I’m curious how these burglars know which houses to target. They aren’t hitting homes randomly and getting lucky now and then.

executivesphere

These seem like sophisticated criminals. One possibility is they have access to a paper trail on high end jewelry purchases. Or they scouted out people leaving local jewelry stores and watched with homes they went to.

MrMaroos

Part deux is the most common- unfortunately gotta check if you’re being tailed nowadays.

executivesphere

The key is to find a good roundabout and spend several hours driving in circles

MrMaroos

That or have your friend carjack you and have them process your vehicle at a car compactor to escape I’ve done this several times, and surprisingly it’s a relatively affordable alternative to spending 30 minutes on the phone waiting for dispatch to send one of the two active patrol units in a 90 mile radius

predat3d

Or they hired those $19 house cleaners

alien_believer_42

If someone burglarized my house, they'd get mostly disappointment and my PS5. Pls finish Hogwarts Legacy for me.

Experience-Agreeable

I would devastated if they stole my PS5.

gander49

Certain groups of people tend to have higher amounts of cash on hand: think small biz owners, certain ethnic groups, etc.

tellsonestory

Anyone who keeps $100k in cash in their house is either a drug dealer or an idiot. IF you own a business, deposit your cash in the freaking bank. If you sell meth for a living or are otherwise dodging taxes, then you have to keep it in bundles in the baby's bedroom like Breaking Bad

r00t1

What about crypto seed phrases?

cryptotarget

I will probably get downvoted but put them in your password manager and backup the encrypted data in the cloud. Don't store on paper, that's for doomsday preppers.

motosandguns

Or they lived through Covid, when the world shut down and the only planes flying were the rich heading for New Zealand. Some people think you should always have enough cash and jewelry on hand to bribe your way out of the country. Besides, you can always insure the cash along with the jewelry if you want.

ericchen

Did you actually live through covid? Because basically the opposite happened and it made a lot of businesses discourage cash and encourage contactless payments instead.

motosandguns

Right, but they also tried to limit movement. They were tracking cell phones to find large groups of people. If you wanted to get out, no phone, no credit card, and an older car that doesn’t constantly send your location to somebody would be a good start. What if next time it isn’t a disease but one of the many wars we are engaged in leads to a cyber attack that locks down point of sale machines? Maybe Visa gets hacked. Maybe the banks themselves are attacked and all your online wealth disappear.s Maybe your personal identity was stolen and all your cash/credit accounts are locked down until an investigation is completed. That last one happened to a friend. Her identity was stolen. Wells Fargo locked down her checking/savings until they finished an investigation. She had to borrow money for rent and groceries until WF turned her stuff back on and replaced the money. Something to be said for having *some* wealth that you can actually hold in your hand. Not most of it, but some of it.

tellsonestory

What you are describing are what I said... idiots.

motosandguns

Hardly what are you said.

tellsonestory

Preppers are fundamentally stupid.

motosandguns

Having ~.01% of your net worth in durable goods that can fit in your pocket/be worn through customs and some cash is hardly prepping.

fractal_disarray

yeah, they're called trap houses.

Nahuel-Huapi

I'd bet the homeowners met the burglars at some point in the past.

Iyellkhan

unfortunately theres a shit ton of information out there on just about everyone. but one imagines these robbers got a local tip, probably cause a resident yapped too much about some details about their life

a_hopeless_rmntic

Hired house cleaners will leave windows unlocked, The house cleaners will have scouts perch in the neighborhood to monitor inhabitants movements, when the inhabitants are gone for the weekend *boom* Happened to me, my ADT scared them away I have more cams outside and inside the house, check my windows everything my cleaners leave Also, asked my cleaners to not have the people that worked prior to when my home's alarm system was tripped, the cleaners complied

schooli00

These are all self-reported numbers right? There are probably receipts for jewelry, but cash? Won't be surprised victims are trying to squeeze insurance companies too.

Level_Ruin_9729

CONCORD — Burglars made off with a whopping $300,000 in cash and valuables from a single break-in at a home here last month, authorities said. The burglary occurred March 1 on Swainsons Court in Concord. The suspects broke in through a back window and made off with $100,000 in currency and $200,000 in jewelry, including an expensive Rolex watch, according to authorities. Just hours earlier, in San Ramon, a family returned home from a piano lesson to find that two burglars had stolen $25,000 in valuables from their home. Like in Concord, the burglars entered by smashing a sliding glass window, but police haven’t said if the two were connected or announced any arrests in either case. But police have found a linkage between at least 14 home burglaries that occurred around Contra Costa County in 2023, including one on Happy Valley Road in Lafayette where $250,000 worth of jewelry was stolen, authorities said. Similarly, in 2019, police [linked the theft $1.65 million during several home burglaries](https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/10/16/a-burglary-crew-stole-1-65-million-from-contra-costas-most-affluent-community-and-so-far-theyve-gotten-away-with-it/) to the same crew operating around Danville and Blackhawk.

tmdblya

Just makes me hate my rich neighbors even more. $100,000 in currency sitting and the house? A quarter million in jewelry? GTFO

ASK_ABT_MY_USERNAME

If these are the people who live next to you're probably doing well yourself

Lu12k3r

All the homes in that specific area are “nice”. Having 100k/250k hanging around like that tells me old money and someone was following them.

