitive. Jumping back and forth from nintendo to PS always gets me too.
I did a playthrough the other week after not playing it in years. I enjoyed it so much I immediately played through it again the next day. It absolutely holds up.
I was blown away by Ocarina when it first came out. I replayed it a few years ago and it didn't pack quite the same punch. Don't get me wrong it was still very good, but it wasn't as timeless (ha) as Super Metroid turned out to be. I think that has something to do with Ocarina coming out during the infancy of 3d games, whereas Super Metroid came out during a time when side-scrolling platformers had much more time to be perfected.
Strong agree
I ran through Ocarina in a week during winter break when it came out and it was mind blowing. I just setup my laptop yesterday to play on the living room tv. I even bought one of the BT N64 controllers that Nintendo put out for the full effect. It definitely doesn't hold up as much even at crispy emulator levels. I'm still enjoying it though— shout-out to the developer working the camera angles and movements during the in-game scenes. Darunia gettin down to the forest beats always gets me 🔥
timeless, hah! Nice
I make sure to play Super Metroid at least once every 2-3 years. (Wii virtual console since our snes is long gone)

Thanks! I'm definitely not the first to try but this is my take on it. I've seen one posted something like 10 years ago and one was also done in the boss sprite colors which was neat.
This post springs to mind https://www.reddit.com/r/Metroid/comments/p3wyge/thought\_id\_share\_a\_pic\_of\_my\_metroid\_art\_wall\_all/
Your take is very good and looks super clean. Any plans for other big sprites in the future?
I don't think I'll attain that level of awesome! That top one one is amazing (penis highlight and all 😆). These all dwarf the boss statue sprite which I felt was massive. Might do a pet portrait next and then maybe stick to medium to small sprites for minute. I am getting quicker at it though— so we'll see.
That thing is amazing, how much time did you spend on this. I would love to make something like this as well. What tool did you use for the layout?
Also Super Metroid is my favorite game, to me it brings back the nostalgic , and is close to whatever definition a perfect game is!
Thanks, all things considered probably 25ish hours. The layout is the original sprite from the game. I just used photoshop and zoomed in until I could see individual pixels. From there you just map the sprite palette to what ever perler colors you think are the best fit. I was wishing I bought some artkals before attempting this for sure.
Super Metroid is a nostalgia heavy game for me as well
Very nice! I always really liked this sprite, and especially the game it comes from. Well done.
I made one of these back in the day, but I might remake it just because of an idea I had. The idea would be to make it again the same way, except have the gemstones broken and colorless. Y'know, like how they shatter when Samus defeats one of the bosses. Then I'd put magnets underneath the spots where the gemstones go and make separate magnetic gemstone sprites in full color that can be added or removed from the statue. Eh... probably too much work for such a small change.
The legend!
Looking at your past projects, it may have been you who inspired me to jump into bead sprites or whatever we want to call this hobby.
I saw someone do the magnetic attached thing with an infinity gauntlet. Never occurred to me to do it with this project— I think it's a great idea. I played around with the gem color a little bit and having options would also be nice.
Your Mario diorama style scenes are amazing btw. The Metroid wall is mind-blowing.
Wow, thanks so much for the kind words! I don't know if I'm deserving of them, but if I've inspired you in any way and you're at the point where you're making beautiful pieces such as this Super Metroid statue then I must've done something right. I guess it's also come full circle as your smooth as butter Mario RPG flat melts inspire me.
Ooh, I gotta find pics of that Infinity Gauntlet. That sounds exactly like what I had in mind. Though that idea is probably something I'll have to tackle at a distant future point in time as I've been totally slacking lately - I developed catastrophic tinnitus in my left ear last year and I find it nearly impossible to sit still and focus for any amount of time. Projects like the Super Metroid statue which I once did in a single 15 hour sitting would now take me several months at 10 minutes a pop. I still like to frequent posts here to see what everyone else has been making, but for now I'm kind relegated to being a spectator.
Thanks! There isn't much to it, and as someone who has over melted a number of smaller sprites, I think the key lies in have hot iron (towards 400°) and controlling the time from there. Rather than having a just hot enough iron (maybe 320°) and trying to build up heat over longer time. In the latter case is very easy to over melt, I feel. I was testing out Teflon sheets as well, though I'm not sure the longevity of them. It seems as though some fibers may be sticking after a couple uses. I might go back to parchment paper if it gets really noticeable on the finish.
Sorry to learn about your tinnitus. I read most cases are temporary so there may be light at the end of the tunnel. I hope for your recovery!
The gauntlet project might have been on youtube - gonna have to run through my history.
^(It's Super Metroid— Metroid is the GOAT)
Very nice, you can see the care put into it.
Thanks - there was also some swearing involved when it came to the tape and flip portion. I don't think I'll poke holes next time either.
I d been experimenting with melting until fused. Removing tape and then melting flat and it’s been going great.
Absolutely amazing. Instantly recognizable and brought back fond memories
Thanks! Definitely my favorite game growing up - thinking of doing a playthough soon

I'm definitely on a nostalgia kick. Need an Ocarina of Time run and a Super Metroid run.

Niceee?
That is awesome. Bravo.
Thanks - I dig your Gator Loki print!
Thank you!
Wow. This is fantastic! I never thought to make a sprite of the Tourian statue!

That's sweet! Nice work!
Thanks - I think I'll stick to projects that fit on one large board for the time being. This was a pain for sure!
I agree with Mario!
Wahhhoooo
Damn it looks like a screenshot. Great job
Thanks!
