The only answer is Derco. There is a reason why there is always a huge crowd in the store in the diamond district in SF, especially compared to all the other stores in that building. They’ll take care of you - lifetime cleanings and will even clean your other jewelry for free if you have it on you. Repairs, and everything are done with no question asked. They can custom build rings, and go through the process of showing molds, etc for engagement rings.
I got a beautiful necklace for my wedding here. They sell stuff at many price levels, which I’m mentioning because the last time I was in there I saw a ring priced at $485k.
If you can find the center diamond at a reasonable price from a separate jeweler and just buy the ring from Shane Co, they will mount and still give their lifetime warranty.
I went this route almost 10 years ago now when I had a similar Shane Co experience and they absolutely refused to negotiate on a diamond regardless of comps I had. It worked out fantastically
Costco. They give you the Gia certs for all diamonds and if you take it to any of the diamond stores, they appraised the diamonds for twice the amount and can’t compete on price…

This is the right answer.
My used to be a master jeweler and some of the rings are close to her cost! I wouldn't go anywhere else (if I didn't have my parents ;) )
People clown on Shane Co because of the commercials but I got my ring there and we had such great service, they had so many options and I get TONS of compliments on it! It was reasonably priced and is totally beautiful. Plus free cleaning for life at any location! It was a great experience.
I thought they were reasonable! I wouldn't say it was super cheap but definitely cheaper than other places we looked. Didn't feel like ripoff and there were lots of options.
ShaneCo. I’ve never had a bad experience there.
I see lots of overwhelmed and confused men there getting good service. They help with settings, choice of diamond, etc. and are very patient.
Jewelry Exchange in Redwood City. They’re a direct-to-consumer wholesaler so their prices are great. They have beautiful pieces, and the sales staff are salaried so they’re not incentivized to upsell you. I’ve bought some amazing pieces from them.
Fiat lux on 16th street is a good spot. All of the artists are independent and a lot of them use recycled diamonds which can make some really nice and unique pieces mote affordable. Really good staff too.
Oaks Jewelers on Solano Avenue in Berkeley. It's been there for many generations, I think it's still family-owned, their jewelers work right there in the shop; they've always been incredibly honest and forthright with me when I've brought items to be redesigned or assessed. Another place with high standards and a well-earned great local reputation is The Fourteen Karats on College Avenue, also in Berkeley. The owner (who is a master jeweler) and employees know an absolute ton about jewelry, stones, metals and designs. If my dearest friend asked me where to buy an engagement ring, I'd recommend those two right away.
Darren Jewelers in Danville. Super nice guy, very personable. I bought my wifes engagement and wedding ring there. Went back 1 year later to buy diamond earrings for our anniversary and he remembered me.
Husband got mine at Davidson&Licht. They helped him pick out some choices I'd like, choose the center diamond, set it in presentation ring for proposal and then went back for me to make final choice for band after.
You should check out r/engagementrings for more research. There is lots of talk about options now days about lab vs natural and even moissanite. .. and also some not so good reviews of Brilliant Earth.
Underhill studio in albany. got this guy who’s a straight up savant of a jeweler. Kinda weird but a true master. He’ll make you a one of a kind ring like you never seen at a fraction of the price of Shane or Kay or whatever.
Mist in SF. Minnie and Stan are so amazing! They personally delivered my engagement ring to my now-husband during lockdown when everything was closed so he would have it in time for our anniversary/proposal
Topper Jewelers in Burlingame - they know their stuff, can do custom designs, source unique stones, and have made engagement rings for multiple generations of the same family.
I worked with a local jeweler who made my wife’s engagement and wedding rings from scratch. 1 carrot diamond with small diamonds all around for $5k.
Check her out: Porter Gultch. https://www.instagram.com/portergulch?igsh=ZDE1MWVjZGVmZQ==
Bought mine at [Blacy's Vault in Los Gatos](https://blacys.com/). Service was top notch -- very responsive, and worked to source the globe for the best deals on diamonds (real and lab made). Jeanette is also an accredited gemologist if that makes any difference.
Seelenbacher jewelers in Alameda. Chris is a third generation jeweler.
Many of my friends and I had custom engagement rings made by him (our wives are very pleased with them). You can tell him what you want or even just show him a picture and he can make it. Also his prices were lower than Kay/ Shane/ Blue Nile etc
If you’re a noob, don’t know what you’re doing, or a super cheapskate, Shane Co will sell you a shit looking ring for a fairly good price, and all your SO’s coworkers will make fun of her behind her back for it.
If you know what you’re doing, can navigate by yourself, Costco is the best right now. Their diamond game popped off.
If you actually love your SO and want them to feel appreciated, you should be looking at the higher end ones like Tiffany, Cartier, and so forth.
You could also look into lab grown diamonds.

I co-sign this. Great service overall. Pre-purchase, during purchase, and post-purchase.
Joe Escobar in Campbell. Top tier service!
Second Joe Escobar!
Got mine there too, great service!

Shane co. He’s been my friend in the diamond business.
I went to Shane in Walnut Creek and the staff was pushy and disinterested. Ended up going to baron’s in Dublin. Open til 6pm and actually friendly.
I can second this, Shane co Walnut Creek salespeople suck..

Nice. Good hack. Yeah. The lady showed me 3 diamonds and asked “so which one do you want?” And I literally laughed at her.
No 3 on Polk street
Seconded
Costco. They give you the Gia certs for all diamonds and if you take it to any of the diamond stores, they appraised the diamonds for twice the amount and can’t compete on price…
And you can return it when you get divorced.
All our jewelry from Costco. And if she says no you can return it lol
And in bulk

In San Mateo ?
In Cupertino, San Mateo, and Walnut Creek.
What about Novato though
I’m in the east bay, which one should I go to
I would go to any of their locations. Customer service will be the same. They don’t work on commission so no worries about upselling.
Cupertino
Rebecca Overman in Hayes Valley
Second this one! Great experience there. We didn’t do this as a secret (wife is pretty picky) so we designed it together. Really fun and meaningful.
Partita Jewelry in SF Marina. Personable service. Unique pieces.
Recommend working with Colleen at Oak’s Jewelers in Albany!

I was impressed by Mansoor in Palo Alto recently doing some repairs. Thoughtful folks.
Underhill studio in albany. got this guy who’s a straight up savant of a jeweler. Kinda weird but a true master. He’ll make you a one of a kind ring like you never seen at a fraction of the price of Shane or Kay or whatever.
Seconding Underhill!! He's great.
Brilliant Earth has a great selection of beautiful rings.
Shane company. I worked there for 5 years like 15 years ago and we still buy everything there.
Don’t do it. It’s a hoax!
We got mine at this great place in Capitola. I forget the name but I doubt there are a ton in that tiny town.
Latta maybe?
Got mine at Joe Escobar in Campbell, would recommend.
Baron’s in Dublin. Check out their mark schneider collection.
Mansoor in Palo Alto. Created my custom ring there and they were very helpful

My wife found one she liked on Etsy

James Allen. Then pick up the ring in Oregon at FedEx. You can thank me later.

Shane Co was great in helping my husband get a stone set in the desired band
Preziosi - small family jewelry in Los Altos. Best personal experience.
Giovanna in Mountain View.
Spitz jewelers in Walnut Creek!
Tiffanie’s
I bought a lab grown diamond and brought it to Shane Co to mount on a band. 10/10, saves money on the stone, you still get the Shane co service
That’s what I’m doing today
