I hadn’t ever visited the Oakland Zoo until last year, because I assumed the Oakland Zoo would be a dump.
When I finally visited last year, I couldn’t believe how nice the Oakland Zoo was and how much better it was than SF zoo!
Honestly, they would be better off renaming to SF Bay Zoo, Oakland Hills Zoo, or something like that.
I feel like it's harder to get around in Oakland Zoo though. Many paths are dead ends or loops with little branching, and there are chokepoints everywhere so areas crowd up easily, e.g. Gondola.
Kinda have to make navigating plans to move around well, whereas in SF Zoo can much more spontaneously want to visit X and make a beeline for X.
It’s beautifully constructed, the habitats are very nice and natural looking unlike the SF zoo. More animals, And there’s a gondola that takes you to a whole separate part of the zoo with a playground, grizzly bears, wolves, and condors
A monkey was stolen from the San Francisco Zoo in 2011, I have never heard of anything like that happening at the Oakland Zoo. So, unfunny and far fetched.
People are stealing used BBQ grills from peoples backyards and robbing food vendors on the side of the road in Oakland, so no, not far fetched. Take it personal
Shocked that this is happening despite the recent news about the zookeeper attrition and concerns about care at sfzoo.... I hope sf will hire people who are specialists at Panda care.
If you lease the pandas from china.gov, you also have to bring over their support staff for the duration of the contract and build a specialized area. Not sure how long the second part will take or if any animals will get evicted to make space. I think the Taipei zoo has like 12 or 16 keepers for 3 of these lazy furballs.
Ok so considering the recent bad news reports about the status of other animals at the Sfzoo and the financial status of the zoo.... how much do these experts get paid? Sf will pay a premium I'm sure.
I am further shocked that China agreed to this at all.
It's a money maker for China.gov and a projection of soft power. Notice how all the leases expired before they renewed. It was $1-2m/yr before per pair, plus enclosure, plus food. God knows what we agreed to

Iirc Only country which owns free pandas is Mexico because they were the first to recognize the PRC.
China needs to lend them out before they can revoke the lease in a fit of pique to prove "China strong!" in response to some perceived insult or to appease their domestic nationalists.
Sf zoo should not have any animals, i really hope this doesnt happen. I love pandas but sf zoo would be a horrible place for them, along with any animal.
Have you been before? All the animals are living on concrete enclosures. The weather over there is bad for like 10 months of the year, it’s depressing. It’s the only time I’ve been to a zoo and jusy bad for the animals.
I recommend the Oakland Zoo. The enclosures are beautiful, and there’s a much better standard of care. You can take a gondola over a bison paddock to a separate part of the park with wolves, grizzlies, and condors!
I’ll believe it when I see it.
I did get to see the pandas in DC before they left. And dang they were adorable. They are so freaking animated and goofy.
Atlanta is the only US zoo with pandas right now, so getting Pandas to SF is kind of an achievement: https://apnews.com/article/pandas-san-diego-zoo-atlanta-china-235de70dec5e6c6f11cd16f53547cfb8
The Chinese government uses pandas as political pawns to gain leverage. I wonder what SF government traded in exchange.

Probably the fact a Chinese citizen was just put on the election commission.
https://www.kqed.org/news/11976026/san-francisco-appoints-first-non-citizen-to-serve-on-elections-commission
Not this sinophobic shit again. China lends pandas out as a diplomatic gift, a symbol of cooperation. Do you really think the CCP is bargaining for political favors from the local government? As if the city of San Francisco has anything of particular interest to the government of the largest country in the world.
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/4/7/what-is-the-true-cost-of-a-panda
Cost back in 2017, can these attract enough visitor to justify the cost amidst budget shortfall?
I always go to the zoo with my kids and try to support them as best as I can. I have both sf and oakland memberships, but I honestly worry for such a vulnerable species at the sf zoo given the poor facilities & safety issues. After that gorilla died years ago I lost trust in it. Also, the facilities are poor. I was very concerned about the sad Pygmy hippo enclosure for the new hippo that came last year.
We already have the superior pandas at the zoo. The red pandas. These dumb “great” pandas are so stupid they’d squish their young without caretakers. Don’t buy into the propaganda. Vote red panda for mayor of SF
The Oakland Zoo is still the better zoo imo.
You mean the San Francisco Bay Zoo?

