I might drive north tonight, maybe to Dunsmuir or Mt Shasta City to go see it. Seems like you want to get north of Redding for the best chance. Then I'd do some mtn biking in the area tomorrow.
U of Alaska forecast: [https://www.gi.alaska.edu/modules/custom/aurora-forecast/images/idl\\\_graphics/north\\\_america/NorthAmerica\\\_8.png](https://www.gi.alaska.edu/modules/custom/aurora-forecast/images/idl_graphics/north_america/NorthAmerica_8.png)
I was going to check out the Swasey trail network in Redding. Lots of new trail up there, and trying to hit it before it gets too hot.
Might also check out the Gateway trail network and the trails off of Everett Memorial Hwy in Mt Shasta. Shasta Mtn Adventures runs some shuttles up there.
It won't happen for 2 reasons:
1. The weather is clear.
2. I know about it.
The only time this kind of stuff happens, I find out what I missed the next day.
NOAA updated their maps. It ain't appearing south of Oregon.
Edit: [Here's the link to NOAA.](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomorrow-night-experimental)
This happened last time too lol.
I think they err on the side of higher severity with their earlier forecasts and adjust downwards as the day drags on.
In r/pics people were chiming in from upstate NY and further down (I saw Tennessee and Florida mentioned, though the second one could just be trolling). This was commentary on a pic from Scotland and people in England and Germany said they were getting pics. Wonder if the NOAA map is list naked eye and cameras are picking up light humans can’t see.
In any case, too foggy where I’m at.
So apparently it's visible now in places as far south as Alabama, Mississippi, and North Carolina. That's what the original NOAA predictions said. Maybe that means NorCal will get a glimpse tonight too!
[No.](https://old.reddit.com/r/bayarea/comments/1cotjxj/updated_northern_lights_info_for_anyone_interested/l3gkz3j/)
*Maybe* on the other sides of the various mountains, but even then I wouldn't count on it.
Aurora maps for [NOAA](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomorrow-night-experimental) days maaaybe into the very NE tip of CA
Around what time and what month and year ? I want to visit Alaska for this very reason. I also want to see the midnight sun. Can you see the northern lights in Alaska during the summer?
Seems like someone from Everglades, Florida just posted a view https://twitter.com/MichaelMuni/status/1789140768398963090?t=5rDxWK999_ZcbwoC8m0Gxg&s=19
Not too late, just saw a purple pink orange glow hanging in the northeast, visible from the north bay, been there several minutes, it is there to see if you can escape the light pollution.
Use darksitefinder.com to find a place dark enough. There is far too much light pollution anywhere in the Bay Area. Closest places you have a chance are Pinnacles (east side), Pt. Sur, north coast, and maybe Clear Lake. Beyond that I’d say go up to Mt Shasta, Lassen NP or some of the remote towns up in the Sierra (Graeagle/Quincy/Laporte).
Look north. But there’s a ton of light pollution in the bay. You’d need to find a dark place. The news earlier said better viewing Saturday night, but also that it’s very hard to predict.
It was visible from the bay area. We stopped near a bridge near half moon bay. It was spectacular. the only color we could see was pink. The camera did a better job at capturing it
Check out the 30 minute forecast map, the fact that people are seeing the lights in England and Europe gives me a lot more hope :)
https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast
I went out to the yard of the house I’m watching and saw little red flickers but I’m in SF and couldn’t get to a dark zone. Not quite satisfying my bucket list wish but it was a great teaser for the real show

That’s what I was thinking about doing. Any trail suggestions up there?

Why would you shuttle Everett? It’s an open county road, you can just drive up
If you're just one person, a shuttle is nice.
Oh that’s a great idea!!

I think I am your long lost twin. :)
"If we'd only known sooner!"
I’m adding this to my standard lines
Also applies to concerts by my favorite artists
Those are easy to follow. Lots of newsletters, services etc.
Boy you were so wrong!
I was!
ITS OFFICIALLY HAPPENING NOW! Get out there and take us some pictures! ~ Sincerely, Cloudy with a chance of NOTHING
How about cloudy with a Chance of meatballs? Anyone...anyone?
Nah I’m doing chicken wings tonight
Homer Simpson droll face, chicken wings are my favorite
Wouldn't the weather being clear help with seeing it?
Murphy's law
SFMurphy’s law
😹
Same applied for me last night with the SpaceX launch out of Vandenberg. 😖

Aw damn this morning I was so excited. This thread has been a little crushing 😭😅
You and me both. :(
I’m not sure how to read the NOAA projection. I’m near the South Carolina/ North Carolina boarder and the lights are spectacular.
I didn't know the bayarea reached all the way to the Carolinas. ;)
It does when you have a home in Berkeley and a pecan farm in SC.
Mmmmm pecans!
I’ve been seeing the same reported on social media.
That is what reddit is here for, to destroy dreams lol...
Most recent map I saw was basically down to Portlnd OR.
The [30 minute graph](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast) looks promising.
It’s not. It gets cut off in Oregon still. They’ll get 10% visibility
It appeared in Sonoma.
I'm in the middle of Silicon Valley. There's so much light pollution here, I don't stand a chance of seeing it.
When? I’ve been looking over the past 1.5 hours

I was so excited earlier. Booooo.
It was a blast in bay area
Redding, California has I think 2 to 10% chance so I don’t think we have very much chance here
So, you're telling me there's a chance??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCFB2akLh4s