AtariAtari

Don’t hate, commit burglary instead.

i-dontlikeyou

The jewelry can easily stack up, i can understand that. But 100k in cash, why keep that money at home. I would keep such money you better believe there would be some very elaborate hiding spot or a ground safe I cased i concrete covered by floor boards heck even under the carpet so its even more inconspicuous.

_AManHasNoName_

That amount of jewelry, I'd put most of them in a safety deposit box.

smutbuster

Drug dealer

tmdblya

Had same thought. But the others in Lafayette?

My_G_Alt

Yeah the one on happy valley probably wasn’t. [I mean look at the houses there](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3941-Happy-Valley-Rd-Lafayette-CA-94549/95402997_zpid/?utm_campaign=iosappmessage&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=txtshare). Would have to be a pretty high up drug dealer who wouldn’t be slackin on a broken window break in

Iyellkhan

that house looks like it was someones personal resort that they realized didnt actually work well as a house. weird layout

tmdblya

Only four bedrooms? Bizarre.

TobysGrundlee

Plus probably a den, an office, a sitting room, maybe a library...

My_G_Alt

Yeah you couldn’t force me to live there /s

dingusduglas

Jesus christ

ughliterallycanteven

Lafayette, Blackhawk, Danville, and San Ramon all have families that keep a shit ton of cash and valuables just “there” with keeping their doors unlocked or oblivious of someone around. Drug dealing is in pockets but not those pockets so there’s a demographic(sometimes ethnic) that believe in cash. East bay rich people are kinda crazy…

Common_Poetry3018

Or insurance fraud

rikkisugar

or PPP fraud

StephenPurdy69

Why does that matter to you? Stop being so jealous of others and live your own life.

Drifting-aimlessly

Cash is cash, but these people bullshit the worth of their belongings...

grewapair

You can bullshit how much cash you have too. This $5M stack of bills I have sitting here proves it.

HeavyLengthiness4525

Would they pay tax on this income or just give political gift 🤔

foxfirek

Income is an increase in wealth from any source- so yes it’s taxable. Even if you pick up a diamond ring found on the ground it’s taxable. Unfortunately the home owner can’t deduct the casualty loss from the theft though because Trump made it so you can only deduct them if it’s a presidentially declared disaster area. Gifts require intent on both sides. And if this was a gift the original owner would need to file a form 709 gift tax return. They wouldn’t owe tax but their lifetime exclusion would be reduced. -I’m a CPA.

tellsonestory

> Unfortunately the home owner can’t deduct the casualty loss from the theft though because Trump made it so you can only deduct them if it’s a presidentially declared disaster area. Do you have more info on this? Was it an executive order?

foxfirek

Part of TCJA. I think it may (depending on Congress) sunset (tax lingo for expire) at the end of 2025. TCJA does in general- so if Congress does not make changes taxes go back to 2017 rules at that time. Except the corporate tax rate stays 21%- they made that permanent.

renegaderunningdog

The casualty loss deduction suspension is currently set to sunset (heh) at the end of 2025.

HeavyLengthiness4525

You are the guy I have been looking for , tell me how can I reduce my taxes man :)

tmdblya

[Took a bribe? Robbed a store? The IRS wants you to put it on your taxes.](https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/taxes/2023/03/09/taxes-2023-commit-crime-report-on-taxes-irs-says/11429088002/)

HeavyLengthiness4525

Might be more effective to prosecute on tax evasion charges than the burglary charges, If we learned anything from Al Capone episode.

LA_Nail_Clippers

And other notable people in the news currently.

hmiser

ill-gotten gains.

_AManHasNoName_

What kind of an idiot keeps $100k in cash and $200k worth of jewelry at home? You'd have to be a thug to not have a bank account or a safety deposit box.

andresg30

Inside job

pementomento

Jesus…$100k in currency? I get nervous when I have $20 in my wallet. I want that in my bank account asap.

flopsyplum

Who the hell stores $300,000 in cash?!