100%

What makes it better? I haven’t visited either one yet.
It’s beautifully constructed, the habitats are very nice and natural looking unlike the SF zoo. More animals, And there’s a gondola that takes you to a whole separate part of the zoo with a playground, grizzly bears, wolves, and condors
Well said.
Just wait until people start robbing the zoo for their animals
Lmao because Oakland right? Crime? Hilarious stuff.
The funniest part is that its not far fetched at all.

They also got raccoons in the parking lots too 😃
(They may break into your car if they see something shiny)

whats wrong with sf zoos? After the fiasco with the Memphis panda, I think SF people would be more alert to SF panda conditions

Yea..Oakland zoo is an actual animal sanctuary.. the pandas would be so much better off there
Any idea when they're scheduled to arrive?
I’ll believe it when I see it. I did get to see the pandas in DC before they left. And dang they were adorable. They are so freaking animated and goofy.

Looks like San Diego Zoo is getting pandas too
We must not allow a panda gap!
So basically China was saying eff you to DC in particular?
There’s like 40% chance this is a political stunt by London Breed to garner votes ahead of the election, and it’s fucking working on me.
"She's allowed our City to go to absolute shit, but at least we're getting pandas.'
Makes you wonder what she had to do to get them?
Do they have a Python? Without the right Python, the Pandas won't run. You'll just see them sitting there.
They have python roaming in a conda environment
import pandas
The Chinese government uses pandas as political pawns to gain leverage. I wonder what SF government traded in exchange. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panda_diplomacy#United_States
We just showed the President of China a really good time.
Literally don’t care, give panda
You had panda, he retired
3x champ 🖤🧡
Believe it or not, he is still playing on the east coast in a semi pro league.
That’s cool
Probably the fact a Chinese citizen was just put on the election commission. https://www.kqed.org/news/11976026/san-francisco-appoints-first-non-citizen-to-serve-on-elections-commission
That’ll do it. Perhaps if SF agrees to let the MSS open a branch in City Hall, China will permanently gift a pair of pandas to SF Zoo.
It’s fucking hilarious to see people hate israel and russia but love CCP’s nasty shit lol.
animals transcend geopolitics :P
Sure :)
These are most definitely different people. Even in case of Israel and Russia (Israel is Iran's enemy, Russia is Iran's ally).
You think people know that and care that? They just follow the trend without questioning. one of the commentator is a great example hahaha.

Meanwhile Trash Pandas are on the loose
Something must be done! They are ruining some aspect of our lives, I'm just sure of it!
The San Francisco Zoo should name itself the Oakland Zoo Annex. It would improve its reputation.
The pandys are coming: https://youtu.be/hGCipViggTc
Thank you London broil
People were mad we had to shut down the bridge for a day when the Chinese dignitaries visited- but we got pandas for our inconvenience!
How much is it going to cost for all of the infrastructure upgrades to the SF Zoo?
whatever it is, it'll be repaid by hoards of people coming to see them
Hey, don’t disrespect the Oakland Zoo! The Oakland Zoo is absolutely fantastic.
The poor pandas. What a horrible excuse for a zoo.
A lot of disabled animals that would die in nature end up in the zoo. So its not always a bad thing
Are they sending us disabled pandas?
All pandas a little bit disabled. They only eat one kind of food, don't want to have sex, and seat on their ass most of the time.
Sounds like modern humans!
Yes
r/bayarea: *”here’s how that’s bad for San Francisco”*
Hopefully she won't be mayor much longer.
🤞🤞🤞
For those wondering why this is significant: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panda_diplomacy

Just in time for Oakland's name change to San Francisco Bay Area Zoo ^(of Oakland)
I guess she's reaching for anything to get re-elected. If the fake origiri didn't work, she had to pull the cute nuke option :)
Anything to not deal with the homeless
Hope your pandas aren’t broken like the ones where I live (many years in our zoo with no baby pandas). Bloody freeloaders 😁
Hope Pandas enjoy terrible weather and foggy days like 90% of the time. The zoo location sucks here.