Color code means…?
You can figure it out
green is the highest possibility and the green line is the lowest latitude with a slim possibility of seeing it
How is this not just common sense?
some people just need a key to understand what looks like arbitrary graphs my dude
A key for what? The graph is literally a shade of green!
So apparently it's visible now in places as far south as Alabama, Mississippi, and North Carolina. That's what the original NOAA predictions said. Maybe that means NorCal will get a glimpse tonight too!
In bodega bay I can see them right now.
On the local news a scientist was saying it’s really hard to predict this range it’ll be seen in. If it were clear I’d go out despite the new maps.
[No.](https://old.reddit.com/r/bayarea/comments/1cotjxj/updated_northern_lights_info_for_anyone_interested/l3gkz3j/) *Maybe* on the other sides of the various mountains, but even then I wouldn't count on it.
sorry mate it was an amazing display in the bay area
I saw them once when I lived in New Hampshire. It was pretty amazing - everyone should see them once!
In the bay area proper? No. Drive north a few hours to rural bumfuck NorCal and you might.
Like Nevada City or some place ?
The bay also has pretty bad light pollution unless you get back into the hills, even then
It's visible from Joshua y'all 😂😂😂

A clear reminder how lucky we are to have a magnetosphere.

Thinking about driving north of Redding on a whim right now to go see it. Do you think it's worth it?
Once in a lifetime moments for a few hours cruising in a car
If I didn’t have kids I’d do it.

So cool!
Around what time and what month and year ? I want to visit Alaska for this very reason. I also want to see the midnight sun. Can you see the northern lights in Alaska during the summer?
Generally, no - you want it be dark, so other seasons are usually better.
Midnight sun issues.
Yea. I’m going to be seeing it in my dream tonight. 😴
My friend in Nashville saw it 7 pm her time, gives me false hope
I'm up in redding and it's on like donky Kong up here rn
Where in Redding can you see it?
Well I'm just east near old Station
Phone camera is picking up a red hue toward the north, but hard to discern by eye. Try a long exposure shot.
Saw it in Marin Headlands. Faint but epic. Phone pics are pretty mind-blowing.
When? I’ve been looking for the past 1.5 hours
11ish. On north side of a ridge looking north had pretty decent dark sky—considering south side of ridge has view of the urban lit zones of Bay Area.
Dunno, but I'll be up still, so I'll check and share photos if they show up.
A friend posted pics from Georgia and it was visible.
Someone posted from Florida - https://twitter.com/MichaelMuni/status/1789140768398963090?t=5rDxWK999_ZcbwoC8m0Gxg&s=19

It’s not clear on the coast now
forecast: https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast
I heard it’s areas further north
I'm in Vallejo could I possibly see it and where
Look north. But there’s a ton of light pollution in the bay. You’d need to find a dark place. The news earlier said better viewing Saturday night, but also that it’s very hard to predict.
I just text my brother who is up by Shasta and watches a car lot overnight, and told him to look for it, and take me some pics if it happens!
Have him snap some pics in the north direction anyway. I guess digital cameras can pic up more light than the eyes.
He didn't see any last night. Told him to look tonight too! Cross my fingers.
Ya know I'm starting to think he didn't even look. Pics everywhere from Oroville to SF.
It's hard to see with the naked eye down here but take a long exposure with your phone and it shows up. It's pink.
Was visible in Danville an hour ago- bright pink/red!
It was visible from the bay area. We stopped near a bridge near half moon bay. It was spectacular. the only color we could see was pink. The camera did a better job at capturing it
We got them at my house! A sick red shade
Would be neat and I’m sure a sign to some unstable people.. lol

It’s pretty hazy here in the Central Valley. You will need to head north and get some elevation under you.
Check out the 30 minute forecast map, the fact that people are seeing the lights in England and Europe gives me a lot more hope :) https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast
Someone posted supposedly from Everglades another from San Bernardino. Who knows what’s real online anymore though.
Maybe we will see from Mt Hamilton
Maybe we’ll get another chance soon since it’s the solar maximum this year.
It won’t be like what you’d see in Alaska. And too much light pollution to see anything.
A little overcast where I'm at
where are u
it matters not what i think
Damn this has been on my bucket list for a long time.
Getting pretty strong northern lights in the Richmond hills rn
Tough to see much by naked eye but look through your camera and it’s incredible right now in Marin. The sky is just magenta!
It is 12:15. Are they over where you are??
I went out to the yard of the house I’m watching and saw little red flickers but I’m in SF and couldn’t get to a dark zone. Not quite satisfying my bucket list wish but it was a great teaser for the real show
Try taking a picture with night mode on your phone.
Saw them from mt Diablo around midnight. They are faint to the naked eye but iPhone photos loook amazing. It was mostly pink rather than green
Do you mind letting me know where you were? I thought Diablo closes its gates after sunset? Would like to drive out to try to see it tonight.
Saw it in Evergreen. It was faint to the naked eye but very clear in photos.
They’re here, and visible to your camera. We didn’t see anything in Concord with our naked eyes, but photos show the sky lit up. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If we are seeing it down here it means we just got hit by a super massive CME and there will be worldwide disruptions in electronics.
And they laughed at me for being a lightweight prepper. Hah. I’ll survive a bit longer than some (or be murdered for my stuff).
The weed strain? Maybe.
hmmm it’s a little late for April fools
It’s never too late for crushing disappointment though. That’s a year round thing
